Opis:
Paper described geomorphological characteristics of landform sets which occur on research areas investigated by Polish geomorphologists on Spitsbergen. These area involve four areas along the western coast of Spitsbergen, i.e. vicinities of the Kaffiøyra, the Werenskioldbreen, the Calypsostranda, and the Hornsund, as wel as one area located in the central part of Spitsbergen, i.e. vicinity of Billefjord with special emphasis on surroundings of the Petuniabkukta. Landforms are characterized in different morphogenetic terms, mainly glacial, peryglacial, deundational, slope, fluvial, even eolian factors and processes.

Opis:
A brief review of the evolution of denudation research since the 1960s is followed by a review of specific sediment yield variability in mountainous regions of the world as a function of spatial scale, relief, glaciation, lithology and disturbance type and location within the basin. A general model of scalar relations of suspended sediment yield for Canadian regions warns against comparing data from basins with areas ranging over several orders of magnitude. A regional summary of specific sediment yield in mountainous British Columbia confirms that in basins <1 km2 and >30,000 km2 specific sediment yield decreases with basin size whereas in basins of intermediate size (between 1 km˛ and 30,000 km˛) specific sediment yield increases with basin size. This effect is interpreted in terms of three distinct process zones in every mountain basin. These zones can be characterized as a) generally degrading hillslope zones, b) generally aggrading footslopes and valley sides, and c) channelized flows on valley floors demonstrating either net aggradation or degradation. These are identifiable repeating elements in such landscapes. Suspended sediment yield data from mountainous regions around the world are considered in light of the British Columbia model. Some support for the model is found where basins are stratified according to scale, relief, lithology, disturbance types, and location within each basin. Disturbance types include the presence of glaciers, land use activities of various kinds, such as increasing population pressure in the intertropical montane zone, changing population distribution and associated economic activities in the temperate montane zone, and potentially hydroclimate change.

Opis:
The relatively undeforrned South-West escarpment zone (SWEZ) of Roztocze, SE Poland, is marginal to the East European Platform, which is covered by a thick succession of Palaeozoic and Mesozoic rocks. Cainozoic sediments, previously much more widely distributed and largely destroyed by erosion, still fill some valleys and also crop out in the hills of the inner and outer escarpments. The escarpment zone comprises several morphological elements: an outer hill zone, inner inselbergs and a median depression zone of tectonic origin. Transverse to the escarpment, these elements are compartmentalised by transverse valleys, many of which are fault-controlled. Morphometric and geomorphological studies show that the SWEZ of Roztocze was repeatedly tectonically activated. Neotectonic redevelopment has resulted from controls in the underlying basement. Hence there are many young faults, a large number of open fault-fissures and a complex system of joints, all of which have influenced landform development in this area to a considerable degree. The main scarps have been developed along the longitudinal fault zones and, along the transverse fault zones, breach valleys. Joint systems have controlled the development of secondary relief forms. The close association of relief and various elements of the geological structure in the SWEZ of Roztocze mean that cartographic methods can reliably be employed in studies of the landforms in this area.

Opis:
The Tunka rift consists of a system of baikal type basins and low-mountain intcrbasin ridges separating them. In the north it is surrounded by the alpine Tunka ridge and the low Olkha upland, and in the soulh by the Siberian mountains Western Khamar-Daban with volcanic plateau. This rift may be as a morphotypc of dry rift basin of the Baikal type (rift valley) because it has a full set of their typical structural elements and their unified forms. Relief of the rift and its mountain surroundings are composed of five belts: the belt of plains and the belt of tilted piedrnonts, the apical belt, the belt of slopes, and the belt of valley boltoms in its mountain frame. Instead of them there is a large group of interzonal land forms.

Opis:
Structural relief is exceptionally recognisable in areas where igneous and metamorphic rocks without a Quaternary cover occur, which is the case with the Kola Peninsula. However, the subject of structural relief has been addressed relatively rarely. Therefore, an attempt was made to estimate the influence of tectonic and lithologic factors on the relief within two test areas, each covering approximately 100 km2, located on the coast of the Barents Sea (Murmansk Terrane) and the White Sea (Lapland Granulite Belt). The structural relief here is varied, which results from differences in the geological structure. In the former area, depressions and tectonic blocks of varying size and order predominate, while east of Kandalaksha these are flattened hills with asymmetrically inclined slopes (having the character of cuestas). Although lithologically diverse, the test areas share a common feature: the presence of numerous faults and dislocation zones that in the case of the Barents Sea caused the division of igneous rocks into several blocks of various orders. Most of the relief forms in this area were found to have structural origins, namely valley depressions of various orders, slopes and escarpments, lake basins and seaside cliffs. The structural relief of the Murmansk Terrane is determined by disjunctive structures. In the case of the Lapland Granulite Belt, the relief of the analysed macroblock is closely linked with the formation and position of the rocks – this is escarpment relief.

The Baikal rift zone is defined on its NE side by the Olyekma-Amur system of NW/SE-striking transverse lineaments. Transverse faults also separate the north-eastern part of the rift zone into the Chara and Tokko sections. The former shows a typical range of neotectonic forms which include (from NW to SE): the inclined horsts of the Kodar ridge; an axial system of grabens and interbasin faults and a marginal dome. The Tokko section is located within a sector of the Olyekma-Amur system of lineaments. Here, the neotectonic forms are smaller and a degradation of the NW flank of the rift zone has taken place. A large marginal step defines the south-eastern flank. It is considered that these structural modifications relate to changes in the anomalous mantle protrusion near the north-eastern boundary of the rift zone.

Opis:
The definition of glaciotectonics to include both the effects of glaciodynamic processes and the effects of glacioisostatic processes has been generally accepted. In Poland, the glaciotectonic style of the Wartian zone is one of the most distinctive features of the Saalian area; glaciotectonic symptoms are numerous in the western part, but disappear in the east. Such a division extends beyond the Polish borders - as continuous thrust ridges in the west and as a sporadic phenomenon in the east. Attention is drawn to the relationships between geological structure and morphological features; they include such cases as : a direct reflection of thrusts in convex land forms, low-relief areas and relief inversion (in relation to the structure). Much importance has been attached to the marginal zone of the Łódź Plateau in Middle Poland. This paper reviews the main genetic hypotheses which, usually, are based on the mechanism, rather than palaeogeographical conditions. Despite much discussion, several problems remain, e.g.: -   why, allowing that the mechanism was similar, are there such regional differences; -   why are the marginal zone of the Warta Stadial and the western part of Europe so well endowed in this respect; -   could palaeoclimatic conditions (different patterns of glaciation and déglaciation), and could postglacial vertical compensatory movements have conditioned the regional variation?

Opis:
In the central part of the Rawka lobe of the Warta stage ice sheet of the Middle Polish glaciation (Saalian), areal déglaciation took place in the vicinity of Łódź. This is indicated by the numerous kames here, among which ridge forms are conspicuous. Some of the ridges which are situated on the slopes of river valleys and on the slopes terrain depression possess unusual shapes which resemble „tongues" and „paws". These forms merge gently with the adjacent elevated upland, whereas their distal parts are sharply defined and may lie as much as several decametres above their bases. „Kame tongues" and „karne paws" are built from paraglaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial deposits which accumulated in water bodies between dead ice blocks during the final phases of the ice sheet downwasting. The distinctive shapes of the landforms result from the varying thickness of the dead ice masses: thinner on the elevations and significantly thicker in terrain depressions (mainly in large, subglacial pre-Wartian valleys). These characteristic kame ridges demonstrate that the more elevated parts of the subglacial surface had been ice free for a long time before the dead ice blocks eventually disappeared from the terrain depressions.

Opis:
Wykorzystując wyselekcjonowane prace oraz szereg materiałów niepublikowanych. Autor dokonał przeglądu metod stosowanych w Polsce do oceny rozmiarów przekształceń rzeźby terenu wskutek bezpośredniego oddzia- ływania człowieka.
On the basis of the selected papers and a number of unpublished materials, the author reviews the methods used in assessing the degree of direct human influence on relief transformation. The comparative analysis of the above procedures as well as their results enabled the following conclusions to be drawn: 1. the research subject of limited spatial extension is often ambiguously specified, 2. the research is conducted on the areas which are not fully representative for morphogenetic zones of Poland or for lower-ranking units, 3. only the selected types of anthropogenic forms are included into the studies, 4. the course and consequences of human morphogenetic activity is analysed in connection with selected research periods and using different procedures. The author concludes that the studies on both direct and indirect human morphogenetic activities are necessary to fully understand the evolution of contemporary relief of Poland. Moreover, defining regularities in terms of the development and disappearance of anthropogenic relief forms can be very useful for forecasting the level and spatial variation of anthropogenic relief transformation in Poland.

Opis:
The paper discusses the issues associated with the geoecological rendition of high mountains, taking as a basis the authors’ studies of interrelations between relief and vegetation. The fundamental prerequisites for these studies are presented, with emphasis on the fact that the relation between the two elements is indirect and takes place via the intermediary of the habitat. With respect to the scales, both spatial and temporal, applied in the study of landscape, it is established that the majority of relations between vegetation and relief is analysed on the micro-scale, and much less frequently on the meso-scale. Application of areal methods in respective studies provides the possibility of determining the measure of relation between the elements considered. The linear methods (like, e.g., the catena method) allow for grasping the gradient differentiation of the spatial patterns on high mountain slopes. It was established that the main source of problems with landscape representation of high mountains is the mosaic character of the landscape structure. Due to this, even though the interrelations between the elements of the environment – including relief and vegetation – are distinctly visible, they have not been made precise enough with the mathematically defined dependencies, which make development of models of structure and functioning of high mountain slopes more difficult.

Opis:
The digital relief intensity map of Pomerania based on the digital geomorphology model is a useful tool for the selection of specific work areas. Thanks to the relief intensity coefficient, the image pattern recognition of forms of any sizes of the basic area was possible and independent from the absolute height. This allows comparing the forms, and especially studying their spatial relationships with other morphological units within the marginal zone. The map database is a system both complex, consisting of numerous components adopted from published sources (mainly maps) such as geology, geomorphology or topography, but also open. This means the possibility of its expansion, and the carried out analyses using geostatistical methods are sources of quantitatively new sets of data. As an example may stand the method for determining the area of outwash plain surfaces in Pomerania influenced by extreme glacial water discharges in the late Pleistocene, and the attempt to estimate the scale of this phenomenon. This map, by providing the opportunity to observe the area of morphometric features in both regional and local scales, whether in Pomerania or in contemporary glaciated areas, constitutes an important element in understanding the regularities governing such processes in the past.

Opis:
High mountain areas are characterized by substantial geodiversity and different morphogenetic processes play a key role in shaping their relief. One of the most transformed landforms within the high mountain areas affected by such processes today are footpaths and tourist trails. For this reason, this issue needs to be closely examined for a variety of mountains ranges. The main aim of the research was to characterize effects of changes in relief experienced by footpaths and their vicinity in three different high-mountain regions: the Rila Mts., the Pirin Mts, and the Western Tatra Mts. Geomorphological mapping was used to study the erosive relief in details. The comparative analysis of geomorphological effects of relief transformation along surveyed footpaths allow for the determination of regularities in landform formation. In the Tatra Mountains, the footpaths experiencing the highest degree of physical transformation are those running along the slope gradient and across eroded rock debris zones, with little or no turf. Such paths create favourable conditions for erosion to produce deep incisions, the depth of which can reach one metre. In the case of the Rila and Pirin Mountains, the deepest incisions reach 1.8 m. Research has shown that among the different forms of human impact the great amount of pressure on relief in high mountain areas is exerted by pastoral activity and forest management practices.
