    Contemporary Russian drama is situated in a dialogue with literary and more precisely dramatic tradition. For example, this thesis clearly confirms a comedy by Igor Shpric On the bottom. The text at the level of its title refers to Maxim Gorky's play  The Lower Depths.  Shpric’s comedy parodies this work by presentingGorky's characters in the social and cultural context of contemporary reality. The main purpose of the paper is the intertextual analysis and interpretation of ironic Shpric’s comedy as the transcontextualization of language, poetics, themes, plot and characters ofGorky's text.

    The deconstruction of the literary tradition is one of the most frequently used postmodern motifs. It is the main point of many works of Russian postmodernists. Due to the exceptional achievements of Russian writers and the considerable influence on forming social consciousness their activity is subject to critical analysis in many works of all waves of Russian postmodernism. In this context Vladimir Sorokin's texts make their mark – for many of them the deconstruction of literary tradition and hermeneutics is a defining category.

    The present article aims at analyzing one of the modern drama's strategies  — playing with a classical text. Boris Akunin's Hamlet. Version, which is at the core of my interests, is comparable to such famed Hamlet’s alterations as Tom Stoppard's Rosenkrantz and Guilderstern Are Dead. The uniqueness of Akunin's work lays in building the individual strategy, while taking into the mass recipient consideration. The forecast is not comforting — consumers are getting less and less sensitive and adequately formed to perceive  art. But one cannot say that Akunin is descending to his readers narrow horizons. He is  a mediator between highbrow and lowbrow, always beyond, never belonging to any category.

    The prose of Victor Pelevin, one of the best-known contemporary Russian writers, is usually associated with postmodernism. Some interpreters believe, however, that the proper context for the discussion of Pelevin is not postmodernism, but the traditional Russian cultural categories. For the author of this article the more fruitful way is to search for a variety of traditional and modern sources of cultural inspiration (intertextuality), which helped to establish the new forms of communication between writer and reader in the works of Pelevin.

    The article attempts to allocate and analyze the most essential characteristics of plays by A. Mardan's, a popular Russian-speaking Ukrainian playwright, and to inscribe his work in the context of the dynamics of the phenomenon of the new drama. The attempt of the author is to understand a complex post-Soviet reality in order to reflect it in the artistic space of the drama. The plays demonstrate the destruction of habitual human values, including moral, ethical, aesthetic, and other norms that guide people in life. At the same time, his plays exploit the techniques and elements of various genres of mass culture. One may say that certain principles have become an integral quality of Mardan's plays such as the approach of the plays to the truth of life, the external everydayness, the use of elements of documentary theater and the theater of absurd, the construction of the plot with an eye for entertainment or scandalous intrigue, philosophical overtones and the author's attitude to the depicted world. This indicates that his plays may be regarded as works of ‘the new drama’ that occupy a worthy place in the contemporary Russian-language drama of the post-Soviet period.

    The article describes Victor Erofeyev’s essay Love for stupidity, in which the Russianpostmodernist comes up with an uncompromising objection to the mass culture. The defence of high literature as an existential signpost leading to timeless values  is placed by the author in the socio-political context of modernization challenges faced by contemporaryRussia. Alongside highlighting this less familiar theme of Erofeyev’s works the analysis aims at drawing attention to the aporias in the writer’s considerations as well as confronting the essay with another sketches devoted to the changes of literary life in the conditions of the consumer society.
