This paper focuses on the issue of activating the local community, including its conditions and manifestations, and putting strong emphasis on the category of community potential, which is a multifaceted and dynamic phenomenon, contributing to changes in various areas of social life. Particular attention was paid to neighbourhood activity and its stimulation, including related initiatives, the importance of which was highlighted, while selected examples of good practices, implemented both within projects, organised campaigns, as well as spontaneous individual actions were brought up.

The article presents socio-demographic, physical-functional and cultural-symbolic change aspects of chosen local communities in Poland, which aretheresult of the gentrification process, making itself real in their space. In the first part of the article information about genesis and the course of gentrification with the characteristic of the main actors’ groups taking part in it is addressed. The second part of the article is devoted to the description of changes being experienced by local communities. Conclusions included in the end concentrate around consequences of progressive gentrification process for local communities and attempts to set a path to prevent negative aspect of theconsequences mentioned.

Contemporary researchers of local communities and human societies face a new and difficult task today. It is, on the one hand, related to the great interest in this topic and the difficulty of creating a new concept that would fully exhaust the scope of phenomena observed presently in local communities and human societies. On the other hand, the character of changes that have gained momentum in the first decade of the 21st century, and the description of their sources, become particularly difficult to describe and name. The present article is an attempt at an indication of the need of an evolution of perception on societal reality and the emerging new social issues. Contemporary paedagogy attempts to write about the necessity of awareness/ education related to the needs of establishment of local communities and the creation of bonds as a response to processes related to social life in times of globalisation. It is a fact that we are presently dealing with a change in the forms and character of local communities.

The discussion about cultural heritage versus development has been touched upon in many publications, and the role of cultural heritage is being deployed increasingly into transforming mere development efforts into efforts for sustainable development. By analysing recent literature which indicates the need for facilitation of cooperation between authorities and local communities, the theory of ownership and value of cultural heritage, and the close relationship between heritage protection and sustainable development, the article aims to discuss the role of the local community in managing monuments. The most relevant conclusions include the link between the protection of cultural heritage and the improvement of the quality of life of residents, their sense of identity and more durable bonds with the place of residence and the strife toward the achievement of local, sustainable development goals.

Opis:
This article is a combination of reporting and analysis, constituting a relatively innovative approach in the scientific literature. It combines a report on a science-topical conference with the author’s attempt to weigh up and analyse the 16 years (as of 2017 – Z.M.) of the “war on terror” in terms of security (both external and internal) and the Republic of Poland’s raison d’état with particular emphasis on what are termed “contemporary challenges and threats”, dynamically occurring in the so-called “broad security environment” (in the perspective of Central and Eastern Europevs. the EU and NATO) (see: Summary and Conclusions). The author has used his own holistic analytical-synthetic and predictive method in accordance with the analytical paradigm proposed by Col. dr hab. Mirosław Banasik (Ph.D.), professor at UJK (Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce, Poland) (2018 – see especially: p. 13).
