Opis:
The analysis of urban experience of modernity developed simultaneously with the analysis of collective memory. Urban space is related with a palimpsest metaphor, which includes urban memory in the history of memory understood as a history of the media. In recent years the relationship between memory and a city is analyzed on the examples featuring multiculturalism and migration movements of the cities of the Central Europe, e.g. in the Vienna monograph ca. 1900 Das Gedächtnis der Städte (The Memory of the City) by Moritz Csaky. On the other hand, the media paradigm is used by Christine Boyer, who analyses visual manifestations of city memory in her book The City of Collective Memory. Juxtaposition of the two mutually complementing scientific attitudes invokes a need to postulate a deeper analysis of the role of popular culture and visuality in shaping the memory of cities, as well as conducting further studies on cross-country and transnational “cultural tangles”.

Opis:
The turn of the millennium brought an increased interest in issues of multiculturalism, which became a focal point for debates about culture, especially in liberal democracies. The question is particularly important in that most people today live in heterocultural societies. The authors thus do not approach multiculturalism as the simple coexistence in society of members of various ethnic groups but rather as a theoretical basis for the scholarly analysis of the state and of society, which implement policies in regard to internal cultural (ethnic) diversity. Multiculturalism thus defines a social space in which people who adhere to different axiological, normative, religious or moral systems, and who are aware of these differences, live together. At the same time, state policy aims to include all of them in a social order which is being modified under the influence of cultural diversity. Multiculturalism can be presented on the one hand as an idea that is not apprehended directly but is known through concepts, and on the other hand, as an entity identified by the senses. The authors illustrate the transition from an idea to a state policy in regard to a multitude of ethnic cultures by reference to Australia and the Federal Republic of Germany.

Opis:
The article elaborates on the accomplishments of those centered round a magazine “Borussia. Culture. History. Literature” which, while following a constructivist vision of history, seeks an answer to a question about a role of the heritage of East Prussia and Germany in contemporary Poland. Thus, a challenge has been taken to not only examine the region’s past, but also to examine the creation of contemporary civil society which is aware of what was the past of the land on which they live. Elements of multicultural image of East Prussia emerging from “Borussia” articles, create a metaphoric “Atlantis of the North” — idealized multicultural land, dominated by the spirit of tolerance. Such an image, together with the idea of “open regionalism” comprises a preferred image of contemporary regional identity.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to try to determine the justifiability of applying the category of multiculturalism in the Polish context. The author claims that studies of diversity in Poland have to take into account that this diversity is functioning in the context of a single, dominant Polish Catholic culture which exerts enormous influence both on the manner in which Others are seen, and on the establishment and maintenance of social hierarchies. Overlooking this circumstance means that instead of being an instrument for the appreciation of cultural minorities the category of multiculturalism favours the reification of cultural differences and the further marginalization of the ’culturally Other’. Material from field research in the district of Uście Gorlickie, which is inhabited by Poles and Lemko Ukrainians, is used for illustration. In describing the conflict between advocates and opponents of the introduction of dual language signs, the author attempts to prove that the debate at the local level reflects the dominant vision in Poland of majority-minority relations.

Opis:
In Western societies, a crisis of multiculturalism has been observed in the last three decades and multicultural policies have been criticized by both the political right and left. The left worries about the liberal values that may be endangered by the beliefs of ethnic minorities, while the right sees ethnic minorities as a threat to national unity and security. Western societies are undergoing a policy crisis as it has come to be felt that some large Muslim minorities do not share Western values and are not loyal to their receiving country. In this study, the feminist perspective is discussed. Feminists argue that a concern for the preservation of cultural diversity should not overshadow the discriminatory nature of some tribal or traditional customs such as forced marriage, honour killing, or female genital mutilation. Currently, feminists and liberals agree that culture should not be used as an excuse for violations of women’s rights byminority groups. It is argued that multicultural policymust be reconsidered, as the clash between minority customs and women’s rights in receivingWestern societies has become evident.

Opis:
This article is about immigrants’ perceptions of their host society and cultural differences. The analysis is based on twenty in-depth interviews conducted in 2018 with persons from Turkey working in Poland. Their narratives are a rich source of information about the challenges of the integration process and about the opportunities and dilemmas of ethnically and religiously diverse groups in Polish society, which is becoming increasingly multicultural. The respondents pointed to the recent noticeable deterioration in the attitude of Poles toward foreigners in general, which translates into more negative attitudes toward Turks. The cultural differences most commonly noticed related to work culture and working conditions. Although Poland’s fairly large ethnic uniformity was mostly declared to be a hindrance in the adaptation process, some immigrants saw it as strengthening social cohesion and facilitating adaptation to life in the new country. In defining the cultural differences and expectations of the host society, the foreigners became more aware of the values, practices, and attitudes with which they had become acquainted. Some interviewees did not define the differences they observed as traits of the sending or receiving society but rather “de-nationalized” the differences and referred to other categories of diversity, for example, of a class nature.

Opis:
In reference to Anna Śliz’s book Wielokulturowość: stygmat współczesnego świata? Próba analizy socjologicznej [Multiculturalism: The Stigma of the Modern World? An Attempt at a Sociological Analysis], the subject of this article is multiculturalism as a phenomenon, a political project, and a real kind of existing society (multiculturalism is not the same as interculturalism or transculturalism). In the discourse on multiculturalism, many specifi c questions arise: the inevitability of the  phenomenon and its genesis; the beginnings and bases of multiculturalism as a political project and its challenges; the reality of multicultural societies - from affirmation to contestation. Model discourse over multiculturalism is confronted with a range of remarks, commentaries, and questions about its fundamental significance, for example, about the potential for realizing the idea of multiculturalism in Europe, and whether Australia and Canada are now definitely multicultural societies.
