Opis:
Issues concerning history and the construction of images of the past have always been of importance for the self-identification of individuals, social groups, governing institutions, states, and especially nations. Currently, two trends can be noticed, which may seem antagonistic, but actually condition and shape each other: renegotiating and redefining national historical narratives as well as the opening of national historiography to transnational or globalized perspective. National images and historical myths tend to increase integrity among the members of European communities only to a limited degree, and their importance to the highly normatively-oriented structures of the so called European identity — based on still less credible European memory, perceived by means of also normatively-oriented publicity — is rather doubtful. As a result, a scientific discipline has evolved, which studies subjective means of internalizing and utilizing the past rather than public aspects of culture and memory. The discipline involves the studies of tradition and passing thereof, which are rooted in the institution of qualitative sociological research. This article is about the scope and methods of such studies which are focused on how to tell about the past.

Opis:
Disabled people are a social category that is very often at the effect of the stereotypes and prejudices prevalent in society. Frequently such persons suffer marginalization or exclusion. A disability can be the source of a stigma that defines the life of a human being both in the individual and social dimension. Only a portion of disabled persons manage to counteract the social stigmatization effectively, and above all to overcome their own fears about appearing in public with a body that is not fully functional. The author presents the changes occurring in the lives of persons with physical disabilities after their engagement in sports activities. Using Fritz Schütze’s theory of process structures and Anselm Strauss’s work on identity, he tries to show that engaging in sports could make it possible for a disabled person to move from a trajectory of suffering as a stigmatized person toward a biographical plan of action involving specific turning points and a reconstruction of the person’s ego.

Opis:
Belarus is a typical borderline country featuring multi-ethnicity, including various cultures, denominations and languages co-existing one near the other. Current socio-linguistic situation in Belarus may be defined as socially conditioned diglossia. Russian is the language of the governing elites, all-level education, popular culture and mass media. Urban inhabitants speak almost entirely Russian, and the majority of village inhabitants speak Belarusian dialects. When, during Lukaszenka’s rule, Belarusian language fell once again in disgrace, it once again became a symbol of national revival and a fighting tool of opposition. Representatives of democratic elites speak Belarusian, but only when they hold informal meetings or political events. Based on biographic interviews held with the representatives of the Belarusian intelligentsia in Belarus, the Author has revealed a process of the narrators’ discovering an importance of a mother tongue as a sign of national identity. The process of realizing the importance of the Belarusian language in the life of an individual, as well as ethnic community, as well as a process of conscious learning of the language is, for contemporary Belarusians, one of the stages of shaping national identity. Learning the language is followed by participating in Belarusian symbolic culture and remembering history and reviving common memory, which finally leads to conscious identity with a mother land in a symbolic sense, which is broader than purely territorial reference.

Opis:
The proposed concept of social anchoring contained in this article allows issues of immigrant identity, adaptation, and integration to be combined. It allows limitations to the idea of integration and the subjective defining of identity to be overcome, and it also includes the socio-psychological resources that an individual can use to adapt to a changed social reality. The author begins by considering the meaning of identity for the analysis of contemporary society and the reasons for the problematic nature of the idea; she presents the colloquial and metaphoric uses of the concept of anchoring. She then proposes that anchoring should provisionally be defined as an individual’s search for essential points of reference and support that will allow him or her to achieve a relative socio-psychological stability in the environment. She points out various types of anchors: from legal-institutional (for instance, citizenship) and economic (for instance, material resources), through ties to a specific place (for instance, the place where one was born), to personal anchors (such as physical characteristics, physical practices, individual traits, and values), cultural aspects (for instance, language), and-most importantly from the sociological viewpoint-social anchors (contained in relations with friends and family). Although the proposed concept of social anchoring has emerged mainly from studies concerning the adaptation and integration of migrants, it should have application to more general sociological analyses.

Opis:
This article is an attempt to redefine the concept of free time in such a way as to take into account the nuances of the social determinants of adolescent leisure. Classic definitions of leisure have emphasized its disinterestedness, voluntary nature, and unproductiveness. Later researchers indicated that the issue was more complex. How people spend their free time is a derivative of their social position and cultural, social, and symbolic capital, and is also often a component of a chosen lifestyle or an element of identity. It is currently believed that how a person spends free time is also influenced by the individual’s gender, age, origin, and physical predisposition. In regard to youth leisure, the disappearance of clear divisions between work and rest time seems to be extremely important, especially in two areas: participation in extracurricular activities, and the huge role of smartphones and the Internet in the lives of young people, along with the associated “prosumption,” unregulated financial issues (making money online), and many other phenomena.

Opis:
The Author starts with a question whether a nation is a counterbalance to a unified Europe. In order to find the answer, the notion of group identity is evoked. The Author argues that the notion of European identity — which is just being coined — does not have any roots in ethnic or linguistic communities — contrary to national identity which has been shaped through ages. Neither territorial community, or political community or economic interests constitute equally strong a bond as cultural dimension — a heritage that has evolved from common roots and strong mutual interactions within an imagined community. National identity is of historical character and is based on the memory of past years of a nation’s existence. “European identity” is a rather weak equivalent to national identity. In order to build an European identity, one would have to ponder which variant of Europe’s history to choose. So far European identity cannot refer to any continuum. Its dimensions are not as variable as that of national identity. And its power of influence is rather week. This is why, despite the fact that both identities are relatively compatible, i.e. they do not exclude each other, and one cannot replace the other. Thus, the author concludes that any and all fears of a nation’s “dilution” within a uniform “European state” are groundless.

The article contains a qualitative analysis of statements by representatives of the Polish central administrative elite about the construction of their new roles and identity. It is assumed that one dimension of the new identity is the manner in which department directors (who were interviewed in 2013), define the concept of success, which seems ‘by definition’ to belong to the paradigm of a market economy. What does it thus mean for them and what are the consequences in terms of how they perceive their professional role? The author attempts to answer these questions.

This text provides a critical discussion of the dominant concepts used to identity soccer fans and proposes new ways of analyzing the fan phenomenon. The two most widespread interpretative frameworks divide fans into ‘traditional’ supporters and ‘consumer’ fans. The authors indicate that this division is not the only possible frame for viewing fans’ identity. The examples provided demonstrate that fans’ individual and collective identities do not develop solely on the basis of events associated with the soccer field. Among other things, their identities can be shaped by unexpected human or non-human factors or catastrophes, or by struggles to preserve the past or the club’s heritage. Such instances prove that the formation of identity involves more than the dichotomy between a traditional fan and a consumer fan. This text also contributes to expanding the interpretative realm in contemporary research into group identities.

Opis:
The authors of this article use the examples of the Donbass and Pridnestrovie regions to examine the relationship between regional identity, separatism, and armed conflict. On the basis of comparative methods of analysis, they describe the historical and sociological processes and political conditions that, over the course of history, produced the formation of a specific sense of regional separateness among the inhabitants of those regions. They prove that regional identity need not rest on centuries of tradition and that Soviet modernization could be a key component of that identity. This analysis of the relation between regional identity and war indicates that the popular explanation of the underpinnings of separatism in Eastern Europe by reference to identity is insufficient in the case of these two regions. In contemporary Donbass and in Pridnestrovie both, identity is constructed on the basis of a war narrative but has become a foundation for effective separatism only in connection with the interests of the local elites and/or external political and cultural factors.

Opis:
Research conducted by the author in the years 2009–2014 among the children of refugees from Chechnya has shown that what is most important in terms of their functioning in the new culture occurs primarily in the family/ethnic environment, in the process of enculturation. This means that even though manifestations of progressing acculturation may be observed in the external sphere, this does not guarantee that the process is also occurring in the internal sphere of attitudes, convictions, and values. In this connection the writer’s attention was drawn to how under-age refugees from post-Soviet lands create a sense of identity and ethnic belonging. In particular, she considered the degree to which being a refugee and the situation in which these children find themselves have a formative influence on their self-identification. External indicators of ethnic, cultural, and religious identification were also analyzed. The author has thereby established the model—based on the two alternative strategies of reconstruction and deconstruction—by which young refugees create their self-identification.

The situation of transsexual persons in Poland is not precisely known; there are only estimates determining the scale of the phenomenon. The lack of information fosters stereotypes and, not infrequently, injurious appraisal; fear of the unknown is also produced, and is gradually turning into widespread prejudice. A social analysis of the phenomenon of transsexuality is hampered by the predominance of the hetero- -normative discourse, including in scholarly spheres. The basic issue addressed by the author is the acceptance of transsexual persons, viewed from the perspective of their own personal experiences. These observations concern both the sphere of personal life as well as functioning in the macro-social space (school, work, etc.). In each of these spheres, a change of gender produces complications with which transsexual persons must grapple as they strive to live in harmony with their psychologically intuited gender

Reachable knowledge, which is a collection of socially negotiated constructs and narratives, imposes limits on possible ways of understanding the world around us. A dominant discourse becomes a boundary of cognition. The contemporary discourse on male sexual identity cements and limits it to a homosexual or heterosexual version. The socio-cultural rules producing hetero- and homosexuality can be particularly well viewed in the example of men who identify as heterosexuals yet have sex with other men. This article provides a recipe for the effective union of heterosexuality with homosexual desire, free of the danger of social stigma. At the same time, the article attempts to disclose how the development of male sexuality is restricted by modern modes of knowledge production in regard to male sexuality and by forcing men to practice their sexuality in a pre-specified manner. The article also gives voice to alternative ways of understanding male sexuality, especially through the lens of fluidity, changeability, and vagueness.

The author considers the situation prevailing in post-conflict societies, basing her reflections on the assumption that a key element of the peace process should be the formation (even if incomplete) of a model of group identity. As an example, she references the ethnic identities of the two main actors in the Northern Ireland conflict: the Irish Catholics and the Ulster Protestants. The decades of conflict in Ulster caused the emergence of an ethnic group identity that was defined as being “war-related,” and was oriented toward confrontation with the “enemy” and defense of the group’s rights. The author analyzes examples of creating common actions, initiated both from below and from the top down (the “shared future” policy), paying attention to the potential changes in ethnic attitudes and identities, in order to verify her assumptions.
