Opis:
The author characterizes the spread of nowist culture as a global phenomenon consisting in the compression of the time frame and the emergence of an extended present absorbing the past and the future into the compact time of global society. These results of the impact of technological development, the spread of communication technologies, new media, consumption culture, the market, and advertising have a negative influence on the life of the individual, the permanency of culture, and the transmission of knowledge. The author claims that we must therefore discover anew the value of permanency. Local factors have a modifying influence on global processes. In Polish society these are historically conditioned elements of the presentist culture (the communist heritage, the domination of peasant culture, the weakness of urban culture, Catholic culture) and the effects of the systemic transformation. When time was discovered to be an economically measurable value, its place came to be occupied by work. People higher on the economic ladder are characterized by a deficit of time, in contrast to lower income groups, who rather suffer from an excess of time. The author emphasizes that time could become a source of social inequalities in nowist culture.

Opis:
The paper seeks to identify the role of cultural and social diversity in economic development. It starts by defining the terms that are critical to the analysis, including diversity, fractionalization, polarization, social diversity, cultural diversity and economic resources, as well as providing the most significant indexes thereof. The main body of the paper interprets the notions of cultural and social diversity in terms of being a valuable economic resource. Furthermore, it collects a vast body of literature to demonstrate the relationship between the cultural/social diversity and economic development with regard to adverse or positive impact on the latter. In regard to the negative impact of diversity, the paper identifies it in the area of social communication, social capital and networks, as it effectively causes a decrease in productivity and increase in social conflict and isolation. The positive link is demonstrated with examples in the areas of innovation, creativity, usage of complementary abilities and experiences, and their role in increasing productivity. The paper refers to numerous data sources, studies and indexes illustrating how the economic systems of various countries perform in the context of the paper’s subject-matter.

The aim of this article is to analyze the concept of a consumer society, based primarily on the work of Zygmunt Bauman. Bauman’s works synthesize and modernize previous ideas about this type of society. The article presents the most important of Bauman’s thoughts on the issue, including the imperative of choice, the totality of commodification, praise for transience, and permanent insatiety. These ideas are subjected to critical analysis and illustrated with examples drawn from existing sources and the author’s own observations.

This is a reprint of an archival text by Jan Lutyński, an outstanding Polish sociologist, founder of the Łódź school of methodology, and co-founder of the Polish Sociological Association. The text is devoted to the imperfections of the political system in Poland in the 1970s–1980s and their negative social consequences in the form of “apparent activities.” On the thirtieth anniversary of Professor Lutyński’s death, the essay is worth re-reading as it is still topical and has inspired many authors.

Opis:
The author raises the issues of emotion indirectly - through the exploration of projection, i.e., dreams and fantasies about free time. This material shows that free time appears above all as an emotional space, as it is much easier to experience than to define. These fantasies and dreams, although divorced from reality, refer to it directly and convey important information about the consciousness, imagination and reflections of Polish society; they combine with daily realities and reflect their basic tendencies. The analysis confirms the continuing topicality of a thesis presented at the beginning of the nineties on the pragmatisation of Polish society’s consciousness and its orientation toward material and consumer values. In addition, it can be stated that the sphere of dreams or distant projects is becoming a sort of security vent or protective mechanism which allows persons to deal with serious problems of a personal and social nature.

Opis:
The author defines intellectual culture as a tendency to base decisions on objective analyses or the habit of investigating issues analytically. In the broader sense, intellectual culture may be considered to be the way the collective reacts to phenomena that appear in the real world. A high level of intellectual culture, in the author’s opinion, is shown by a modern form of thinking manifested in the ability to make use of abstracts and to take into account alternative systems of constructing opinions. On the basis of selected analyses of Polish scholars the author advances the hypothesis that Poland has failed to form proper institutional mechanisms favoring rational analysis in public life. The author demonstrates that this is the result of many factors, such as the long-lasting model of Sarmatian customs (including its providentialism), the strong and lasting influence of a radical form of romanticism, and also the nugatory influence of Enlightenment and positivist models. These factors have been accompanied by the unsuitability of educational and scholarly institutions, the delayed development of modern forms of economics, which force the use of rational calculations, and a structure of society that does not favor exchanges of ideas and deliberation.

Opis:
This article concerns uncertainty, which is considered by many social theorists (for instance, Zygmunt Bauman, Ulrich Beck, Daniel Bell, Eric Hobsbawm) to be a characteristic trait of the contemporary world. Uncertainty is produced by rapid, multidimensional changes in the conditions around us—by their instability and unpredictability—and by a lack of future vision. Continual change becomes an element of everyday life. Culture understood as a collection of permanent meanings, norms, and values loses its ordering function—it no longer serves to elucidate the world; the past does not provide helpful examples. There is an expansion of mutability, a multiplicity of possible choices, and an excess of information—which paradoxically, like its lack in an isolated society, is a cause of uncertainty, fear, and presentist thinking. In Polish society, these phenomena are strengthened by tradition and the sense of economic insecurity accompanying the systemic transformation.

The first aim of the article is to show the Elias perspective on phenomena connected with the musical life of society and to consider the figuration processes connected with human practices directed at music. The author reflects on the dual feedback of the activities of individuals and the structural determinants conditioning those activities. As an example, she discusses Elias’s case study of the socio-cultural and historical-economic background of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s creativity. The second aim of the article is to show the possibility of applying socio-musical figuration to various areas of human life associated with music, beginning with the question of the role of professional musicians and gender questions, through the political factors connected with musical creativity, and ending with the presence of music in the religious sphere and the rules governing the sacral context. Her reflections are premised on the idea that socio-musical life based on social norms and rules established during the civilization process is simultaneously undergoing a constant modification and transformation on account of the subjective activities of individuals.

The spiritual and religious life of people living within the lands of modern Belarus in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has been conditioned by the area’s centuries-old history of Christianity, by superstitions derived from the culture of the ancient Slavs, and by the materialistic and atheistic worldview and life of the Soviet Socialist regime. Current Belarusian legislation considers religious involvement to be a private interest of the individual, and thus there are no official statistics on the number of believers or their distribution by religion. The findings of various studies in this area differ considerably. In the context of the post-Soviet transformation of Belarusian society, some experts express the view that the role of religion has been increasing in the country; others speak of a reverse process. Still others write about demonstrations of the religiosity of Belarusians and still others believe that the spiritual dimension of Christianity in Belarus is often replaced by faithfulness to the traditions of Belarusians’ ancestors, and that a relatively large part of the population is far from true Christian piety. A general analysis of religious issues suggests that the phenomena are multifactorial, spiritual and social, and rather complex.

In reference to the theoretical reflections and research presented by Mikołaj Pawlak in the book Tying Micro and Macro: What Fills Up the Sociological Vacuum in 2018, the author of the article argues for the necessity of careful consideration in formulating research generalities, especially when they refer to terms or metaphors coined earlier, such as the idea of a sociological vacuum proposed in the 1970s by Stefan Nowak.

Opis:
Positive psychology is a rapidly developing branch of science and is gaining increasing popularity in the West and in Poland. Its main aim is to define the conditions necessary to achieve a subjective sense of well being. Considerable progress has been made in this direction already. There is no lack of ideas on the conditions that are required for living a positive, ‘full’ life, abounding in enriching experiences. The purpose of this text is to contrast the ideals behind certain concepts of positive psychology with the dominant values of consumer society. The vision of a good life set forward by, among others, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Martin Seligman, (the scholars who largely created the bases of positive psychology), would seem entirely incompatible with the priorities of consumer ideology. To what degree is it possible to harmonize the striving for well being with the challenges facing an ‘ordinary’ consumer? The author assumes that the contradiction could prove insurmountable and that the only choice provided by consumer society for psychological well being is economic well being.

The article features an analysis of the ideas of Yurij Levada, an eminent Russian academic, sociologist dealing both with theory and with practice of sociology, a founder of a research institution in Moscow known as Levada-Centre. Levada gave a special place to culture within sociology and he himself called his project on theoretical sociology an “attempt at culturally justified sociology” (grounded in a perspective orientated to culture). The project was based on structurally complex, culturally conditioned and symbolically indirect social actions. In his opinion, such knowledge of culture required to be looked at retrospectively, which provides for tackling the issue of social system reproduction while enabling to understand contemporary culture at the same time. This way of thinking was a basis for Levada’s analyses of the surrounding social reality, e.g. his analyses of intelligence or the concept of “simple Soviet man”.

In this article the authors reflect on human relations phenomena that were characteristic of Polish society in the second half of the 1980s. These phenomena were not new nor have they been observed solely in this society. They appear everywhere and are strengthened in times of scarcity. In Poland they were made more severe by the breakdown of the communist system and the crisis connected with the systemic transformation. This was characterized by a strong dualism involving: (1) the division of the social sphere into public and private; (2) the narrowing of the social sphere to the family, a network of friends, and informal ties—a division into ‘own’ and ‘other’; (3) a concentration on the present and on immediacy, with a dislike and inability to plan, think, or act in categories of the future; and (4) disintegrational, competitive, aggressive attitudes and behaviors, with a climate of distrust and enmity in human relations, and the application of a dual ethic—one for one’s ‘own’ people and another for ‘others.’ This amoral familism, which characterizes a society composed of a collection of extended small groups built around the family and enlarged by friends, neighbors, and colleagues, is opposed to the world of institutions and is conditioned by both history and culture. The authors consider it to be factor in social anomy.

The author reflects on time in contemporary culture—on changes in the experience and perception of time, and also on how temporal categories are used in analyses of social and cultural issues. She points out (1) new phenomena connected with the temporal regulation of collective life, and (2) new divisions and social differentiations in which a major role is played by the time dimension. The distribution of time and the manner of valuing time is changing, as is free time. The disappearance of calendars and extension of the present is accompanied by an excess of activities and lack of time in the world of wealth, and a simultaneous excess of time in the world of poverty and marginalization. These are traits of contemporaneity. An ‘unequal distribution of time’ appears in a ‘society of varying rhythms.’ Such phenomena are visible in Poland as well.
