Opis:
This article concerns the Tatar community in Poland and its image in public media in Podlasie. Above all, the author considers the place of Tatar programs in the space reserved for national and ethnic minorities in the programming of Radio Białystok and the Białystok division of Polish Television. The author addresses the question of how these broadcasts are conducted and also cooperation between the media and the ethnic minority in the last dozen or more years. His conclusions are based on empirical material deriving from analysis of the content of the internet archives of the Podlasie public media, legal acts and documents, and qualitative interviews with representatives of the Tatar community and local media.

The author reviewed the contents of newspapers and weekly magazines appearing in EasterWeek 2010 in search of topics, symbols and events connected with Easter. She determined that themedia shaping public opinion, particularly the daily press, displayed a lively interest in the subject of the holiday, although part of thematerial in the weeklies was tabloid in nature, concentrating on controversial motifs and curiosities, and there was an avoidance of any discussion of the essence of Easter - its traditions, symbols and Christian cultural values.

Opis:
The subject of this text is integration with the West in Ukrainian public debate in the period between the Orange Revolution and the Euromaidan (2004–2014). The author suggests that the gradual shift in public opinion after 2006, from an EU orientation toward Ukraine’s integration with the Eurasian Customs Union (since 2014 the Eurasian Union, the EAU), was connected with the passivity of pro-Western intellectuals. Having allowed themselves to be pushed out of the newspapers and national television channels, which belong to oligarchs, they found a communications niche in new media forums, where contact with the public is much more limited in terms of numbers. The author also points out the manipulation of public opinion by state services during Janukovych’s presidency for the purpose of marginalizing the national-democratic camp. The author analyzes the changes in opinions expressed by Jurii Andruchovych: from articulating openness to the European project and a civil concept of the Ukrainian nation, through doubting in the possibility of integration with the EU, to accenting the ethnic qualities of Ukrainianness and an elite exclusiveness. In the author’s opinion, another cause of the lack of stability in public opinion on EU integration was EU policy, which was devoid of a long-term strategy in regard to Ukraine.

Opis:
This article is devoted to the question of the recontextualization of populist topoi in the public sphere. Recontextualization is a process by which a change in the author, recipient, or context of a communication alters its meaning. Populism is understood as a discursive strategy in reference to a limited number of topoi, such as values (for in stance, freedom); criticism of authority; appeals to emotions (for example, the sense of threat and fear); and reference to national identity and history to obtain social support. The authors of the article analyze how these topoi change during their flow between various channels of communication: the internet forum of the Lech Poznań fan club, the local press (Głos Wielkopolski and a local supplement to Gazeta Wyborcza), the blog of the city mayor, and the facebook page of a municipal official. The research, based on a historical, critical analysis of the discourse, shows that when the press and local politicians’ discuss topics with the fan forum, the result is the legitimation of the fan forum’s position and its broader effect in the public sphere.

Opis:
This article analyses the de-communization laws passed in Ukraine in May 2015 and the public debate they evoked. The author presents the circumstances in which the laws were passed and describes the thought processes of their drafters from the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance. Three discourses are distinguished in the debate: the expert, the national-liberal, and the deconstructivist. With the exception of representatives of the national-liberal discourse, the debaters were critical of the laws and expected either their rejection by the president or their fundamental amendment. In the end, however, the laws passed into force in their first version. Drawing conclusions from this failure of the participants in the debate, the author analyses the relations between the intellectual field and the political field in Ukraine and also the internal relations of the former—between its participants within the country and abroad. In conclusion, the author ponders the strategy that should be adopted by Ukrainian intellectuals for the purpose of increasing their influence on the decision-making of politicians.

Opis:
Polish media has played an active role in the policy towards Ukraine, particularly from the outbreak of the Revolution of Dignity and war with Russia, but this subject has not received in-depth academic treatment. The author describes the discourse of Polish mass media on the subject of Ukraine, using selected television stations and  newspapers as examples. The most important television stations (TVP, TVN, Polsat) do not present a  uniform image of Ukraine, and their discourse is in a large part reactive, in connection with current events. The situation is slightly different in the case of the print media. Three different types of discourse can be distinguished. The weekly Do Rzeczy continues the political tradition of Józef Piłsudski. It displays considerable interest in the former eastern borderlands and is distrustful towards Russia. The weekly Przegląd refers indirectly to the traditions of national democracy and the political realists of the People’s Republic of Poland period, being critical of Ukraine and pointing out the importance of relations with Russia. Gazeta Wyborcza has in large measure inherited the ideas of Jerzy Giedroyc. It emphasizes the need for reconciliation with Ukraine and for supporting it in its democratic and pro-European strivings.
