Opis:
For the teaching of history in schools to be effective, it must be useful for something – either in an intellectual sense (for a better understanding of the world) or in a practical sense (for various professions related to the humanities). The only purpose of teaching an “encyclopedia of facts” is that it is good to have a minimum of knowledge in every field. Teaching history to mark group identity is acceptable, as is any education in the field of national culture, provided it is not exclusive with regard to the heritage and achievements of others. As a history teacher, the author does not accept the teaching of history for the purpose of inculcating a sense of national pride. He would like the study of history to increase the intellectual abilities of students, and in effect, their wisdom.

Opis:
The author analyzes the narrative of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk using the category of moral capital, which is defined as a supply of moral stories influencing the moral status of the collective entity described as perpetrator or victim of a given event. The author considers that the decision, in 2008, to create the museum was one of the most important initiatives of Polish historical policy. From the beginning, the idea of the museum was the source of disputes, primarily concerning the shape of the Polish narrative about the war. Discussions on the subject and divisions in the political scene led to a spectacular “takeover” of the museum shortly after its opening in 2017. The management was changed and numerous alterations to the main exhibitions were made. The first version of the exhibition stressed the universalism of the experiences of civilians, including Poles, as victims of war-time terror, poverty, fear, occupation, forced labor, or extermination. After analyzing the narrative content of the exhibition opened in March 2019, the author of the article claims that in the modified version we can observe the (re)construction of a heroic narrative, aimed at reinforcing the moral capital of Poles.

Opis:
This article is devoted to the construction of the concept of the “hero” and of “heroism.” In contrast to the majority of Western works on societies that did not experience direct mass war actions during the Second World War and, in the opinion of some scholars, have entered the “post-heroic era,” the author concentrates on Ukrainian society, which since 2014 finds itself in a state of political, social, and military conflict in connection with the mass protests in the winter of 2013–2014, Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014, and the ongoing war with separatists in two eastern regions of the country. The author’s main aim is to analyze the process of the social construction of a hero in conflict conditions. While making use of the examples of activities serving to make heroes of the participants of the Revolution of Dignity and the war in Donbass, the author presents (1) the means of socially creating important meanings and stories about the “new Ukrainian heroes,” (2) the entities taking part in that process, and (3) the function of commemorating heroes in a society experiencing war.The author claims that the armed conflict in Ukraine, which in a brief space of time produced thousands of victims, resulted in the crystallization of national borders and of the political community, with its consolidation in the face of a common enemy. She presents the role of “new heroes” in these processes.

Opis:
This article concerns the changes that have been occurring in Poles’ collective memory not only in regard to historical policy but also in regard to spontaneous social activeness. The author’s empirical basis was formed by interviews with the organizers and participants of protests against plans to change the name of a street [ul. Dąbrowszczaków], and of other activities in the years 2016–2019 aimed at popularizing the history of. The problem is presented in the context of the debate among historians, publicists, and politicians of right-wing and left-liberal circles over the historical policy. The author interprets attempts to remove the civil war volunteers from the public sphere in Poland as part of a broader historical policy aimed at achieving cultural hegemony over Poles’ social memory and identity. He analyzes the protests in defense of this volunteers primarily in the context of the generational changes that have enabled the appearance of a new, leftist “memory actor.”

Opis:
This essay contains a description and critical appraisal of the contemporary Ukrainian state’s policy in regard to memory of the Volhynian and Galician massacres of 1943–1945. The author engages in polemics with Tomasz Stryjek, who recently published a book on this and other issues: Ukraina przed końcem Historii. Szkice o polityce państw wobec pamięci [Ukraine Before the End of History: Essays on State Policy in Regard to Memory]. In the author’s opinion, Stryjek one-sidedly, or even naively, places hope in the idea that the EU, in the not-too-distant future, will exert effective pressure on the government in Kiev to make it adapt its narrative about the activities of the OUN and UIA against Poles and Jews to European standards of memory about the Second World War. In the author’s opinion, the Ukrainian narrative about the activities of the OUN and UIA is based on the erroneous conviction—which is comfortable for the Ukrainian side—of equal guilt in the Polish-Ukrainian conflict of 1939–1947. He argues that there should be no cessation of efforts to remind Ukrainian historians and authorities about the responsibility to condemn, unambiguously, the mass crimes committed by national independence groups.

Opis:
This article contains the findings of a study of the narrative of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War in Kiev as a form of contemporary realization of a historical policy. In independent Ukraine, the Museum departed from the Soviet heroic-romantic narrative and replaced it with a story of war as a universal human cataclysm. At the same time, there was a clear Ukrainization of the narrative, for the pragmatic purpose of building a nation state. Simultaneously, the Museum is engaged in commemorative and propaganda activities concerning the ongoing war with Russia. The author decodes the palimpsest of symbols and narratives. He analyzes forms of remembrance, the organization of exhibitions, and ways of managing the Soviet heritage and symbolism. He analyzes the narrative about the war in Donbass in categories of familiarity and otherness.
