Opis:
The article is an attempt at contemporary interpretation of Antonina Kłoskowska’s theory of culture. The Author starts with a brief summary of her concept and follows with his analysis and elaboration on a few interesting issues which are the most inter- esting in his opinion. They include: national culture and the culture of a national society (i.e. a society, the members of which regard themselves also as members of a national community, an essence of integrative functions of national culture and conciliative functions of artistic heritage.

Opis:
Belarus is a typical borderline country featuring multi-ethnicity, including various cultures, denominations and languages co-existing one near the other. Current socio-linguistic situation in Belarus may be defined as socially conditioned diglossia. Russian is the language of the governing elites, all-level education, popular culture and mass media. Urban inhabitants speak almost entirely Russian, and the majority of village inhabitants speak Belarusian dialects. When, during Lukaszenka’s rule, Belarusian language fell once again in disgrace, it once again became a symbol of national revival and a fighting tool of opposition. Representatives of democratic elites speak Belarusian, but only when they hold informal meetings or political events. Based on biographic interviews held with the representatives of the Belarusian intelligentsia in Belarus, the Author has revealed a process of the narrators’ discovering an importance of a mother tongue as a sign of national identity. The process of realizing the importance of the Belarusian language in the life of an individual, as well as ethnic community, as well as a process of conscious learning of the language is, for contemporary Belarusians, one of the stages of shaping national identity. Learning the language is followed by participating in Belarusian symbolic culture and remembering history and reviving common memory, which finally leads to conscious identity with a mother land in a symbolic sense, which is broader than purely territorial reference.

The author focuses on the national emancipation strivings of part of the Kashubian elite in Poland. She proposes two interpretive views that could be helpful in understanding the ethnic processes presently occurring in the Kashubian community. The first derives from the category of nationalism, while the second refers to the concept of identity politics. The use of each makes it possible to perceive various aspects of the Kashubian national idea, although, as the author argues, the perspective of identity politics appears to be of more research interest and was the view primarily employed in analyzing the empirical material.

Opis:
The article contains an analysis of the academic and popular political discourses concerning the Ukrainian nation. Its aim is to point out atypical phenomena which could constitute little-known factors destabilizing or integrating national self-representation in Ukraine. The inconsistency of these concepts occurs above all at the level of macro-social discourses. What is involved is the presence in politics of content associated with the radical right and its primordial understanding of the nation, accompanied by low support for any sort of national or civil idea among the inhabitants of Ukraine. In the academic discourse the dominant western European theories of nation clash with a specific understanding of the terminology used in Russian scholarship. On the other hand, in local discourses at the meso-social level, there are phenomena that could be integrating factors for the image of the Ukrainian nation. There, language, popular culture, and various ideas about the past intermingle. In southern Ukraine, concepts can be found in which the nation is a political category quite aside from ethnic differences or the language of communication. Soviet times introduced the state factor, which is independent of ethnicity and which was later given content (rather worse than better) by the Ukrainian state. In these cases, Ukrainianness appears as a superior principle in regards to ethnic differentiation. The political situation of Ukraine since 2014, however, does not favor the development of this model of the Ukrainian nation.

Opis:
Issues concerning history and the construction of images of the past have always been of importance for the self-identification of individuals, social groups, governing institutions, states, and especially nations. Currently, two trends can be noticed, which may seem antagonistic, but actually condition and shape each other: renegotiating and redefining national historical narratives as well as the opening of national historiography to transnational or globalized perspective. National images and historical myths tend to increase integrity among the members of European communities only to a limited degree, and their importance to the highly normatively-oriented structures of the so called European identity — based on still less credible European memory, perceived by means of also normatively-oriented publicity — is rather doubtful. As a result, a scientific discipline has evolved, which studies subjective means of internalizing and utilizing the past rather than public aspects of culture and memory. The discipline involves the studies of tradition and passing thereof, which are rooted in the institution of qualitative sociological research. This article is about the scope and methods of such studies which are focused on how to tell about the past.

Opis:
In the last period of her professional career, Antonina Kłoskowska focused on issues related to national culture and nation itself, which is evident e.g. in her publication National Cultures at the Grass-Root Level. The article presents Kłoskowska’s main agruments concerning the notion of “national culture”. The author regarded this specific type of culture as one that could be characterized as symbolic, compound and coherent in the syntagmatic sense. Kłoskowska points out that, in order to be recognized as a member of a national community, it is necessary to acquire and refer to the canonical resources of its culture. In the second part of the article some of the findings of contemporary Polish researchers are laid out, which correspond or directly relate to some of Kłoskowska’s ideas. A comparison and analysis of their views leads to a conclusion that their diversification does not generally mean that they are completely distant in their judgments but rather that various aspects are stressed in different ways. This attests, however, to the fact that the authors belonged to diverse intellectual formations.

Opis:
This article presents a typology of the transformation of ideas about nations and national identity in East Central Europe, with particular consideration of Poland. The author claims that in consequence of accelerating processes affecting the choice of national identity the structure of ethnic peoples is undergoing qualitative changes. Ethnicity is increasingly less likely to determine national identity. However, in spite of manifestations of supranational integration and globalization, individual nations are not declining; on the contrary, national ties primarily turn out to be more important than supra-national interests, which are diluted and not based on strong community ties. At the same time, nations are acquiring pluralist traits.

Opis:
The article is devoted to a critical analysis of current controversies concerning the Polish national identity, and the interpretation of the impact of nobles’ democracy on the demise of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. It considers the role of national identity as a factor influencing civic culture and, therefore, determining its usefulness in assuring the proper functioning of the constitutional order. The analysis assumes that (1) the current global order is the product of the emergence of nation-states; (2) that a nation-state cannot exist without civil society grounded in the concept of national identity and patriotism. Patriotism is opposed here to nationalism; similarly, cosmopolitism is opposed to internationalism. Patriotism and cosmopolitism are compatible and imply an open-minded, inclusive attitude to different national identities. Both nationalism with its focus on superiority of one’s own nation, and internationalism — rejection of the nation-state in the name of an imaginary global, stateless community — are exclusive. These both exclusive postures present a threat to civil society.

Opis:
The article contains a synthesis of analyses and research into national consciousness conducted in the years 2010–2012 among local multiethnic communities in Zaporozhye, which is an area near the Ukrainian-Russian border. In Ukraine, as in the majority of post-Soviet states, there are many people who have considerable difficulty in defining their national consciousness: they are undecided as to their national allegiance and are culturally attached to two or more nations or elements of their culture. It is difficult at this time to foresee whether in the end they will declare themselves for one national consciousness to the exclusion of others, or if a new community will emerge. The present processes of forming the national consciousness of contemporary Ukrainians reflect the influence of historical events and the current policies of the state.

Opis:
According to certain appraisals, the Russian-Ukrainian war of 2014, euphemistically called ‘the Ukrainian crisis’, has largely confirmed the country’s dramatic split and the division of loyalties between the ‘East’ and ‘West, or between the ‘Eurasian’ and ‘Eu-ropean’ paths of development, embodied by Russia and the European Union. In other appraisals, however, the Ukrainian nation is seen as significantly more united than was believed by many experts and politicians, and public support for Russia’s aggression, outside of the occupied Crimea and Donbass, is considered to be nearly non existent. The author of the text does not deny that Ukraine remains divided in various regards, but he argues that the main—and actually the only important—line of division exists not between ethnic Russians and Ukrainians (Russophobes and Ukrainophones), or between the East and West, but is rather ideological in nature and divides two types ofUkrainian identity: non-/anti-Soviet and post-/neo-Soviet (or ‘European’ and ‘EasternSlavic’). All the remaining factors, such as ethnicity, language, region, income, educa-tion, or age, correlate in varying degrees to this main element. Yet regardless of howthey may divide the country’s population, an exterior threat to the nation makes themlargely irrelevant. At the same time, such a threat raises the important question of the values embodied in these two types of Ukrainian identity.
