Opis:
The author investigates epistemic, methodological and ethical challenges coming out of the so-called ethnographic revisit, namely the reexamination of ‘fieldwork’ sites that underwent historical change. She explores one of the most well-known research undertakings in post-1945 Polish social sciences, a study of urban family life styles carried out by a sociologist Andrzej Siciński and his team in the late nineteen seventies. In years 2005–2006 she returned to several families who had been observed and interviewed by Siciński’s group to collect material for her own socio-historical inquiry about experiences of scarcity during and after communist era. Her last visit to Siciński’s interlocutors took place in 2013 with a more general aim to critically engage with intellectual tools (theories, fieldwork instructions and notes) that Siciński’s team employed in the study of ‘ordinary people’. The method of ethnographic revisit can serve as a valuable tool to contextualize and historicize ‘symbolic violence,’ i.e. normative, sociological and political assumptions embedded in everyday language and physical interactions, that inevitably shapes the core and each phase of sociological research. The series of revisits demonstrate the unsolved tension between the practice of sociological cataloguing and a desire to present an individual, comprehensive and historical portrait of ‘Siciński’s families’ as they have undergone the shift from the state-socialism to the neo-liberal economy and society.

Opis:
In sociological and anthropological studies, people often appear as anonymous representatives of their groups. The question arises of what we could learn about them if we had the opportunity, even many years later, to discover their identities. The author answers this question by a case study derived from Józef Chałasiński’s classic work ‘The Younger Generation of Peasants’ (1938), which was based on life histories submitted to a competition for rural youth. On the basis of memories, documents, and other sources, the author of the present article reconstructs the biography of a peasant from Central Poland, Józef Próchniak (1876–1934) from the village of Dęba. Appearing marginally as ‘Józef’ in one of the life histories submitted to the competition, he is revealed to have been a person of rich biography. This article describes Próchniak’s relations with his social environment and with broader history and is a sociological account of one hundred years of history in his village and neighbourhood. The example demonstrates the misconceptions that exist about ‘classes without history’ and shows that writingthe history of ‘ordinary people’ is possible.
