Opis:
This article is a description of the relation between Polish culture and the West in Czeslaw Milosz’s thought, and an attempt to answer the question of its relevance to the current social situation and the mentality of Poles. Milosz noted that Polish culture is characterized by gentleness. He pointed out the difference between the twentieth century social and political experiences of Poles and of citizens of the West, and for this reason distanced himself from nihilism in post-war France and materialism in the United States in the sixties. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the penetration of Western cultural patterns is visible in Poland. However, despite the change of the political system, the same traits that characterized Poles in the mid-twentieth century are also observable. Poles, being unable to find their identity in the new social and political conditions, are still looking for a model for their culture.

Opis:
The author characterizes the spread of nowist culture as a global phenomenon consisting in the compression of the time frame and the emergence of an extended present absorbing the past and the future into the compact time of global society. These results of the impact of technological development, the spread of communication technologies, new media, consumption culture, the market, and advertising have a negative influence on the life of the individual, the permanency of culture, and the transmission of knowledge. The author claims that we must therefore discover anew the value of permanency. Local factors have a modifying influence on global processes. In Polish society these are historically conditioned elements of the presentist culture (the communist heritage, the domination of peasant culture, the weakness of urban culture, Catholic culture) and the effects of the systemic transformation. When time was discovered to be an economically measurable value, its place came to be occupied by work. People higher on the economic ladder are characterized by a deficit of time, in contrast to lower income groups, who rather suffer from an excess of time. The author emphasizes that time could become a source of social inequalities in nowist culture.

Opis:
The author defines intellectual culture as a tendency to base decisions on objective analyses or the habit of investigating issues analytically. In the broader sense, intellectual culture may be considered to be the way the collective reacts to phenomena that appear in the real world. A high level of intellectual culture, in the author’s opinion, is shown by a modern form of thinking manifested in the ability to make use of abstracts and to take into account alternative systems of constructing opinions. On the basis of selected analyses of Polish scholars the author advances the hypothesis that Poland has failed to form proper institutional mechanisms favoring rational analysis in public life. The author demonstrates that this is the result of many factors, such as the long-lasting model of Sarmatian customs (including its providentialism), the strong and lasting influence of a radical form of romanticism, and also the nugatory influence of Enlightenment and positivist models. These factors have been accompanied by the unsuitability of educational and scholarly institutions, the delayed development of modern forms of economics, which force the use of rational calculations, and a structure of society that does not favor exchanges of ideas and deliberation.

Opis:
This article concerns uncertainty, which is considered by many social theorists (for instance, Zygmunt Bauman, Ulrich Beck, Daniel Bell, Eric Hobsbawm) to be a characteristic trait of the contemporary world. Uncertainty is produced by rapid, multidimensional changes in the conditions around us—by their instability and unpredictability—and by a lack of future vision. Continual change becomes an element of everyday life. Culture understood as a collection of permanent meanings, norms, and values loses its ordering function—it no longer serves to elucidate the world; the past does not provide helpful examples. There is an expansion of mutability, a multiplicity of possible choices, and an excess of information—which paradoxically, like its lack in an isolated society, is a cause of uncertainty, fear, and presentist thinking. In Polish society, these phenomena are strengthened by tradition and the sense of economic insecurity accompanying the systemic transformation.

The author reflects on time in contemporary culture—on changes in the experience and perception of time, and also on how temporal categories are used in analyses of social and cultural issues. She points out (1) new phenomena connected with the temporal regulation of collective life, and (2) new divisions and social differentiations in which a major role is played by the time dimension. The distribution of time and the manner of valuing time is changing, as is free time. The disappearance of calendars and extension of the present is accompanied by an excess of activities and lack of time in the world of wealth, and a simultaneous excess of time in the world of poverty and marginalization. These are traits of contemporaneity. An ‘unequal distribution of time’ appears in a ‘society of varying rhythms.’ Such phenomena are visible in Poland as well.

Opis:
The author presents the socio-cultural framework of the process of formulating and implementing public policies/activities (including their analysis and evaluation). He gives grounds for the idea that socio-cultural factors have a deciding influence on the present low level of effectiveness of public activities/policies in Poland (although structural and economic factors also have an impact). Reference to the phenomenon of a ‘sociological vacuum’ and its consequences (such as minute interest in public issues, and lack of responsibility for public activities and for meeting the needs of others) is important in the analysis. The author points to the historical origins of the phenomenon and refers to earlier studies. He claims this vacuum is responsible for the clumsiness characterizing present attempts to deal with various collective problems—particularly the more complicated ones, whose resolution would require considerable social capital, analytical capacity, and the connection of social and economic resources. In his opinion, public politics in Poland could remain for a long time in its present shape—characterized by the creation of legal regulations without much use of analytics, and by unilateral actions of the political class and the strongest interest groups.

Opis:
The author analyses a history of research on culture in communist Poland and the USSR (later Russian Federation). She finds similarities and differences. During the time of communist Poland a tendency was to standardize the supply of culture and make the access to it more democratic. The basic task of the sociology of culture in communist Poland was to control the advancement process of culture dissemination and research into the various forms of participation. However, in the second half of the 70s attention was more and more focused on the directions of cultural sociology development and functions. Following the fall of communism this discipline was faced with a challenge of embracing all the important directions of changes while indicating a now socio-cultural model at the same time. In the USSR, on the other hand, the government was interested only in the cultural research which was to confirm a hypothesis on fast cultural development of masses. Sociology of culture did not exist as a science, though. Following years of deep crisis, when perestroika period began, sociologists of post soviet Russia faced a serious challenge: how to move from “the only one true” Marxist paradigm to the mastering and usage of various theories which functioned in sociology around the world. The Author indicated the contribution in this respect i.a. of Vladimir Yadov or academics circled around Yurij Levada. In general one can say that in Poland as well as in Russia, the sociology of culture following the fall of communist regime and following certain major political, economic, social and cultural changes, found itself in entirely new reality.

The time of the pandemic has redefined most areas of social life. including the world of music in the broad sense. Paradoxically. the virus itself turned out to be a kind of culture catalyst. The aim of this article is to present—at the exploratory level—the subject of people’s practice of music during the COVID-19 pandemic. The text will discuss selected aspects and processes related to the practice of musical. The main focus will be on showing how the musical life of society— confined to the Internet out of necessity—has evolved during the pandemic.

Opis:
The author refers to Roland Barthes’s early concept of mythology in analyzing the films of Jerzy Kawalerowicz, one of the most outstanding Polish directors of the twentieth century. He interprets three of Kawalerowicz’s films, Pociąg [Night Train], Matka Joanna od Aniołów [Mother Joan of the Angels] and Faraon [Pharaoh], which are read in the mythological register and in the political context. First the statements of the director in regard to each film are presented, then the judgments of film critics are provided, and finally the author gives his own interpretation. Night Train is shown as a film addressing the wrongs of the Stalinist era, and the problem of a totalitarian state. Mother Joanne of the Angels questions the sense of ideology in a totalitarian world, and is partially the director’s search for political identity, while Pharaoh is a look at the post-October reformers and the reasons for their failure. Pharaoh also provides a new vision of the state.

Opis:
Witold Jedlicki (1929–1995), an important, if somewhat disregarded Polish sociologist, began work at the University of Warsaw as the first assistant of professor Stanislaw Ossowski, member of Ossowski’s circle, also known as the Warsaw School of Sociology. Little, however, is known of Jedlicki’s life after he emigrated to Israel in 1962; in present day Poland he is remembered mainly as the author of a single text Chamy i Żydy published in 1962 in Kultura [Culture], a leading Polish emigré journal appearing in Paris. Through research of Polish and Israeli archives, study of publications in political and academic institutional history as well as interviews with Jedlicki’s brother Jerzy and Chanan Rapaport, at that time head of the National Institute for Research in the Behavioral Sciences the author was able to partly reconstruct his career abroad in Israel and the US, including contributions to Kultura and later criticism of the political situation in Poland and Israel. Conversations with Jedlicki’s friends and acquaintances, his own texts (published and unpublished), and particularly his correspondence with Jerzy Giedroyc, editor in chief of Kultura provide a new psychological insight into the intellectual history of a scholar still quoted by the Polish school of sociology in discussions and interpretations of Polish society.
