The situation of transsexual persons in Poland is not precisely known; there are only estimates determining the scale of the phenomenon. The lack of information fosters stereotypes and, not infrequently, injurious appraisal; fear of the unknown is also produced, and is gradually turning into widespread prejudice. A social analysis of the phenomenon of transsexuality is hampered by the predominance of the hetero- -normative discourse, including in scholarly spheres. The basic issue addressed by the author is the acceptance of transsexual persons, viewed from the perspective of their own personal experiences. These observations concern both the sphere of personal life as well as functioning in the macro-social space (school, work, etc.). In each of these spheres, a change of gender produces complications with which transsexual persons must grapple as they strive to live in harmony with their psychologically intuited gender

The author analyzes attitudes to the phenomenon of sexuality on the basis of two theoretical perspectives, the evolutionary and the feminist, between which there has long been conflict. In his opinion, however, they are only seemingly contrary. The main texts of both trends of thought concern entirely different problems and at the substantive level there is basically no contradiction between them. It is important that evolutionary theory often undermines existing cultural schemas, although this is rarely perceived by proponents of feminist theories. Evolutionists, in turn, rather too often identify feminism with radical social constructivism. Another extreme is a view that could be described as evolutionary sexism, consisting in justifying the gender status quo by reference to biological essentialism. After elimination of the extreme approaches, which are rare in any case, it is possible to use the results of evolutionary research in the debate over gender equality and to transform the two monologues into a cohesive dialogue; this, in the author’s opinion, is an important task for empirically oriented social theory

The author examines the difference of the role of migration in men’s and women’s careers. The theoretical entry point is Merton’s concept of opportunity structure and its significance for clarifying the means by which individual social actors - male and female migrants - achieve their goals. On the basis of qualitative research conducted among migrants (a series of in-depth interviews of a career-biographical nature) the career paths of migrants within the country and abroad are presented: both in objective terms and in terms of the migrants’ subjective perceptions, including the significance they themselves ascribe to the role of migration. In addition, the author tests the hypothesis thatmen andwomen react differently to the opportunity structure connected to migration and take advantage of it differently.

The article examines the ways in which women make sense of the opportunity structures in which they operate as female attorneys in Poland. The study applies Joan Acker’s theory of gendered organization and a narrative approach to the analysis of interview data with 15 Polish female attorneys who practice law and are members of the Warsaw Chamber of the Bar. These women are pursuing their careers in a highly competitive and still male-dominated profession. The results demonstrate the continuing struggle of women to reconcile the often conflicting expectations and roles of professional and personal lives. The findings point towards four gendering processes that venture from the structure of the profession of attorney in Poland: professionally committed women are not limited by their family life; women need to invest more in activities that attract new clients; male attorneys are attributed greater authority; and women are more empathic. These processes sustain gender inequalities in the profession of attorney as they carry expectations of women to adapt to the existing professional structures in order to access more equal career opportunities. However, by making sense of the shared experiences of work-life conflict and of the feminine/masculine dichotomy, women exert agency to their claims to professional expertise.

Opis:
This article focuses on the relations between men and women in the area of family life, and in particular the situation of fathers and their approach to biological differences between the genders. Using the theoretical perspective developed by Norbert Elias, the author shows how the organization of social life, which she considers to be based on the inequality of men and women, is legitimized by emphasis in the process of naturalizing gender differences. On the basis of qualitative research, methods of defining fatherhood in reference to that difference are depicted, as are the strategies which individuals adopt to deal with it, and the problems that are connected with this in contemporary Polish society.

The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the undiscussed and yet very interesting issue of fashion and the clothing of senior citizens. The issue is analyzed here in relation to Georg Simmel’s concept of fashion and specifically his idea of imitation and distinctiveness inscribed in the fashion system. Simmel seems to indicate that the social order determined by fashion is more often respected by women than by men. Therefore, the issue of fashion and clothing is discussed in relation to the gender of the individual. Age is also important. In her own research among people aged 60 and over (a diagnostic survey and interviews), the author of the article sought answers to the following questions: what do seniors think about the clothing of today’s older people? Do they think they dress fashionably – in the sense of following the spirit of modern times, which promotes youth? What determines the way seniors dress in contemporary Poland? The respondents were aware of a change in how seniors dress today and view the change positively. The fashion behavior of seniors is more often approved by women than by men and by younger seniors rather than older ones.

The author undertakes to analyse the integration discourse contained in guides for immigrants published in Poland. She concentrates on two major aspects: first, on the portrayal of Polish religiosity, and second, on descriptions of gender relations andthe social roles of men and women. Information booklets for foreigners are intended to educate foreigners about life in their new country. Theymay also be read as a self-portrait of the receiving society, defining its key values and preferred integration methods. In the case of the guides under analysis here, the Europeanization of the discourse on integration and foreigners is clear: they create an opposition between European values and models and those of non-European cultures. In the sphere of gender relations, the guides propagate equal rights, and the egalitarian vision of the receiving society is contrasted with the images of the non-egalitarian sending countries. In the sphere of religiosity, one of the guides in particular portrays Polish life as being imbued with the influence of Christianity.

The author considers the mechanisms limiting women’s access to power and the validity of their advance to positions of authority. She uses research into two extremely different social institutions-the Italian Mafia and the Polish Sejm (parliament)-in an attempt to illustrate that the contemporary process of redefining traditional cultural concepts of gender is not only an indicator of the spread of pro-equality attitudes but could equally well be considered an element of activity intended to preserve the patriarchal order. From this viewpoint, the ad hoc reconstructing of cultural concepts of gender is chiefly aimed at maintaining the constituting principle of the patriarchy- -maintaining men’s domination at the price of breaking men’s monopoly on power. This process could therefore be perceived also as a symptom of the durability of the patriarchal model of social ties

This article analyzes how the category of masculinity is constructed in sports writing. It uses texts on sports that appeared in Gazeta Wyborcza, an opinion-forming Polish newspaper. The number of such articles was calculated, with distinctions between men’s and women’s sports, and the gender of the journalists or experts involved. Qualitative analysis showed which disciplines are presented and in what manner, and how the roles of male and female participants are characterized. It emerges that the media message varies in regard to the type of sport and manner of describing the participants. It is shown that the texts in Gazeta Wyborcza reproduce hegemonic masculinity.

The author analyses the identity strategies appearing in women’s social movements in contemporary Poland. She considers the importance of gender in the process of constructing collective identity and how specific gender identity strategies influence their social reception and, in consequence, the success or failure of women’s initiatives as well. The aim of her considerations is to deepen critical reflection on the category of gender in the intersectional perspective, particularly in the context of research into social movements. The analysis includes two examples of women’s mass movements in the last decade: the movement to restore the Child Support Fund and the Women’s Congress. Her conclusions are based on a qualitative analysis of the media discussion, the self-representations of proponents of both initiatives (in publications and online), as well as interviews with their representatives and participants conducted in the years 2009-2013

The paper aims to critically analyse media discourse on the “Venus” female nude exhibitions, organized annually in Kraków between 1970 and 1991. By analysing discourse that legitimised nudity in the public sphere, the paper sheds light on ways in which attitudes toward sexuality and the body changed during the so-called Gierek decade. The source base consists primarily of press publications, newsreels, and photo books from the 1970s. As the paper demonstrates, there were three dominant frameworks of discussing nudity in state-socialist Poland: artistic, pornographic and educational. Moreover, historical discourse analysis allows us to observe the role female nudes played in setting the stage for the Polish sexual revolution in the second half of the 1980s.

This text contains an analysis of the ways in which men and women engage in selected hospitality practices, including such questions as the feminine transmission of hospitality patterns, the division of responsibilities in preparing for guests, and places for meeting socially (at home and outside the home). On the basis of material gathered by the team of the Archive of Research on Everyday Life, the author finds numerous paradoxes and inconsistencies between women’s beliefs and their behaviors. In attempting a theoretical explanation, reference is made to the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu, Jean-Claude Kaufmann, Harriet Bjerrum Nielsen, and Monica Rudberg. Analysis leads to the conclusion that the multiple and time-consuming responsibilities associated with receiving guests mostly fall to women and thus contribute to their ability to sustain symbolic power over the home space. Consequently, hospitality perpetuates the traditional division into what is public and considered “masculine” and what is private or “feminine.”

In the introduction, the author explains how categories of race and gender are understood in the social sciences. She then presents the world records set in running competitions; these are a departure point for a discussion of perceptions of race and gender and gender and racial differences in sports. The examples, which pertain to playing rules, financial questions and the media discourse, reveal two divergent strategies in the world of sports in regard to gender and racial differences. The first consists in explaining and legitimising differences with the help of the category of biological discourse, the second - based on political correctness - in ignoring them.

The authors analyze selected contemporary Polish academic publications on psychology in order to demonstrate how the concept of gender is constructed in them. They refer to the premises of Kenneth Gergen’s social constructionism, and Ludwik Fleck’s description of connections in common knowledge. In presenting the bases of constructionist ideas, they concentrate on the process of creating knowledge in the social sciences, its interaction with common knowledge, and the significance of gender categories. They also describe the activities that have been undertaken since the 1980s—on the basis of western psychology—to eliminate negative gender stereotypes from scientific and scholarly works. The nature of the errors and shortcomings that could appear at successive stages of the research process forms a departure point for analyzing examples of stereotypical images of men and women in peer-reviewed empirical works published in Poland after 2000. The summary refers to the Polish regulations in regard to the professional ethics of psychologists and in respect to conducting scientific research.

In Western societies, a crisis of multiculturalism has been observed in the last three decades and multicultural policies have been criticized by both the political right and left. The left worries about the liberal values that may be endangered by the beliefs of ethnic minorities, while the right sees ethnic minorities as a threat to national unity and security. Western societies are undergoing a policy crisis as it has come to be felt that some large Muslim minorities do not share Western values and are not loyal to their receiving country. In this study, the feminist perspective is discussed. Feminists argue that a concern for the preservation of cultural diversity should not overshadow the discriminatory nature of some tribal or traditional customs such as forced marriage, honour killing, or female genital mutilation. Currently, feminists and liberals agree that culture should not be used as an excuse for violations of women’s rights byminority groups. It is argued that multicultural policymust be reconsidered, as the clash between minority customs and women’s rights in receivingWestern societies has become evident.
