Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present and analyze selected travel accounts by the Polish emigrant Andrzej Bobkowski (1913–1961). In France, in spite of the ongoing war and then the German occupation, he undertook a number of cycling and sports-tourist expeditions; his phenomenal descriptions of these journeys have become part of the Polish literary canon. Bobkowski called his travels ‘bicycle tours’ and for him they were a form of expression inextricably connected with authentic existence and personal freedom in a world of totalitarianisms. The author employs comparative and the qualitative methods (content analysis) of scholarship.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to analyze the way in which Andrzej Stasiuk portrays the European peripheries in his books. It is also an attempt to answer the question what elements of social reality of Europe (and primarily Central Europe) in the places that Stasiuk visited captured the writer’s imagination and thus significantly contributed to his portrayal of unique characteristics of this part of the world. The article also attempts to answer the question to what extent Stasiuk can be treated as a Central European “local colour” writer, and to what extent he is interested in the peripheral character of these areas and their expulsion from the Western awareness. A key part of the article is an attempt to answer an epistemological question: how can a writer’s observations become useful for social researchers?

Opis:
The subject of the article is the portrayal of poverty in the works of Andrzej Stasiuk, a Polish writer who focuses on Central European themes. Stasiuk’s scope of interest includes former Communist countries of Europe, excluding Germany and Russia, especially in the period of system transformation. Stasiuk’s works offer a literary portrayal of poverty in Central Europe which cannot be equalled with a sociological analysis. The main focus of the article is Stasiuk’s best known non-fiction book about Central European matters entitled On the Road to Babadag (2004). The problems in the article addressed can be divided into two groups. The first one is connected to the imagery of poverty. How is poverty portrayed? What objects or settings are described? Is money mentioned? What are the synonyms of poverty? Whom is Stasiuk describing as “figures of the poor?” Does the writer reflect on the fate of the poor? The second cluster of problems is connected to the function and significance of poverty in the discourse. What is the place of poverty in Stasiuk’s writing and worldview? Why is it necessary? What is the writer’s opinion on poverty as a social phenomenon? Another issue addressed in the article is that of “poverty tourism.”

Opis:
The author disputes Leder’s idea in Prześniona rewolucja. Ćwiczenie z logiki historycznej [A Missed Revolution: Exercise in Historical Logic] (2014) that a great revolution, eliminating the “late feudalism” of the 19th century, occurred in Poland in the years 1939–1956 and that it happened because of the war’s destruction of the old social structures and the Nazi genocide of the Jewish population, that is, the bourgeois class, which was replaced in the years 1945–1956 by unconscious beneficiaries of the change. The beneficiaries were unaware, he writes, because the essence of the changes and their benefits never entered the social imaginary. The core of the author’s polemic is the claim that such change, which was conducted by force and by foreigners, can not be called a “revolution,” that is, the passage of society to modernity. Furthermore, the author claims that the great Polish revolution was conducted in full by the nation, by the peasant classes, in the years 1914–1922, and was popular and independence-oriented in nature. It was the continuation of the Polish independence uprisings of the 19th century, the result of changes in the social structure that had been occurring for years in the Polish lands, which were at the time divided between the partitioning states, and of deepening self-awareness among the people. The revolution was continued after Poland’s acquisition of independence in 1918. The Second World War, and foreign intervention, only disrupted that process.

Opis:
The author investigates epistemic, methodological and ethical challenges coming out of the so-called ethnographic revisit, namely the reexamination of ‘fieldwork’ sites that underwent historical change. She explores one of the most well-known research undertakings in post-1945 Polish social sciences, a study of urban family life styles carried out by a sociologist Andrzej Siciński and his team in the late nineteen seventies. In years 2005–2006 she returned to several families who had been observed and interviewed by Siciński’s group to collect material for her own socio-historical inquiry about experiences of scarcity during and after communist era. Her last visit to Siciński’s interlocutors took place in 2013 with a more general aim to critically engage with intellectual tools (theories, fieldwork instructions and notes) that Siciński’s team employed in the study of ‘ordinary people’. The method of ethnographic revisit can serve as a valuable tool to contextualize and historicize ‘symbolic violence,’ i.e. normative, sociological and political assumptions embedded in everyday language and physical interactions, that inevitably shapes the core and each phase of sociological research. The series of revisits demonstrate the unsolved tension between the practice of sociological cataloguing and a desire to present an individual, comprehensive and historical portrait of ‘Siciński’s families’ as they have undergone the shift from the state-socialism to the neo-liberal economy and society.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to show the evolution of structural divisions within Polish elites from the perspective of changes in Polish-Russian relations after 1989. In order to describe the formation of the Polish space of opinion on the topic, the author interprets the unexpected marginalization of the famous Russian expert Andrzej Drawicz (1939–1997) in the Third Polish Republic. The article contributes to an understanding of the dynamics shaping Polish debates about Russia, and also – by tracing Drawicz’s career trajectory – presents a model of biographical analysis that allows the social dimension to be taken into account.

In the first, the author sets forth the theoretical background and departure point of his analysis. In the second he describes specific components of the lifestyles of the unemployed on the basis of their memoirs. In the third part, he draws conclusions and proposes a classification for the lifestyles of the unemployed in Poland in 1938.
