Opis:
The author disputes Leder’s idea in Prześniona rewolucja. Ćwiczenie z logiki historycznej [A Missed Revolution: Exercise in Historical Logic] (2014) that a great revolution, eliminating the “late feudalism” of the 19th century, occurred in Poland in the years 1939–1956 and that it happened because of the war’s destruction of the old social structures and the Nazi genocide of the Jewish population, that is, the bourgeois class, which was replaced in the years 1945–1956 by unconscious beneficiaries of the change. The beneficiaries were unaware, he writes, because the essence of the changes and their benefits never entered the social imaginary. The core of the author’s polemic is the claim that such change, which was conducted by force and by foreigners, can not be called a “revolution,” that is, the passage of society to modernity. Furthermore, the author claims that the great Polish revolution was conducted in full by the nation, by the peasant classes, in the years 1914–1922, and was popular and independence-oriented in nature. It was the continuation of the Polish independence uprisings of the 19th century, the result of changes in the social structure that had been occurring for years in the Polish lands, which were at the time divided between the partitioning states, and of deepening self-awareness among the people. The revolution was continued after Poland’s acquisition of independence in 1918. The Second World War, and foreign intervention, only disrupted that process.

Opis:
The paper aims to critically analyse media discourse on the “Venus” female nude exhibitions, organized annually in Kraków between 1970 and 1991. By analysing discourse that legitimised nudity in the public sphere, the paper sheds light on ways in which attitudes toward sexuality and the body changed during the so-called Gierek decade. The source base consists primarily of press publications, newsreels, and photo books from the 1970s. As the paper demonstrates, there were three dominant frameworks of discussing nudity in state-socialist Poland: artistic, pornographic and educational. Moreover, historical discourse analysis allows us to observe the role female nudes played in setting the stage for the Polish sexual revolution in the second half of the 1980s.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to analyze the interdependence between the processes of forming mass markets and the processes of rationalizing emotion and the shaping of modern hedonism. The author uses the perspective of Norbert Elias’s process sociology, in which the monopolization of resources results in the growth of dependence between all the inhabitants of the territory encompassed by the monopoly, and this is accompanied by a civilizing process, or the rationalization of the behaviours of individuals. The author presents the idea that the integration process at the level of humanity, as survival unit on the platform of the global market and consumption culture, is ongoing. As an example, the author analyzes the first stage in the consumer revolution in Poland after the Second World War, where fashion was shaped on one side by the socialist ideology of progress, and on the other by the romantic ethic present in communications from the West. Individual emotion as a factor guiding behaviour corresponds to the logic of the market, and fashion is the process of mediating between the market and the individual.

Opis:
An interesting fact in the intellectual history of the fin-de-siecle and first three decades of the 20th century is that the crisis of modernity was understood in categories of sex and gender. In spite of the differences dividing the German intellectual trend of cultural pessimism, the conservative revolution, and Fascist thinking, all these paradigms are linked by the characteristic conviction that ‘modernity’, being the consequence of the French Revolution, was ruled by the ‘feminine principle’. This principle was supposed to represent what is anti-military, anti- -state, and anti-cultural at the same time. Variations on the theory of male bonding (Mannerbund) were the intellectual reaction to that ‘feminine principle’. The intellectual patterns described here find their continuation in contemporary conservative thought.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to analyse Solidarity 1980–1981 as a “revolutionary movement” or “revolution”. These terms were used almost from the beginning, both among the movement’s activists and among researchers in the humanities and social sciences. The phrase “self-limiting revolution”, coined by Jacek Kuroń and popularised by Jadwiga Staniszkis, is often quoted. Some authors link the revolutionary nature of Solidarity with the movement’s non-violent repertoire of contestation, which is expressed in terms of “non-violent revolution”, “peaceful revolution” or “Polish bloodless revolution”. The word “revolution” also appears with an appropriate adjective, emphasising the movement’s class basis or values. In this convention, Solidarity is, for example, a “workers”’ or “republican” revolution. Despite the frequent practice of calling Solidarity a revolution, few researchers have attempted to substantiate the “revolutionary” nature of the movement. Most of them have ignored the long tradition of theoretical reflection on revolution within historical sociology in this context. The author reviews the literature in which Solidarity is treated as a revolution. He points out the main ways of defining revolution and the sine qua non features of this phenomenon. He argues that the use of the term “revolution” in reference to Solidarity is a misuse and is not justified in the light of the theory of revolution.

Opis:
The author shows that the 2014 Revolution of Dignity brought not only revolution-ary political and social changes, but also revealed the consequences of processes thathad begun earlier. Society has a largely post-migration nature, shaped as a result of there settling of people from various republics within the borders of the USSR in the years 1944–1991. The author believes that the state’s identity policy after 1991 was inconsis-tent on the one hand, and on the other, was based primarily on the ethnic (linguistic)concept of the Ukrainian nation. In effect, the state did not create an attractive prospect of allegiance to the nation for its inhabitants originating from Russian-speaking im-migration communities, but rather the opposite—it furthered their alienation. These errors of the authorities were one of the sources of the opposition of the people of the Crimea and Donbass in 2014 in regard to the country’s post-revolutionary authori-ties. The author nevertheless notices an important change in identification in Ukraine, occurring systematically after 1991 and connected with the growing to adulthood of a young generation educated under the influence of the national narrative in school. In the author’s opinion, this determined the victory of the Revolution of Dignity.

Opis:
The subject of this text is integration with the West in Ukrainian public debate in the period between the Orange Revolution and the Euromaidan (2004–2014). The author suggests that the gradual shift in public opinion after 2006, from an EU orientation toward Ukraine’s integration with the Eurasian Customs Union (since 2014 the Eurasian Union, the EAU), was connected with the passivity of pro-Western intellectuals. Having allowed themselves to be pushed out of the newspapers and national television channels, which belong to oligarchs, they found a communications niche in new media forums, where contact with the public is much more limited in terms of numbers. The author also points out the manipulation of public opinion by state services during Janukovych’s presidency for the purpose of marginalizing the national-democratic camp. The author analyzes the changes in opinions expressed by Jurii Andruchovych: from articulating openness to the European project and a civil concept of the Ukrainian nation, through doubting in the possibility of integration with the EU, to accenting the ethnic qualities of Ukrainianness and an elite exclusiveness. In the author’s opinion, another cause of the lack of stability in public opinion on EU integration was EU policy, which was devoid of a long-term strategy in regard to Ukraine.

Opis:
Polish media has played an active role in the policy towards Ukraine, particularly from the outbreak of the Revolution of Dignity and war with Russia, but this subject has not received in-depth academic treatment. The author describes the discourse of Polish mass media on the subject of Ukraine, using selected television stations and  newspapers as examples. The most important television stations (TVP, TVN, Polsat) do not present a  uniform image of Ukraine, and their discourse is in a large part reactive, in connection with current events. The situation is slightly different in the case of the print media. Three different types of discourse can be distinguished. The weekly Do Rzeczy continues the political tradition of Józef Piłsudski. It displays considerable interest in the former eastern borderlands and is distrustful towards Russia. The weekly Przegląd refers indirectly to the traditions of national democracy and the political realists of the People’s Republic of Poland period, being critical of Ukraine and pointing out the importance of relations with Russia. Gazeta Wyborcza has in large measure inherited the ideas of Jerzy Giedroyc. It emphasizes the need for reconciliation with Ukraine and for supporting it in its democratic and pro-European strivings.

Opis:
Recent years have witnessed the publication of a number of research papers and books seeking to assess threats of electoral victories of anti-establishment politicians and political parties, described as authoritarian populists. This essay focuses on three books directly addressing the origins and threats of authoritarian populism to democracy. It consists of six sections and the conclusion. The first section presents findings (Norris and Inglehart) based on surveys of values of voters of various age cohorts concluding that authoritarian populism is a temporary backlash provoked by the post-materialist perspective. The second section examines the contention, spelled out in Levitsky and Ziblatt, that increase in openness of American political system produced,  unintentionally, a degradation of the American political system. The third section continues brief presentations focusing on to the causes and implications of “illiberal democracy,” and “undemocratic liberalism” (Mounk). The fourth section examines developments in the quality of democracy in the world showing that despite the decline in Democracy Indices, overall there was no slide towards non-democratic forms of government in 2006–2019. The next two sections deal with dimensions missing in reviewed books; the notion of nation-state, international environment, civic culture and, in particular, dangers of radical egalitarianism to democracy. The last section concludes with regrets that the authors ignored rich literature on fragility of democracy and failed to incorporate in their analyses deeper structural factors eroding democracy: by the same token, return to the pre-populist shock trajectory is unlikely to assure survival of liberal democracy.

Opis:
This article is devoted to the construction of the concept of the “hero” and of “heroism.” In contrast to the majority of Western works on societies that did not experience direct mass war actions during the Second World War and, in the opinion of some scholars, have entered the “post-heroic era,” the author concentrates on Ukrainian society, which since 2014 finds itself in a state of political, social, and military conflict in connection with the mass protests in the winter of 2013–2014, Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014, and the ongoing war with separatists in two eastern regions of the country. The author’s main aim is to analyze the process of the social construction of a hero in conflict conditions. While making use of the examples of activities serving to make heroes of the participants of the Revolution of Dignity and the war in Donbass, the author presents (1) the means of socially creating important meanings and stories about the “new Ukrainian heroes,” (2) the entities taking part in that process, and (3) the function of commemorating heroes in a society experiencing war.The author claims that the armed conflict in Ukraine, which in a brief space of time produced thousands of victims, resulted in the crystallization of national borders and of the political community, with its consolidation in the face of a common enemy. She presents the role of “new heroes” in these processes.
