    Opis:
    The article addresses a source rarely used by social researchers, namely the inscriptions on wayside crosses in rural settings. Crosses erected “in memory of” preserve social memory and forestall the natural process of oblivion. These inscriptions are the products of social reflection, and express collective representations and the collective opinion of the community. One can deduce the values most important to the community, and those most endangered, from the wording imprinted on the crosses. The preserved inscriptions are all the more valuable as a state of collective consciousness in rural communities has yet to be constructed on the basis of individual testimonies in the form of letters or diaries. The inscriptions on crosses in an area of the Lublin voivodeship, enriched with information gathered regarding the local context, constitute the article’s empirical basis.

    This article looks on Jedwabne and the debate on Polish involvement in the Holocaust from the perspective of the Jedwabians. The author shows that until the erection of the national monument to the murdered Jews in Jedwabne in 2001, the Jedwabians’ memory of their Jewish neighbours was a part of local memory. Jedwabians commemorated the Jews in accordance with their frames of memory. The point is that the people in Jedwabne are first of all a members of parish community, so their memory is religious in nature. This has a profound effect on their relationship to the past and their perception of the role of monuments and memorials. By reconstructing the history of the erection of selected monuments in Jedwabne, the author shows which events of the past Jedwabians want to commemorate and what social function is played by memory of the commemorated events. She also considers to what degree memory of the group’s past lies at the base of the Jedwabians’ contemporary identity.

    The author suggests that research into the socially constructed collective past should be expanded to include motifs of social memory that are negotiated in private discourse and emerge intersubjectively (often unconsciously) at the level of everyday life. She considers the relation between places of memory and memory of places, and between social memory and individual memory. The article is based on empirical material from the reminiscences of Wrocław inhabitants published in the book [Wrocław: I Remember… Wrocław. Pamiętam, że…], which was prepared in connection with Wrocław’s role as European Capital of Culture 2016.

    For sociologically oriented research into memory, the finding of connections between cultural mechanisms of constructing the past and their socio-structural effects is important. In this context, a principle linking phenomena of memory, culture, and social structure should be of use. This article is devoted to Yuri Lotman’s concept of the semiotic memory of culture, which the author believes could serve as a generative rule for this type of research in the sociology of culture. In the case of studies on social memory, Lotman’s concept constitutes a methodological bridge between phenomena of social memory and the transmission of culture, enabling the question of how the memory of the individual participates in collective memory to be answered.

    This article concerns the archival enterprise at the Grodzka Gate-NN Theater Center in Lublin [Ośrodek „Brama Grodzka - Teatr NN”; http://teatrnn.pl] and those aspects of its operation that are connected with the artistic processing of the idea of an archive as a “memory ark.” The author discusses key elements of the archive’s form and function in connection with the Center’s social and educational activities, showing their relation to questions of cultural memory, memory as responsibility, the social dimension of memory, and ethical and artistic aspects of remembering (especially the remembrance and non-remembrance of victims of the Shoah).The article also reviews those works of the Center in which the form and function of the archive are translated into various realizations of “memory theater” (including “behind-the-scenes theater” inspired by the form of the archive, mysteries of memory, the expanded digital archive and its network infrastructure oriented on “memory work”, etc.)

    This article concerns the changes that have been occurring in Poles’ collective memory not only in regard to historical policy but also in regard to spontaneous social activeness. The author’s empirical basis was formed by interviews with the organizers and participants of protests against plans to change the name of a street [ul. Dąbrowszczaków], and of other activities in the years 2016–2019 aimed at popularizing the history of. The problem is presented in the context of the debate among historians, publicists, and politicians of right-wing and left-liberal circles over the historical policy. The author interprets attempts to remove the civil war volunteers from the public sphere in Poland as part of a broader historical policy aimed at achieving cultural hegemony over Poles’ social memory and identity. He analyzes the protests in defense of this volunteers primarily in the context of the generational changes that have enabled the appearance of a new, leftist “memory actor.”

    This essay contains reflections on the role of war in European history and on contemporary Europeans’ awareness of the wars currently underway. In the historical part of the text, the author refers to the classic justification of the creation of a state as an alternative to war. The author recalls the conflicts and destruction in Europe to the end of the nineteenth century – an era in which war theoreticians and national leaders treated war as an acceptable tool for obtaining political aims. Then the author presents the world wars of the twentieth century as a threat to the existence of Europe and the process of building – in this century and with the large participation of Europeans – an international system to prevent conflicts. In the part referring to contemporary times, the author claims that in Europe wars are perceived almost exclusively as “local” conflicts, occurring far from European borders. Europeans are little aware of the fact that the sources of the wars in the Middle East and Africa are today global in nature and could affect Europeans themselves. The reluctance to admit these facts appears to be greatest in Poland and its neighboring countries in East Central Europe, where the attention of governments, public opinion, and even academics, is focused on the region’s twentieth-century wars.

    The research material included about 300 episodes from 30 published sources. A targeted selection was made according to a combination of three criteria: a diversity of social positions among the authors, the biographies of the authors, and the detail of description. An analysis of the material was conducted in order to contribute to a better understanding of the social significance of hospitality. Theoretical assumptions about hospitality in conditions of stability and social crisis were advanced. The analysis showed that in times of relative stability, hospitality was biographically important when it allowed a person to transition between positions in the social structure (usually between close levels) and involved some form of promotion. On the other hand, in conditions of intensified change and crises, the order was disturbed: on the one hand, visits to the homes of persons occupying more distant positions in the hierarchy (both up and down the social ladder) became more common, but on the other hand, there could be a challenge to or rejection of traditional requirements of hospitality. The first situation occurs especially at the beginning of a crisis, and with the depletion of resources, the increase in the number of negative experiences, and socialization to a long-term threat, a survival strategy begins to take shape in which only the closest circles prevail. Such findings suggest that a more cautious look should be taken at both the theoretical concepts in which hospitality is considered a useful social invention especially in times of increased need and at the Polish self-stereotype as a nation with a culture based on hospitality, invariable generosity, and an inclination to selflessness.
