    This text presents the origin and functioning of the Everyday Life Research Archive [Archiwum Badań nad Życiem Codziennym; www.archiwum.edu.pl]. An initiative originating in Poznań, the archive collects, processes, and makes accessible all types of materials concerning research into daily life in Poland from the prewar period to contemporary times. An important aspect of the undertaking is the stimulation of new research and the preparation of works on the subject of the sociology of everyday life.

    Opis:
    The aim of this article is to show the socio-cultural ambivalence of databases. On the one hand, they are perceived as impersonal technological representations providing their users with objective information. On the other, they are the result of intentional human action, were created in a specific context, and serve the realization of some purpose defined by their creators. The metaphor that arises from this duality is that of a mirror—reflecting the image of the world, but at the same time deforming it in various manners. The author presents the three main aspects of databases’ ambivalence. The first is the question of selecting the material for the database: the material’s ostensible objectivity and the subjective nature of the choice. The second is the question of the exhibition of cultural content within the framework of the database: the tension between an ideologically neutral presentation of the world and the strategy of exhibition. The third subject raised is the use of databases: full access for users, a framework imposed by the creators, or somewhere in between.

    The text contains information about The Voices of the 20th Century Archive and Research Group, a department created in 2009 in the Institute of Sociology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The archive is a collection of data from historical—and sometimes forgotten—qualitative research. The Group attempts to complete the information and protect it from destruction. For example, in regard to research into labourers’ life styles in the 1970s, the author shows how difficult it is after years to create a cohesive whole from the scattered materials. She likens the task to putting together a puzzle. She points to the possible advantages of reusing the material, as well as the limitations a contemporary researcher encounters in attempting to make sense of it.

    Opis:
    This article was written on the basis of the project ‘See Culture: The Archive of Visual Materials from Research into Culture in Poland’ conducted in 2014. It speaks of the internet creation of a social database using visual materials—the Visual Archive (archiwumwizualne.pl). The authors present their findings from interviews with members of the research teams and directors of the projects that were included in the internet archive. These primarily concern the various approaches and research practices of the interlocutors and their definitions of visual material’s potential as a tool in social research. The profiles of the researchers presented earlier is then compared to the category of the practice-oriented intellectual, which broadens the classical understanding of the intellectual and points to an emerging manner of thinking about research practice in contemporary social sciences. The usefulness of the Visual Archive for the practice-oriented intellectual is indicated.

    This text concerns work connected with the organization of the Oral History Archive of Cieszyn Silesia [Archiwum Historii Mówionej Śląska Cieszyńskiego], an initiative combining academic research interests with the activism of the non-governmental sector. The archivization projects showcase the culture of Cieszyn Silesia on both sides of the national border dividing the region; they highlight the cultural pluralism of the past and the multi-faith nature of contemporary times. They also value women’s voices. The methodology of the projects consists in filming narrative interviews addressing important issues agreed upon by the research collective. Two films of oral history were produced on the basis of the material acquired.     This text contains information about the Qualitative Data Archive at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology PAS (QDA) [Archiwum Danych Jakościowych przy IFiS PAN - ADJ; adj.ifispan.pl], which collects and digitalizes databases from a broad range of research in the social sciences and makes them accessible online. The archive was established with the idea of preserving material of a qualitative nature. There were two main aims: to initiate new methods of research using the collected resources and to stimulate theoretical and methodological reflection on the idea of archivization, renewed analysis of data, and various other forms of revisiting research. The creators of the archive have managed to save and digitalize considerable amounts of material derived from studies that are by now historical and are important for Polish sociology and anthropology. The Qualitative Data Archive also contains collections of materials from quite recent studies, which have often been processed in electronic form. For these, the QDA functions as a platform where researchers can present their analyses and findings more widely and in a secure form both for themselves and for their respondents.
