    This is a chapter of a book containing the results of a study entitled ‘Old and New Forms of Poverty—The Lifestyles of Poor Families,’ which was conducted under the direction of Elżbieta Tarkowska in the second half of the 1990s. The author presents the social world of poor people in Poland, and two of its aspects in particular: the limitation of interhuman contacts to the family circle, and the role of institutions such as parishes, schools, and especially social support, in resolving the ongoing problems of daily life. Social policy, as reconstructed from the statements of people living in poverty, is oriented toward temporary activities and not toward shaping aspirations and behaviors, and yet the sole method of overcoming the apathy and helplessness accompanying long-term poverty is to arouse aspirations in the sphere of education.

    This paper discusses the ongoing evolution of research into poverty, with the profound and thorough reformulation of the researcher–respondent relationship, which has blurred the distinction between the researcher and research subject. The researcher–respondent roles have merged, turning the research subject into the agent and respondents into researchers inquiring into their own conditions. This process has evolved through the first British ‘second-hand’ inquiries into poverty, analyses of personal documents (diaries), oral history traditions, the family histories presented by Oscar Lewis, personal accounts, monographs of communities, and recent participatory approaches to poverty research such as the ‘Poverty First Hand’ project.

    The aim of the article is an analysis of the theme of poverty as one of key concepts in the work of Ryszard Kapuściński. The article offers an overview of Kapuściński’s poverty discourse, which relied on a broad, multi-dimensional concept of poverty. In Kapuściński’s work there was room for both cultural and subjective dimensions, for an idea of a polarized world divided between the rich and the poor, for an exploration of cultures of poverty and consumerism, and also for taking into account the modern context of globalization, increasing consumerism, and influence of the media on the marginalization of the poverty issue in the public debate. The final theme is Kapuściński’s identification with the poor and their lives, which in his view was a necessary requirement for being a reporter/journalist.

    The subject of the article is the portrayal of poverty in the works of Andrzej Stasiuk, a Polish writer who focuses on Central European themes. Stasiuk’s scope of interest includes former Communist countries of Europe, excluding Germany and Russia, especially in the period of system transformation. Stasiuk’s works offer a literary portrayal of poverty in Central Europe which cannot be equalled with a sociological analysis. The main focus of the article is Stasiuk’s best known non-fiction book about Central European matters entitled On the Road to Babadag (2004). The problems in the article addressed can be divided into two groups. The first one is connected to the imagery of poverty. How is poverty portrayed? What objects or settings are described? Is money mentioned? What are the synonyms of poverty? Whom is Stasiuk describing as “figures of the poor?” Does the writer reflect on the fate of the poor? The second cluster of problems is connected to the function and significance of poverty in the discourse. What is the place of poverty in Stasiuk’s writing and worldview? Why is it necessary? What is the writer’s opinion on poverty as a social phenomenon? Another issue addressed in the article is that of “poverty tourism.”

    The article analyzes different meanings of poverty and wealth as seen in the Belarusian and Polish proverbs. Based on the thematic-rhematic analysis of the proverbs, the author presents many similarities in the everyday thinking of Polish and Belarusian societies. The key similarities are the beliefs in the dichotomic structure of a society (the poor and rich), positive characteristics of a poor man (e.g. honesty, hard work) and negative features of a rich man (e.g. greed, stinginess, laziness). Such similarities result from the fact that Poland and Belarus are neighbouring countries with similar historical and cultural traditions.

    Fashion embodies the paradoxes of the contemporary world; its relations with poverty have been fairly perplexing for a long time. The author considers haute couture’s romance with the aesthetics of poverty since the emergence ofmodern capitalist society. She devotes particular attention to the period at the turn of the 20th to 21st centuries, when major social, economic, and cultural transformations brought changes to the fashion world. The first aim of the article is to show fashion’s aesthetic revolution, which was initiated by avant-garde designers in the 1980s and 1990s. Its second is to describe the structural changes that led to a blurring of categories in the fashion system over the past two decades. And its final, most important aim is to present fashion’s popular aesthetic of poverty and to interpret the significance of ‘poor chic’ in contemporary post-industrial society.

    This article is devoted to the relational-symbolic dimension of contemporary poverty, which is personified today in homo sacer, that is, the excluded person. Relations between the world of wealth and the world of poverty are dominated by contempt, rejection, and a sense of alienation. The result is the perpetuation of social inequalities and problems of identity in increasingly numerous spheres of impoverished people. These are challenges that contemporary society must meet. Science and public discourse are thus concentrating less on describing the symptoms of the problem and more on what excluded people themselves think and feel. Researchers are trying to hear the voices of the poor; qualitative research and analyses of memoir materials are useful to this end. In turning to such sources, the author presents the viewpoint of poor people, their feelings and subjective appraisal of their situation, and their strategies for dealing with poverty.

    The article offers an attempt to analyse poverty in terms of a narrowly defined social problem - a phenomenon which is dysfunctional for the social system (e.g. because of its scope, the danger of permanence, and negative implications). This problem can become a subject of interest for sociologists, other professionals who are engaged in attempts to assuage poverty, and members of communities where it occurs. The article moves from theoretical considerations to an analysis of poverty in today’s Poland. Based on results of a research conducted among social care recipients in the Lubuskie Province, the article poses a question: whose problem is poverty? Is it the problem of the poor themselves or of the professionals that try to fight it? In an attempt to answer the question, it offers a typology of social care recipients, based on an analysis of their activities and on their own attempts to interpret their situation.

    The author considers unemployment in Poland in the first years of the twenty-first century as a cause of the growth in poverty and the ensuing social exclusion. These phenomena are connected but not identical. They are also defined differently. In contrast to various conceptions of poverty that seek its causes in the values and behaviors of individuals, the category of social exclusion stresses the social dimension—the impacts of a society that excludes and marginalizes. The author writes about the meaning of work in Polish society and gives examples of unemployed people’s feelings in connection with not having work, drawn from their own writings. She would like to see these viewpoints taken into consideration in sociological research.

    The article offers an overview of literature on the subject (including sociological texts dealing with the concept of the welfare stigma), and also presents the author’s own reflections, referring to the problem of stigmatization and social exclusion of the poor. The article analyses concepts that explain the stigmatizing and humiliating impact of poverty such as: (i) Othering (treating someone as the Other); (ii) povertyism; and finally (iii) the welfare stigma. Theoretical analyses are supplemented by the results of the author’s own qualitative research on stigmatization of female social care recipients, which shed light on the rarely analyzed relative and symbolic aspects of poverty, such as shame, humiliation, feeling of exclusion, lower self-esteem, feeling of uselessness and lack of control over one’s life. This approach, hitherto rarely applied in Polish sociology, offers promising explanatory possibilities.

    The author reflects on time in contemporary culture—on changes in the experience and perception of time, and also on how temporal categories are used in analyses of social and cultural issues. She points out (1) new phenomena connected with the temporal regulation of collective life, and (2) new divisions and social differentiations in which a major role is played by the time dimension. The distribution of time and the manner of valuing time is changing, as is free time. The disappearance of calendars and extension of the present is accompanied by an excess of activities and lack of time in the world of wealth, and a simultaneous excess of time in the world of poverty and marginalization. These are traits of contemporaneity. An ‘unequal distribution of time’ appears in a ‘society of varying rhythms.’ Such phenomena are visible in Poland as well.

    The analyses and conclusions presented in the article are based on the results of qualitative panel surveys conducted among large indigent families in the years 2013 to 2014 and in 2017. The survey attempted to answer the questions of whether and to what extent the implementation of a pro-family policy in Poland in 2016 influenced the situation of large families receiving institutional social aid. On what do these families spend the payments received from the Family 500+ programme? Has their new economic situation favoured their activation or increased their ability to manage? Could the programme, in consequence, hinder or limit the intergenerational transmission of poverty? The author concludes that in fact the effects of financing large families differ from those that were intended. The programme, which was intended to be pro-natal, has acquired the nature of social aid payments. It has improved the material situation of many families, but it has not sufficiently contributed to changing ways of thinking about the children’s futures, which would contribute to limiting the processes of inheriting poverty.
