    The primary aim of this article is to present the potential and functions of mobile applications dedicated to the blind and visually impaired. There is no doubt that despite their enormous intellectual abilities, people with visual impairments have limited perspectives in the reception of visual culture. Dedicated smartphone applications give them a chance for greater independence in everyday activities. The paper starts with a short introduction about the place of mobile devices and applications in contemporary culture. Next, it moves on to discussing the main concepts of the works by Marshall McLuhan and Derrick de Kerckhove, highlighting the importance of tactile aspects and the eye-ear axis (critical for interfaces adopted in mobile technologies). The next section focuses on the functions of accessibility and usability of these tools in terms of their implementation. The most important design principles are presented and analysed (including the use of the compact and simple information architecture, clear visual elements, intuitive programmes, and the dark mode). The final section presents examples of mobile applications based on algorithms that recognise and describe selected aspects of reality, allow users to make sound and visual recordings, and use geolocation to create ‘auditory fields of view’.

    Współczesna kultura jest zdominowana przez wizualność. Codziennie przed naszymi oczami przewijają się dziesiątki reklam, billboardów, memów i filmów. Wielu z nas do tej puli dorzuca swoje fotografie, rysunki, kolaże, publikowane zwłaszcza w mediach społecznościowych. Zanurzeni w tym oceanie obrazów rzadko zastanawiamy się nad tym, że tak zorientowana kultura może być wykluczająca dla osób z dysfunkcjami wzroku. Problem ten staje się szczególnie palący, gdy uświadomimy sobie, że osoby niewidome i słabowidzące jedynie w bardzo niewielkim stopniu mogą uczestniczyć w wystawach, spektaklach czy projekcjach filmowych, a ich obecność w muzeach, teatrach i kinach wciąż budzi zdumienie i wątpliwość co do sensowności. Aldo Grassini, twórca Museo Omero z założenia przeznaczonego przede wszystkim dla osób niewidomych, podkreśla, że dostępność kultury dla niepełnosprawnych powinna być rozpatrywana nie tylko jako poważny problem społeczny, ale także istotny czynnik terapeutyczny i sposób na pełniejsze integrowanie się tych osób ze społeczeństwem. W polskich placówkach kulturalnych podejmuje się wprawdzie wysiłki zmierzające do uznania niewidomych za pełnoprawnych uczestników organizowanych wydarzeń, jednak działania te natrafiają na problemy finansowe, techniczne i psychologiczne. W numerze zaprezentowane zostaną zatem rozmaite sposoby włączania osób z dysfunkcjami wzroku w obieg kultury wizualnej.
    Contemporary culture is dominated by visuality. Dozens of ads, billboards, memes and videos flash before our eyes every day. Many of us contribute to this pool with own photos, drawings and collages published mostly in social media. Immersed in this ocean of images, we hardly ever reflect on the fact that visually impaired people can be excluded from this culture. It is a particularly pressing problem once we realise that people with low vision can participate in exhibitions, performances and film screenings only to a very limited extent, while their presence in museums, theatres and cinemas tends to evoke astonishment and doubts as to its purpose. Aldo Grassini, the founder of the Museo Omero dedicated primarily to the non-sighted, argues that the accessibility of culture for people with disabilities should be considered not only as a serious social problem but also an important factor in their therapy and social integration. While Polish cultural institutions take the effort to fully accommodate their events for the visually impaired, they often face financial, technical and psychological problems. Therefore, in this issue we present various ways of including visually impaired people in visual culture.

    Street art is part of everyday life in many towns and cities whose daily reality is becoming increasingly richer, more ambiguous, and more meaningful. Murals, graffiti, sticker art, and other forms of street art play the city-forming role. They help to accommodate spaces, make them unique and meaningful, and, which is extremely symptomatic, add beauty and an artistic value to them. Street art is discussed and experienced; it defines the framework of social life while developing people’s imagination and languages. Nearly everyone can benefit from this form of art – ‘nearly everyone’, as it is typically inaccessible to people with visual impairments. The aim of this article is to study possible interactions between the latter and street art. The text seeks to define the effort invested in making murals, graffiti, and sticker art accessible to the visually impaired. It tries to estimate the number of such projects, explore how audio description (AD) is used to ensure accessibility, and analyse selected AD descriptions. It focuses primarily on the denotative and poetic functions of AD narratives as the most important determinants for the inclusion of the visually impaired in the geography of towns and cities, their aesthetics, uniqueness, and art.

    The successively introduced legal regulations as well as social changes make it possible for people with visual impairments to live a more independent life, which also includes participation in culture. As a result, a reflection arises: What can be done to ensure better access to museums and their resources to people with visual impairments? POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews has developed a programme and implemented a series of activities that allow diverse groups of visitors to get to know its exhibitions and participate in events. Among solutions dedicated to the visually impaired one will find typhlographs and audio descriptions for the exhibits as well as educational walks and workshops with employees trained to work with visitors with disabilities and adapt the museum space to let them move around it independently. This article focuses on activities that engage people with visual impairments – a population that faces the greatest barriers in terms of access to visual arts, who, however, is being increasingly included in visual arts events. Such activities give the visually impaired the opportunity to participate in situations previously inaccessible to them, breaking down barriers between different social groups.

    Dissemination of art online is nowadays a global practice adopted by many museums and galleries. While the reasons behind it may be diverse, one of them is to provide access to works of art and art spaces to people with disabilities. The article analyzes the legitimacy of using modern technologies in communication with people with disabilities, and presents examples of solutions implemented in Polish social and cultural reality in order to make art accessible to people with disabilities. It also identifies opportunities and threats that may arise in connection with such communication model between cultural institutions and people with disabilities.

    This article ponders on the accessibility of art for people with visual impairments. Using the example of Fundacja Wielozmysły (Multi-Sense Foundation), it shows how the visually impaired can be included in the reception and creation of visual culture. The text presents various forms of making art accessible and translating the language of the visual into other senses. It highlights the potential of artistic mediation in the process of sharing and creating events accessible to people with visual impairments and those with regular vision. Accessibility is defined as creating common spaces and searching for places and situations where people with disabilities can participate in the cultural and social life on par with others. The authors of the article refer to disability studies and argue that as long as disability is perceived in a stereotypical manner accessibility cannot exist. They conclude that accessibility can be beneficial for everyone, regardless of disability, and may become a new, democratic form of experiencing art. For people with disabilities, accessibility will be a process that enables them to study visual culture and its products. For others, it may serve as a new form of contact with art.

    In its analysis of visual culture accessibility for people with vision loss, this article refers to the basic types of visual impairments while highlighting the diversity of the groups and needs of the blind and visually impaired. Philosophical metaphors of statues and buckets are used to depict the cognitive situation of people with visual impairments. Seeking to capture the theoretical nature of the blind subject, the paper does not devalue their vision loss but shows that their aesthetic experience may be as valuable as that of a person without such impairment. The next section offers an overview of selected cultural events and good artistic practices in terms of visual culture accessibility, with a particular focus on the exhibition Choroba jako źródło sztuki (Illness as a Source of Art), held at the National Museum in Poznań in 2019. The problem of visual impairment in visual culture is discussed from several perspectives: that of a blind observer, a blind artist, and blind society (mind-blindness).

    This article discusses possibilities arising in the reception of visual arts by the visually impaired from the perspective of a cognitive psychologist and an educator working in a gallery of contemporary art. It turns out that sight is not critical for learning about art. When including people with visual impairments in this area of human life, it is best to start with contemporary art – partly because works of contemporary artists frequently engage multiple senses. The authors also address the issue of art adaptation and present challenges and solutions in the process of adapting works of art to the needs of people with visual impairments. The latter are a highly diversified group with different histories and degrees of vision loss, as well as personalities and intelligence. As a result, educators must consider the cognitive abilities and limitations of the visually impaired art users to ensure effective communication and access to works of art. The development of inclusive communication requires systematic work with such people and with specialists in various fields, particularly psychologists and typhlo-pedagogues. Their cooperation may contribute to a greater understanding of the world of art by people with visual impairments, while improving their social competences and visual literacy.

    This article describes the history of Museo Statale Tattile Omero (‘Homer’ State Tactile Museum) in Ancona, Italy. Its founder and current director presents the concept of the institution, focusing on the role of touch as a sense that enables contact with art not only to people with visual impairments but also those with regular vision. It creates new perspectives in the process of learning about the works of renowned masters, both ancient and contemporary. The collection of the ‘Homer’ museum is divided into sections devoted to architecture, ancient sculpture, contemporary artists, and facial expressions. All objects can be touched by visitors. The author of the article also highlights the extremely important social and culture-forming role of the museum. Throughout the nearly 30 years of its existence, it has not only set the accessibility standards in Italy, but also served as a model for many cultural institutions around the world.
