Opis:
The past decades have seen a considerable, albeit uneven, outflow of young population from rural areas, with significantly more women migrating than men. Women that stay, tend to do it on their own terms, refusing to follow in the footsteps of their overworked mothers. Contemporary women who decide to live in the countryside often negotiate their rights and the division of responsibilities with their future husbands before marriage, and then enforce the effective implementation of the agreement. This article outlines the historical background of women’s work in the countryside, seeking to explain the origins, reasons, and consequences of the current dramatic shift in the situation of rural women. Based on studies conducted since the early 21st century in Poland’s region of Podlasie, the author describes changes in the social position of rural women in this area, both in terms of their role in the family and outside, i.e. in the professional and social life. The paper shows how women managed to rise from the status of a largely oppressed group to a frequently more privileged position than that of men.

In modern humanities Narcissus, or a narcissist, has become an all-encompassing term that is to warn us against the idle knowledge of oneself and isolation of the individual. Derived from psychology, sociology and poststructuralism, this diagnosis has provided the basis for a common criticism of the Similar and repetition of the Same, while paradoxically favouring the articulation of the source of endless chains of mimetic reflections and behavioural patterns: the original and unique Narcissus elevated to the status of an individual perfectly abstracted from the cultural context. Doesn’t therefore the myth of Narcissus warn against itself? Isn’t the self-reflective antinarcissism of modern humanities becoming what it seeks to criticise? This discourse may undermine the importance of deep mechanisms of culture whose message and preservation rely primarily on repetition and regularity. The article offers an overview of selected proposals that criticise various types of cultural narcissism. It outlines the structure of this phenomenon, taking into account the research proposals of Claude Lévi-Strauss. Analysing narcissism as a modern form of mediation between the subject and the world, the authors try to determine what tools a contemporary narcissist uses to see his or her reflection, what dangerous ontological boundaries are crossed in the process, and consequently, which reflection eventually becomes a reality that he or she presents to others. While the ‘culture of narcissism’ – in psychosocial terms – places the individual at the centre, cultural narcissism seems to consider a community as a reservoir of codes and therefore the primary content.

In his essay The Task of the Translator, Walter Benjamin compared literary translation to fragments of a broken vessel that need to be put together. Applying Benjamin’s metaphor to the world of dance, this article proposes to look at the practice of the Japanese classical dance as a translation process that occurs at the level of the body. Kirsten Hastrup’s anthropology of experience is proposed as the methodological perspective. Basing on her own body and many years of personal experience with nihon buyō as the field of her ethnographic research, the author reflects on her dual role of a dancer and a researcher, and her double – half-Japanese and half-Polish – identity. Reconstructing her experience of learning the dance, primarily the mistakes she made at the early stage, she looks into the process of transforming the body. With the dance recognised as a kind of a language, she proposes to approach it and its practice like a form of reading. Through a detailed analysis of different positions of the body and putting the body in motion, she searches for the possible ways to understand the dance and its translation. While doing so, she highlights this long-term process as a prerequisite for such a translation to occur.

The paper presents a study of the category of hypersensitivity based on Polish parenting websites and a discourse on children and child rearing. Using discourse analysis methods and findings from new childhood studies, the author explores the current aporias regarding sensitivity. She analyses social narratives entailed in them, including those concerning child education and upbringing, related to modern biopolitics and various risk discourses according to which the responsibility for the proper control and development of the child’s sensitivity lies within the parent-expert. Based on the studied material, a thesis is formed that connects the discourse on hypersensitivity with modern, also neoliberal, thinking, pointing to the post-moralistic implications of this relationship – possible outcomes of treating child development as a strictly individualistic process. The article also shows mechanisms of depriving children of subjectivity through discursive child management, in which the child is no longer a person and becomes merely a representative of certain characteristics of a specific group of population recognized as hypersensitive.

Opis:
Rock is an important part of culture. Song studies, a subdiscipline of sound studies and an interesting context in contemporary humanities, have sought to enter the Polish discourse of cultural science for some time now. The anthropology of rock is a topic still in need of studying. Polish research in this respect is rather modest compared to other parts of the world, particularly the English speaking countries, where reflection on rock has been popular for many years. In Poland, its origins date back to 2009 when the first nationwide conference ‘Unisono na pomieszane języki’ [Language mix in unison], organised by Radosław Marcinkiewicz, took place in Tułowice near Opole. Eleven editions of the conference have been held so far – since the third session under the motto ‘Unisono w wielogłosie’ [Polyphony in unison]. Six volumes of the conference materials have been published (2010–2014, 2019). Their significance results not only from the fact that they are the first series of such studies in Poland but also that they have laid the foundations for Polish rock music studies. A few years earlier, in 2003, A po co nam rock? Między duszą a ciałem [What do we need rock for? Between soul and body], edited by Wojciech Burszta and Marcin Rychlewski, came out as the first multi-authored monograph on the topic. This shows that rock anthropology research is a relatively young discipline in Poland – not even 18 years old yet. In this issue we will focus on studies by Polish researchers. Ten years before the release of A po co nam rock?, Wojciech Siwak published his pioneering work, Estetyka rocka [The aesthetics of rock] (1993). The last decade (2009–2019) has seen a real flood of works on rock culture.

Photography emerging from the documentary tradition has continued to evolve over the recent years, nearing the scientific practices applied in the study of the social and community-based dimensions of culture. Photographers conduct experiments in the social space, reflect on the interactions and dependencies that they intentionally create, and construct languages of communication subordinated to the interpersonal relationships in which they operate. As authors of their art-based research, they are in charge of both methodology of analysis (by adapting the tools employed by the humanities and social sciences) and the ways in which their results are presented and included in the social mainstream as artistic interventions, collective practices, and photography publications. Given that the latter are the subject of this article, it focuses on three selected publications and identifies engagement as a central category for methods used by artists to establish a relationship with the studied social reality, influence it, and create knowledge about it. Engagement, in both its versions – as an attempt to have an impact on the studied social reality and as a method of intentional relationship building within a community, carries a significant learning potential, allowing us to look anew at the role of photography in qualitative social research.

Three collections of photographs depicting ethnographical research are subject of analysis. The author uses them to show differences between local and foreign patterns of working in the field. The significant role of wandering is stressed as a unique property of ethnographers’ work. Another factor strongly influencing this professional group’s habitus is class distinction, typical for bourgeois circles. It is said to affect the way the subjects of research are usually treated. Also, the author muses over the relationship of photography as a medium and a peculiar act of collecting and gathering, so typical for ethnography.

This article tries to interpret the lyrics from From Her to Eternity (1984), a debut studio album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, including a cover of a song originally written by Leonard Cohen. As an example of a rock song lyrics study, it follows the receptive trace while reflecting on the beginnings of the creative path of this outstanding songwriter, rock music composer and vocalist endowed with a captivating voice. Nick Cave’s first musical incarnation was the Boys Next Door (1976–1980, the band changed its name several times and for a longer time was known as Concrete Vulture), later followed by the Birthday Party (1980–1983), Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (1984–), and Grinderman (2006–2011). Originating from Warracknabeal, Australia, Nicholas E. Cave is considered to be one of the best rock culture artists, confirming his class as with every new album. His last two productions, Idiot Prayer: Nick Cave Alone at Alexandra Palace (2020) and Carnage (2021, a studio album recorded in a duo with the outstanding multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis), are beautiful, moving, and extraordinary works. The former is a concert film and a live album featuring Cave performing solo on piano, and it serves as the final film in a trilogy of this Brighton-based singer and composer, along with the phenomenal 20,000 Days on Earth (2014) and One More Time with Feeling (2016). Nick Cave is an artist who writes about loneliness, pain, and yearning for love, as clearly evidenced by From Her to Eternity, a moving study of the anthropology of love.

The aim of the article is to review relationships of people and machines in the light of technological and cultural development of chess. I posit that a pre-modern desire to create an invincible machine has changed since a breakthrough game played between Garry Kasparov and Deeper Blue computer in 1997, and turned into an opposite desire: to play an defeat the machine. In contemporary chess community transversal connections between a man and a computer are crucial – not only for the future of the game, but also for the development of human cognitive structures and the emergence of processes taking place within the chess computer systems, which can be defined as quasi-humane.

This article focuses on female hard rock and (heavy) metal artists largely marginalised in previous national research on the anthropology of popular music. The current state of research is presented in a context. Selected topics are discussed related to the artistic practices and image, the multidimensionality of the voice, the category of the body, and the aesthetics of the aging of female artists. The (heavy) metal culture is analysed in the context of exhibitionism defined in a non-reductionist manner not only as a kind of sexual paraphilia, but more broadly as a tendency (at times excessive) to reveal personal and intimate details to others, expose one’s self, and in some cases also one’s body. The text focuses on Girlschool, the British longest-running all-female rock band whose career can be viewed from the perspective of longue durée, and Otep, an American band synthetically characterised through its leader’s political manifestations represented on the album Kult 45 (2018). The careers of the both bands are analysed in terms of the dominant metal masculinist paradigm, as well as from the perspective of ideological discourses and the (trans)media logic of convergence culture.

This article discusses one of the most polyphonic works by Cyprian Norwid – the dramatic diptych" Tyrtej – Za kulisami" [Tyrtej – Behind the Scenes], proposing a multifaceted interpretation. Given that the compositional chaos and gaps in the manuscript gave rise to the textual and editorial disputes that proved critical for the interpretation of the work, this paper first focuses on the manuscripts of both plays and their most recognised editions (by Zenon Przesmycki, Juliusz W. Gomulicki, and by Julian Maślanka). Second, it examines the attitude of Norwid’s diptych to dramatic forms and traditions, including ancient tragedy, different variants of comedy, Romantic tragedy, music drama, nativity play, and cultural performance. The analysis of the ideological layer sheds some light on several issues such as: the condition and the mission of the poet (the confrontation of Tyrtaeus [Tyrtaios, Tyrtej] with the contemporary poet Omegitt as Norwid’s interpretation of the concept of poetry), questions about the nature and development trends of human civilisation (the confrontation of the formation systems of ancient Athens, Sparta, and the 19th-century population as an expression of the author’s historiosophical pessimism), and the anthropological reflection inspired by Diogenes of Sinope, referred to in Za kulisami, and his ‘search for an honest man’ (as Norwid’s critique of the human condition in the 19th century and the expression of his anthropological ideal).
