The author of the sketch convinces that literature may be treated as a model of a culture, as both these areas of human activity are subject to the same rules of dynamism and alternation, i.e. replacing worn-out forms by innovative ones. In the history of the Polish culture of the 20th century three types of culture are distinguished: politicized, autotelic, consumerist. The predominance of one of the types listed was connected in Poland with the experiences of the nation, where, after brief moments of freedom, there were long years of bondage or political oppression. The situation changed radically only after 1989, when Poland regained full independence. But it was because of the imitative nature of the cultural changes that in the democratic society of the Polish Third Republic we currently have a surfeit of aesthetical offers with simultaneous vagueness of norms, hierarchy and value, which constitutes a relative characteristic of West European postmodernism.

In my article, I attempt to analyze the philosophical and artistic premises of the autobiographical project realized in the poetry of Marcin Świetlicki. I try to show that this project leads to negation of the need of existence, both in the order of a work and in the order of existence, of a distinct form of subjective identity, typical for the modern culture of presence. The subject of my interest is a peculiar kind of lyrical autobiographical narrative which I analyze referencing, among others, the concept of authenticity understood in the context of de Man’s approach to irony. In the final part of the article, I suggest a possible direction of considerations concerning the eponymous phenomenon of nonexistence as a negative, “phantom” form of presence that escapes presentation

Podjęty w artykule problem transferu kulturowego przybiera najpierw postać pytania o warunki udanego przeszczepienia dzieł literackich, a następnie o kryteria jego oceny. Wśród tych ostatnich autor wyróżnia trzy: wpływ przełożonego dzieła na literaturę języka przekładu, jego krytyczną recepcję oraz udział autora w debatach publicznych. Przeszczepione z sukcesem dzieło staje się elementem „literatury światowej”, kształtowanej jednak zawsze w obrębie określonej (tu: angloamerykańskiej) kultury. Zagadnienia te omówione zostają na konkretnych przykładach tłumaczeń współczesnej literatury polskiej na angielski i formach jej obecności w kulturze angloamerykańskiej, przy czym w centrum uwagi znajduje się nie tylko oddziaływanie przekładów na literaturę kultury docelowej, ale także wpływ tej literatury na przełożone dzieło. Bowiem transfer kulturowy to proces wielokierunkowej osmozy, w którego wyniku zmienia się i dzieło, i jego nowe środowisko.
The article addresses the problem of cultural transfer, first, by defining its conditions, and, secondly, by asking about the criteria by which we can measure its success. Among the latter, one can mention the impact of the translated work on the target language literature, the critical reception of the work, and on its author’s presence in the public space of the foreign culture. The successfully transferred work becomes an element of “world literature,” constituted differently in different cultures. The article discusses these issues by analyzing specific examples of translations of contemporary Polish literature into English and various forms of their presence in the Anglophone world. Special attention is paid not only to the influence these translations have on the literature of the target language, but also on the ways in which they are in turn affected by their new cultural and linguistic environment. Cultural transfer is thus seen as a process of multidirectional osmosis, in effect of which both the translated work and foreign literature are modified.

Many characteristics of the prose of the outstanding Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal make his works quite difficult for adaptation for the cinema screen. Nevertheless, many films based on these works achieved a considerable artistic success and wrote themselves into the history of cinema. The novella film Pearls of the Deep (1964), along with two short films that had eventually remained outside it, became a peculiar manifesto of the Czechoslovak New Wave and a generation of young authors at the start of their artistic career. Later, the most prominent director of adaptations of Hrabal’s works became Jiří Menzel, who won the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film already for his first feature film, the adaptation of Hrabal’s Closely Observed Trains. The Hrabal–Menzel writer-and--filmmaker duo is an outstanding and unique phenomenon.

The aim of the article is to present the individual and intense experience of sensing the world, whose account can be found in the novel Salt of the Earth. The term “religious experience” was taken from William James. The author of the article first mentions the interpretative difficulties connected with the structural irony, which calls into question the statements verbalized in the novel. Taking into account this complexity, he points out four elements which justify talking about a religious experience in the Salt of the Earth. Firstly, he points up the title, which evokes a religious perception of the world and assumes a response to a calling which comes from God. Secondly, he refers to the Prologue (which does not contain structural irony), which contains the motif of war as a blasphemy. Thirdly, he analyses those passages in which the narrator weakens their distance towards Piotr Niewiadomski’s point of view and favourably assumes the magical interpretation of natural phenomena. Lastly, he refers to the Christian-Orphic-Hutsul motif of the immortality of the soul and contact with the dead.

The author of the article asks the emigration literature a perverse question concerning the world that it does not present. He references a Polish book by Juliusz Kornhauser and Adam Zagajewski, famous in early 1970s. He enumerates the peculiar “blanks” in this text, the spheres of the American reality that have not been shown in the emigration literature. The reason why they have been ignored was not always the ongoing propaganda warfare in the ideologically divided world of the era.

Artykuł dotyczy analizy wybranych stereotypów w powieściach Louise Erdrich w tak zwanej sadze o Pillagerach oraz w The Round House i LaRose. Autorka zestawia dekonstrukcję stereotypów rdzennych Amerykanów z pogłębieniem portretów psychologicznych Amerykanów polskiego pochodzenia, koncentrując się na temacie historii i religii. Najważniejsze wątki to zależność bohaterów od fundamentalistycznie pojmowanego katolicyzmu i szamanizmu Odżibwejów. Artykuł zwraca uwagę na skutki przymusowej chrystianizacji u Odżibwejów i bezrefleksyjnie kontynuowanego katolicyzmu u potomków polskich imigrantów, co prowadzi do rozmycia tożsamości i wewnętrznych konfliktów często uzewnętrznianych przez działania autodestrukcyjne. Autorka zwraca też uwagę na wątki humorystyczne, które pokazują, jak bohaterowie stawiają czoła dylematom wynikającym z konfliktu kultur.
This article analyses selected stereotypes present in the novels of Louise Erdrich – in the so-called Love Medicine series, The Round House, and LaRose. The author juxtaposes the deconstruction of stereotypes of Native Americans with the deepening of the psychological portraits of Polish Americans, focusing on the topics of history and religion. The most important motifs are the heroes’ dependence on fundamentally understood Catholicism and on Ojibwe shamanism. The article draws attention to the effects of forced Christianization for the Ojibwe people and to the unreflective continuation of Catholicism in the descendants of Polish immigrants, both of which lead to a blurring of identity and to internal conflicts oftentimes externalized through self-destructive actions. The author also draws attention to humorous themes that show how the characters deal with the dilemmas resulting from the conflict of cultures.

Artykuł rozpatruje problem interpretacji literatury klasyfikowanej jako postkolonialna przez polską i europejską krytykę literacką wraz z kwestią oddawania głosu autorom pochodzącym z byłych kolonii. Przykładem jest tu wizerunek i pisarstwo jednego z najbardziej eminentnych twórców tej literatury, martynikańskiego poety i polityka Aimé Césaire’a. Jako powszechnie znany w naukach humanistycznych przedstawiciel ruchu negritude stał się ofiarą pojęcia, które sam stworzył: ideologiczne, uproszczone rozumienie, popularyzowane przez inne wielkie postaci tego ruchu, narzuciło schemat, jakim należy posługiwać się przy lekturze dzieł Césaire’a. Proponując ponowne odczytanie poematu Powrót do rodzinnego kraju, staram się w artykule przekroczyć jego zastane analizy i ograniczenia dotychczasowych tłumaczeń w celu rzeczywistego oddania głosu, który wpisano w tekst.
This article examines the problem of interpretation of literature classified as postcolonial by Polish and European literary criticism along with the issue of giving voice to authors from the former colonies. The public image and the work of one of the most eminent authors of this kind of literature, the Martinique poet and politician Aimé Césaire, serves as an example. As a well-known representative of the negritude movement in the humanities, he became a victim of the concept that he himself created – an ideological, simplified understanding, popularized by other great figures of this movement, introduced a pattern that became obligatory when reading Césaire’s works. By proposing a rereading of the epic Notebook of a Return to the Native Land, the article attempts to overcome earlier analyses and the limitations of existing translations in order to accurately represent the voice that is inscribed into the text.

Tekst W lustrze literatury – czesko-polski mit środkowoeuropejski i jego przeobrażenia jest próbą zarysowania przemian mitu środkowoeuropejskiego, na który składają się kolejno: mit habsburski oraz jego kolejne ujęcia w twórczości austromodernistów po 1918 roku; odrodzenie mitu Europy Środkowej, które nastąpiło po drugiej wojnie światowej i związane było z ustrojem posttotalitarnym wprowadzonym w państwach należących do bloku sowieckiego; okres potransformacyjny – od lat dziewięćdziesiątych XX wieku do chwili obecnej. Komparatystyczne zestawienie literatury polskiej i czeskiej pozwala na prześledzenie rozwoju, transformacji i wyciszenia mitu Europy Środkowej, który jednocześnie wyraża problemy tożsamościowe obu narodów.
The article In the Mirror of Literature. The Czech–Polish Central European Myth and Its Transformations is an attempt to outline the transformations of the Central European myth, which consists of the Habsburg myth and its transformations expressed in the works of Austromodernists after 1918; the revival of the Central European myth, which took place after the Second World War and was connected with the post-totalitarian regime introduced in the countries belonging to the Soviet bloc; and the posttransformation period – from the 1990s to the present. The comparative juxtaposition of Polish and Czech literature allows us to trace the development, transformation, and silencing of the myth of Central Europe, which at the same time expresses the identity problems of both nations.

The author of the article analyses the first three novels from Karl Ove Knausgård’s cycle My Struggle (Min Kamp). The author focuses mainly on the identity of the hero-narrator and on the critical views on contemporary culture presented in the novels. The author sees the real value of the novels in the fresh approach to the narrative forms, the construction of the first-person narrator, the re-evaluation of reality and in the ethical elements of language. The author also stresses the vitalism demonstrated by the writer. The author singles out the key formal features of this prose and confronts them with the twentieth century literary tradition as well as with contemporary culture.

Artykuł przedstawia argentyńską recepcję autora Trans-Atlantyku od jego przybycia do Buenos Aires aż do śmierci we Francji. Artykuł jest podzielony na trzy części, każda z nich poświęcona jest jednej z trzech dekad życia Witolda Gombrowicza. Autor wspomina o inicjalnych próbach nawiązania kontaktu z pisarzami argentyńskimi (na przykład z Jorge Luisem Borgesem czy czasopismem „Sur”), opublikowaniu pierwszych tekstów oraz zbiorowego tłumaczenia Ferdydurke w Café Rex w latach czterdziestych i zauważa, że w latach pięćdziesiątych Gombrowicz pogodził się z pisarskim nieistnieniem w kraju swej emigracji i zmienił strategię autopromocji. Dopiero po powrocie do Europy spotkał się z pierwszymi dowodami uznania w Argentynie, czemu towarzyszyła publikacja Diario argentino (Dziennik argentyński, wybór z Dziennika przygotowany z myślą o czytelniku argentyńskim).
This article presents the Argentinian reception of the author of Trans-Atlantyk from his arrival in Buenos Aires until his death in France. The article is divided into three parts and each of them is dedicated to one of the three last decades of Witold Gombrowicz’s life. The author mentions the initial attempts of establishing relations with Argentinian writers (Jorge Luis Borges, for example, or the circle of the Sur magazine), first publication of texts as well as the collective translation of Ferdydurke in Café Rex during the 1960s, and recognizes that sometime in the 1950s Gombrowicz made peace with the fact of his literary obscurity in the land of his emigration, therefore changing his strategy of self-promotion. Only after he returned to Europe did the first signs of recognition reach him from Argentina, where the Diario argentino was just published (it was a selection of writings from Gombrowicz’s Diary for the Argentine reader).

Przedmiotem uwagi jest literaturoznawstwo polskie i bułgarskie jako zupełnie odmienne pod względem uwarunkowań społeczno-kulturowych, politycznych i wyznaniowych. Analiza prowadzona jest w perspektywie postsekularnej i służy wskazaniu na możliwe kryptoteologiczne ramy dla założeń i praktyk typowych dla polskiego i bułgarskiego pola naukowego. Celem jest naświetlenie kontekstów kulturowych, warunkujących lokalne specyfiki, a także wskazanie na możliwości wykorzystania tychże na potrzeby ożywczego samozdystansowania dyscyplin(y).
The article addresses the differences in the ways in which the research issue of “literaturę and religion” is understood and interpreted in the humanities. The focus of attention is on Polish and Bulgarian literary studies as two cases which are very different in terms of socio-cultural, political and religious conditions. The analysis is conducted from a postsecular perspective and serves to indicate a possible crypto-theological framework for assumptions and practices typical of the Polish and Bulgarian scholarly fields. The aim of the article is to comment on the cultural contexts that condition local specificities, and to show the possibilities of using those for the purposes of self-distancing and invigorating of the discipline(s).
