In this study, the author presents a theoretical model of a semi-active magnetorheological (MR) twin-tube damper concept. The model relies on geometric variables and material properties and can be used in engineering and research studies on damper structures. Other non-linear characteristics, namely, the fluid chamber compressibility, fluid inertia, cylinder elasticity, friction, one-way check valves are included into the model as well. The author studies the performance of the damper model as design variables are varied, and the results are analysed and discussed.

An analytical approach was developed for rectangular platelet reinforced composites which could be used for a 3D elastic stress field distribution subjected to an applied axial load. The ends of the platelet could be bonded to the matrix. Exact displacement solutions were derived for the matrix/platelet fromtheory of elasticity. These displacement solutions were then superposed for achieving analytical expressions for the matrix/platelet 3D stress field components over the entire composite system including the platelet end region, using the adding imaginary fiber technique. The platelet/matrix components could exactly satisfy the equilibrium and compatibility conditions and satisfy the equilibrium requirements and the overall boundary conditions. The obtained analytical results were then validated by FEM and Shear-lag modeling, and some of discrepancies among the shear-lag models were resolved. Good agreements were observed between the analytical and numerical predictions.

This study addresses the task of predicting the transformation plasticity induced during pha- se transformation of the 16MND5 carbon steel from austenite to bainite under low externally applied stress using a semi-theoretical model based on the Greenwood-Johnson mechanism. Both models proposed by Leblond et al. (1989) and Taleb and Sidoroff (2003) sufficiently describe the evolution of the TRansformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP) during continuous cooling of the austenitic phase. Nevertheless, TRIP values predicted by these models unde- restimate measured data through the first half of the transformation and overestimate them through the second half. So, we propose in this paper a method to improve Taleb’s model in order to remove discrepancies between theoretical and experimental results throughout the whole transformation and obtain a better description of experimental data.

The subject of the paper are four corrugated cores in form of circular arcs, a sin wave, trapezoids and an odd function. Transverse shear modules of these corrugated cores are analytically determined. A comparative analysis of these transverse shear modules is pre- sented. Areas of cross sections of the corrugated cores are constant. The theoretical study shows considerable sensitivity of the shear modulus to shape of the corrugation.

The methodical study of safeguard of artistic heritage and other devices subjected to earthquake and, in general, to time-dependent forces has considerably spreaded in the last years, thus increasing researchers’ interest in problems concerning motions of rigid objects simply supported on a base plane. The behaviour of piece of equipments, statues, storage tanks, or even tall buildings has been in fact studied as that of rigid bodies with relation to different base excitations. In some cases, the possibility of influencing the quality of motion can be a strong tool to reduce vulnerability, like in the cases in which rocking motion is to be avoided and sliding motion is welcome. This paper focuses the attention on this last problem. This is the same large class of both non-structural and structural elements that can lose their functionality because of earthquake motions. The results of numerical modelling of sliding and rocking motion in presence of both different excitations and mechanical parameters are presented and compared with experimental data performed by the authors. The results developed are in good agreement with the laboratory tests, and this assures the reliability of both the analytical procedure and the determination of the parameters involved.

If a thin-walled member is subjected to dynamic load, the estimation of its structural behaviour has to count for the strain-rate influence upon stress-strain material characteristics. It is particularly important when a thin-walled member works as an energy absorber. In the paper, the problem of collapse load, post-failure behaviour and energy dissipation of a tubular structure subjected to lateral impact load is presented. The analytical solution of the problem of initial collapse load and post-failure behaviour of a single tube is discussed. The analysis is limited to the “dynamic progressive crushing”, which means that we take into account the strain-rate but neglect inertia effects. The solution is based on the yield-line analysis and takes into account the impact velocity and strain rate, using the Cowper-Symonds constitutive relation. The same problem concerning both the single tube and multi-member tubular structure subjected to lateral bending impact load is solved using Finite Element (FE) simulation, which also takes into account the impact velocity and strain rate, using the corresponding to Cowper-Symonds Perzyna material model. Results of numerical calculations are compared with those obtained from the quasi-dynamic tests performed at different loading velocities on single tubes. The results are shown in load-deformation diagrams and diagrams of deformation patterns.

The aim of this research is to investigate experimentally as well as numerically active damping effects of cantilever beam transverse vibrations. The control system under consideration consists of collocated piezoceramic sensor and actuator patches, which are coupled with velocity feedback. Experimental results of free and forced vibrations confirmed the effectiveness of the control circuit with the analog derivative controller for suppresion of low-frequency beam motion. The numerical simulation is performed to verify the theoretical models of the tested mechanical system. the analysis is based on the simplified pure bending interaction between the perfectly bonded piazoactuator and the beam, which has a constant equivalent stiffness or is locally stiffened by the piezoceramic patches. The applied dynamic coupling model includes the effects of the actuator tangential inertia forces and the bonding layer with a finite shearing stiffness. The results of the simulation are in a good agreement with the experiment taking in the simplified model of the system. Considering the bonding layer and the actuator longitudinal movement decreases the active damping effectiveness even for a relatively stiff glue layer.
W pracy przedstawiono rezultaty badań doświadczalnych i symulacyjnych aktywnego tłumienia poprzecznych drgań belki wspornikowej. Zastosowany układ sterowania składa się z piezoceramicznych elementów tworzących parę pomiarowo-wykonawczą, połączonych pętlą prędkościowego sprzężenia zwrotnego. Wyniki eksperymentu, dotyczące zarówno drgań swobodnych, jak i drgań wymuszonych w zakresie niskich częstości,potwierdzają skuteczność układu sterowania z analogowym regulatorem różniczkującym. W celu weryfikacji teoretycznych modeli badanego układu przeprowadzono symulację numeryczną. W ramach analizy wprowadzono uproszczony model układu mechanicznego (podejście statyczne), w którym oddziaływanie elementu wykonawczego idealnie połączonego z belką ograniczono do czystego zginania, przyjmując belkę o stałej zastępczej sztywności lub belkę lokalnie usztywnioną przez naklejone elementy piezoelektryczne. W zastosowanym dynamicznym modelu połączenia uwzględniono bezwładność elementu wykonawczego działającego na belkę za pośrednictwem warstwy kleju o skończonej sztywności na ścinanie. Wyniki symulacji dość dobrze pokrywają sie z wynikami uzyskanymi na drodze doświadczalnej także w przypadku uproszczonego modelu układu. Uwzględnienie w obliczeniach warstwy kleju oraz wzdłużnego ruchu elementu wykonawczego powoduje obniżenie skuteczności aktywnego tłumienia nawet dla warstw o stosunkowo dużej sztywności.

The theoretical relationship between the initial fracture toughness and unstable fracture toughness in the double-K model was established based on fracture extreme theory. Using this relationship, the initial fracture toughness and unstable fracture toughness can be ob- tained from each other without experimental measurement. The values of unstable fracture toughness of three-point bending concrete beams were calculated with the input of initial fracture toughness. The calculation was simplified by using the weight function method. The calculated results were compared with those obtained by the double-K method. It is shown that the results obtained from these two methods show a good agreement. Unstable fracture toughness is affected by tensile strength and specimen size whereas unaffected by the ratio of initial crack length to depth. In addition, the softening function was found to have a negligible influence on the calculated result by a theoretical relationship.

There are several low frequency vibration phenomena which can be observed in automotive disk brakes. Creep groan is one of them provoking noise and structural vibrations of the car. In contrast to other vibration phenomena like brake squeal, creep groan is caused by the stick-slip-effect. A fundamental investigation of creep groan is proposed in this paper theoretically and experimentally with respect to parameter regions of the occurrence. Creep groan limit cycles are observed while performing experiments in a test rig with an idealized brake. A nonlinear model using the bristle friction law is set up in order to simulate the limit cycle of creep groan. As a result, the system shows three regions of qualitatively different behavior depending on the brake pressure and driving speed, i.e. a region with a stable equilibrium solution and a stable limit cycle, a region with only a stable equilibrium solution, and a region with only a stable limit cycle. The limit cycle can be interpreted as creep groan while the equilibrium solution is the desired vibration-free case. These three regions and the bifurcation behavior are demonstrated by the corresponding map. The experimental results are analyzed and compared with the simulation results showing good agreement. The bifurcation behavior and the corresponding map with three different regions are also confirmed by the experimental results. At the end, a similar map with the three regions is also measured at a test rig with a complete real brake.

In this paper, an exact closed form solution is introduced for the heat conduction equation in cylindrical coordinates under consecutive inner time dependent surface heat flux by both the Fourier and dual-phase-lag (DPL) models. The solution is used to calculate the temperature distribution in a gun barrel subjected to single and consecutive shoots, and the results are compared with literature. The parametrical study is done using the analytical solution to show the effect of shooting frequency which leads to different heat power from each fire shoot and temperature distribution. The result shows good ability of analytical solution for estimation of temperature distribution in the gun barrel, especially under consecutive shoots in which unexpected incidents such as barrel melting is so probable. The closed form solution can be applied for verification of other numerical works in this area.

This paper presents preparation with modeling and theoretical predictions of mechanical properties of compatibilized functionally graded and uniform distribution polyethylene/modified montmorillonite nanocomposites manufactured by solution and melt mixing techniques. The morphology is studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and comparisons are made between two techniques. Young’s modulus of nanocomposites for functionally graded and uniform distributions is calculated using a genetic algorithm and is then compared with the results of other theoretical prediction models mentioned in the literature as well as experimental results. It is found that the melt mixing technique is the preferred preparation method, and the results obtained from the theoretical predictions of genetic algorithm procedure are in good agreement with the experimental ones.

In this essay, a constitutive model for nearly incompressible elastic behavior is extended to the case to thermal effects. First, the use is made of the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into a thermal and a mechanical part. The thermal part is purely volumetric. Additionally, the mechanical part is multiplicatively decomposed into a volume-preserving and a volume-changing part so that the final stress state shows the influences of the temperature-dependence. The proposed model is carefully studied in view of the thermo-mechanical coupling effects. Second, the model is implemented into a time-adaptive finite element formulation based on higher-order Rosenbrock-type methods, which is a completely iteration-free procedure so that really fast computations are available. The article concludes with a three-dimensional numerical simulation of a representative elastomeric tensile specimen.
W pracy przedstawiono model niemal nieściśliwego, sprężystego zachowania się materiału, rozszerzając go na efekty termiczne. Na początku rozważań dokonano multiplikatywnej dekompozycji gradientu deformacji na część termiczną i mechaniczną. Część termiczna wykazuje charakter czysto objętościowy. Dodatkowo, część mechaniczną zdekomponowano na element zachowujący objętość i element o zmiennej objętości w ten sposób, że wypadkowy stan naprężeń wykazuje wrażliwość na temperaturę. Zaproponowany model szczegółowo zbadano w kontekście efektów sprzężenia termomechanicznego. W dalszej części pracy, analizowany model zastosowano do czasowo adaptacyjnej metody elementów skończonych sformułowanej na podstawie metod Rosenbrocka wyższych rzędów. Takie sformułowanie umożliwia uzyskanie procedury beziteracyjnej, co z kolei pozwala na wykonanie wyjątkowo szybkich obliczeń numerycznych. Artykuł zamyka przykład symulacji numerycznej trójwymiarowej próbki elastomeru poddanej próbie rozciągania.

Przeprowadzono analizę porównawczą wyników teoretycznych uzyskanych metodą symulacji cyfrowej z wynikami badań eksperymentalnych przeprowadzonych na maszynie wytrzymałościowej MTS. W pracy omówione są rozważania teoretyczne, metoda przeprowadzenia badań oraz porównanie wyników badań.

The conversion of biogas to electricity presents an attractive niche application for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). A number of attempts have been made to use biogas as a fuel for high temperature fuel cell systems such as SOFCs. Biogas can be converted to a hydrogen-rich fuel in a reforming process which can use steam or carbon dioxide as the reforming agent. Conventionally, the reforming process is conducted at around 850◦C using several different catalysts depending on application. Biogas naturally contains the reforming agent, carbon dioxide, however, for typical biogas the content of carbon dioxide is insufficient to conduct the reforming process safely. Fore those cases, steam is added to prevent carbon deposition. Carbon formation occurs between the catalyst and the metal support, creating fibers which damage the catalytic property of the reactor. A number of papers have dealt with the problem of carbon deposition during both methane steam reforming and dry reforming. However, from the standpoint of solid oxide fuel cells, not every carbon-free condition is optimal for its operation. This paper treats this subject, explaining the mechanism of carbon formation during the steam reforming of biogas and using a numerical analysis to determine efficient and carbon-free working conditions.

The quantitative description of adhesion force dependence on the probe shapes are of importance in many scientific and industrial fields. In order to elucidate how the adhesion force varied with the probe shape in atomic force microscope manipulation experiment, we performed a theoretical study of the influences of the probe shape (the sphere and parabolic probe) on the adhesion force at different humidity. We found that the combined action of the triple point and the Kelvin radius guiding the trend of the adhesion force, and these two fundamental parameters are closely related to the probe shape. Whilst, the theoretical results demonstrate that the adhesion force is in good agreement with the experiment data if the van der Waals force is taken into account.
