Opis:
The objective function based on mesh quality metric has a major impact on smoothing unstructured tetrahedral meshes. The ability of seven mesh quality metrics to distinguish four kinds of poor-quality elements and their effects on the change of element shape are analyzed in detail. Then, four better mesh quality metrics are chosen to construct objective functions. In addition, the rational determination of searching direction and the optimal step size in the optimization algorithm of solving the objective function are proposed. Finally, comparisons with the other three objective functions are made according to different number of elements, iteration limit, and the desired accuracy in the improved mesh. It is found that with the increase of the number of elements, the time consumed during optimization increases, but the changes of the worst quality element are different. The number of iterations has little effect on the mesh quality and the time cost. The increasing of the desired degree of accuracy will improve the mesh quality and cost more time. Furthermore, the approach using objective function is compared with Freitag’s common approach. It is clearly shown that it performs better than the existing approach.

Opis:
This paper presents comparison of numerical testing methods of an impulse loading which comes from a detonation process, i.e. blast wave propagation in a gas medium. Investigations were carried out using an analytical and numerical model based on the Finite Element Method. In order to reduce computational time, the substitute analytical model with one degree of freedom was implemented, which replaced a chosen actual system (I-section steel column). For structure modelling, the constitutive model was used, which included the strain rate effect. From the performed analyses, an acceptable similarity was noticed, although the discrete model due to greater forces gave inflated results. Nevertheless, it should be pointed out that simplified methods do not take any wave and flow around effects into consideration, which have an influence on the dynamical response of the structure and are possible to implement in the gas medium coupling.

Opis:
Implantation of synthetic meshes provokes complications which require long-lasting follow-up. The mesh materials exposed to physiological conditions demonstrate differences in failure load, stiffness and extension. Mechanical alterations of explants made of polyester were investigated using a uni-axial tensile test and a relaxation test. The tensile strength of the explanted meshes changed in the transversal direction. The elastic modulus in the same direction increased two times. A magnified mesh image displayed mesh alteration. The relaxation tests revealed that the initial stress decreases after implantation while the reduction of stress increases in the interval 50%-96.6%.
