Opis:: Mobile systems, by nature, have finite resources. Radio spectrum is limited, expensive and shared between many users and services. Mobile broadband networks must support multiple applications of voice, video and data on a single IP-based infrastructure. These converged services each have unique traffic holding and quality requirements. A positive user experience must be obtained through efficient partitioning of the available wireless network resources. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has developed a comprehensive Quality of Service (QoS) parameter to address this problem. The regular control of service quality is critical for operators to ensure user Quality of Experience (QoE), establish new business models and monetize services. It enables operators to employ fair-use resource policies and maintain network performance during peak traffic times. Wireless mobile communication is tending towards an integrated system of Internet and telecommunication technologies, where mobile users move freely anytime and everywhere. They desire to communicate with any device using the best service available. In this paper QoS management issues in mobile communication are described. The authors present an insight into subscriber behavior and related factors that affect the QoE of mobile data services.

Opis:: In this paper the quality aspects of bitrate and loudness in digital broadcasting and webcasting systems are examined. The authors discuss a survey concerning user preferences related with processing and managing audio content. The coding efficiency of a popular audio format is analyzed in the context of storing media. An objective study on a representative group of signal samples, as well as a subjective study of the perceived quality of real-time broadcasted and webcasted radio programs are performed.

Opis:: In this paper, we deal with a coordination game in a network where a player can choose both an action of the game and partners for playing the game. In particular, a player interacts with players connecting through a path consisting of multiple links as well as with players directly connecting by a single link. We represent decay or friction of payoffs with distance as communication costs, and examine the effect of the communication cost on behavior of players in the game and network formation. We investigate properties of equilibrium networks by classifying the link cost and the communication cost, and show diversity of the equilibrium networks.

Opis:: In this paper, the design and analysis of a compact size coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed antenna for ultrawideband (UWB) applications is presented. The antenna has a compact size of 20×20×1.1 .5 .mm and provides a good impedance matching over the entire bandwidth of 3.2–14.3 GHz. The characteristics parameters, i.e. return loss, VSWR and radiation pattern, are analyzed using HFSS 11.0 software.

Opis:: Long distance voice communication has been always of great interest to human beings. His untiring efforts and intuition from many years together was responsible for making it to happen to a such advanced stage today. This paper describes the development time line of antique telephone systems, which starts from the year 1854 and begins with the very early effort of Antonio Meucci and Alexander Graham Bell and ends up to the telephone systems just before digitization of entire telecommunication systems. The progress of development of entire antique telephone systems is highlighted in this paper. The coverage is limited to only analog voice communication in a narrow band related to human voice.

Opis:: Mobile Telecommunication is one of the fastest growing technologies in the world. The effects of its high frequencies and complex modulations to the exposed population are considered in this paper. Experimental studies examining a variety of effects on all levels of the organism, ranging from effects on single cells to effects which manifest themselves as reactions of the entire body, there have been a number of epidemiological studies in order to establish the possible causal correlations between higher exposures to HF EMFs. Recommendations on the reduction of the effects of EMFs of Mobile Telecommunication on humans was presented.

Opis:: A compact planner patch ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna is presented in this paper. The antenna configuration consists of a spectacles-shaped patch and a slotted ground plane. Different parameters are investigated for improving the antenna’s properties and for achieving the preferred UWB band (3.1–10.6 GHz). The experimental and simulated results demonstrate that the proposed antenna acquires an operating bandwidth of 117% (3–11.5 GHz) with a stable omnidirectional radiation pattern, about 89% of average radiation efficiency and 4.2 dBi of average gain with the maximum of 5.7 dBi at 10.2 GHz.

Opis:: The paper addresses the situation of sign language users (mostly deaf people) in the context of inclusion as a political goal. For several reasons, there is often still some confusion with the terms of deaf and hearing impaired. In order to overcome this confusion, a survey is given over the needs of people who have a sign language as their preferred language as well as the needs of people who decide on preferring spoken language (mostly hard-of-hearing people). One should also doubt that the whole target group of people with disabilities in the hearing area consists of two separate groups only. Starting from the right of self-determination, the better solution seems to be the individual right of a person to choose any offers which are useful for her/him. As for other groups of people with special needs, ICT is seen as a big chance for improving their situation in terms of life and job chances. Several projects and experiences are reported.

Opis:: Context-aware computing is a paradigm that relies on the active use of information coming from a variety of sources, ranging from smartphones to sensors. The paradigm usually leads to storing large volumes of data that need to be processed to derive higher-level context information. The paper presents a cloud-based storage layer for managing sensitive context data. To handle the storage and aggregation of context data for context-aware applications, Clouds are perfect candidates. But a Cloud platform for context-aware computing needs to cope with several requirements: high concurrent access (all data needs to be available to potentially a large number of users), mobility support (such platform should actively use the caches on mobile devices whenever possible, but also cope with storage size limitations), real-time access guarantees – local caches should be located closer to the end-user whenever possible, and persistency (for traceability, a history of the context data should remain available). BlobSeer, a framework for Cloud data storage, is a perfect candidate for storing context data for large-scale applications. It offers capabilities such as persistency, concurrency and support for flexible storage schema requirement. On top of BlobSeer, Context Aware Framework is designed as an extension that offers context-aware data management to higherlevel applications, and enables scalable high-throughput under high-concurrency. On a logical level, the most important capabilities offered by Context Aware Framework are transparency, support for mobility, real-time guarantees and support for access based on meta-information. On the physical layer, the most important capability is persistent Cloud storage.

Opis:: Communication platform systems as, e.g., advanced telecommunication computing architecture (ATCA) standard blades located in standardized chassis, provides high level communication services between system peripherals. Each ATCA blade brings dedicated functionality to the system but can as well exist as separated host responsible for servicing set of task. According to platform philosophy these parts of system can be quite independent against another solutions provided by competitors. Each system design can be different and can face with many computer systems design problems. One of the most difficult design problems to solve is system integration with a set of components running on different operating system levels. This paper presents Linux scheduler improvement possibility to make user space application classified as time demanding (required to be serviced by CPU in given amount of time) running in user space together with complicated kernel software structure in the system.

Opis:: This paper will report on a new all-optical technique of relative intensity noise (RIN) suppression for solidstate and semiconductor lasers. The new scheme we have used is based on an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (UMZI), which is able to cancel the intensity noise enhancement at relaxation resonance. Although the relaxation oscillations frequency and the level of the corresponding noise maximum are extremely different concerning solid-state microchip lasers and semiconductor laser diodes, the proposed passive noise suppression is well suited for both types of laser sources used in telecommunication. The UMZ fiber interferometer solution for solid-state lasers demonstrated hereunder was generalized and deployed in case of semiconductor lasers as well.

Opis:: The use of chaotic dynamics for error correction is the subject of extensive research, as the approach allows to avoid the use of redundant data. This work proposes a new technique for non-coherent chaos communications for modifying error-correction depending on chaotic dynamics. In the proposed system, there are two consecutive sequences created from a comparable chaotic map, with the second series being created as the latest value of the initial one. Generation of a sequential chaotic sequence with a comparable chaotic dynamic delivers additional information to the receiver, allowing it to appropriately recover information and, hence, facilitate the receiver’s bit-error performance. For error correction and for detecting the symbol that is transmitted, a suboptimal technique based on the nearest distance between chaotic map trajectories over the n-dimensional sequence received is utilized. Simulation results show that the proposed error correction approach improves Eb/N0 as the dimension of the trajectory map increases, indicating that the method improves overall error correction performance. With the dimension of 4, a gain of 0.8 dB in Eb/N0 is achieved compared with an approach without any error-correcting schemes, at the bit-error probability of 10−3.

Opis:: Network coding is a new technique in the field of information theory and coding theory. This emerging technique offers great benefits in the communication networks such as increased throughput and energy savings. In this paper, we evaluate network coding for video transmission scenarios. In these scenarios, the source nodes encode the video packets, while the intermediate nodes implement network coding before forwarding the encoded packets to the end nodes. Finally, the end nodes decode the received packets in order to recovery the original video. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is used as the video compression standard in this work. We have used the network simulator (NS-2) for our simulations. Our results show that network coding improves the system throughput, reduces the packet loss and improves the video quality in the end nodes.
