Opis:
Sports federations in Nigeria have seen a steady decline in state funding while sport all over the world has become a more capital-intensive enterprise. The role of sport promotion in generating funds for grass-root sport programmes in the country is vital. This study investigates sports promotion as a determinant of basketball development in Nigeria. The key objective of this study is to examine stakeholders’ perceptions of the influence of the media, advertising and sponsorship on basketball development in Nigeria. This study has adopted a descriptive design of survey type with a population of 512 stakeholders in the Nigerian Basketball Premier League, who were all purposively selected as participants. A reliability coefficient of 0.72 was obtained. The study employed a structured questionnaire. Out of the total of 512 copies distributed, 436 were completed and analyzed. The hypotheses were tested using a Chi-square test at alpha 0.05. The findings of this study indicate that the stakeholders perceive sport advertising (Cal. ᵡ2118.450 > 16.129), sport media (Cal. ᵡ278.633 > Crit. ᵡ216.129), and sport sponsorship (Cal. ᵡ257.225 > Crit. ᵡ216.129) as significant determinants of basketball development in Nigeria. The study concluded that sport promotion indices largely determine the development of basketball in Nigeria. The implication is that increased public and private funding into basketball fosters its development in Nigeria. The study recommends more research into effective communication with target markets and active encouragement of corporate organizations; generous sponsorship promotes sports and enhances their business product image.

Opis:
This study aims to research the opinions of students attending the School of Physical Education and Sports at Atatürk University and Marmara University with respect to the universities’ corporate image. The questionnaire which was developed by Örer (2006) with additions introduced by Kaya (2013) was used to acquire data about corporate image amongst universities. The SPSS 16 statistical packet program was used to evaluate the data. During the research, analysis of frequency was used to define demographical features, the t-test to define the difference between corporate images depending on universities and gender, one way analysis of variance (Anova) to define differing empathy levels depending on age, grades and departments, and the Tukey test was applied in order to establish which group causes the dissimilarity. The research indicates that there are meaningful dissimilarities in sub-dimension of service (p=,000) communication (p=,000), belonging (p=,012), satisfaction (p=,000) and management perspective (p=,000). On the other hand there is no meaningful dissimilarity in support sub-dimension (p=,168). (p<0,05).

Opis:
Background. Sports betting has been shown to be escalating among youths in developing countries. However, there is still insufficient information on the predictors of sports betting among this particular social group. The aim of this study was to examine social predictors of sports betting among youths in Ilorin, Kwara State, North Central Nigeria. Material and methods. A cross-sectional community survey was conducted among 470 youths from Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. Social predictors of sports betting (SPSB) were evaluated using a 23-item questionnaire consisting of three parts: Part I - socio-demographic variables (age, gender, employment status); Part II –items on sports betting engagement (SBE); and Part III - items on family influence, peer influence, and media influence. Frequency and percentage, the phi coefficient, and binary logistic regression were used for analyses. Results. The findings revealed a weak relationship between sports betting and family influence (=.218); a moderate relationship between sports betting and peer influence (=.523), and a moderate relationship between sports betting and media influence (=.559). Gender and employment status were significantly associated with sports betting (p < .05). Conclusion. The study showed that family influence, peer influence, media influence, and employment status were predictors of sports betting among Nigerian youths. Gambling regulatory bodies, parents, educators, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should sensitize young people on the dangers of engaging in sports betting as a sustainable source of income.

This article is part of a wider research study about sporting habits which was carried out with young people between 10 and 16 years old from Majorca Island. In this paper we are analyzing what is the profile of Majorcan young athletes by gender, socio-demographic and sport level. A sample of 4301 boys and girls from Majorca were surveyed. The sample was obtained from multistage sampling. A specifically designed questionnaire was used. The results obtained in this study confirm a clear regression in physical activity to increment age of males and females. Also noteworthy are the clearly significant differences between men and women in this age group in terms of sports, frequency, and type of sport practiced. The practicing of sport by parents promotes a greater participation in children. Also, gender marks some differences in relation to the practice of sports in these ages.

Effective health-oriented education in the area of sports and recreation events organization - is not a goal which is easy to achieve. The idea is certainly worthy of attention, since the benefits can be passed on to the organizer, sponsor and the entire society. The purpose of this paper is to present sports and recreation events as a means of promoting physical culture and health-oriented education. Motions, proposals, and preconditions (as described here) of effective educational intervention in the organization of events are based on 15-years-long secret (hidden) participatory observation of 141 different (in terms of their organizational specifics) street runs - both in Poland and in the neighbouring countries - Germany, Czech Republic and Slovakia. Sports and recreation events can become an effective instrument of education for a healthy lifestyle only if they are widely available (easily accessible), if they draw media attention, are popular, cyclical (recurring), have a specific program and atmosphere. The organizers of events in the area of physical recreation should not encourage competition but rather educate for regular participation in health-oriented training, while active participation in sports and recreation event might fit in the pre-planned health capacity control. For sports and recreation events to become a carrier of socially desirable values such as health or healthy lifestyle, promoters should intentionally put emphasis on these values and place them above commercial or marketing strategies of sponsors.

Opis:
The 100 m race is not only a sports discipline but also a way of assessing an athlete’s speed abilities. The run over the distance of 400 metres combines both speed and endurance (anaerobic) capacities. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the development of results in men's 100 and 400m sprint races, taking into account the best performance within the age from 6 to 100. By examining the course and the development of the world's leading sprinters’ careers, the authors took into consideration their best final results achieved each year. They were assigned to three research protocols that included age, successive years of starts, and the period before and after their personal best. The results are presented with arithmetic means and standard deviations (SD). In the comparative analysis of groups of runners over various distances (100 and 400m), the percentage value (%) of the result in relation to the world record over the given distance was chosen as a common element. The research has shown that the age range from 20 to 31 in the 100m race and 20 to 29 in the 400m run respectively, are the best periods for continuation of a sports career suitable for the shortest and longest sprint distance at the highest world level. The development of speed abilities up to the age of 14 is similar to the scale of their regression after the age of 35. Knowledge concerning the change in sports performance level in relation to age provides the opportunity to predict the periods of peak performance in a given sports discipline. This enables a rational and proper planning of the training process.

Opis:
This paper analyses the frequency and extent of physical activity (PA) among school-aged children and adolescents in Liechtenstein by regarding selected socio-demographic factors (gender, age and parents’ sports activity). The cross-sectional study is based on an online survey conducted in 2015 among 11-, 13- and 15-year-old pupils (N = 448). According to our findings, children and adolescents do sports in their leisure time 3 ½ days a week, resulting in 6 hours per week on average; the percentage of pupils who do not participate in any sport is less than 5 % in total. Despite high sport participation, only a quarter achieved the WHO recommendation of at least 60 min of moderate-tovigorous physical activity (MVPA) per day. However, a significant decrease in physical and sport activities together with increasing resignation from sport clubs is shown in secondary schools. As a result of this inadequacy, at the end of the compulsory school period, adolescents should be considered as one of the important target groups for health promotion programs. In addition, the relation discovered between the activity level of adolescents and the sport status of their parents emphasizes the high relevance of parents for their childrens’ PA socialisation.

The author presents the political context as well as the operations of subsequent state organizations responsible for the promotion of sports in rural areas in the harsh reality of post-war deficits. The author also stresses the role of the Catholic Church in the newly established social structures in the post-war period. While not supportive of the structures, the church feared that the dynamic social changes would result in a decline in church attendance. The article also discusses the reconstruction and construction of new sport infrastructure in rural areas carried out under a voluntary initiative called Subbotnik. Another period significant in the context of rural sports was the takeover of the People’s Sport Teams by the “Service for Poland” National Organization. Operations under its auspices led to an increased sporting activity.

COPE inventory, coping with stress, football, gender differences, sports stress
Opis:
Background: Stress is an inseparable attribute of sports activities. The answer to the question of how to effectively cope with stress in a competition is one of the most important challenges of sports psychology. The aim of this research is to analyze the stress-management strategies used by football players. Methods: Participants in the study were 32 students of physical education specializing in football and 39 students of management, aged between 19 and 27 years (M = 21.41, SD = 1.76), including 24 women (34% of all respondents). Coping strategies were assessed through application of the multi-dimensional COPE inventory. Results: In comparison with the sample of management students, the group of footballers use the strategy of positive reinterpretation and growth significantly more often, and less frequently use alcohol or other psychoactive substances in a stressful situation. Women use the strategy of seeking emotional support significantly more often than men, while significantly less often using psychoactive substances and humor. Conclusion: This research revealed that trainers and sport psychologists should take into account gender differences and the specificity of the sports discipline of the athletes when working on selection of the best strategies for coping with stress during competitions.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to observe the importance of sport activities among 5th grade pupils in the canton of Schwyz (located in Central Switzerland) and to identify possible differences between children of various nationalities. The cross-sectional study was carried out in 30 randomly selected classes during the school year 2015/2016. The sample (n = 468) consisted of 52.8 % boys and 47.2 % girls, aged 10.8+0.7 years old. Socio-demographic characteristics, interests and participation in sports were established using a standardized questionnaire. The majority of the observed primary school children (85.7%) participate regularly in sports. Approximately 5 hours of sports are practised on average per week; about 18 % are engaged in such activities for more than 7 hours. The percentage of fully sport-abstinent children is around 3.5 %. In accordance with other studies, the influence of immigration backgrounds seems to be mainly moderated by gender. While boys with foreign or Swiss origin are equally enthusiastic about sports, there is clearly a lower level of participation in sports in general and especially in sports clubs among girls who come from an immigrant background. Therefore, they should be considered one of the important target groups for exercise promotion programs.

By preparing the space within an educational institution for a quantitatively significant group of pupils with special needs, we prevent exclusion by enabling environmental integration. That policy of public space management is consistent with the World Health Organization's (UN WHO) "World Action Program for People with Disabilities", the European Union's document "Accessibility: principles and lines directives", as well as with Polish law. The aim of this study was to analyse the adaptation of school sports and recreational infrastructure to the needs of students with different types of disabilities. The study was carried out as a part of the research project DS-300 at the University of Physical Education in Warsaw. According to the premises of the pilot study, the analysis of the available source materials, participant- and open nonparticipant observation together with photographic documentation were applied. Structured interviews with the employees of primary schools with integrated classes in the selected districts of Warsaw (Bielany and Żoliborz) were conducted. A questions layout was used as a research tool for closed-ended structured interview. Adapting school facilities to the needs of students with disabilities (with mobility dysfunctions, visually impaired or with other special needs) is an extremely complex issue due to the variety of disorders. Therefore, the principle that should be applied to the design of education facilities (all levels) needs to be universal design, taking into account their functional availability, including sports and recreational infrastructure for all groups of students, with the message: "designing for the disabled - we design for everyone". It should be emphasized that there is no single, universal and ideal model of integration, or school sports team "without barriers", therefore the problem of functional and curricula concept is still open, and professional search and discussions should be constantly conducted - both practical and theoretical.
