Opis:
The given article was created with reference to lack of correlation between results from densitometry test of bone tissue and its mechanical strength. The changes of bone mechanical strength cannot be solely connected with changes of bone mineral density with micro structural construction of bone tissue. The article describes the research using a computer simulation where changes of physical density and parameters of bone microstructure were modelled. The influences of those parameters for changing the bone mineral density have been computed. It has been calculated during simulation process similar to the way it has been provided from densitometry test. The computation process has been carried out on the basis of computer method of simulation of x-ray radiation propagating through the object and had been was created and tested in the previous research. The model of tested object was defined by spatial high resolution distribution of density. The simulation was executed on a sample of bone tissue. The input data to the model of sample were series of cross-sections obtained previously from micro CT of an animal sample. The changes of parameters were simulated in the model based on a method of 2D image processing. The procedure was used to reduce the trabecular surface for all cross-sections. The results of the algorithm were measured during algorithm process. Images were also analyzed by software to measure parameters of microstructure. It gave a chance to estimate the correlation between measured parameter and parameters of microstructure. The applied method of simulation of attenuation of x-ray radiation allowed to produce densitometry image and to compute parameter similar to bone mineral density. The analysis of obtained results shows how the bone mineral density computed from simulation depends on changes of parameters of microstructure.

Opis:
The paper presents the analysis of mechanical properties of human hip joint bone behaviour basing on the finite elements methods (FEM). Models of a hip joint have been worked out. Stress patterns in these biomechanical systems have been determined. The examination covers the analysis of stress patterns in elaborated models for given examples of a femoral bone loading in respective walking phases. It has been stated that prediction of bone remodelling could be based on methods applied in mechanics of materials and data of a bone mineral content and bone mineral density determined by the densitometry method. The work is an attempt of the bone tissue assessment criterion approach useful in implantology problems in which the bone tissue density depends on the bone loading.

Opis:
The influence of TSH on bones is still vastly unknown and the information that is known is considered controversial. This important relationship has not been studied in detail. The aim of our research was to assess the correlation between TSH, thyroid hormone and bone mineral density in children measured by DXA scanning. Our study group included 36 children (16 girls and 20 boys) mean age 12.9 š 3.3 years. Basic anthropometrical measurements were performed (height, weight, body mass index-BMI), in all subjects. Blood was collected and measured for TSH and FT4. Bone mineral density of lumbar spine (L2-L4 BMD) and total body (Total Body BMD) were measured by DXA and expressed as bone mineral content (BMC [g]) and bone mineral density (BMD [g/cm2]). BMD Z-Score was also calculated. Correlation between the parameters obtained by DXA and anthropometrical data, TSH and thyroid hormone concentration were calculated. A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between height, weight and BMI and BMD which was calculated. Weight and BMI also had a statically significant correlation with Z-Score and total bone mineral content (BMC – expressed in grams). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between TSH level and Z-Score for both L2-L4 lumbar spine and for total body. TSH did not correlate significantly with BMD [g/cm2] and BMC [g]. FT4 was negatively and significantly correlated with Z-Score for both L2-L4 lumbar spine and for total body. There was also no significant correlation between FT4 and BMD [g/cm2] and BMC [g]. Conclusion: 1. Thyroid stimulating-hormone (TSH) appears to be associated with maintenance of bone mineral density in children. 2. BMD Z-Score especially from L2-L4 lumbar spine assessed by DXA scanning is correlated best with hormonal and biochemical factors potentially influencing bone mineralization in children.

Opis:
Bone fractures in children's traumas are enormous problem not only from psychological point of view but in these cases the diagnostic issue is much more relevant. The correct diagnosis leads to proper treatment and reduces the risk of adverse effects. For this reason, plain radiography is not the only step in diagnostic procedure and is often combined with Computed Tomography (CT) and sometimes with Magnetic Resonance (MR). The aim of the study was to assess a contribution of three dimensional volume rendering (3D VRT) images on the diagnosis and the possible qualification to the surgical treatment. The study was performed on 21 patients (12 boys, 9 girls) hospitalized at Pediatric Surgery Department in Sosnowiec from January 2007 to April 2008. All of the patients underwent plain radiography as the first diagnostic step and had CT as an additional imaging procedure. A total number of fractures were 28 vs. 32, respectively diagnosed on X-ray and CT scans. The necessity of surgical reposition was present in 8 patients. Spiral CT and its postprocessing technique 3D VRT play major role in musculoskeletal trauma. They bring particular importance in fracture detailed estimating and any multiorgan injuries. However, the need of performing CT should be limited to uncertain cases and before operation planning because of higher radiation dose.

simulation of absorption law
Opis:
The computer modelling of absorption effect of X-ray radiation in the bone tissue was analysed. An image, which is produced as a result of X-ray absorption was computed based on the absorption law. The simulation enables to define dimensions and resolution of space where the experiment will be realised. A model of a sample contains information about its geometry and distribution of density. It can be made as simple solids or loaded from external source, like files. This method may be useful to load information about bone microstructure into the simulation space. A source of X-ray radiation was defined as a plate, which has initial radiation intensity. Rules of radiation propagation were simplified to straight model where radiation propagates in the direction perpendicular to the surface of detector which records an image. The image is generated by computation of partial absorption for each space elements. The results of simulation of model of micro-structure of bone tissue are presented. They can be useful to show when densitometry test does not contain accurate and full information about bone tissue. It may by helpful in the future while searching for reasons of incomplete correlation between mineral density and mechanical strength.

Opis:
The article describes the concept of measurement of the mechanical strength of trabecular bone dissected from human femoral head. When the studies are performed based on the human trabecular bone, there is a risk that correlation can be not achieved due to high discrepancy in the distribution of the bone density and mechanical properties. The compressive tests and X-ray microcomputed tomography with associated density phantom were used to deliver quantitative data. There is a conclusion that the selection of the region in the femoral head has to be performed very carefully. The region where cylinder is dissected can influence the results and produce fake data, which could not be correlated in the density of bone.

Opis:
This paper presents some results concerning the analysis of X-ray propagation through biological structures. We introduce a physical model of the phenomenon and a numerical method based on this model for simulation of X-ray radiation propagation. The proposed method enables generation of radiological projections like those in the computed tomography or microtomography. We have focused our attention on the attenuation of X-ray radiation in bone tissue. Our computational model enables simulation of radiation propagation in the virtual specimen. The virtual bone microstructures used in our experiments are derived from the microtomography datasets of real bone specimens. The main advantage of our approach is that we can change the microstructure of the virtual sample in many ways by using the image processing methods. Results presented in this paper contain simulations of X-ray propagation for modified and unmodified trabecular microstructures as well as the visualization of the radiation intensity distribution for the simulated cases. With this new simulation technique, it is possible for example to analyze the propagation of X-ray radiation for different pathologic types of bone microstructure (e.g. virtually generated osteoporosis).

Opis:
At present, in mandibular fractures surgical treatment reposition and titanium miniplates osteosynthesis is the most common method used. The treatment results are assessed on the basis of comparative analysis of two radiograms taken before and after fixations of fractures. In this article the objective method of radiological assessment of osteosynthesis is presented. The crucial part of the method is the computer program which was created at The Institute of Computer Biomedical Systems, Silesian University in Katowice. Comparison of placement of bone fragments on a pair of pantomograms taken before and after a particular surgical operation was done. To make the process of the results evaluation an objective one a new parameter - the relative dislocation coefficient - was implemented. Achieved results enable to assess correctness of bone fracture reposition on the pantomographical pictures taken twice, once before and the next time after osteosynthesis.

We present a methodology for navigation-aided surgical treatments in the reconstructive craniofacial surgery. Using the case of zygomatic bone repositioning after gunshot wound trauma the whole preoperative planning process and the intra-operative navigation oriented issues are explicitly described. We have focused our attention on the new navigation oriented aspects and procedures which facilitate and enhance the traditional treatment techniques. Many illustrations let better understand the complex technical dependencies between the main elements of this approach. The presented procedures permit more precise planning and performing of the surgical treatment, reducing intra-operative time and improving the post-operative outcome.

Opis:
This paper presents a method for computer assisted selection of optimal donor sites for autologous osseous grafts in the craniofacial surgery. At the initial graft design stage the surgeon defines in the CT data set the shape of the bone segment to be reconstructed and in the donor region CT data set a set of constraints for the optimization task. This non-automatic step is followed by a fully automatic optimization stage, which delivers a set of sub-optimal and optimal donor sites for a given template. Such approach permits the surgeon to find the best site for harvesting the graft and enables an exact anatomical reconstruction of the osseous section.
