The paper presents a simulation model of an unmanned vehicle propulsion system designed and constructed at the Laboratory of Internal Combustion Engines WAT. The vehicle was modelled in the software environment AMESim. It is intended as a tool for modelling of mechatronic systems, and therefore it was possible to create a link between mechanical parameters such as gears, with elements from the fields of electrical engineering and electronics, such as electric motors and inverters. Presented undercarriage system modelled the platform with 6x6 and independent drive wheels. Presented model of the hybrid structure of a small unmanned vehicle and sub models driver module and the propulsion module battery charging electric current through a combustion engine (generator controls, the switching of electric current battery capacity following a drop below the desired value - for this calculation was 50% of battery capacity). Characteristics of parameters changes of sets are presented. Simulation study for two batteries of different capacities as an example of the synthetic driving test and analyzed the differences between the foundation and set of characteristics. It was found that the higher-capacity battery could provide a better change of speed.

Technology of photovoltaic cells and lithium batteries is being developed rapidly. As a result, attempts to build solar High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) airplanes are more and more frequent. In the future, such airplanes may appear very useful for the economy because they may replace geostationary satellites in several applications. Unfortunately, data on altitude effect on photovoltaic cells and batteries performance are not easily available. Moreover, acquisition cost of cells is very high. Therefore, a tool for inexpensive testing of cells is needed. This article shows a study of very light unmanned airplane that could be used as a testbed for this purpose. Weight assumptions are presented together with concept of geometry and aerodynamic characteristics. Propulsion system is proposed, so also airplane performance is estimated. Finally, results are discussed leading to the conclusion. It appears that unmanned airplane with maximum take-off weight of 1.3 kg can climb to the altitude of 10 km within 4 hours during sunny summer day about the noon. However, only 30% of such days can be used because of strong winds blowing at high altitudes, quite small optimal airspeed of the airplane and constraints due to Air Traffic Management. Moreover, application of variable pitch propeller is recommended as well as some kind of take-off assist. For example, towing or take-off from the hill is desirable to avoid threats resulting from small climb rate.

This paper presents many varied mobile platform suited for different kinds unmanned ground vehicles applications. The Unmanned Ground Vehicle's platform is the glue that holds together all the other aspects ofafield able tactical military unmanned ground vehicle. Unless the platform exhibits a high degree of mobility and outstanding ruggedness it will fail to achieve its target location. If the UGV can not deploy its sensor s at the correct location then the mission is rendered useless. The platform should merge the drive system, a power supply system sufficient for the required mission period, an advanced communication system capable of returning real-time information to the user and a user friendly Human machine Interface that allows long term, stress free operations. The platform must have a very high immunity to electro-magnetic interference, and logistically any tactical UGV must not impose a heavy load on available systems or manpower. Unmanned Ground Vehicle technology areas, platforms for reconnaissance, surveillance and EOD missions, the first dedicated IED disposat robotic platform "Wheelbarrow", remotely controlled French tank (AMX30B2) for mine clearance operations, All terrain vehicle Gamma Goat, schematic of typical hybrid electric power train for UGVs, AHED 8x8 Phantom view revealing power and propulsion are presented in the paper.

Article presents the energetic balance of small-unmanned vehicle hybrid power transmission. The vehicle equipped with series hybrid transmission consisted of electric engines connected to the battery pack and small Diesel power generator. In mentioned construction, battery is used as energy buffer and combustion engine is used more as emergency power supply, and is turned on when battery is depleted. In other condition, power generator can be turned off, without reducing power of transmission parameters, except its range. Investigation was divided on two stages. At first stage generator, charging unit and battery were placed outside the vehicle. One piston power generator was feed by Diesel fuel. Fuel consumption of power generator was recorded from AVL fuel balance and energy parameters were recorded by power line analyser of BMR Company. Generator was connected to the direct current power plant. 70 Ah and 48 DC Lithium-polymer battery was charged from the power plant. After charging cycle, small water resistor was used to discharge the battery. Power parameters of discharged battery were measured. This enable to measure balance form tank to the battery. Second stage of the energetic balance determination was to measure internal resistances of vehicle power transmission from current inverter/converter connected to the engine and through the transmission up to the wheels of the vehicle. Power loss of energy at different speed of vehicle wheels without ground contact was measured in respect of power consumption. The series hybrid transmission is consider less efficient than parallel but because of specific configuration of power transmission, it was possible to reach higher efficiency

One of the applications of Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV) consists in conducting tasks connected to removing and disposing of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). The tasks are often performed in hard to reach places, on off-road terrain, with weights and dimensions of explosives which require the use of work attachments of considerable lifting capacities. Due to this, it is necessary to equip the robot with suspension designed for performing such tasks. Because of variable character of the charges which are subjected to the chassis of robots, it is necessary to build a suspension with variable characteristics and examine efficiency of its action. One of the research methods that can be used for that purpose are the simulations based on the method of Multibody Systems. The paper presents a hydro-pneumatic suspension system of an EOD robot, which has been developed at the Military University of Technology, describes its model, simulation findings and the initial verification thereof based on a real object. Apart from that, special consideration is given to the quality and effectiveness of UGV suspension systems. The development of a basic platform enables the use of the platform for various purposes as a carrier of a multi-sensor system for detecting dangerous materials or for carrying other attachments.

Opis:
Navigating vehicles over difficult terrain requires a drive system ensuring high mobility. It is particularly important in the case of unmanned ground vehicles. It is often not realized that a vehicle occupant frequently plays the role of a multi sensor, highly effective data processor and a control system at the same time. Due to this, the abilities of an unmanned vehicle's drive system should, to the greatest possible extent, compensate for the lack of an inside operator. To achieve this, it has to ensure high precision and ease of controlling. Such possibilities are provided by electric and hydrostatic systems. At the Military University of Technology, Chair of Engineering Equipment, a test platform for an EOD/IED robot was developed. Due to its considerable weight, it was equipped with a hydrostatic drive system. The vehicle has a sixwheeled chassis and a skid steering system. The paper presents initial findings of the research aimed at determining the influence of the applied hydraulic system solution on the appearance of kinematic incompatibilities. The presented experimental research included the identification of internal resistance as well as tests on three types of surfaces.

Opis:
The design process is mostly connected with a proper selection of construction materials. Newly designed UAVs must undergo assessment in terms of performed tasks, range or fuel consumption. A significant influence upon the selection of materials, which are long lasting and resistant to damage, is exerted by the conditions of work of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. They mainly execute their tasks at high altitudes with high speeds, where temperature and pressure differences may extensively damage not only the airframe skin, but also the equipment and the propulsion system itself. The aim of this study is to present the characteristics of materials currently used as well as their assessment in employed construction elements of UAVs. Polymer composites are superior to Al and Ti alloys, steel within the parameters of tensile strength and stiffness. As for the density gradient, polymer carbon fibre composites exceed glass fibre composites, also under cyclically variable loads. Glass fibre composites during tensile testing show higher values and a higher capability of absorbing energy under static and dynamic forces. Polymer matrix composites, reinforced with Kevlar, are less stiff than carbon-fibre composites, due to lower values of elasticity modulus, however they demonstrate higher impact load. Strength tests provide valuable data concerning the properties of a given material, such as tensile modulus E [MPa], tensile strength UTS [MPa], or resistance to high temperatures. It must be noted that these properties significantly affect the functioning of the airframe and its components.

In the first half of 2014, the National Security Bureau has been obliged to develop assumptions of the National Unmanned Systems Programme. Taking into account that UAVs are becoming more and more commonly used not only in armed forces, but also in other structures and national security services as well as branches of the national economy and due to this fact they are among the most prospective systems ensuring safety, it seems that their development and use should become priorities in the field of modernisation of the national security of the Republic of Poland, including also defence. In order to meet this challenge, we need in Poland not only political awareness, but also social acceptance and cooperation of i.e. all users, research and development centres, universities, entrepreneurs and non-government organisations. We are looking for solutions that will enable to concentrate on the rapid development of these innovative and technologically advanced fields of science and economy. There is a pressing need to develop a cooperation model, and as an end result, to create an efficiently working system that will enable not only the purchase of the most modern systems in the aspect of number and operation, but also the creation of prospective solutions on the basis of, to the largest possible extend, Polish research and engineering solutions, which shall be an answer to users' expectations.

Concept of Operations is the first tool being used in capabilities approach to define military needs being very important task in the beginning of the Life Cycle Management process. The inputs to this process are defined based on the scenarios resulting from the Lessons Learned experience. It creates the technology needs for the new military systems and simultaneously the links between militaries, scientists, designers and producers. The success of missions at the very dynamic contemporary battlefield will heavily dependent on functionality engineering forces taking part in them after all at the very low level of command. The main task of engineering forces that are realized within the convoy protection mission aims at greater soldiers’ safety. The efficiency of convoy protection demands a systemic approach and the need to build the system of remote controlled Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV). The design of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), after all their initiating systems, makes Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) missions practically impossible to be realized by humans. The concept of systemic approach to use the remote controlled Unmanned Ground Vehicles for convoys’ protection based on Lessons Learned experiences is presented in this paper.

More and more often, we also talk about searching for replacement fuels for internal combustion engines, so also for those with hybrid drive. The research was carried out on an unmanned land platform equipped with a hybrid propulsion system supplied as standard with Diesel oil. The article presents the problems of comparing the efficiency of a hybrid vehicle fuelled with Diesel oil, but also with alternative fuels based on kerosene and other components. For test, three types of fuels were used, standard Diesel oil, F-34 and with experimental mixture of Jet A-1 fuel with 10% of 2-ethylhexanol. Energy used for charging of the battery, from tank-to-wheel, was calculated. This also enables to calculate total efficiency of such hybrid power transmission, powered with different fuels.

Opis:
Small-unmanned aerial vehicle propellers usually have a low figure of merit due to operating in the low Reynold’s number region due to their size and velocity. The airflow on the airfoil becomes increasingly laminar in this region thus increasing the profile drag and consequently reducing the figure of merit of the rotor. In the article, the airfoil geometries are parameterized using the Class/Shape function transformation. Particle swarm optimization is used to design an airfoil, operating in a Reynolds number of 100,000, which has a high lift to drag ratio. To avoid exceeding geometric constraints of the airfoil, a deterministic box constraint is added to the algorithm. The optimized airfoil is then used for a preliminary design of a rotor; given some design, constraints on the tip chord the rotor radius and the blade root chord, with parameters that achieve the highest theoretical figure of merit. The rotor parameters are obtained using a combination of momentum theory and blade element theory. The figure of merit of an optimal propeller with the same geometric parameters is then compared using the optimized airfoil and the Clark Y airfoil. The optimization is done in MATLAB while the aerodynamic coefficients are obtained from XFOIL. The results of the numerical simulation are presented in the article.

The paper presents result of theoretical analysis of the spatial dynamic performances for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This drone is designed and produced by consortium consisted of The Air Force Institute of Technology, The Military University of Technology, The Warsaw University of Technology and The MSP enterprise. A plane JET-2 is the jet-powered airplane dedicated for Polish Military Forces. It will be used in the training process of anti-aircraft crews. Because of high level of requirements (maximum speed, stall speed, climb rate, range and endurance), it has been designed as the jet-powered aircraft. This plane will perform autonomous flights and therefore it should be stable in all phases of flight – static and dynamic stability is desirable. Therefore, the theoretical analysis focused on the stability performances have been performed, parallel to laboratory tests. They were done using nonlinear mathematical model of the JET-2. This model will be described in the paper as well as selected results of numerical simulations. The UAV JET-1 parameters and main parts of the system with the performances as the take-off mass 80 kg, the maximum speed 150 m/s, the endurance 60 min, the altitude 5000 m are presented in the paper.
