Opis:
The use of renewable fuels can reduce consumption of fossil fuels as well as diversify the range of alternative energy carriers. The advantage of biofuels is that they can be obtained from waste materials. Biofuels derived from vegetable or animal raw fatty material, as a result of transesterification, are characterized by similar physicochemical properties to mineral diesel fuel in terms of quality standards, however the fatty acid composition of the raw material can significantly influence exhaust gas emissions. The aim of the research is to determine the impact of the origin of various renewable biocomponents on exhaust gasses concentration emitted by compression ignition engine. The tests were conducted on a Common Rail, direct injection engine, operating under steady state conditions. Two kinds of biofuels produced from different fatty raw materials (rapeseed oil and swine lard) were used. All the experiments were performed on fuels containing a total of 50% biocomponent shares admixed to commercial diesel fuel. The tested samples included both: binary and ternary mixtures. During the experiments the differences in: hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides concentrations were examined as a result of different fuel composition. The study shows that the best results were achieved for fuel containing both plant and animal biocomponents.

Opis:
Large seagoing vessels are one of the largest pollution sources in the sea environment world. Marine engines operate with extremely low quality fuels contaminated by sulphur and aromatic compounds. Vessels are responsible for an estimated 14 percent total nitrogen oxide emission and 16 percent sulphur oxide, respectively. Nitrogen oxides emissions cause serious problems including acid rain in local areas such as harbours' vicinity. All diesel engine manufacturers have been working on reducing on NOx from ships. This paper describes one of the experimental methods - using non-thermal plasma reactor. NTP reactor was built as the after-treatment module in exhaust gas system in marine diesel engine. Emission measurements were carried out on the engine with and without demonstrator NTP module. The main aim was to analyze exhaust gas compounds during real engine operation, in accordance with test cycles procedureD-2 and E-2 (ISO-8178 rules). The experiment test bench gives the innovative role in the development exhaust gas after-treatment technology for marine systems. One of the most promising methods to decrease the number of toxic compounds from exhaust gas is implementing of NTP reactor as after main treatment module. As the next steps a two-stage plasma-chemical process for the control of harmful compounds: non-thermal plasma reactor and catalyst is proposed. This combination should be more effective and probably gives reduction with more efficiency of harmful exhaust gas compounds.

Opis:
The control of nox emissions from marine engines proves a challenge. Diesel engine manufacturers have been investigating a variety of methods with aim of reducing nox emissions. Currently, the plasma technology is undergoing rapid development in application to diesel engine exhausts. A combination of non-thermal plasma with catalysts can be referred to plasma assisted catalysts technology. This paper briefly describes research efforts aimed at non-thermal plasma reactor development for ship use with primary focus on NO oxidation condition. The part scale plasma reactor models have been designed and manufactured for the purpose of this trial. Exhaust emission plasma after-treatment module was fitted on exhaust outlet path of the marine test bed engine for fractional exhaust gas stream examination. Subsequently, the comprehensive series of trials were performed to assess the exhaust flow properties of the main exhaust channel and plasma reactor by-pass duct. Emission measurements were carried out on engine at steady-state operation. The NO reaction activity was a major task of the experiment and throughout the measurements, the engine outlet nox levels (NO and NO2) were monitored with simultaneous NO, NO2, N2O level recording after NTP reactor.

Opis:
Presented paper shows results of laboratory tests on the relationship between the throttling of a cross area of an air intake duct and the composition of exhaust gas from the marine engine. The object of research is a laboratory four-stroke diesel engine, worked with a load from 50kW to 250kW at a constant speed. During the laboratory, tests over 50 parameters were measured of the engine with technical condition recognized as a “working properly” and with a simulated the air intake duct throttling. The simulation consisted of inserting the throttling flanges to the air intake duct before compressor, limiting duct cross-sectional area by 20% and 60% respectively. The results of laboratory research confirm that the effect of the air intake duct throttling on the engine thermodynamic parameters is clearly visible only at considerable throttling. In the case of measuring the composition of exhaust gas, both mole fractions and emissions of gaseous components markedly affected even at low throttling. For example, 20% throttling of the cross section of the air intake duct increase the mole fraction of carbon monoxide in exhaust gas almost 44% during working the engine with load equal to 250kW, and only 10% of the temperature after air cooler. Keep in mind that the temperature after air cooler was an engine parameter, which undergoes the greatest change during the simulation of that malfunction. The conclusion is that the results of measurements of the composition of exhaust gas may contain valuable diagnostic information about the technical condition of the air delivery to the engine system.

Non supercharged SI engine on LPG with mixture forming by evaporated LPG has lower power by about 8% compared to original petrol engine. This disadvantage can be eliminated by mixture forming by injection of liquid LPG. Report shows the results of the laboratory experimental research on an engine with injection of liquid LPG with the detailed analyses of the energy, power and emission engine parameters in 2 variations of the engine set-up. The thermodynamic analysis of the indicator diagram has shown that the characteristic parameters of the cycle (incl. Parameters of the combustion course) stand practically identical for operation on petrol and on LPG. The measurements on the engine were also oriented on study of conditions in the inlet manifold after injection of the liquid LPG (injection visualization with fuel vaporization, temperature in the intake port) for an explanation of any abnormality on course of the unburned hydrocarbon concentration before catalyst. The experimental results show that automotive engine with injection of liquid LPG like high-quality variation of the car drive with favorable operating economy and positive ecological effects for environment.

The article presents the results of experimental tests of the influence of charging air pressure on content of exhaust gas, especially content nitric oxides (NOx), ofship diesel engine supplied with marine heavy fuel oil IF 40. Nitric oxides emissions for a given engine will depend on charging air parameters. Change of air parameters in this method of reducing NOX emissions involves cooling the air and changes in pressure at the beginning of compression stroke. The process of cooling the scavenging air means decreases the inlet air temperature and at the same time decreases the maximum cylinder temperature. The paper discusses influence of the charging air parameters marine diesel engine on the emission toxic compounds in aspect of protecting the atmosphere against pollution from the sea vessels, pointed to the possibility of reducing NOx emissions by changing the parameters of charging air. In this group of activities undertaken to reduce nitric oxides emissions applied inter alia cooling the air and changes in pressure at the beginning of compression stroke. This is discussed in the background of normative acts, in particular the 73/78 MARPOL Convention (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships) referring to prevention against marine environment pollution, and later amendments to the Convention with Annex VI (Regulation for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships) dealing with reducing the emission of nitric oxides and sulphur oxides into the atmosphere by sea vessels engines. It was also discussed the issue of air humidification as a method to reduce NOx by injecting hot water into a stream of pumped air. This is an overview on the example of two methods proposed for using in marine engines: CASS (Combustion Air Saturation System), HAM (Humid Air Motor system). The results of experimental tests of the influence of charging air pressure on content of exhaust gas, especially content nitric oxides (NOx), of ship diesel engine supplied with marine heavy fuel oil IF40 have been presented in this paper.

Opis:
Doświadczenie ostatnich lat pozwala jednak wypowiedzieć stwierdzenie, iż wykonana praca przynosi wyraźne efekty i doprowadza do globalnego obniżenia emisji substancji szkodliwych. Jednostkowe zużycie paliwa z recyrkulacją i z chłodzeniem wykazuje nieco wyższy poziom niż bez chłodzenia w całym zakresie badanej zmiany momentu obrotowego. Zatem pomimo zastosowania urządzenia EGR o niezbyt skomplikowane budowie w znacznej mierze potwierdzone zostały założenia teoretyczne. Jednakże sterowanie procesem recyrkulacji nie jest łatwe i wymaga dostrojenia parametrów regulacyjnych (kąt wyprzedzenia wtrysku, dawka paliwa).
The systematic limitations of the emission of harmful substances and the implementation of succeeding editions of last time EURO rules, essentially, are nuisance to constructors and the producers of internal-combustion engines. Curiosity however is this, that first of all limitation of the emissions of harmful matter takes place „on paper". At the same time since originate the succeeding intensifications of rules relative of the harmful matter emissions. Later only the hard work of the constructors and producers is begun, in order to equal this what became endowed in the law. The experience of last years permits however to express ascertainment, that the exercised work brings distinct effects and leads to a global lowering of the emission of harmful matter. But therefore activity led in this direction are most justified and necessary. During performed research was found, that the quantity of the nitrogen oxides on the exhaust recirculation application becomes essentially smaller. In accordance with the assumptions recirculation influenced also on growth of the hydrocarbon content. The unitary fuel consumption with exhaust recirculation without the cooling shows the lowering together with growth of engine torque. The unitary fuel consumption with exhaust recirculation and with the cooling proves some higher level than without the refrigeration in the completely researched range of the engine torque change. Therefore despite the application of the EGR equipment of not very complicated design the theoretical assumptions became affirmed to a large degree. However control of recirculation process is not easy and requires the adaptations of regulating parameters (injection advance angle, fuel dose).
