Opis:
This paper describes the analysis and conclusions regarding the use of butanol/biobutanol as a component of conventional mineral fuels employed in different areas of transportation. Butanol from biomass - biobutanol is interesting as biocomponent of gasoline, diesel fuel as well as aviation fuels. This is especially important in case of air transport, which is the carbon dioxide emission source of the fastest growth. Biobutanol is tested as biocomponent of gasoline, including aviation ones, but there are no information about biobutanol added to mineral Jet fuel as well as diesel fuel. Direction of research conducted by leading aviation companies indicates that hydrocarbon biocomponent will be main biofuel used as aviation turbine fuel. One of reported technology is focused on use of butane-1-ol as semi-finished products for isoparaffinic hydrocarbons generation that then would be used for aviation turbine fuels production. In order to do such analysis the preliminary lab testing of blends of butanol isomers with aviation fuel Jet A-1 and diesel fuel were performed. The paper contains the results of standard tests for blends of mineral fuels with butane-1-ol and butane-2-ol added in concentration of 0-20 %(V/V). Both the advantages and disadvantages regarding the use of such component of mineral fuels are presented. Butanol decreases value of flash point and significantly influence on conductivity of Jet fuel. In case of aviation fuel for turbine engines, and diesel fuel, the restrictions regarding direct use of butanol are important. However, butanol can be treated as semi-finished material for synthesizing of biohydrocarbons used in above applications.

Opis:
Vegetable oils are being increasingly used as fuel in diesel engines in passenger vehicles, with various results. One of the associated problems is excessive emissions of organic compounds at very low engine loads. Aside from an undesirable increase in emissions, such compounds also contribute to the formation of deposits in the engine and in the catalytic reactor. In this study, a typical turbodiesel engine, adapted for operation on vegetable oils, was fitted with fast-response in-cylinder pressure measurement system. The engine was operated on an engine dynamometer at low loads typical for urban driving at several coolant and fuel temperatures. Results will be presented and discussed. Engine and rapeseed oil fuelling system setup, comparison of combustion timing of diesel fuel and rapeseed oil, indicated in-cylinder pressure for diesel fuel and rapeseed oil for different speeds and loads, indicated in-cylinder pressure at original and modified injection timing, comparison of nox and CO2 concentrations at original injection timing, emissions from rapeseed oil relative to diesel fuel at different speeds and loads, effect of injection timing optimization on peak indicated pressure, effect of injection timing optimization on nox and CO concentrations, Brake-specific fuel consumption, are presented in the paper.

Opis:
Określono wpływ powietrza, światła słonecznego, oddziaływania ciepła i obecności wody na zmianę liczby kwasowej, lepkości kinematycznej i parametrów niskotemperaturowych paliw (temperatury mętnienia, temperatury zablokowania zimnego filtru i temperatury płynięcia). Schemat starzenia próbek paliw, wpływ czasu i warunków starzenia na zmianę liczby kwasowej próbek badanych paliw, temperatura zablokowania zimnego filtru TZZF próbek paliw starzonych w różnych warunkach w ciągu 60 tygodni są zilustrowane w artykule. Stwierdzono, że najbardziej podatny na starzenie były estry metylowe oleju rzepakowego (RME) i bazowy hydrorafinowany olej napędowy. W rezultacie starzenia następuje bardzo duży przyrost liczby kwasowej, małe zmiany lepkości kinematycznej i bardzo małe zmiany parametrów niskotemperaturowych (temperatury mętnienia, temperatury zablokowania zimnego filtru i temperatury płynięcia) estrów metylowych oleju rzepakowego (RME). Najintensywniejsze starzenie estrów metylowych oleju rzepakowego (RME) powodują wymuszenia cieplne. Obecność wody intensyfikuje starzenie estrów metylowych oleju rzepakowego (RME), szczególnie przy długim czasie kontaktu.
The paper presents the results of laboratory investigations of aging processes of the biodiesel such as rapeseed oil methylesters (RME) and their blends with hydrofining based diesel fuels. The influence of air, light, elevated temperature and the presence of water on the total acid number, kinematic viscosity at 40°C and low-temperature parameters (Cloud Point, Cold Filter Plugging Point and Pour Point) of the fuels was determined. The aging of fuel samples, acid number as a function of time and conditions of aging for evaluated samples of fuels, and Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) of fuel samples aging at different conditions during 60 weeks are illustrated in the paper. The least resistance to aging of rapeseed oil methylesters (RME) and hydrofining based diesel fuel was obtained. The aging influence dramatic increase in total acid number, little changes of the kinematic viscosity at 40°C and least changes of low-temperature parameters (Cloud Point, Cold Filter Plugging Point and Pour Point) of rapeseed oil methylesters (RME). The elevated temperature causes the largest impact on aging of rapeseed oil methylesters(RME). The aging of rapeseed oil methylesters (RME) is intensified in presence of water especially for long time of contact.

Opis:
This paper presents a novel way of utilizing alcohols as fuels for a diesel engine. It is proposed to use heavy alcohols as a mix with vegetable oils and conventional diesel fuel. It is presented the another way to use alcohols. Namely, the use of heavy alcohols as a solvent for vegetable oil (named the biomix or BM) and after the obtainment of the thickness, which would be approximate to diesel fuel, mixing the biomix with diesel fuel to obtained biomix diesel (BMD). This solution will be shown for example with butanol as heavy alcohol, rape oil as vegetable oil and conventional diesel fuel. The investigations are carried out with a simple diesel engine on the engine test bed. Main parameters of engine (power output, torque, specifically fuel consumption) and the main exhaust gas component (in this case CO, NOx, PM) will be investigated. There were better results achieved than one expected. Opposed to existing experiences, the maximum of power output and the torque of engine are higher in the whole range of the rotatory speed of the engine crankshaft when the engine biomix diesel (BMD) is reinforced. The addition of the component biomix to fuel influences the specific fuel consumption. Generally with the larger part of the component biomix the specific fuel consumption grows. Because the power of engine also grows up one should expect that in exploitation the specific fuel consumption should not increase. Transestrification process in the proposed solution does not appear. This has large economic meaning. The investment amount (the transestrification plant) is not necessary. The power consumption to get fuel is lower. Vegetable oils are fully used (glycerine is not produced). BMD has stable parameters. The usage of existing infrastructure to this transportation is enough. Very important is that this fuel could be used to reinforce old, existing now and the future diesel engines. The production of butanol is known. It will be interesting to use for the production an electrolysis process, especially in the proposed new plant where the electrolysis process is connected with the process to get the electrical energy from byproducts of electrolysis (i.e. hydrogen and oxygen) in the fuel cell. It seems to be more efficient. The possibility to get butanol from ethanol gives a very good perspective for the use of ethanol from today's overproduction and moreover without the essential change of infrastructure.

It is oblivious, various properties of fuels cause different thermal loads of engines. Question is, how big is this effect and what fuel compound and its property play insignificant part. This paper is focused on problem of quality of diesel commercial fuels in Polish market and it is a challenge to find answer for question mentioned above. The academic staff from Wroclaw University of Technology organized tests with different commercial fuels. Chemical and physical properties of these fuels were studied and used for investigation to define relationships between them and thermal load during simulation process. All researches were done in the lab of Division of Motor Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engines at the Wroclaw University of Technology. Tests have showed differences in chemical and physical properties of fuels, but there is no statistics effect on engine parameters. Results have not also pointed any important differences in thermal loads of engine VW1,9 TDI and its components according to different physical and chemical properties of tested fuels. It is probably because there are differences of calorific values from one side but from other hands various density and specific fuel consumption compensated these differences. To burn unit of fuel contains higher level of oxygen, engine needs lower amount of air, so it gives, for the same fuelling system, lean mixture. It causes higher temperature of exhaust gases and a bit higher exhaust losses

Opis:
The development of motorisation involves using bigger amounts of fuels. These fuels are, until now, mainly petroleum. However, the fuels of bio origin must be used as well. It follows from the necessity of ensuring CO2 balance and from the fact that oil sources sooner or later will become exploited. Not less important is the fact that, principally, it is difficult to change the proportions of petrol and diesel oil extracted from crude oil, and the use of diesel oil increases proportionally faster than petrol. Therefore, it is necessary to use bio additives in diesel oil. One of such additives is dense alcohols. The aim of the present work is to determine the energy balance of diesel engine powered by diesel oil and butanol mixture. The work field includes making of energy balance of the engine in its characteristic points responsive 13 phase ESC test as well as determining on this basis the consolidated values concerning the differences in the engine energy balance. It has been proved, that powering the engine by mineral diesel oil with doped butanol (20% v/v) does not lead to essential differences in the energy balance of the engine- which does not mean, that the essential differences are absent in the particular characteristic points of the engine. It requires more detailed explanation (in the further research works) because losses in the combustion process do not show differences, but in the other balance components the differences are shown.

The paper presents a test of a self-ignition engine equipped with high-pressure fuel-dosing system based on injection units with electronic control system. The engine was fuelled with conventional fuel and few kinds of non-converted vegetable oil. The analysis of the experiment results correlated with knowledge of their properties shows the important conclusions about possibilities, disadvantages and perspectives of the fuels usage in contemporary engines equipped with electronic control fuel-dosing system. The vegetable oils have a special place in history of automotive industry. In 1900 a great event on Word Trades in Paris was compression-ignition engine fuelled by groundnuts oil — a masterpiece of no one else like Rudolf Diesel. R. Diesel, aware of conventional fuels limitation, patented in 1892 a vegetable oil as a fuel. The NOx concentration in exhaust was measuredfor maximum engine speed (1900 rpm). The lowest emission ofmeasured compounds was observed in case of sunflower oil and rape oil "Biedronka" (65% and 75% of emission during engine work fuelled by conventional diesel oil). The highest values were detected for post frying palm oil and rape oil "Aldi" (120% of emission during engine work fuelled by conventional diesel oil).

At the moment, there is a growing interest in low-power generating units in dispersed system. The production of energy in small units located in the vicinity of the energy recipients offers considerable benefits. First and foremost, it lowers the cost of energy production and the cost of its transfer and also makes the recipient independent from the domestic supplier. Small cogeneration aggregates will facilitate the use of energy from dispersed renewable resources. Gas self-ignition engines in cogeneration system powered with biofuels can be used in construction industry as ecological sources of heat and electrical energy, limiting the need for fossil fuels. This paper presents the possibility of using alternative fuels for internal combustion engines. It describes the possibility of using liquid biofuels separately or natural gas fuel to power diesel engines in dual fuel system. The conception of supplying low-power generator with diesel engine with natural gas to a dose of liquid biofuels test case. Pointed to the factors determining the desirability of a particular concept. Indicated the modification of the engine power to supply the natural gas generator with a dose of liquid biofuels. New technologies of extracting and using biofuels and alternative fuels are being introduced and developed for generating heat and electric energy. Studies on the use of gas and liquid alternative fuels are directly linked to research on the production of renewable and alternative energy as well as environment protection by minimizing emissions of toxic substances into the atmosphere.

Following the modern fuel market, one can notice that prices of liquid petroleum derivatives - petrol and diesel oil - which most often fuel piston internal combustion engines are increasingly higher. Similarly, the price of petroleum-derivative gas (LPG - the liquefied petroleum gas - simply speaking, a mixture of propane and butane) is also growing. Many academic and industrial institutions of science conduct research to determine whether it is possible to replace liquid petroleum-derivative fuels with some other potentially cheaper ones. It would also be beneficial if these new fuels were more "ecological" - so that their combustion products would not be harmful for the environment and if they were produced with the use of plants. Fuel stations commonly offer a fuel for diesel engines which is a mixture of fatty acids methyl esters (FAMEs) from vegetable oils, in Poland for instance from rape seeds. The paper presents a comparison of selected operating parameters of the Hatz 1B40 engine fuelled with mixtures of diesel oil or liquid bio-fuel and natural gas. Indicator diagrams, exhaust gases composition and vibration signals recorded on the engine body were analyzed. The study was conducted on the Hatz 1B40 diesel engine which is used among others in FOGO power generator sets, after replacing the original feeding system by common rail system for liquid fuels and after adding natural gas feeding system.

The types and action mechanism of depressant additions, which improves the properties of diesel fuels in low temperatures, were presented. The results of a sixteen different depressants influence on cloud point (CP) and cold filter plugging point (CFPP) of diesel fuels ONA without additions are given in following elaborate. The depressants were applied to samples of diesel fuel in concentration between 500 and 5000 ppm. The present paper shows correlation of diesel fuels ONA CFPP and ΔCFPP depression between depressants concentration. Only a part from the tested depressant additions has a significant impact on diesel fuel cloud filter plugging point at concentration recommended by their manufacturers. Moreover, some of the additions do not decrease the CFPP value. The depressants can be divided into three groups by their effectiveness: first, the ones which decreases greatly the CFPP (from 3 to 11 degrees) by adding only small amount of them (500 ppm), second, with almost no influence on CFPP values in smaller amounts (500 ppm) but reducing CFPP values in larger quantities (to 5000 ppm), third, with no influence on diesel fuels ONA CFPP even in large concentration. In conclusion, lowering the CFPP value depends on the kind of depressant and its concentration in diesel fuel and not on the diesel hydrocarbon composition with addition up to 7% of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME).

Reaching of high parameters of a drive unit and low pollution of the natural environment is considered to be the most desired effect of motorization. The use of the additive in the form of fatty acid methyl esters to the diesel oil, assumes lowering of harmful fuel gases’ emission and reaching high operating parameters of an engine, such as power and turning moment. Studies on the power output and the turning moment of an engine with self-ignition are presented in the study. The subject matter of the studies was a combustion engine with self-ignition of the power of 80 kW with the direct common rail system and turbo-compressor’s supercharging and with electromagnetic injectors. The tested engine was powered with diesel oil and the mixture of fatty acid methyl esters and the diesel fuel, in proportions 10%, 30% and 50% with an improver, at the standard settings of the fuel injection controllers. The vehicle used for the testing purposes, has been singled out with respect to the specific features, such as: universality of its use as a means of transportation and the opportunity of modification of the injection parameters, resistance to possible unfavourable consequences resulting from the use of the fuel mixture. The studies were conducted on a chassis test house, at full engine’s loading. The vehicle placed on the test house’s rollers, was strapped with belts to the foundation, and then accelerated up to the specific speed and subjected to loading standing in place. In such a manner, the road conditions were simulated. The obtained results of the tests were subject to the statistical analysis. From their analysis it results, that application of the mixture lowers the engine’s parameters to a degree unnoticeable at the time of its operation.

The increasing global energy demand and the decreasing fossil-energy resources are enhancing the interest in the combustion characteristics of alternative fuels for diesel engines. Alternative-fuel combustion has been studied in detail in light-duty diesel engines, even if the comparison of test results from different chemical nature fuels obtained by integrated optical methodologies is lacking. Thus, it is the primary objective of the present study to characterize the combustion of selected alternative fuels in an optical common rail compression ignition engine by high-speed luminescence imaging and natural emission spectroscopy. The effects of the fuels on in-cylinder spray combustion and soot formation were investigated through UV-visible digital imaging and natural emission spectroscopy. Experiments were performed in a single cylinder high swirl compression ignition engine. The test engine was optically accessible and equipped with a common rail multi-jets injection system. Several injection pressures and timings at two EGR rates were tested. Digital imaging allowed characterizing the evaporating spray and the combustion process. UV-visible emission spectroscopy was used to follow the evolution of the combustion process chemical markers. Chemiluminescence signal due to OH was identified. The soot spectral feature in the visible wavelength range was correlated to soot engine out emissions. Conventional and optical data related to diesel fuel blended with gasoline and butanol were compared.

Paper presents an experimental study on the pressure variations inside of 3 - cylinder, a direct injection AD3.152 type diesel engine. The main aim of the preliminary engine test was to use of the crankshaft free acceleration method for detection of diesel knock phenomenon. For this research, each combustion chamber was equipped with AVL cooled pressure sensor mountedat the top of engine head. Using of such sensors and special prepared at Technical University of Radom data acquisition system allow to record time histories of in-cylinder pressure variations at conditions of free acceleration of the engine crankshaft. Results presented in this paper show, that such transient engine conditions can be successfully used for detection of diesel knock phenomenon. High frequency pressure oscillations, typical for knocking were observed in the first phase of the acceleration process for selected combustion chambers. Experimental tests have been done for engine fuelled with regular diesel oil (DF) and its blend with Ethyl Tert Butyl Ether (ETBE) used as an oxygenated additive. Engine test procedure, used methodology and data acquisition system and engine test results carried out in non-stationary conditions with using of crankshaft acceleration method are presented in the paper.
