Opis:
In this paper were presented results of preliminary research of the fault diagnosis of natural gas engine-driven compressor by vibration analysis. Natural gas engine-driven compressors are heavily exploited during delivering natural gas to the transmission network of Poland. Every failure brings about interferences to gas system, furthermore it causes notably cost of maintenances. The major failures are piston seizures and overly level of vibration causes by exceedingly wear, an unbalanced engine after repairs and dry friction. During research investigated three natural gas engine-driven compressors. Acceleration of engine cylinders was measured in cylinder axis and perpendicularly axis and acceleration of compressor cylinders, engine fundament and gas receiver in three axes. Results obtain during investigation of engine cylinders one gas engine-driven compressor collates with results of validation of engine cylinders after their stripping. Preliminary results of investigation indicate proper trend to set up diagnostic symptoms. It was found that for increasing of information amount is necessary to carry out synchronous measurements and its envelops in domain of crankshaft rotation angle. Very important source of diagnostic information can be shaft acceleration, determined basing on existing system of signals generation. The investigation is to be continued.

This paper describes the problem of improvement in environment protection by application "environment friendly" fuel natural gas for ship propulsion. In thepaper the most suitable type of ship main propulsion system using natural gas was take into consideration. Propulsion using Iow speed diesel engine, medium speed diesel engine, steam turbine and combined systems were taken into consideration. As a result of analysis it was affirmed that COGES (Combined Gas Turbine and Steam Turbine Integrated Electric Drive System) is the most suitable propulsion plant to be fed with natural gas in contrary to ship diesel engines which adaptation to natural gas use still is in initial condition. COGES type propulsion plant consists in thermodynamic join of gas turbines and steam turbines. Ali turbines drive generators ofmain ship power station supplying simultaneously electric power to ship main propulsion electric motors and to ship electric network as well. It is suggested to use natural gas as fuel for gas turbines. Steam turbines are driven by steam produced in boilers warmed by gas turbines exhaust gases. This way a high efficiency of ship propulsion is obtained. The simplest source of natural gas is cargo carried by LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carriers. The preliminary project of such a carrier fuel system is presented in the paper. In addition conditions of application, advantages and disadvantages of natural gas fuel system are discussed.

Opis:
The paper characterises the current state of development and use of equipment and monitoring-diagnostic systems of engine cylinders and reciprocating compressors. It has presented a prototype system for monitoring and diagnostics of motor compressors of GMVH type natural gas installed in the Krio Company in Odolanów. The system monitors on-line 5 stands of motor compressors. Simultaneously 12 engine cylinders and 6 compressor cylinders of each motor compressor are indicated - a total of 90 cylinders. Driven by the need to reduce the number of monitors in the control room, aprinciple to operate the system through one monitor with the capability of immediate switching-off of a monitored motor compressor has been adopted. A charts menu provides for simultaneous on-line observation of the work of all the cylinders of a selected motor compressor. For each cylinder of both engine and compressor, against the background of the average from 16 runs and average for the cylinder's unit there are presented a few indicator diagrams, which allows for observation of the variability of a cylinder 's work, which in a spark-ignition engines can be significant. Values of main parameters ofthe cylinder's work are presented in tables and bar charts. These include: the maximum pressure of combustion and compression as well as average indicated pressures. The indicated powers are determined for the engine and compressors and a mechanical efficiency of the unit. The fiber-optic "Optrand" sensors have been used for indication, mainly to meet the need of spark-safety requirements. For the measurement of pressure, 12-bit converter cards ofown construction have been applied. Values of pressure have been sampled with angle axis pulses 0.5° crankshaft rotation. Ethernet connections were applied to transfer data between the pumping station and control room. The study characterises the main conclusions arising from past experience of system use.

This paper presents the experimental results of a spark ignition engine to evaluate its performance and emissions characteristics while using conventional fuel and alternative fuel; compressed natural gas (CNG). To evaluate the performance, the engine is operated between 1500-4000 rpm, under steady state condition with wide open throttle (WOT). The emissions test was performed with various constant loads at each speed. The first experiment is did by using conventional fuel and followed by CNG. The engine performance and emissions results such as brake power, brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), CO, HC and NOx from CNG were measured and compared to conventional fuel. The experiment has performed at Automotive Laboratory Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University Malaysia Pahang by using in-housed developed engine test rig. From the experiment being done it is demonstrated that the potential of reducing emissions while applying CNG as fuel is obvious. However, the further study of required improving the performance of the engine. The results and analysis will be useful for the development of dedicated CNG engine in the future. The application of CNG as fuel for spark ignition engine gives the average reduction power of 25% at WOT, 45% at POT and gives the average brake power reduction of 37% at WOT and 56% at POT base from spark ignition engine. Average BSFC of CNG are near about 33% higher than gasoline for WOT and 39% higher than gasoline for POT. The average CO emission reduction is reduction is 66% at WOT and 64% at POT. The average reduction of CO2 emission at WOT while using CNG is 6% and at POT only 1%. The average reduction of HC emission at WOT is 76% and at POT is 74%. The average reduction of NOx emission at WOT is 15% and at POT is 18%. The disadvantages of CNG as fuel in spark ignition engine has reduced power 37-56%, but the advantages for environment protection CNG as fuel has reduced the exhaust gas emissions.

The paper presents results of studies on the dual fuel engine equipped with the Common Rail high pressure injection system and low pressure natural gas injection into the inlet collector. Impact of some regulation parameters of the feed system on the engine performance parameters was examined. Research of the pilot dose selection showed that the minimal size of the dose was limited to ca 12+13% of the nominal dose. It is a result of some troubles of the electromagnetic injector operation at short times of control. The effect of that is a notable deterioration of smoothness of the engine operation. However, electronic control of the injector opening timing enables to reduce the pilot dose size as the engine load is reduced. The research showed advantageous impact of the decreasing dose on the engine efficiency and exhaust gas toxicity at partial loads of the engine. The tests reconfirmed full usefulness of the system to combustion process optimization. A delay of the injection start at high engine loads enables to reduce nearly twice the NOx concentration in exhaust gas with insignificant decreasing, some 1+1.5%, of its efficiency. The used systems showed their high suitability to control charge quality in dual fuel engines, in traction applications in particular.

The development of human civilisation has always been related to an increase in energy demand. The growth of transportation and an increase in the number of automobile vehicles in service produce a rising demand for fuel. Before piston IC engine is replaced with a different effective power source, it is necessary to use gaseous fuels on a larger scale than ever before. The natural resources of gaseous fuels are estimated to be much higher than crude oil reserves. Additionally, engines can run on biogas, i.e. gaseous renewable fuel. The use of gaseous fuels means lowering the harmful effect engines produce on the natural environment. Multi-fuelling, i.e. switching from one fuel to another, could be an advantageous feature of automobile combustion engine, both from the user’s standpoint and with respect to environmental concerns. Gaseous fuels have desirable properties that are especially suitable for fuel of spark ignition engines. The paper presents the engine test bench constructed at the Laboratory of Heat Engines of the Kielce University of Technology. The test stand comprises modern spark ignition engine Fiat 0.9 MultiAir and the eddy-current brake. At the test stand, the engine was converted to fuelling with three fuels, namely petrol, LPG gas blends and compressed natural gas (CNG). The engine could run alternatively on the three fuels mentioned above. The stand is equipped with an external unit to control the engine work, which makes it possible to extend the range of the engine investigations.

Opis:
Combustion simulation in SI engine fuelled with unconventional gaseous fuels becomes more necessary in last years. The reason is because the use of e.g. biogases from anaerobic digester process or gasification of biomass to produce "green energy". From the view of energy balance of small CHP units, the SI engine seems to be most efficient appliance as a part of this unit. Through 1D, simulation of in-cylinder pressure a fast prediction of engine performance is possible. In this case, the Mass Fraction Burn (MFB) function can be used. The MFB reflect the amount of fuel burned throughout the combustion process in an internal combustion engine. SI engine combustion simulation by using a Wiebe function to represent the MFB is very often used in a 1D-engine code that allow for fast calculations and a good accuracy of results. This paper deals with calculations of Wiebe function coefficients based on experimental data of four stroke naturally aspirated SI engine fuelled with natural gas and simulated producer gas. The Wiebe function parameters are determined over a range of fuel compositions and air excess ratio by fitting the Wiebe function curve to the experimentally obtained MFB data from a single-zone Heat Release Rate (HRR) analysis.

Opis:
It is important to increase thermal efficiency in a spark-ignition engine for reducing carbon dioxide gas in exhaust emissions. One of the solutions is to increase the compression ratio of the engine. Then, knock is a barrier in increasing in compression ratio because of higher pressure and unburned gas temperature in the end gas region. Therefore, there have been many studies on knock. However, there was an interesting phenomenon under some conditions in a gas engine. There is no pressure oscillation in the end stage of combustion and rate of heat release increased. It is considered that the auto-ignition in the end gas region occurs without knock. In this study, the combustion behavior in the end gas region was visualized with an ultra-high-speed camera. In normal combustion case, the flame propagates in the end gas region. In the knock case, the auto-ignited part burns suddenly and leads pressure oscillation. Under the critical conditions, some shows knock and some shows normal flame propagation. However, in some cases, even if auto-ignition occurs, pressure wave is not produced. Then there is no pressure oscillation, that is, mild auto-ignition without knock can be confirmed. And the rate of heat release shows two peaks. The first peak is due to flame propagation and the second peak is due to auto-ignition in the end gas region. The combustion near the end stage become short and thermal efficiency is expected to be increased because of increase in degree of constant-volume.

Opis:
It was presented the possibilities and ways of methane transport by sea. They are still searched new better possibilities of methane transport especially when the gas mining is at the sea. The advantages of using methane as marine fuel are discussed because it seems to be ecological and cheaper one. The lack of LNG bunkering network for vessels is the biggest problem to share methane as a marine fuel. Only a few ports inside the Baltic Sea area give such possibility. Of course, the network is under construction but the development goes too slowly to fulfil the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements on 2020 year. A challenge is to prevent failure during cargo operations, loading hose failure, pipe rupture, manifold leak, tank overflowing, or rupture etc. The risk of failure is increased due to very low temperature of liquid methane and the quick temperature change of all elements of cargo system during operations. The aim of the work was to show the indicated problems of vessel’s fuelling by LNG. It was discussed the methane slip during cargo operations and fuelling. The misfires during burning processes into the engines are the biggest problem due to very narrow window of methane self-ignition. It happens the misfiring or knocking cycles. It disturbs the correct work of the engine, resulting in quick engine malfunction or damage.

A compression ignition engine fuelled simultaneously with two fuels: a fuel with low cetane number used as the main fuel, and Diesel oil used to initiation of ignition, is assumed to be called as a dual fuel engine. This system is perfectly suited to adaptation to supply of CNG gas in majority of compression ignition engines. Such adaptations can concern both an older engine equipped with classic injection system, and modern engine with common rail system. In traction engines, interchangeability of liquid fuel by the gas belongs to important issues, what is a condition of profitability of the adaptation and operation of dual fuel engines. In the paper are presented test results of the 1CA90 engine with piston pump to injection of liquid fuel, and a system with mixer to supply of the gas; and the SB3.1 engine equipped with common rail system and injection of the gas in area of the inlet valve. On the base of performed tests one has shown variability of energetic fraction of the CNG gas in total energy supplied to the engine. The tests were performed in complete field of variability of engine parameters, i.e. rotational speed and engine load. Obtained results have shown that in spite of decreasing fraction of the gas at partial loads of medium size traction engines, substantial reduction of operational consumption of the Diesel oil is possible. Due to significant differences in price of the CNG gas and the Diesel oil, it gives considerable savings in operational costs of the engines. It should encourage users of the engines to adaptation of the fuelling to the CNG gas. In the paper is presented a proposal of control system to dual fuel traction engine, from maintaining its performance parameters point of view.

The paper presents the consequences of LNG usage as a marine fuel. The restrictions of harmful substances emission to atmosphere from marine engines, especially in controlled emission areas (ECA and SECA areas) of nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides, forces the engine makers to use additional installations, which operation may fulfill the purification requirements of exhaust gases. The option is a usage gaseous fuels, especially liquid natural gas (LNG) or compressed natural gas (CNG). There is no an alternative – only gaseous fuels may fulfill the Tier3 level without exhaust gases purification process. In prognosis about 650 ships (in high scenario about 2000) will be fuelled LNG in the year 2025. It was written why the liquid fuels stay unattractive. The basic problem is still the limited network of LNG distribution in ports and the lack of small vessels or barges for LNG bunkering. The proposition of design of LNG tank and barges were presented. The next problem is a deficiency of LNG bunker port in deep sea before entering the ECA areas. The controlled emission areas will extend in the near future. The LNG or CNG seemed to be the preferring fuel in industry due to CO2 emission limits and environmental taxes. The demand for LNG in prognosis to 2025 in bunker ports varies 0.1-18% of total fuel bunker depending on legislation and low or high case, in base case it will be 3%. It depends on the conviction of ship-owners that is no return from transition to the LNG or CNG ship fuelling. The examples to LNG ship conversion were described.

It was presented the ways of methane leakages during transport by sea. Due to greenhouse (GH), effect of carbon dioxide on atmosphere it was mentioned the carbon cycle on the Earth. Carbon dioxide is the main GH gas and it was indicated the change of concentration during last sixty years. It was increased about 30%. The possible methane leakages from vessels may increase the total GH effect due to high Global Warming Potential (GWP) of methane and other hydrocarbons. The carbon dioxide emission from engines is about 30% lower that from liquid marine fuels (diesel oils and heavy fuels). The liquefied natural gas (LNG) or compressed natural gas (CNG) seems to be a good ecological marine fuel. Due to methane leakages estimated on the level of 1-10% from mining to burning in the engines and the GWP on the level about 72-84 the look on methane as ecological fuel may change. It was calculated the equivalent effect (additional effect) of using methane as a marine fuel. Methane leakage on the level of 1-2.5% is equivalent to the same warming effect to the atmosphere as using popular marine diesel oils. Therefore, the leakage of methane during all operations should be as small as possible. In many cases, it is a serious problem for calculating the real leakages so they may be only estimated.

This paper presents issues concerning the selection of spark plugs for engines fuelled with natural gas. There are discussed the specific conditions for proper ignition and combustion o f natural gas in SI engine. The new model of spark plug for ignition of natural gas-air mixture was designed and manufactured in collaboration with Iskra Zakłady Precyzyjne Sp. z o. o. from Kielce. The way of assessing of the performance of the new spark plug after test operation in a bus after 10 thousand km, 15 thousand km and 30 thousand km is presented. These tests allow preparing mass production of spark plugs for professional ignition system for SI engines fuelled with natural gas. New spark plugs will provide a longer service life compared to previously used. They also make it possible to eliminate the extinction of the arc between the electrodes and an electrical misfire in subsequent cycles of engine operation. As a consequence, fuel consumption reduction and reduction of emissions of unburned hydrocarbons into the atmosphere is expected. Apositive effect of the application of new spark plugs can be also longer engine service life. The introduction of the new spark plugs contributes to fulfil the strategy elaborated by EU which foresees the effective use ofalternativefuels, especially natur al gas which is good alternative for gasoline and diesel oil because of possibility of fulfilment of European emission and noise standards.

Due to finishing of conventional fossil energy resources, energy security, the desire of independence from imported fuels and reduction of emission of harmful compounds and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, there is need to explore new technologies using alternative energy sources. One of alternative energy sources, which can be used in transportation, is natural gas. Natural gas can be use in two forms: as a gas (CNG – Compressed Natural Gas), and as a liquid (LNG - Liquefied Natural Gas). Currently the most often used is CNG fuel. The vehicles, which can be supplied by CNG or LNG fuels are called Natural Gas Vehicles (NGV). The article presents the basic properties of liquefied natural gas (LNG) used as a fuel for internal combustion engines. There were made the comparison of the characteristics of CNG, LNG and diesel oil as an engine fuels in different aspects. There was presented the measurement method and measurement equipment applied in the Motor Transport Institute, used to measure the fuel consumption of LNG bus in real traffic conditions in comparison to bus, supplied by diesel oil. The results of measurements in SORT tests were presented and compared with fuel consumption of similar buses fuelled with diesel fuel.
