Opis:
Application of active coating inside of an self-ignition engine may have an important impact on several stages of combustion process: fuel cracking, fore-flame phase, combustion phase and secondary combustion phase [7]. Investigations of such construction are very rare in the literature - especially of hydrocarbons emission. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic effect on humans [2, 6, 7]. One of the most important anthropogenic sources of these substances is motorization (especially diesel engines). The paper presents results of measurements of PAHs emissions from SB3.1 self-ignition engine with Pt active coating application inside. The catalyst was applied on engine valves surface. Zirconium ceramic was chosen as a coating for catalyst application (also because of its thermo-insulating properties). Because of unstable parameters of self-ignition engine work (pressure and temperature jumps), PAHs were extracted from two phases: gas phase and solid phase (particle matter - PM). A chromatographic method of PAHs identification and analysis, because of their low level of concentration in exhaust gases, needed to be supported by sample purification and enrichment stages [40]. It has been found that a significant decrease of total toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentration in engine exhaust gases for engine with Pt catalyst application. The catalyst application causes also changes in relative concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

The volatile organic compounds (VOC's) are significant group o air pollution emitted during fuel combustion in diesel engines. This research work is continuation of research where the influence of an inert catalyst on toxic emission from a self-ignition engine has been investigated. In particular volatile organic compounds VOC's emissions which are known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic properties, have been studied. The experimental results show that implementation of catalytic coating on chosen elements of diesel engine causes change of percentage participation of particular compounds in their sum and decrease of their concentration. The analysis of chosen compounds (benzene and formaldehyde) shows that the modification which was proposed causes increase of concentration of those substances when engine works in specific conditions, what is connected with change of engine exhaust toxicity and decrease in PAHs concentration, what is connected with toxicity decrease in exhaust gases. In particularly research work stand, the comparison of total VOC's concentration with and without catalytic coating, the comparison of benzene concentration, the comparison of formaldehyde concentration, the comparison of toxicity level with and without catalytic coating are presented in the paper.

Opis:
One of the main anthropogenic sources of PAHs emission is motorization, especially compression ignition engines. The researches of International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) proved that some compounds from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons group are toxic for live organisms and cause damages of adrenal glands, lymphatic, circulation and respiratory systems. Because of carcinogenic properties and common occurrence in human environment benzo(a)pirene has been accepted as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons indicator. In relation to benzo(a)pirene, Nisbet and LaGoy determined relative carcinogenic coefficients (RCC) for individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The paper presents results of analysis of PAHs RCC emitted from SB3.1 self-ignition engine with Pt active coating application inside. The catalyst was applied on engine valves surface. Zirconium ceramic was chosen as a coating for catalyst application (also because of its thermo-isolating properties). It has been found that implementation of catalytic coating on valves of the engine causes decrease of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentration in exhaust gases, what results in decrease (in most cases) of the sum of relative carcinogenic coefficient of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

In this research work the influence of an inert catalyst on toxic emission from a self-ignition engine has been investigated. The experimental results show that implementation of catalytic coating on chosen elements of diesel engine causes decrease in pahs concentration, what is connected with toxicity decrease in exhaust gases. The inert catalyst application (active coating on research engine glow plugs) is very advantageous for decrease of total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pahs) concentration in engine exhaust gases, especially on idle running. The applied modification of engine combustion space causes significant decrease of exhaust toxicity. Because of high effectiveness in pahs concentration and toxicity decrease it is recommended to continue the researches and extend them by various physical-chemical modifications of catalytic layers. The paper research work stand containing engine test house, engine with a break, fuel reservoir, NO, CO and smoke level analyzers, filter, tube with active coal, exhaust gases uptake system and engine control system. The pahs concentration marked in idle running diesel engine in two states of engine work, pahs concentration marked in diesel engine and the total pahs concentration in engine exhaust gases and pahs toxicity in engine exhaust gases for two engine loads are presented in the paper.

Opis:
The paper presents results of transonic flow field visualization over a laminar airfoil in high-speed wind tunnel. Quite recently, considerable attention has been paid to experimental investigations of an interaction between the shock and the boundary layer for aerodynamics applications. The purpose of the paper is to investigate development of the flow separation over laminar airfoil at transonic speeds. In a course of presented studies, the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method was used for instantaneous velocity measurements of flow field in the test section of N-3 Institute of Aviation transonic wind tunnel. The object of the research was a laminar airfoil inclined at various angles. The effect of the varying angle of incidence on the flow filed was investigated. The freestream Mach number was 0.7. The results of the PIV measurements were analysed in order to identify the type of the separation from the measured velocity fields. Three forms of separation for low, medium and high angle of incidence was distinguished. The results are in good agreement with theoretical models reported in the literature. The study showed that application of quantitative flow visualisation technique allowed gaining new insights on the complex phenomenon of transonic flow over airfoil. The results of the presented research can be used for better understanding of the mechanism of the flow separation process in transonic flow over airfoils and fluid structure interactions.

Opis:
The paper presents the application of Computer Aided Engineering software for an investigation of the aerodynamic performance of a small two-engine aircraft. In the presented study, the Computational Fluid Dynamics was applied in order to determine the influence of winglets on the aerodynamic performance of the DA42 Diamond aircraft. The numerical simulations were performed with the use of SolidWorks Flow Simulation software. In order to evaluate the influence of the winglets on the lift and drag force, two configurations of the selected aircraft were modelled: with and without winglets. The results of CFD simulations confirmed a reduction of induced drag caused by wingtips vortices dissipation introduced by winglets. The maximum reduction of the induced drag was achieved at high angles of attack. The authors visualized the structure of vortices in case of wings with and without winglets. A smaller volume of wingtip vortices in case of winglets application can be seen in the pressure distribution and streamline plots. The outcome of the presented work confirms the feasibility of Computer Aided Engineering for the assessment of aerodynamic performance of aircraft. The presented methodology can be used in the process of designing and optimisation of alternative configurations of aircraft. The results of work might prove useful for DA42 DIAMOND pilots and maintenance personnel as well as for educational purposes.

Opis:
The paper presents experimental static tests of IED interrogation arm for Shiba special vehicle. The test was performed by Military University of Technology and Military Institute of Engineer Technology. A number of strain gauges and camera markers were placed on the arm to allow recording strains and movements of specific construction points. The arm's motion was recorded using high speed camera. The equipment used were Vishay EA 06 120LZ 120 strain gauges with ESAM Traveller bridge. The sampling rate was 1000 Hz. The test was to pick up maximum design weight, move it to maximum overhang and then drop it on the ground. During the test, signal from gauges and video capture was recorded. The data was then processed using Thema 3D software to obtain markers displacements and angular changes of both arm parts. Afterwards, the test was repeated for different weight. The analysis showed, that maximum stresses in examined construction parts did not exceed yield stress of material. As well as that, in-depth motion analysis of the arm was conducted. Further works are twofold. Firstly, there will be tests concerning arm under dynamic load occurring during normal maintenance During this test only strains in specific construction parts will be recorded. Secondly, numerical model of an arm will be developed and validated using data obtained during both tests. This will help visualize stress distribution in each arm's part.

The paper presents a modelling procedure of the M-28 Bryza wing with extended flaps and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations results preformed in order to assess the performance of the investigated wing for various flap extension rates. The M-28 Bryza is a two-engine high-wing aircraft used in the Polish Air Force for short distance airlift of people and equipment. The aim of this work was to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of the investigated wing. The CFD simulations were performed in order to investigate the influence of flap extension on lift and drag coefficients at various angles of attack. In order to validate the results of two different commercial CFD packages were used. The findings are presented in the form of flow visualization and aerodynamic characteristics. The typical and non-standard extension rates were investigated for low, moderate and high angles of attack. The results correlated with the limitations specified in the aircraft manual. The outcome of the presented work confirmed the feasibility of the presented methodology for its use as a supportive tool for providing additional information about airplane performance in standard and non-standard conditions of flight such as landing with one engine working. The results of work might prove useful for M-28 Bryza pilots and maintenance personnel as well as for educational purposes.

Opis:
The wing is the main aircraft construction element, whose main task is to produce the lift, balancing the aircraft weight as well as ensuring the execution of all flight states for which the aircraft was designed. The selection of appropriate airfoils or the development of new ones is one of the most important constructions goals. As a rule, constructors aim at ensuring a sufficiently large lift with little aerodynamic drag in order to increase the scope of utility angles of attack and such shaping of these characteristics so that the aircraft performance, close to the critical angles of attack, guarantees an adequate level of safety. One of the methods of improving the aerodynamic properties of airfoils is the Kline-Fogleman modification. It involves an application of a step into the airfoil contour at a place. It enforces the creation of a swirling air stream, preventing the separation and maintaining airflow over the profile and thus the reduction of drags, as well as delaying separation. The use of this type of a solution is justified when designing unmanned aerial vehicles, of small sizes, which move with slow speeds and sometimes-large angles of attack, including those close to critical angels of attack. The Kline-Fogleman modification decreases the likelihood of aircraft stalling. The aim of this work is to present an analysis of airflow over NACA0012 airfoil with Kline-Fogleman modification. The calculations were made by solving the problem of numerical fluid mechanics. For calculations, the Comsol Maribor programme was used. The investigation focused on several different airfoil modifications (KFm-1, KFm-2, KFm-3). This enabled a selection of a solution, providing the most desirable aerodynamic characteristics.

The paper presents experimental test of mine flail structure designed for a prototype of the Shiba special military vehicle. The Shiba vehicle is equipped with such structure to neutralize mine and IED threats which are one of the most harmful weapons used during modern warfare and peacekeeping missions. The experimental test was performed by the Military Institute of Engineer Technology and the Military University of Technology. The test procedure was based on NATO standards. Detonation of 8 kg TNT AT mine under wheel of the prototype was taken into consideration as a case of possible load during mine clearance operation on the battlefield. The test procedure included deformation measurements of selected parts of mine flail structure. During the tests, strain gauges and camera markers were placed on the structure to allow recording of strains and observation of the specific construction point’s movements. The motion was recorded using three high-speed Phantom cameras. Vishay EA-06-120LZ-120 strain gauges with ESAM Traveler bridge with sampling rate 100 kHz were used for strain measurements. The test was performed on military proving ground. As a result, strain versus time plots were obtained. The results were processed using ESAM software. Strain gauges were placed paired in specific structure points. High-speed camera recordings were obtained to visualize the process of structure response. The sequences of selected frames are shown. Pictures of deformed structure are presented.
