The paper presents an attempt to evaluate the wear of piston-cylinder assembly with the aid of vibration signal recorded on spark ignition (SI) engine body. The subject of the study was a four-cylinder combustion engine 1.2 dm3. Diagnosing combustion engines with vibration methods is specifically difficult due to the presence of multiple sources of vibration interfering with the symptoms of damages. Diagnosing engines with vibroacustic methods is difficult also due to the necessity to analyse non-stationary and transient signals [5]. Various methods for selection of usable signal are utilised in the diagnosing process. Changes of the engine technical condition resulting from early stages of wear are difficult to detect for the effect of mechanical defect masking by adaptive engine control systems [3]. According to the studies carried out, it is possible to utilise artificial neural networks for the evaluation of the clearance in piston-cylinder assembly. It was proven that it is possible to set up a properly operating neural classifier able to identify the degree of wear in the piston-cylinder assembly, based on the signal of vibration acceleration in the engine body. Faultless classification was successfully obtained with the use of probabilistic neural network with properly selected value of y coefficient. At the same time, based on the experiments carried out, the crucial role was confirmed for the selection of proper method for pre-treatment of data intended for neural network teaching.

This article presents the results of investigations regarding the use of on-board diagnostic systems to assess the technical state of automotive vehicles, and the possibilities of early fault detecting. The examinations were carried out in order to establishifit is possible to evaluate the level of compatibility between diagnostic test units and on-board diagnostic systems in over three hundred models of vehicles which were produced by different manufactures. The investigations concerning the influence of examination conditions, the type of faults and the vehicle age upon the results and reliability of diagnostic tests were carried out. The suitability of fault codes which were recorded in the memory of diagnostic system while the vehicle was operating have been determined as far as the recognition of the type of faults is concerned. Additionally, the examinations of engine on a test stand were carried out as well. Sensitivity of diagnostic systems was tested regarding the changes of work parameters of the engine. The faults of engine were deliberately provoked and were examined at the early stage by on-board diagnostic systems. The test results show that there is a necessity of elaborating new diagnosing methods enabling to find damages regarding safety in road traffic.

This article presents the attempt to detect the valve faults in the engine by using the vibroacoustic signal registered on the si engine block. the object of the research was 4-cylinder 4-stroke with eight valves 1.3 l SI engine. the vibration energy casedby combustion process depends on the average rotation speed and the crankshaft position. Mechanical faults which are having an impact on combustion pressure and misfire cause temporary changes of the rotational speed and instantaneous energy spectral density. Form the research analyzed it shows that there is apossibility of using artificial neural networks to assess the condition of the valves in the combustion engines. As part of the study, the descriptors calculated on the basis of the vibration acceleration signal registered on the engine block were proposed to serve as the source of information on the engine condition. The results have corroborated effectiveness of using the signal approximation and detail energy, acquired from the discrete wavelet decomposition, as the base for building models of engine operation. the use of a probabilistic neural network with a correctly selected value of coefficient gamma enables obtaining a faultless classification.

This paper considers the results of studies on examination methods in scope of environmental protection such as exhaust emission, fuel consumption and noise emission. The reduction of exhaust gas emission of modern compression and spark ignition engines requires an optimization ofexisting diagnosing methods as well as the investigation of new approaches. The results of car inspections regarding environmental protection for more than four thousand vehicles have been compared to the requirements of ECE regulations and those of particular car producers. Eight hundred cars with a fault of gas emission and fuel consumption were examined in order to define typical damages. The possibilities of diagnosing the damages of mechanical and electrical systems of the engine have been carried out using electrical value measurements and exhaust gases analysis. The test results show that there is a necessity of elaborating new diagnosing methods enabling to find damages regarding exhaust emission and fuel consumption at their initial stage. One of the possible methods which could be applied is the evaluation of the quality of combustion process considering the values of parameters of engine performance coming from the detectors mounted to the engine. The so far carried out examinations have revealed that some mechanical damages of engines such as operating wear or unexpected faults do not make the diagnosing system react to the information.

The roller-bearings are the most widely used appliances of the engine's fittings. The regular use of the roller-bearings leads to their degradation and subsequently to their damage. In extreme situations, the damaged roller-bearing can come to a standstill leading to the engine's failure. As for the maintenance of the engine, it would be crucial to work out the methods of supporting the diagnosis of the engine's fittings and its elements. The methods would enable to determine the condition of measure without the need ofthe disassembly. The vibroacoustic methods present the greatest possibilities in that field. The authors attempted to realize that task for a chosen element of the combustion engine's fittings in a car. The article presents the results ofthe conducted research and the study concerning the diagnosis of the bearing's timing belt tensioner pulley. The investigation was conducted for new roller-bearings as well as damaged. Different values of tension in investigations were applied by timing belt, which were placed for help of instrument PR-20. The accelerations of radial vibrations of screw fixing the tensioner pulley were measured during experiments. The recording of accelerations of vibrations was done for different constant engine speeds. The results ofthe research were analyzed by using software MatLab. The study indicated the measure sensitive to the changes of the technical condition of the tested element. The findings obtained confirm the usefulness of the presented method which in the form of a suitable algorithm may use as the basis for creating a diagnostic device.

Influence of piston skirt clearance on engine noise has been presented in this paper. Traces of forces producing engine block vibrations, i.e. gas force, and piston slap force were estimated and verified with real sampled data. An analysis procedure, using spatial-phase selection has been developed for the analysis of internal combustion engine noise signals. An engine block vibration signal decomposition was also carried on, what enabled the identification of the influence of piston clearance on wavelet factor values C(a,b). It has been proved that increasing piston skirt clearance, delays the response of engine body on piston slap. The diagnostics of the combustion engine with the WA methods is especially difficult for the occurrence of many sources vibrations, what causes mutual disturbing of symptoms of damages. Because in diagnostics process, the different methods of the selection of the useful signal are applied. For estimation of the engine state, the spatial and phase selection have been utilized among other things influence ofpropagation direction of vibrations on the value of symptoms from combustion process and piston slab into the cylinder wall. On the ground of carried experimental research using methods of the signal decomposition in domain of time and frequency, measures of the vibrational signal sensitive on the degree of the waste of the composition the piston-the cylinder have been designated.
W artykule przedstawiono próbę oceny zużycia (stanu) złożenia tłok-cylinder za pomocą sygnału drgań rejestrowanego na kadłubie i głowicy silnika ZS we wzajemnie prostopadłych kierunkach. Obiektem badań był jednocylindrowy silnik spalinowy ZS. Podczas badań oprócz sygnałów przyspieszeń drgań rejestrowano przebieg ciśnienia w komorze spalania oraz położenie GMP. W silniku spalinowym w jego cyklu roboczym pojedyncze zdarzenia występują w określonej sekwencji, a ich powtarzalność w każdym następnym cyklu powoduje, że rejestrowany sygnał drganiowy jest cyklostacjonarny. Diagnostyka silnika spalinowego metodami WA jest szczególnie utrudniona ze względu na występowanie wielu źródeł drgań, co powoduje wzajemne zakłócanie symptomów uszkodzeń. Dlatego w procesie diagnozowania stosuje się różne metody selekcji sygnału użytecznego. W pracy do oceny stanu silnika wykorzystano selekcję przestrzenną i fazową określając m. in. wpływ kierunku propagacji drgań na wartość symptomów wywołanych procesem spalania oraz uderzeniem tłoka w ściankę cylindra. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań eksperymentalnych stosując metody dekompozycji sygnału w dziedzinie czasu i częstotliwości wyznaczono miary sygnału drganiowego wrażliwe na stopień zużycia złożenia tłok-cylinder.

A fault recognition technique for the internal combustion engines using time-frequency representations of vibration signal has been presented in this paper. Engine block vibration results as a sum of many excitations mainly connected with engine speed and their intensity increases with the appearance of a fault or in case ofhigher engine elements wearing. In this paper an application of acceleration signals for the estimation of the influence of piston skirt clearance on diesel engine block vibrations has been described. Engine body accelerations registered for three simulated cases representing piston skirt clearance variations were an object of preliminary analysis. The presented procedures were applied to vibration and pressure signals acquired for a 0.5 dm3 Ruggerini, air cooled diesel engine. reciprocating machines are difficult to diagnose using traditional frequency domain techniques due to the fact they generale transient vibrations. In the experiments that were conducted Gabor Analysis and Adaptive Spectrogram has been chosen The Gabor spectrogram is a powerful tool for on-line monitoring and diagnosis of combustion process. There are important features of the vibration signal that are sensitive to the change of IC engine condition. For that reason the DWT transform was applied. Based on the results, authors propose detection and piston skirt clearance monitoring algorithm.
