Opis:
In the article, review of the literature on the subject currently used methods of controlling or limiting the development of microorganisms in petroleum products was made. The problem of microbial contamination in petroleum products was presented, which is still valid and is becoming more common. In the article, microbiological contaminants present in petroleum products were described. In the following part of the article the various methods of combating microbial contamination in petroleum products, which include physical methods, thermal disinfection and chemical methods were presented. In due to the limited use of physical methods, the article focused on methods widely disseminated. Combating harmful microorganisms using a biocide were described, which due to their harmful effects on beneficial microorganisms and the environment are becoming more and more limited use. Because of their harmful effects on beneficial microorganisms and the environment, their use is becoming more limited. Furthermore, another method of controlling microorganisms during storage of the fuel by means of cleaners that help to eliminate the water, reducing sludge was presented. Apart from the measures to combat microorganisms and additives of cleaning properties, the simplified methods for determining the amount of microorganisms in the fuel using the kits containing the finished substrate suitable for growth of microorganisms are described. These kits allow the monitor the status of microbial petroleum products and thus help prevent many crashes. In the final part of the article authors proposed other ways to control or limit microbial growth are presented. The work conclusions were completed. The most important is that there is a need to develop effective methods of combating microbial contamination of fuels and oils by means of measures environmentally friendly.

Opis:
The paper describes the usability of current test methods employed in fuels for CI engines testing for fuels containing non-petroleum components. The paper describes test results that justify the necessity for test method modification and for establishing new criteria for assessment of such fuels usability. The analysis covered typical courses of friction coefficient and electrical contact potential as film thickness during test. During standard test the wear stages were isolated, and then referenced to actual operation of friction pair in fuel supply system of diesel engine. Test results show that methodology used up to date is not useful. The restriction to standard corrected wear scar diameter (WS 1.4) is not enough for proper interpretation of course and effects of model wear. Moreover, it is impossible to reference to actual operation conditions, which is inconsistent with tribological testing rules. Such rules mean that testing conditions reflect the actual ones as much as possible. Characteristics of test technique using HFRR, discussion on test method usability for testing the modified fuels, lubricity change vs. the increase of concentration of hydrocarbons typical for biohydrocarbons from Fischer-Tropsch process, comparison of changes of friction coefficient and lubrication film thickness for samples are presented in the paper.

Opis:
There has been observed for several years a number of attempts to introduce for everyday use small power units which utilize turbine engine as propulsion unit (the U.S., Japan, and Europe). Efficiency increase of such devices is achieved by improving of turbine engine design as well as utilizing of exhaust gas thermal energy to heat the compressed air supplied to combustion chamber and, for example to heat usable water. Significant orientation of turbine engine improvements lead to the modernization of combustion processes by applying of gaseous fuels (such as compressed natural gas) or implementation of high-temperature catalytic combustion. The purpose of these changes reduction of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides emissions. In Propulsion Department of Aviation Institute a scientific project has been realized, in which the object of study was aircraft turbine engine powered by a liquid propane-butane mixture. The paper presents some results of engine tests carried out, especially concerning feeding system, special fuel system applied LPG pumping systems with the use of sliding-vane pump and by means of pressure reservoir and combustion process of LPG atomized with the use of original GTD-350 vortex injector, adapted for aviation kerosene Jet-A.

Opis:
The subject of marine vessel as a source of the sea pollution was taken because of very adverse impact of petroleum pollutants on the natural environment. Oil pollutions concern especially marine environment. However, petroleum inflows to the sea from many different sources, exploitation of the fleet are one of the significant causes of oil presence in the marine environment. MARPOL Convention requires the states parties thereto to monitor the state of contamination [3] and this is a second reason of taking this subject. During the past years, several tests of petroleum content in the Gulf of Gdansk were made by the Physics Department of Gdynia Maritime University. In total 115 samples of water were collected and analyzed during the period from 2004 to 2009 year in the Gulf of Gdansk, which is an area of intense ships traffic because of two great complexes of harbours located in Gdansk and in Gdynia. These tests were carried out with the help of Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences during cruises of the r.v. “Oceania”. Petroleum concentration in seawater was determined by means of improved fluorescence method. Oil in water concentration ranged from value below of the detection limit, that is 10–9 (less than 1 ppb), up to 3.5ź10–7 (350 ppb). Average concentration of oil was 4.3ź10–8 (43 ppb). Obtained results confirmed that Vistula River could be a source of petroleum pollution of the Gulf of Gdansk. Apart from this, vessels are the significant sources of oil in the seawater too. The most polluted places were founded in the area where ships crossed the Gulf of Gdansk.

The paper presents results of comparative tests of exhaust gases toxicity of GTD-350 turboshaft engine powered by Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and conventional JET-A1 fuel. Structure of GTD-350 engine’s test bed was discussed. Because of explosion danger of LPG vapour the test stand was arranged in the open air. Paper comprises specification of LPG supply system, gas injector’s construction and visualization of LPG injection. The supply system was based on the newly constructed pressurized injectors. Required LPG operating pressure was obtained by pressurizing LPG tank using nitrogen and LPG-flow was controlled using needle valve. A series of photographs presents shape of fuel streams for new injector supplied by JET-A1 and LPG. Photos of flame torches for multi-hole and conical type injectors fuelled by LPG are inserted as well. A comparative study of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide as well as oxygen concentration for GTD-350 equipped with new injectors fuelled by LPG and standard supplied by Jet-A1 was carried out. The study comprised turbocharger speed range between 40 and 80% of NTS. The exhaust gas temperature comparison for above-mentioned configuration is presented as well. All data shown in presented figures are mean of 6 measurements. All completed tests were carried out for standard GTD-350 engine combustion chamber.

Opis:
In the article, changes in the properties of oils during operation were characterized. The main reason for this is the continuous aging process of the used oil caused by the interaction of oxygen contained in the air, which reacts relatively easily with hydrocarbons and the oxidation process is accelerated just by high temperature. Then the problem of microorganisms occurring in petroleum products and their effect on the properties of oils and the operation of the internal combustion engine was presented. The next part of the article presents effective microorganisms, i.e. what they are and how they work, in particular, their composition and appropriate development conditions. In addition, some of their specific applications were briefly described. In the next part of the article, the research methodology, applied oil samples with additives of effective microorganisms, both for fresh oil and used oil were described. In addition, the measuring test stand with instrumentation and measuring device was shown. The main part of the article contains the characteristics of dynamic viscosity as a function of temperature for fresh oil and used oil compared with oils with the addition of microorganisms in liquid form and ceramic tubes. The developed graphs enabled analysis of the effect of the addition of microorganisms on oil viscosity as ecological products.

This paper presents the results of comparative investigations on the lubricity and energetic superficial properties of selected petroleum products and new ionic liquids (ILs). Three base oils from polish petroleum refinery (PAO—6, SN-650, SN—350) and lubricity additive (Additin RC2515 EP) have been investigated comparatively to four ionic liquids with imidazolium organic cations and different inorganic anions, i. e. bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide and tetrafluoroborate. The lubricating ability properties petroleum products and ionic liquids have been assessed according to Polish Standard PN-76/C-04 1 47 (ASTMD2596-69 and ASTM D2270-77) on Four-Ball Testing machine. The investigation range of lubricity properties are limited to the assessment only two parameters i. e. P(t) - seizure load for increasing continuous loading and G(oz) - wear limiting load capacity. The superficial properties of oil compounds and ionic liquids have been assessed by means of modern KSV Sigma 701 Tensiometer. Surface tension o and wetting angle fi were assessed. The obtained results confirmed the possibilities of using tested ionic liquids as lubricants. The best lubricity properties, close to properties of Additin RC2515, had 1—methyl— 3—oktyloxymethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate.

Opis:
The development of human civilisation has always been related to an increase in energy demand. The growth of transportation and an increase in the number of automobile vehicles in service produce a rising demand for fuel. Before piston IC engine is replaced with a different effective power source, it is necessary to use gaseous fuels on a larger scale than ever before. The natural resources of gaseous fuels are estimated to be much higher than crude oil reserves. Additionally, engines can run on biogas, i.e. gaseous renewable fuel. The use of gaseous fuels means lowering the harmful effect engines produce on the natural environment. Multi-fuelling, i.e. switching from one fuel to another, could be an advantageous feature of automobile combustion engine, both from the user’s standpoint and with respect to environmental concerns. Gaseous fuels have desirable properties that are especially suitable for fuel of spark ignition engines. The paper presents the engine test bench constructed at the Laboratory of Heat Engines of the Kielce University of Technology. The test stand comprises modern spark ignition engine Fiat 0.9 MultiAir and the eddy-current brake. At the test stand, the engine was converted to fuelling with three fuels, namely petrol, LPG gas blends and compressed natural gas (CNG). The engine could run alternatively on the three fuels mentioned above. The stand is equipped with an external unit to control the engine work, which makes it possible to extend the range of the engine investigations.

Opis:
A fast and economical approach was used to assess impact of fires, explosions and toxicity for a LPG gas storage facility using Fire Explosion and Chemical (FEC) Indices, the TNT and TNO multi energy methods, which are part of a process hazard analysis study. The assessment identified high consequence events for radiation, toxicity and overpressure due to catastrophic rupture of spheres and bullets holding LPG. The FEC Indices indicated that further investigation was needed to determine the extent of blast overpressure whereas toxicity was not identified as a high consequence. The TNO method was used to assess overpressure for congested volumes and unconfined vapour cloud explosions for a bullet, whereas the TNT method was used to predict overpressure occurring on a sphere with no congestion. The FEC indices can be used to screen for high consequence events in order to save time and identify the level of risk complexity needed for process equipment, whereas the TNO method can be easily applied when determining safety distances from LPG facilities for various building constructions provided that the degree of congestion is known.

The paper presents procedures related to obtaining type approval certification for the installation method of the system adapting a given vehicle type to be powered by LPG and reviews current legislation concerning it. There is also some important information published, regarding installation of the vehicle CNG supply system, and methods of the gas storages. There are admissible values of the exhaust fumes pollutants emission content (emission standards EURO) presented in a tabulated form for comparison and also the information on the elements of LPG supply systems, whose installation on the vehicles is obligatory in order to meet the 67.01. UN-ECE Regulation requirements. Later on the paper presents, in the tabulated form, the number of conformity inspections of the installation method of the system adapting the given vehicle type to be powered by LPG, carried out by the Quality Control Department, and also most important physico-chemical properties offuels as like: CNG, diesel oil, petrol and LPG. At the same time, the essential conclusions are published, of the inspections carried out by Quality Control Department in the establishments dealing with the LPG systems installations, together with the analysis of the discrepancies observed during the inspections. Additionally there is a list of some possible consequences of an improper gas system installation. In the summery of the paper, there is a reference made to the UN-ECE Nr 115 Regulation, whose introduction could regulate the market of the vehicle LPG systems. But to make it binding, all states have to adopt it to their legislations. The most important changes, affecting the parties installing the vehicle LPG systems, that are introduced by the Nr 115 Regulation, are related to obtaining the type approval, as it will be necessary to have gas system type approval certification linked with a particular engine type of a given motor vehicle, i.e. a dedicated system. Obtaining type approval necessitates in the need to meet more stringent technical requirements than the current ones. New type approvals will concern only a narrow group of vehicle, as even within one vehicle make, there will be several type approval certificates.
W artykule opisano procedury związane z uzyskaniem świadectwa homologacji sposobu montażu instalacji przystosowującej dany typ pojazdu do zasilania gazem LPG (propan-butan), dokonano przeglądu obecnie obowiązujących aktów prawnych w omawianym zakresie. Aby Regulamin 115 miał moc wiążącą, poszczególne kraje muszą wprowadzić go do swojego prawodawstwa.
