Opis:
Ground reaction measurement in landing gear laboratory tests is used in order to gain knowledge about loads transferred to the aircraft structure. Ground reaction level is defined during aircraft design phase and it is required not to exceed limit value in real construction. Load from landing affect directly strength of aircraft structure especially mounting points what translates both strength of aircraft structure especially mounting points what translates both on safety and weight of the final design. Meeting the safety requirements is crucial in aviation regulations conformity. Landing gear ground reactions evaluation is performed during laboratory tests in order to meet the compliance with the ground load requirements assumed in design phase. Proper test method is crucial to prove the actual load. One of the methods is landing gear dynamic drop test where landing forces are measured. Force measurement is made in several ways according to test stand construction and test object specifics. In this article, three methods are described due to author’s experience in landing gear tests. Proposed techniques cover two direct and one indirect force measurements. Direct approach is based on strain gauge measurement principle. One is a strain gauge plate fixed to the ground while the second one is based on strain gauges attached to landing gear mounting nodes. Indirect approach is based on the acceleration of the tested object, which by definition is correlated with the force applied to the structure. Obtained test results allow determining the kinetic energy absorbed by landing gear during drop test. In this article author also presented numerical integration of the time history data and compared them with simulation results in order to show equivalence of all three of the test methods and to prove correctness of the test initial conditions determination.

The paper deals with the measurement preparation for the exhaust gases measurement. The measurement is carried out within the project of basic research. The aim of the project is the research of the influence of an unconventional charging intercooling on the selected ecological and economical parameters of a turbocharged compression ignition internal combustion engine in the specific operational conditions. The paper gives the information about the types, numbers, specification and position of the sensors used. The measuring scheme with the connection of sensors and connector blocks is also shown. The details about the single parts of the measuring chain are given. The paper also shows the view on the sensors through the photographs. Some results from a testing measurement are also shown and the results from the selected sensors can be compared. The two different intercoolers are used for charging air cooling. The first intercooler is the air/air type equipped with a ventilator, the second intercooler is the water/air type without a ventilator. The total displacement of an engine is 7.61. The measurement itself is aimed mainly to acquire information regarding the influence of the low temperatures of charging on the amount of NOx. Also the influence on the amount of particulate matter is examined through the mentioned measurement.

Every mechanical construction loses its properties in time due to the usage wear that leads to malfunctions and, in the end, to failure. Widely used method of failure time prediction base on extended laboratory tests where a device is tested against fatigue and wear. This method is well established but is expensive, time-consuming, and costly. Another way of failure prediction is to calculate it using advanced algorithms what is faster and cheaper but less accurate than actual tests. Furthermore, both methods are not optimal due to the principle of operation based on simplified assumptions. In such cases, it is common to make the lifespan of the safety wise devices for example landing gears much less than real in case of fatal failure not covered by the predictions. This can lead to much higher price and maintenance costs of the landing gear. Nowadays the worldwide trend is to monitor the behaviour of the devices in real time and predict failure using actual state. There are several methods of health monitoring, most of them including sensors, acquisition systems and computer software for analysis. In this article, authors describe possible landing gears health monitoring methods based on authors’ laboratory experience in sensor appliance and test data analysis. The authors also present their idea of adding health monitoring to existing landing gears where no dedicated infrastructure was initially designed.

The development of a new combustion engines is connected with endeavour for escalation of the total efficiency. Escalation of the total efficiency can be: minimization of the mechanical losses in the combustion engines or minimization of the unsuitable equipment capacity of accessories. Now research and development programs of a manufacturer of the combustion engines search effectual equipment and method for this escalation of the total efficiency. The escalation of the total efficiency is important for a minimization fuel consumption and consequently for lower emissions. Turn of the combustion engines is used method for measurement of mechanical losses very often. The paper will show choice of the measurement results on the testing bench. The Technical University of Liberec, Department of Vehicles and Engines, has developed a design of a testing bench which would enable the measuring mechanical losses of the combustion engines for different temperatures of cooling water and engine lubrication oil. Each medium (lubrication oil and cooling water) have own circle with automatic temperature regulation. The testing bench has automatic system for change revolution and automatic system for measurement: torque, revolution, temperatures and pressures. The asynchronous motor (company SIEI, type MA 133 K - 62 with power 28 kWI 6000 l/min) is used for drive of combustion engine in the testing bench.

Opis:
Multi-hole probes are simple and robust device to measurement of flow velocity magnitude and direction in wide range of angles of attack – up to 75°. They become popular as they may be easily use to measurement of unknown flow velocity, while optical methods, like PIV or LDA, require some knowledge about the flow for proper setting of measurement devices. Multi-hole probes are also more lasting in comparison with CTA hot-wire probes, which may be damaged by a dust. A multi-hole probe measures air pressure with one pressure tap on its tip and a few (usually 2, 4, 6 or more) taps on conical or semispherical surface of the probe tip. Based on measured pressures, some non-dimensional pressure coefficients are calculated, which are related to flow velocity direction (i.e. two angles in Cartesian or spherical coordinate system) and magnitude. Finding relations between these parameters is relatively complex, which for years was limiting application of multi-hole probes. The article summarizes methods of multi-hole probes calibration and use, which may be classified as nulling and non-nulling methods or – with other criteria – as global and local methods. The probe, which was presented in the article, was the 5-hole straight probe manufactured by Vectoflow GmbH and calibrated in the stand designed and manufactured at the Institute of Aviation. The local interpolation algorithm has been used for calibration, with some modifications aimed on mitigate of mounting uncertainty, which is related with the non-alignment of flow velocity direction and probe axis Results of calibration showed that the accuracy of presented methodology is satisfactory. The standard measurement uncertainty was assessed for 0.2° for the pitch angle and yaw angle, which is better than accuracy declared by the probe’s manufacturer (1.0°). The measurement uncertainty of the flow velocity is approximately 0.12 m/s, similarly like in manufacturer’s data.

In the paper results of conducted in Polish Naval Academy researches aiming to diagnostic using of measurement of engine crankshaft unsteady angular speed measurement will be presented. Similar works were many times started in different research centres. Up to now, adequate accuracy of measurement had not been achieved to make proper diagnostic decision. In commercial field, measurement of unsteady rotation speed has been used only in MAPEX –TV system (Torsional Vibration detector) dedicated to SULZER engines, which up to now without any mistakes detected only the one engine cylinder switch out of work. To the advanced diagnostic system, there are a lot off work to do. For several years in navigation, more often are used optic gyroscopes, which work on the base of Sagnac effect, assuring angular speed measurements, with 0.001 o/h resolution. Such resolution is absolutely higher than needed in piston engines diagnostic, but range of measured rotation speed is much lower than rpm of low speed marine diesel engines. In scope of conducted scientific work, it was decided to build of model of Sagnac interferometer prepared to measure rotational speed in range adequate to medium speed marine diesel engines. At rotational speed, equal 750 rpm 1 mV change in output voltage had been achieved for the difference of 0.4 o/sec of rotational speed. Time of measurement is equal the time, which need light to go through distance of 100 m fibber-optic line. In practice, this method does not introduce any significant phase shifts and does not limit the number of samples per revolution.

The results of measurements of instantaneous pressure in the cylinder are most often inputs tofurther calculations of the characteristic parameters of the working cycle of the engine. Many repetitions of measurements always feature a degree of unrepeatability in registered cycles, making determination of the so called representative round difficult. The paper considers the problem of estimating the minimal number of measurement cycles for the registration of pressure in order to obtain a representative course ofpressure in the cylinder of an compression ignition engine. Maximum pressure was adopted as an indicator of cycle repeatability. After excluding systematic errors, repetition ofmaximum pressures recorded in subseąuent measurement cycles were analyzed for fixed load and rotation speed of the engine, defining the coefficient ofvariation CV. subsequently, for selected states of the engine the representativeness of the average maximum pressure depending on the number of measurement cycles averaged was examined. full evaluation of the accuracy of the indication process in relation to the number of averaged measurement cycles reauires also determination of the so called expanded uncertainty of the measurement's result. Further analysis including determination of the expanded uncertainty of the measurement result revealed that pressure course averaging over 20 consecutive cycles of measurement is sufficient to obtain a representative cycle.

Opis:
The optical head is a linear vehicle speed sensor. Its action is based on image analysis of the moving road surface. A special algorithm converts it on the speed signal. Because the image of a road is analyzed, therefore the change in structure of the road surface causes change of the signal from the optical head. Therefore, for each type of surface, it is necessary to calibrate the optical head. Calibration consists of measuring, using an optical head, the length of the measurement distance, which was previously precisely measured with another reference device. Based on these two values the calibration factor is calculated, and entered afterwards in the optical head control software. This optical head is used in several the road tests, and its speed measurement function is used in the measurement of vehicle acceleration, braking distance, the total vehicle road load. This device, connected to the recorder, is also used in research on motion parameters of vehicle under real driving conditions. During these tests may occur the change of the road surface, therefore it is particularly important to know the influence of road surface structure on the signal from the optical head. This paper presents the results of optical head tests on the road with different structure and surface quality.

The aim of the paper is to evaluate a method of determining true stress in the steel sample subjected to static axial tensile on a universal testing machine. The tensile specimens were made of steel ST3, which was chosen because of its relatively high plastic deformations. Strain measurement was performed using traditional extensometers and additionally a non-contact optical deformation measuring system. Material properties were obtain by the extensometer measurements. The optical equipment registered the investigated sample through the optical system composed of two cameras and calculated a three-dimensional model of the material deformation in time. Displacement fields in axial and radial directions were determined with Digital Image Correlation method (DIC). Then the logarithmic axial strain map and radius shrinkage map in the area of the neck were obtained. Characteristic dimensions of the neck: curvature and width were also measured. It allowed determination of cross-section area changes in the real time, and in the result, calculation of actual true stress in the material during failure process. In this case Bridgman's and other scientists' formulas of stress distribution in the neck were applied. A numerical model, where material properties of finite elements were described by the Johnson-Cooke material model, was developed in LS-PrePost software. The FEM model was computed in LS-DYNA solver. The output tensile curve and neck curvature radius were compared with relevant data obtained from the optical measuring system.

Opis:
The paper discusses issues related to measurement of unsteady angular speed of diesel engine crankshaft. The focus is on the selection and optimization of the measuring method to obtain high accuracy, eliminating errors resulting from the unsteady angular speed of markers on diesel engine crankshaft. A method that uses a counter markers placed on the engine flywheel had been worked out. Markers location has been read out by two slit optical sensors. Number of markers and the distance between the sensors were chosen so as to counter tooth during the transition between the sensors count the more than 10,000 pulses at rated speed of the shaft. This provided a measurement method resolution at 0.01 %. Initial studies were performed on one-cylinder diesel engine with the greatest unsteady of angular speed. Additionally analysis which treated the measured unsteady angular speed of diesel engine crankshaft as a deforming pressure mapping as a function of the calculated piston movement was performed. This deformation is caused by the assumption that a constant rotation speed is proportional to time, and measurements are made at a constant rate. In the case of synchronized measurements of PLL circuits duplicating markers on the shaft against the expectations the deformations due to the activity of the follow-up mode of such systems are increased. The influence of these deformations on the designation of an average error of cylinder indicated pressure and other parameters obtained from the analysis of the pressure and vibration envelope has been examined.

Opis:
During metal cutting process, an increase of the tool and workpiece temperatures can be observed. The heat generated has a negative influence on the tool life and performance. It causes rapid tool wear, plastic deformation of the cutting edge, built-up-edge formation and others. Therefore, the control of cutting temperature is required to achieve the desired tool performance. Temperature is the most frequently measured physical quantity, second only to time. Accurate temperature monitoring improves product quality and increases productivity. Downtimes are decreased, since the manufacturing processes can proceed without interruption and under optimal conditions. In this work, authors propose noncontact infrared method for determining temperature of machining processes. This was mainly due to thermography ability to catching moving targets in real time, to measure temperatures over some area not only in point. As a result of measurement, it is obtained a data set that is presented in a form of a colourful map: a thermogram. Getting an accurate temperature of an object using this method is difficult because of numerous errors, which researchers could done during experiments. This work presents some results of research done during turning and drilling realized on conventional lathe CDS 6250 BX-1000. These demonstrate the usefulness of proposed method to study the machining processes temperature.

Opis:
Currently produced diesel engines of different manufacturers, used for the same applications, have comparable specific fuel consumption. Therefore, the laboratories measuring fuel consumption, especially in comparative tests, require the use of more accurate methods of measurement. The Environmental Protection Centre of Motor Transport Institute has recently implemented the fuel consumption measurement method using KMA Mobile flow meter produced by AVL company. This device allows to carry out measurements by both volumetric and mass method, thanks to builtin device for measuring the fuel density. Due to some customers requirements the laboratory began with preparations for obtaining accreditation of the Polish Centre of Accreditation for the procedure of measuring fuel consumption by volumetric and mass method. One of the requirements of the Polish Centre for Accreditation is carrying out the validation of the new method. It can be done by comparing the results obtained with new method with the results of the method already validated. The validated method is described in the regulation. This is the carbon balance method described in UN-ECE Regulations No. 101. The calculation of fuel consumption according to this method is based on a measurement of pollutants emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (THC). This paper describes the fuel consumptions measuring procedure using two methods: mass method using a AVL KMA Mobile flow meter and carbon balance method using the AVL AMA i60 analyzers. To verify measurement results additionally there was fuel consumption measured with using a scale, as a difference of the external fuel tank mass change, from which the vehicle was fuelled during the tests

This equipment allows measurement of the exhaust emissions from all modes of transport. Besides, the article contains the results of exhaust emission research for engines of a variety of transport applications such as light duty vehicles and heavy-duty vehicles. Own exhaust emission research results performed under different traffic conditions of new motor vehicles fuelled with different fuels (gasoline, diesel fuel and natural gas) have been compared with the type approval values that define the vehicle emission indexes. The analysis has been performed in relation to a vehicle but the proposed measurement methodology is also knit to the engine operating conditions. The testing of heavy-duty vehicles described in the book was divided into several stages for which the results obtained for these vehicles were compared for loaded and unloaded vehicles. Ecological advantages of the city buses of different powertrain configurations have been determined (diesel, hybrid) on selected regular bus lines in city centre.

This material presents the results of works implemented so far at the Department of Underwater Works Technology of the Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia within the project No. O N502 274039 focused on an attempt to prepare theoretical assumptions for the visual diagnostics system for underwater objects. The main accomplishments until now have been the preparation of a mathematical model allowing specification of dimensions of photographed underwater objects and construction of a prototype underwater photogrammetric camera together with software used in frame analysis. Moreover, the project involved carrying out experiments resulting in an initial assessment of the prepared method. Currently obtained results indicate that the measurement method under verification based on a light model constitutes a rough measurement method. Relative uncertainties regarding the measurement of linear quantities at average amount to 10%. What has a significant impact on the size of this error is the fact of defining nodal points in relation to figures and segments analysed in a given frame with the use of a cursor manually controlled with a computer mouse. This leads to the conclusion that ‘manual’ introduction of nodal points for the examined figures constitutes the weakest element of the verified measurement method and its modification will be the main objective of further research. It is expected that the CYKLOP camera and the application prepared for its operation will constitute a system for a technical assessment of underwater objects on the basis of visual research. This will be an important leap in relation to the quality of the visual examination of underwater objects, as the methods used so far allowed only qualitative assessment of objects. The constructed system will, on the other hand, enable obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data.
