Opis:
Composting is a process of the biological decomposition of organic matter under aerobic conditions. Composts made from waste may still contain other substances that influence plant growth and development, such as vitamins or plant growth substances (plant hormones). Application of products containing phytohormones has an effect on numerous physiological processes in plants. Among observable results are: improved condition of the root system, increased absorption of nutrients, improved stress and disease resistance and delayed aging. The purpose of the research was to analyse the occurrence of plant hormones in mature composts made from selectively collected organic fraction of household municipal solid waste. Solid waste processing was carried out in a composting plant located at the Municipal Waste Management Plant in Żywiec (Silesian Province, Żywiecki District, Poland). The composting plant uses a Herhor bioreactor. Organic waste constituted 70% of the mixture, with the remaining 30% composed of structural material. Regarding the varying amounts of green waste (mainly grass clippings), the composts were divided into two groups: early spring composts and late spring composts. Four out of the five analysed substances (from the auxin and cytokinin groups) were found in composts made from waste collected in early spring. Composts made from waste collected from May to June contained mostly cytokinins and gibberellic acid. Total concentration of plant hormones in the composts was related to the content of plant waste in processed material.

Opis:
Apple replant disease (ARD) is the consequence of replantation of the same or related species of crops. As a result of the occurrence of ARD, the physicochemical and biological properties of the soil deteriorate. It causes considerable economic losses and may significantly reduce fruit production, especially in regions with high density of orchards. It is difficult to indicate an effective method of preventing the consequences of ARD due to the diversity of causative factors. The development of ARD can be effectively limited by chemical fumigation. However, there are numerous limitations to this method because it is a nuisance to the environment. Not only soil pathogens but also the beneficial microflora may be destroyed, especially by broad-spectrum fumigants. Biofumigation, which involves the use of plants with phytosanitary properties, is an environment-friendly alternative. These plants produce potentially bioactive compounds which, apart from their fungicidal effect, also have nematicidal, insecticidal, antiviral, and cytotoxic properties. This article is a review of the results of research on the effects of biofumigation in orchards with ARD. It shows how the plants used for biofumigation, mainly plants of the Brassicaceae, Asteraceae family, reduced the occurrence of biological causes of ARD (fungi and especially nematodes), and promoted the development of beneficial microorganisms in replanted soil. As a result of biofumigation, both physical and biological properties of the soil are improved, and that leads to improvements of vegetative growth of fruit trees and apple trees in a fruit tree nursery.

Opis:
One possible method of drinking water treatment is chlorine dioxide disinfection. This technology, however, requires reliable control of its byproducts, including chlorite ions., which pose a threat to human health. In this paper an original procedure for flow indirect determination of chlorite in drinking water was described. This method relies on oxidization of chlorite ions by iron(III) in acid environment measurement of the spectrophotometric signal for the phenanthroline/iron(II) complex. The determinations were carried out by flow analysis with the use of a dedicated set of flow instruments. The method was used for analysis of natural samples collected from various water intakes in Kraków. The new analytic approach was compared with the routinely applied ion chromatography method.
Metodę zastosowano do analizy próbek pobranych z różnych ujęć wody pitnej w Krakowie. Dokonano porównania opracowanego podejścia analitycznego z rutynowo stosowaną metodą chromatografii jonowej.
