Opis:
Legumes should be considered as an important part of a healthy diet, because of both their nutritional value (high protein and low fat content) and functional properties (Trichopoulou et al. 2014). The functional components include carbohydrates, soluble fiber, vitamins and polyphenols. Epidemiological studies have shown a positive correlation between the consumption of legumes and a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and certain types of cancer. In the past few years, phenolic compounds have attracted much attention owing to a large variety of biological actions, including anti-inflammatory effects, which they can produce (García-Lafuente et al. 2014). Chronic inflammation is a cause of many serious diseases, including cardiac disorders, allergy, DM 1, Alzheimer’s disease. In the anti-inflammatory food pyramid, pulses were placed at the base (Viveky et al. 2013). The aim of this study was to determine the content of amino acids, fatty acids, carbohydrates, macro- and micro-elements in the common legumes. The total protein content varied from 17.9 to 22.5 g 100 g-1. The mean content of fat varied from 1.1 to 2.0 g 100 g-1 and the soluble sugar content ranged from 4.3 to 7.9 g 100 g-1. The dominant amino acids were glutamic and aspartic acids. Methionine and cysteine composed the lowest percentage of all amino acids. Pulses were characterized by the presence of such fatty acids as a-linoleic, linoleic, oleic and palmitic acid. The mean content of iron varied from 3.3 to 5.3 g 100 g-1. The highest amount of this element was found in small bean, which was also characterized by the highest copper content. The highest amounts of zinc, calcium and magnesium were contained in dark red kidney bean. The analyzed pulses were distinguishd by high nutritive value. The identifed amino acids profile indicates sufficient quantity of lysine and shortage of sulphuric acids. The pulses also had a beneficial composition of fatty acids. The omega-6 to omega-3 ratio was between 1:2 and 4:1.

Opis:
The influence of thermal inversions on the variability of sulphur dioxide concentrations in calendar winter (December to February) was assessed based on a 10-year measurement series from 2004/2005 to 2013/2014. The data on daily sulphur dioxide concentrations were obtained from four urban air quality measurement stations operated in a measurement network by the Regional Inspectorate of Environmental Protection (WIOŚ) in Wrocław, and from the ARMAAG Foundation in Gdańsk. The occurrence of thermal inversions was traced based on data from aerological measurements conducted twice daily (at 00:00 and 12.00 UTC) at two aerological stations, in Wrocław and in Łeba. This allowed for determine the thickness of the surface (lower) inversion layers, as well as the height of the base and thickness of the first (the lowest) layer in the free atmosphere (elevated). The effect of inversion on the variability of daily SO2 concentrations was investigated using single linear regression at statistical significance levels of α = 0.05 and α = 0.01. The conditions of dispersion of the pollutants in the lower troposphere in the winter seasons from 2004/2005 to 2013/2014 were predominantly determined by the elevated inversion layers, which occurred in both regions at comparable frequency of almost 90%, both in daytime and nighttime. Surface inversions were recorded significantly less frequently, mostly at night. The data also showed that the thickness of inversion layers and the height at which they formed affected the concentration of SO2, although the statistically significant role of elevated inversions manifested itself at both times of the 24-hour period, whereas the role of surface inversions was evident only at night.

Opis:
A hydroponic experiment has been conducted to determine the physiological and biochemical response of four new rye lines – S120, S76, OT1-3 and 541 – bred at the Department of Plant Genetics and Breeding, Agricultural University in Szczecin. Seeds were sown into soil and placed into a phytotrone chamber with controlled atmosphere and photoperiod. The relative humidity was 80%, the temperature maintained at 20oC and the intensity of photosynthetically active radiation (Phar) was 700 μmol⋅m-2⋅s-1. Seed germination occurred after about 5 days. The seeds were characterised by different germination ability: 80% for S120, 100% for S76, 82% in OT1, and just 50% for 541 line. Rye seedlings, at the 2-3 leaf stage, were placed in hydroponic units and a two-factor experiment was set up, with potassium deficiency being the first factor and rye lines the second one. The control variant consisted of seedlings placed on complete Hoagland’s medium, while potassium starvation was performed on a medium with 50% deficiency of this element. After seven days, fresh matter was weighed, proline content was measured according to the BATES method (1973) and amounts assimilation pigments were measured according to the method of ARNON et al. (1956). The results were processed statistically, performing a two-factor analysis of variance, while the significance of factors was tested using Tukey’s test at α = 0.05. The study aimed at examining selected physiological and biochemical indicators of the resistance response of four rye lines to stress induced by potassium deficiency. Application of 50% potassium deficiency in a medium induced an increase in the content of assimilation pigments in leaf fresh matter of S120 rye line. A correlation was found between proline content and that of assimilation pigments. The largest proline quantity, 27.2 μg⋅g-1 f.m., was found in 541 rye line seedlings, but its content decreased together with fresh matter yield. It was also found that the total chlorophyll content was directly proportional to the content of proline in S120, S76 and OT1-3 rye lines, whereas in the case of other pigments such a relationship existed only for S 120 and S76 rye lines.
Celem doświadczenia było zbadanie reakcji fizjologicznej i biochemicznej 4 nowych linii żyta: S120, S76, OT1-3, 541, wyhodowanych w Katedrze Genetyki i Hodowli Roślin Akademii Rolniczej w Szczecinie. Nasiona wysiano do gleby i umieszczono w fitotronie z kontrolowaną atmosferą i fotoperiodem. Wilgotność względna wynosiła 80%, temperatura 20°C, a natężenie promieniowania fotosyntetycznie czynnego Phar – 700 μmol⋅m- 2⋅s-1. Kiełkowanie nasion nastąpiło po ok. 5 dniach. Nasiona charakteryzowały się różną zdolnością kiełkowania: S120 – 80%, S76 – 100% OT1 – 82%, 541 – 50%. W hydroponikach umieszczono siewki żyta w fazie 2-3 liści i założono doświadczenie dwuczynnikowe. Po 7 dniach oznaczono świeżą masę (wagowo), zawartość proliny metodą BATESA (1973), zawartość barwników asymilacyjnych metodą ARNONA i in. (1956).

Opis:
The Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is described as a cyclical disorder related to the hormonal changes during a menstrual cycle, which affects the emotional and physical health of many women during their reproductive period of life. The PMS can obviously change the quality of life. The syndrome is characterized by a complex group of symptoms, such as depression, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, abdominal discomfort. These signs occur during the luteal phase of a menstrual cycle and disappear after the onset of menses. Some studies suggest that a variety of nutrients may play an important role in the mood swings which occur cyclically during the course of the premenstrual syndrome and that some can have a beneficial impact, especially on the estrous phase of a menstrual cycle. The aim of the paper is to review the results of some studies concerning the role of bioelements in patients with the PMS. Concentrations of magnesium, zinc, selenium and manganese are the highest during menses and the lowest in the ovulatory phase. Fluctuations of the magnesium concentration during a menstrual cycle and the involvement of this element in many cellular pathways and neuromuscular activities obviously affect the incidence or intensity of the PMS symptoms. However, we lack firm evidence that magnesium supplementation can have a positive effect on alleviating the the PMSrelated ailments. Some relationship between the PMS and bone demineralization or depressed calcium concentration in blood has been identified. However, further studies are necessary to examine how the calcium concentration in a human body can decrease the intensity of the PMS symptoms.

Opis:
The aim of this study has been to make an analysis and evaluation of iodine content in running surface waters in protected landscape areas (PLA) in the Czech Republic. Water samples were taken in 2009-2011 in Jeseníky PLA (Rapotín locality) and in Šumava PLA (Arnoštov and Lipno localities), and in 2009-2010 in the upper course of the Blanice River and its tributaries in and outside of Šumava PLA. Iodine was determined by the ICP-MS method. The average iodine content was 1.55±0.33 μg dm-3 (n = 41) in Jeseníky PLA and 2.58±0.33 μg dm-3 (n = 24) and 2.29±0.84 μg dm-3 (n = 30) in Šumava PLA. The average iodine content in water samples of the Blanice River and its tributaries localized in Šumava PLA was 2.27±0.65 and 2.38±0.66 μg dm-3 and outside of Šumava PLA it equalled 2.90±0.68 and 3.26±1.51 μg dm-3. The lowest concentration of 1.43 μg dm-3 was found out in a sample from the Spálenecký brook (Šumava PLA), and the highest one, 7.63 μg dm-3, was determined in a sample from the Živný brook, which flows below the town Prachatice. Higher concentrations were measured in the summer season: 3.05±0.35 (Blanice) and 3.63±1.24 μg dm-3 (tributaries), while lower ones were determined in the spring season: 1.48±0.30 (Blanice) and 2.37±1.12 μg dm-3 (tributaries). The results confirm the low iodine content in the environment of Jeseníky and Šumava Mts., and the self-purification capacity of the Blanice River even when it is stressed with anthropogenic iodine.

Opis:
The aim of the work was to assess the fattening capability and slaughter value, including the meat mineral composition, of 3 beef cattle breeds. In the first stage of the experiment, the experimental materials comprised 90 bulls divided into three groups of 30 animals each, representing three beef breeds: Kazakh Hereford (KH), Kazakh Whiteheaded (KW) and imported Hereford (IH). The second stage of the study involved 60 bulls at 450 days of age (± 10 days), 10 bulls of each breed were selected randomly and slaughtered. The tested bulls were fattened from 240 to 450 days and from 450 to 540 days of age, respectively (1st and 2nd stage). The studies showed that the birth weight of bulls was relatively low (slightly above 27 kg) in all groups. Until 240 days of age, imported Hereford bulls were characterized by the highest average daily gains (904 g day-1). At 360 days of age, the average body weight of bulls fattened indoors exceeded 300 kg; Kazakh Hereford bulls had the highest body weight, and differences in the average body weight between groups were statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05). From birth to 450 days of age, the highest daily gain of 810 g was noted in imported Hereford bulls. At 540 days of age, imported Hereford bulls fed indoors (maize silage, hay and concentrate) had the highest average body weight (487.2 kg). In bulls of all breeds, metabolic profile parameters (AST, ALT, ALP, protein, content of Ca, Na, K, Mg and P) remained within the reference ranges, which points to a good health status of animals. Moderate feeding contributed to achieving the highest weight at slaughter by imported Hereford bulls (377.2 kg). Imported Hereford bulls were also characterized by the carcass dressing percentage above 56%, the highest carcass lean content, the lowest carcass fat content and the largest MLD area. Meat from imported Hereford and Kazakh Hereford bulls had the most desirable chemical composition and sensory properties.

Opis:
This study presents the results of an analysis of factors which affect fluorine concentrations in deep water drawn for consumption. The analysis covered two water intakes in Tczew (northern Poland) consisting of 19 wells which supply water from Cretaceous (4), Tertiary (10), and Tertiary and Quaternary (5) horizons. Fluoride concentrations ranged from 0.3 to 2.8 mg·dm-3 with the Maximum Allowable Concentration of 1.5 mg·dm-3. The allowable qualitative standards were exceeded in 38% of the investigated samples. It was found that fluorine concentrations were most profoundly affected by the water-bearing horizon (the highest concentration levels were observed in water drawn from Cretaceous horizons) and well depth. As a general trend, fluorine concentrations increase with depth, but the analysis of water drawn from the same horizon indicates that bottom-layer water may be characterised by a significantly lower fluoride content. The highest fluorine concentrations were reported in water drawn from Cretaceous water-bearing horizons to a depth of 150 m. The mixing of water from various water-bearing horizons proved to be a sufficient measure to obtain water of satisfactory quality with the optimum fluoride concentration.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system, characterized by the presence of scattered foci of demyelination in the brain and spinal cord. Magnesium (Mg) has a significant influence on the nervous system and the immune system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the concentration of Mg in the serum on the ability status of patients with MS. The study group consisted of 101 adults with diagnosed relapsing remitting MS. All participants were investigated on the Expanded Disability Status Scale. The control group included 41 people. The concentration of Mg in the serum was determined by the flame atomic absorption spectrometry method. The patients completed a survey and a 24-hour dietary interview. In patients with MS, the percentage of respondents with normal magnesium content was significantly lower than in the control group (p < 0.05). The study proved that patients with normal Mg serum concentration levels were in better clinical condition, particularly with respect to the function of the pyramidal tract (p = 0.007) and sphincters (p = 0.002), than patients with inadequate levels of Mg in the serum. External factors such as gender, smoking, immunomodulating medications or dietary supplements of Mg were found to have no effect on the concentration of Mg in the serum of MS patients. The results of our study suggest that an abnormal concentration of Mg in the serum of MS patients should be recognized and corrected, as this may improve the health status of people with MS.

Opis:
Iodine is an essential trace element for animals. The major sources of iodine for animals are contained in feed and water, in which the iodine content depends on its amount in the given environment. The aim of this study was to analyse and evaluate the iodine content in soil, soil water, grass mass, and also to assess the effect of grassland exploitation on the iodine content in the Šumava and Jeseníky Protected Landscape Areas (PLAs) in the Czech Republic. The soil type in both PLAs was Modal Cambisol. Soil samples were collected from two different depths (up to 15 cm, 16-30 cm). Soil water samples were extracted from a depth of 40 cm and grass mass samples were collected from an area of 1 x 1 m. The areas according to exploitation intensity were as follows: EA1 – a meadow mowed twice a year, EA2 – a meadow mowed once a year, EA3 – a meadow was not mowed for 5 years. Iodine in soil and grass mass was determined by a spectrometric method (the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction). Iodine in water was measured by the ICP-MS method. The average iodine content in the Jeseníky PLA was 0.91±0.18 mg kg−1 in soil, 1.16±0.79 µg dm-3 in soil water and 0.16±0.07 mg kg-1 of 100% DM of grass and in the Šumava PLA was 4.69±0.70 mg kg-1 in soil, 3.12±0.91 µg dm-3 in soil water and 0.31±0.13 mg kg-1 of 100% DM of grass. A significantly (p<0.01) higher iodine content in soil (5.14±0.55 mg kg−1) was recorded in the most exploited EA1 area. The iodine content in soil water was significantly higher (p<0.05) in the EA2 area. The iodine content in grass mass was not affected by the exploitation of grassland. Significant differences in the iodine content extracted from the two soil depths mentioned above were not observed. The results demonstrated a low iodine content in both PLAs in the Czech Republic (especially in the PLA Jeseníky) and demonstrate complex relationships among individual components of the soil ecosystem affecting iodine bioavailability. The findings also indicated that exploitation may be another factor that can influence the iodine content in soil.

Opis:
The concept of the research is based on the effects of acid rains on the foliage of plants. The study was carried out on 12 coniferous tree (thuya, fir, larch, juniper, Scots pine, black pine, common spruce, silver spruce, cypress, yew tree, oriental thuya, Douglas fir) and 8 monocotyledonous plants (maize, wheat, barley, oats, rye, ryegrass, fescue, ditch reed). Samples of needles and leaves were collected from 20 species during the growth season from spring to summer at different sites of Poznan agglomeration. The needles and leaves were treated with 6 simulated acid rains (SAR) of pH 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, and 5.5 and kept for 72 h at 22°C. The filtrates were tested for Ca, Mg, K, Na, Zn and Fe. The data showed that the concentrations of leaked elements were closely related to the pH of SAR and also depended on the species. The most deleterious simulated acid rains for all tested plants were within the range pH = 3.0 - 4.0. Mineral leakage of coniferous needles as well as monocotyledonous leaves fitted mostly exponential and linear models, with exception of Na, which was described by the quadratic course. On the basis of the photosynthetic maintenance index PMI = Mg/(Zn+Fe), 67% of coniferous tree (CT) represented very low photosynthetic maintenance, contrary to monocotyledons (MP) with 75% corresponding to low photosynthetic maintenance. The high share of MP in this range is the finding which clearly points to the potential adaptability of the latter species to highly anthropogenic ecosystems. Urban greens should not be planted predominantly with conifers, although some may develop slight (grand fir, cypress, oriental thuya, Douglas fir) to high adaptability (Thuya occidentalis, juniper, yew tree) to urban conditions. Nearly all monocotyledons, particularly ryegrass, fescue, wheat, barley, oats and rye may be growing within anthropogenic zones, having strong adaptability features.
