Opis:
Six-week old sunflower seedlings, cv. Ogrodowy, were treated with 0, 15, 45 and 60 mg Pb dm-3, and then the content of lead and selected physiological and biochemical parameters were measured. Photosynthesis efficiency, water relations (intensity of transpiration, relative water content (RWC)) and gene-encoding metallothionein were measured three times after 24, 48 and 72 hours of exposure to Pb. The content of glutathione and lead was analysed after 72 hours’ exposure to Pb. Most of the lead uptake was accumulated in the roots, then in the stems and leaves, but when re-calculated per plant dry weight, the uptake of the metal did not depend on the lead dose applied. The highest 60 mg Pb dm-3 treatment was accompanied by a significant decrease in dry weight content. Moreover, most of the lead taken up in these plants was transported to the stems and leaves (23.6% of total lead uptake). The lead doses used in this study did not affect the intensity of photosynthesis, but a decrease in transpiration and relative water content was observed. The glutathione level in the plants varied depending on the organ examined and the Pb concentration in the treatment. The expression of the metallothionein gene HaMT1 was observed in the stems only. These results indicate that the sunflower cultivar Ogrodowy is a promising plant for phytoremediation of lead-polluted soils.

Opis:
Two thirds of the world’s population do not consume the recommended amounts of magnesium (Mg). Hence, there is an increasing interest in producing plants enriched with this element. However, while designing any enrichment treatment, the effects of the amended supply of ions on the quantity, quality and safety of food products must be considered. Leafy vegetables are readily consumed and can be a promising source of Mg and antioxidants. An attempt has been made to evaluate the effect of enriching selected cultivars of lettuce (Romaine lettuce cv. Amadeusz and head lettuce cv. Omega) and endive (cv. Burundi) with Mg (40 – optimal, 80, 120 and 160 mg Mg dm-3) on the (1) concentration of Mg and other elements (K, Ca, Fe and Zn), and the impact of higher Mg concentrations on the (2) biomass accumulation, (3) efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus, (4) level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), (5) activity of antioxidant enzymes and (6) the content of phenolic compounds. Although plants enriched with Mg had a higher concentration of Mg, they usually contained less Fe. The content of Mg in plants was sufficiently high for them to be considered as an alternative dietary source of this element, but the results varied from species to species. A higher concentration of Mg had a minor effect on the biomass accumulation and the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus, but significantly affected the generation of ROS and changed the activity of the examined antioxidant system’s components. These findings demonstrate that enrichment with Mg may simultaneously elevate levels of ROS, which must be taken into consideration prior to implementing any enrichment technology. Among the tested cultivars, endive cv. Burundi proved to be most suitable for Mg enrichment. Plants of this cultivar grown in the presence of Mg in concentrations up to 120 mg Mg dm-3 accumulated considerable amounts of Mg, without any negative side effects.

Opis:
Hydroponic production of leafy vegetables sustains consumption of fresh produce all year round. However, cultivation of leafy vegetables in a growing medium prepared from water contaminated with trace elements, particularly manganese (Mn), may affect both the plant products and their consumers. Therefore, an attempt was made in the present study to evaluate the effect of treating two cultivars of lettuce (cv. Locarno and cv. Satine) with Mn (0.5 – control, 5, 25 and 50 mg dm-3) on (i) the concentration of Mn and other elements, (ii) biomass accumulation, (iii) the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus, (iv) the levels of ROS (reactive oxygen species), (v) the activity of antioxidative enzymes, and (vi) the content of phenolic compounds. Increased concentrations of Mn in the growing medium led to a significantly higher concentration of this element in lettuce leaves (up to a 9.4-fold increase), but concentrations of potassium, calcium and magnesium were almost unchanged. Although the intensity of photosynthesis was lower in both of the examined cultivars, biomass accumulation was slightly reduced only in cv. Locarno. The recorded toxic effect of Mn most probably resulted from the induced generation of ROS, levels of which usually increase albeit insignificantly in plants treated with the tested metal. Higher generation of ROS was to some extent counteracted by the increased activity of antioxidative enzymes (ascorbate peroxidase and catalase) and a higher content of phenolic compounds. The results of this study demonstrate that increased accumulation of Mn in lettuce not only impairs the plant growth, but may also pose a risk to human health, as these plant products may become dietary sources of Mn and elevated levels of ROS.

Opis:
The concept of the research is based on the effects of acid rains on the foliage of plants. The study was carried out on 12 coniferous tree (thuya, fir, larch, juniper, Scots pine, black pine, common spruce, silver spruce, cypress, yew tree, oriental thuya, Douglas fir) and 8 monocotyledonous plants (maize, wheat, barley, oats, rye, ryegrass, fescue, ditch reed). Samples of needles and leaves were collected from 20 species during the growth season from spring to summer at different sites of Poznan agglomeration. The needles and leaves were treated with 6 simulated acid rains (SAR) of pH 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, and 5.5 and kept for 72 h at 22°C. The filtrates were tested for Ca, Mg, K, Na, Zn and Fe. The data showed that the concentrations of leaked elements were closely related to the pH of SAR and also depended on the species. The most deleterious simulated acid rains for all tested plants were within the range pH = 3.0 - 4.0. Mineral leakage of coniferous needles as well as monocotyledonous leaves fitted mostly exponential and linear models, with exception of Na, which was described by the quadratic course. On the basis of the photosynthetic maintenance index PMI = Mg/(Zn+Fe), 67% of coniferous tree (CT) represented very low photosynthetic maintenance, contrary to monocotyledons (MP) with 75% corresponding to low photosynthetic maintenance. The high share of MP in this range is the finding which clearly points to the potential adaptability of the latter species to highly anthropogenic ecosystems. Urban greens should not be planted predominantly with conifers, although some may develop slight (grand fir, cypress, oriental thuya, Douglas fir) to high adaptability (Thuya occidentalis, juniper, yew tree) to urban conditions. Nearly all monocotyledons, particularly ryegrass, fescue, wheat, barley, oats and rye may be growing within anthropogenic zones, having strong adaptability features.
