Opis:
The hydroponic system is very often used for greenhouse vegetable production. The flood irrigation on a bench or on the flood floors is applied in the production of ornamental plants and vegetable transplants. This system is environmentally friendly, since fertigation is used in a closed system using the recirculation of nutrient solution. The aim of this study, conducted in 2010-2012, was to determine the effect of flood fertigation with different concentrations of nutrient solution (EC: 1.0; 2.0; 3.0; 4.0 mS cm-1) on the yield and quality of the butterhead lettuce cultivar Natalia grown in different substrates (coconut coir, peat and rockwool). The experiment was conducted in the spring and autumn cycle. The highest marketable yield at each concentration of the nutrient solution was achieved in the cultivation in rockwool, both within the spring and autumn. The highest nitrate content in lettuce in terms of both cultivation cycles was found in the lettuce grown in the nutrient solution concentration of EC 4 mS cm-1, and the lowest one was achieved in the nutrient solution concentration of EC 1.0 mS cm -1. Significantly less of nitrates was in lettuce grown in spring than in autumn. Higher levels of EC significantly increased the content of P and K in lettuce leaves during in both growing cycles, while the content of Ca and Mg was not significantly different. The applied substrates had a significant impact on the content of K, P, Ca and Mg in leaves of lettuce. The best concentration of the nutrient solution used for flood fertigation of greenhouse lettuce was EC 3.0 mS cm-1 for the spring cultivation and EC 4.0 mS cm-1 for the fall crop.

Opis:
The effects of different types of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on the root inoculation and plant elemental content of lupin (Lupinus albus L.) were investigated in the present study. The growth and development of lupin were examined to determine the species of AM fungi that can help to grow lupin with a high protein content and economic value. In this study, which was carried out as a pot experiment under controlled greenhouse conditions, first the pots were inoculated with Glomus geosporum, Glomus mosseae, Glomus caledonium, Glomus etunicatium mycorrhizal spores and then lupin (Lupinus albus) seeds were sown. The plants were watered with pure water during the experiment. The trial was terminated after a 60-day plant gowing period. In the study, inoculation occurred at lupin roots at rates varying between 13.3 and 30.0%. However, there was no statistically significant difference among the types of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi applied to the plant in the inoculation rate. The examination of the effect of the application of different AM (Glomus geosporum, Glomus mosseae, Glomus caledonium, Glomus etunicatium) spore on the plant development showed that AM inoculation did not have an effect on the lupin development. The effect of AM inoculation on the plant’s nutrient content revealed no significant difference in the content of crude protein, P and K, while demonstrating a significant increase in the sulphur and magnesium content versus the control. The plant content of crude protein varied between 185.6 and 226.5 (g kg-1), phosphorus – 0.61-0.74 (g kg-1) and potassium – 9.6-11.1 (g kg-1). The concentrations of Zn, Cu, B and Mo in lupin did not show statistically significant modifications caused by the inoculation of different types of AM. However, the plant Mn content showed a decrease due to AM inoculation, whereas a significant increase was observed in the Na content after AM inoculation. AM fungi were observed in plant roots after the inoculation with any of the four different types of mycorrhiza. But no positive effects of mycorrhizal inoculation were not observed on crude protein and the uptake of plant nutrients.

Opis:
Optimal nutrition of sugar beets at critical growth stages is one of the crucial factors for the achievement of their highest yield potential. In the present study, it was presumed that reduced systems of sugar beet cultivation had no effect on the plants’ nutritional status at critical growth stages, on their yield or technological quality. In 2012-2013, two series of one-factorial field experiments with different beet crop husbandry were carried out in order to verify this hypothesis. The cultivation systems of sugar beet crops differed in the postharvest cultivation technology, mulch types and seedbed tillage. Conservation tillage systems were compared with the control treatment, which represented the conventional cultivation system with an application of manure and 35 cm deep autumn ploughing. The plant nutritional status assessment was carried out at two dates corresponding to the following growth stages: BBCH 16/17 (6-8 fully unfolded true leaves) and BBCH 39/40 (row closing). Regardless of the methods of tillage or the year of observation, the results showed that the plants at BBCH16/17 stage were well-nourished with macroelements but malnourished with microelements, mainly iron and zinc. The microelement deficiency in the plants was a result of adjusted soil reaction, which varied from slightly acidic to neutral. At the BBCH 39/40 stage, there was a decreasing trend in the content of leaf macronutrients in the no-tillage systems treatments compared to the conventional tillage with the ploughing depth to 35 cm and manure application. The reduced tillage systems in sugar beet cultivation did not result in either a yield decrease or a worse technological quality of roots. The experimental factor had no significant effect on the content of molassegenic compounds in beet roots. A decreasing trend was observed in the content of α-amino nitrogen and potassium when compared to the traditional cultivation system. The study showed that the choice of a cultivation technology is of secondary importance as long as the plant grows in optimal conditions resulting from an appropriate site selection.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of different tillage systems on the yield, quality and mineral composition of grain of durum wheat. Three tillage systems were compared in the experiment: 1) conventional (CT), 2) reduced (RT) and 3) herbicide (HT). In the CT system, shallow ploughing and harrowing were performed after the harvest of the previous crop and late autumn ploughing was carried out before winter. In the RT system, double cultivation was performed instead of ploughing, whereas in the HT system the cultivation treatments were replaced by a herbicide containing a.s. glyphosate. In the springtime, a tillage set consisting of a cultivator, string roller and harrow was applied on all plots. Yields of wheat were higher in the years with high precipitation (years 2013-2014) than in the year with low precipitation (2015), as well as in the HT system than in the CT and RT systems. The content of total protein and wet gluten, as well as grain volume weight and grain uniformity were affected more by the study years than by the tillage systems. High sums of precipitation facilitated the accumulation of phytate-P and copper (Cu) in the grain, whereas the precipitation defict increased the content of potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) in grain. The CT system contributed to the accumulation of phytate-P and iron, the RT system favoured the accumulation of calcium and manganese, whereas the HT system stimulated the accumulation of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and copper in durum wheat grain.

Effects of the phosphorus content in a nutrient solution (15 or 50 mg P dm-3), growing substrate (rockwool or coconut fiber) and the plant growth stage (for roots: 71 or 113 days after transplanting DAT; for leaves: 71 or 92 DAT) on the chemical composition of roots, the phosphorus content in leaves and the expression of genes encoding proteins involved in the transport of phosphorus from the medium to the plant were investigated in tomato cv. Admiro F1 grown in a foil tunnel. A fertigation system without recirculation was used. Regardless of the plant age and growing substrate, tomatoes fertilized with a nutrient solution containing 50 mg P dm-3 had more phosphorus, iron, boron and copper in roots and more phosphorus in leaves. Irrespective of the stage of plant growth and phosphorus level in the medium, the content of almost all macro- and microelements was higher in roots of plants grown in rockwool than in coconut fiber. The stage of plant growth significantly affected the mineral composition of roots as well as the P content in tomato leaves. More phosphorus was stored in roots of younger plants, whereas the phosphorus content was lower in younger than in older leaves. Our analysis of the gene expression showed that transporters encoded by LePT1-LePT4 were involved in phosphate nutrition. Expression of the genes was generally (except LePT4) higher in plants treated by the solution containing 15 mg P dm-3 than in plants treated by 50 mg P dm-3. The expression of genes LePT2, LePT3 in roots of older plants (113 DAT) was generally higher than in young plants.

Opis:
Evaluation of the nutritional status of zinc and other micronutrients in maize at the critical growth stages is an important diagnostic and prognostic factor that plays a substantial role in shaping its final yield. A hypothesis was verified that the application of different phosphorus and potassium fertilization doses affected the nutritional status of zinc in maize at the critical growth stages: leaf development (BBCH 17) and flowering (BBCH 65), as well as the zinc accumulation at the stage of ripening (BBCH 89, fully ripe). A single factor field study was conducted for 5 consecutive plant growing seasons (2007-2011). The results showed that mineral fertilization significantly increased zinc concentration in maize leaves at BBCH 17 and BBCH 65 growth stages. Regardless of the effects of the experimental factor, the Zn leaf content in maize at both critical growth stages was much below the standard value. Although the zinc concentration observed at the leaf development stage was low, no significant relationship was found between the zinc nutritional status in maize at that time and the subsequent grain yield. Stronger relationships between the zinc nutritional status in maize and grain yield were observed at the flowering stage. The total accumulation of zinc in maize was significantly differentiated by the experimental factor. The chemical form of phosphorus applied had no significant effect on Zn content in maize at the critical growth stages as well as on the accumulation of this nutrient in fully ripe plants. The ZnHI value obtained in the control treatment was 51.7%, whereas the values achieved in fertilizer treatments were higher and ranged from 52.9% (W100 PAPR – with partially acidulated phosphate rock) to 57.3% (W25 – 25% of K and P recommended rate). Correlation analysis on maize yield and zinc accumulation showed that yield volumes were determined most strongly by zinc accumulation in maize vegetative organs (especially husk leaves).

Opis:
Application of mineral fertilisers, especially nitrogen ones, increases potato yields. On the other hand, it can depreciate the quality of potato tubers and raise storage loss. With bio-fertilisers like UGmax, farmers can limit the need for mineral fertilisers by activating minerals which occur in soil. Microorganisms contained in UGmax, enriched with the start-nutrition medium, process (compost) residue of the last harvested crop, straw, manure break crops (organic fertilisers), etc. Together with soil minerals, they make humus, a natural environment for soil life as well as a ‘store’ of nutrients. The aim of the following, 3-year research was to determine changes in the content of vitamin C, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and crude protein (nitrogen x 6.25) in cv. Satina potato tubers stored for 6 months indoors at the temperature of 4°C, depending on previous application of soil fertiliser (with/ without UGmax), varied organic matter (without fertiliser, stubble intercrop: pea, straw and farmyard manure (FYM) as well as a half dose of mineral fertilisation as compared with the control. The highest vitamin C content was recorded in potato tubers from the treatments with FYM, full NPK and soil fertiliser. With half the dose of mineral fertilisation, UGmax most effectively increased the vitamin C content in potato tubers in the treatments with FYM and pea. The biggest decrease in the content of that nutrient after 6-month storage appeared in tubers from the plots with FYM, 50% NPK and without UGmax (38.5%). The content of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and total protein in tubers significantly depended on the dose of mineral fertilisation, where full NPK increased the content of the analysed nutrients. Moreover, the content of potassium was significantly higher in tubers from the plots with farmyard manure (FYM). The use of the soil fertiliser significantly increased nitrogen and total protein in tubers. After 6-month storage in chambers at + 4°C, the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content decreased slightly, on average by 4.9%, 12.4%, 13.1%, respectively.

Opis:
The rapid acceleration of eutrophication calls for effective methods to reverse or at least decelerate this process and its consequences, such as phytoplankton blooms, deterioration of water transparency, loss of oxygen balance as well as nitrogen and phosphorus internal loading from bottom sediments. Many different restoration methods have already implemented in order to improve the quality of lake water in Poland and around the world. Science reports on lake restoration mostly present short-term results achieved with one method, sometimes with a combination of few technologies, methods. Noteworthy is the scarcity of longitudinal observations and descriptions of persisting changes in environmental conditions and trophic status after a lake restoration process. The aim of the study was to present long-term changes in the trophic status of an urban lake which were been achieved through artificial aeration with thermal destratification and phosphorus inactivation, based on water quality parameters and an analysis of biotic and abiotic conditions prevailing in this lake. The study was conducted on Długie Lake, situated in the town of Olsztyn. This lake had acted as a sink of raw domestic sewage (400 m3 day-1) for 20 years. After preliminary conservation operations, the lake was restored by the artificial circulation and phosphorus inactivation methods. Prior to the restoration effort, the lake had been classified as hypertrophic, with an average TSI index value of 79. The average chlorophyll a concentration was 63 μg l-1 and water transparency did not exceed 0.3 m. The implementation of two restoration methods improved the trophic level and the lake became mesotrophic. The improvement seems permanent, as the mean TSI index is 50 ten years since the termination of the restoration procedures.

Opis:
The effect of mineral (NPK) fertilization on the content of nitrogen fractions in timothy grass was assessed from the results of a three-year field experiment conducted at the Elizówka Experimental Farm near Lublin, on podzolic soil developed from loess. The experiment was included 27 fertilized treatments, i.e. nine nitrogen and potassium variants tested, each in four replications. against the background of three increasing phosphorus fertilization doses. Nitrogen was applied as ammonium nitrate at a dose of 120 kg N ha-1 (N1) and at two-fold (N2) and three -fold (N3) higher doses. Phosphorus was applied in the form of granular triple superphosphate at a dose of 34.9 kg P ha-1 (P1) and at two-fold (P2) and three-fold (P3) higher doses. Potassium was used as potassium salt (47.3 %) at a dose of 83 kg K ha-1 (K1) and at two-fold (K2) and three-fold (K3) higher doses. After grass harvest, plant material was sampled and the content of total, protein, ammonium and nitrate nitrogen(V) was determined in duplicate. It was found that the content of the nitrogen fractions analysed in timothy grass, i.e. total, protein, mineral, ammonium and nitrate(V) nitrogen, was significantly positively correlated with the mineral fertilization, in particular, with nitrogen and phosphorus and, to a lesser extent, with potassium. The mean share of protein nitrogen in total nitrogen was 53.8%; mineral, ammonium, and nitrate nitrogen fractions constituted 4.0, 2.5, and 1.5%, respectively. Timothy grass fertilized with increasing doses of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers contained the largest share of protein nitrogen in total nitrogen, did not contain excessive amounts of nitrates(V) and proved to be valuable bulk feed.
