Opis:
The aim of this study has been to determine the response of cyanobacteria to the lake protection and restoration measures implemented in the littoral zone of an urban lake called Jeziorak Mały. The first investigations were conducted in 1996 and were resumed in 1997-2003, 2005 and 2013, following the installation of a separator and the creation of stone accumulation sites. Long-term changes in phytoplankton cyanobacterial proportions, abundance and biomass were analyzed in relation to environmental conditions at the sites in the littoral zone (S – separator pipes, K – sites with stones and R – sites with macrophytes). Relationships between cyanobacteria and water chemistry variables were analyzed by calculating the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, and then with canonical correspondence analysis (RDA). The results provided evidence that water temperature, total nitrogen and iron concentration (S, R), but also PO43- in spring (S,K) were the principal factors affecting cyanobacterial development. There was a significant decrease in the share, abundance and biomass of cyanobacteria coinciding with a decrease in conductivity and PO43- following the onset of lake restoration efforts. Changes in dominant species from the ones typical in hypertrophic lakes to those typically found in eutrophic lakes took place during the research. The modifications indicated a strong initial response of cynaobacteria to the restoration measures, but the situation stabilized in 2013, when cyanobacteria returned to their previous average levels. This suggests that the introduction of lake restortation measures contributed to the lake’s improved water quality and they should be retained for efficient lake management in the future.

Properties of peat reflect the peat-forming environment, peat development processes and the types of peat-forming plant. They also enable peat classification and quality evalution. Investigation of the physicochemical properties of organic matter is the key to understanding the history, evolution and geology of bogs. The purpose of this study was to determine some physicochemical properties, such as pH, Eh, electrolytic conductivity, carbon forms in water extracts and dry peat samples (TOC, IC, TC), degree of decomposition, macrofossil plant analysis and ash content, in a whole stratigraphic profile of bog sediment located near Lake Moszne. The research comprised a 17.5 ha lake, which was described in the 1990s as a dystrophic one, and the adjacent mires. The open water surface of the lake is surrounded by a 30–150 m wide belt of floating mat, composed of peatmosses and sedges with the dominant Sphagno-Caricetum rostratae association, all representing vegetation typical for transitional mires. These communities are most often found in the Polesie Lubelskie Region, in old lakes, and usually on their floating mat. The research material was collected from such a site. The analysis demonstrated acidic pH (4.17 in profile I and 4.08 in profile II, respectively) in the layer of 0-0.65 m, whilst from the 1.50 m depth to the mineral bottom the pH increased to nearly neutral (pH = 6.62 ± 0.18 in profile I and pH = 6.45 ± 0.12 in profile II). Redox potential in the surface layer corresponds to good oxygenation of mineral soils: 577 mV and 490 mV for profile I and II, respectively. A nearly linear decrease of Eh was observed to about 118 mV at the depth of 2.50 m. Lower than that, down to the depth of 3.50 m, the Eh value was stabilized. The graphical presentation of the Eh-pH relationship shows that in both cases (profiles I and II) aerobiosis prevails to the depth of 0.45-0.65 m, confirming that oxygen continues to be the final electron acceptor.

Opis:
Seasonal and spatial changes of phytoplankton in relation to environmental variables affecting the water quality were investigated along the main channel of Lake Nasser throughout 2013. In total, 104 phytoplankton species, belonging to 7 classes, were identified. Phytoplankton assemblages were dominated by Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae, whereas Dinophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Chrysophyceae and Cryptophyceae were infrequent. Cyclotella glomerata, C. ocellata and Aulacoseira granulata represented the most abundant species among Bacillariophyceae. Cyanophyceae was dominated by Planktolyngbya limnetica and Eucapsis minuta, and Chlorophyceae by Ankistrodesmus fusiformis and Staurastrum paradoxum. The water column was thermally stratified during summer, while being mixed throughout winter. Phytoplankton features and physicochemical variables were analyzed with the principal component analysis. Electrical conductivity and water temperature were the most common factors negatively controlling phytoplankton density. Phytoplankton density was positively associated with NO3, whereas it was negatively correlated with PO4 and HCO3. Cyanophyceae were strongly adapted to the environmental variables and NO2 was limiting their growth. Chlorophyceae were more dependent on PO4 than NO3. The vertical distribution of Chl a was associated with the summer thermal stratification and its concentration increased southwards. Chl a was affected by NO2 and linked to Chlorophyceae. The regional variations of phytoplankton reflected its response to varying environmental conditions. The annual average of the trophic state index indicated eutrophic waters of Lake Nasser.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the response of planktonic cyanobacteria and periphyton assemblages (periphytic algae in the separator pipes, epilithon and epiphyton) to lamella separator-treated stormwaters in urban Lake Jeziorak Mały in 1997-2003 and 2005. Relationships between periphyton and phytoplankton assemblage and water chemistry variables were analyzed by calculating the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, and then with canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). The basic factors favouring the cyanobacterial growth were water temperature and iron, while high chloride concentration limited their development. Cyanobacterial abundance recorded at the separators was half that of the pelagic zone because of a lower water temperature and higher Cl concentration, indicating high algal sensitivity to the considerable velocity and disturbances caused by stormwater effluents. Higher silicon and calcium concentrations at the separators and orthophosphates at sites with stones and gravel showed connection with the growth of diatoms, especially Fragilaria leptostauron var. martyi, Diatoma vulgaris and Navicula gregaria. The richness of the dominant cyanobacteria, Aphanizomenon gracile and Limnothrix redekei, was related with the water temperature, conductivity, pH, and TN. Similarities in the periphyton dynamics in separator pipes and epilithon between the years covered by the study suggest significant influence of separator-treated stormwater on these assemblages, in contrast to epiphyton and phytoplankton in the pelagial zone, where these waters had limited influence.

Opis:
A pot experiment was performed to determine the effect of soil contamination with nickel, applied at a dose of 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg kg-1, on the activity of dehydrogenases, urease, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase. The impact of nickel on the enzymatic activity of soil was studied on samples of heavy loamy sand and light silty loam. The experiment was conducted in two series: in the first one soil was cropped to yellow lupine, and in the second one it was left uncropped. Soil samples were analyzed on day 14, 28, 42 and 56. It was found that soil contamination with nickel reduced the activity of all the enzymes. This negative influence was most noticeable in the case of dehydrogenase. The activity of urease and alkaline phosphatase was higher in light silty loam, while the activity of dehydrogenases and acid phosphatase was higher in heavy loamy sand. The activity of dehydrogenases and urease was higher in soil cropped to yellow lupine, whereas the activity of acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase was higher in uncropped soil. Yellow lupine was sensitive to excessive amounts of nickel in the soil, and partly alleviated the adverse impact of this heavy metal on urease activity, but did not reduce its inhibitory effect on the other enzymes.
Próbki glebowe analizowano: w 14., 28., 42. i 56. dniu. Stwierdzono, że zanieczyszczenie gleby niklem spowodowało zmniejszenie aktywności wszystkich badanych enzymów. Najbardziej niekorzystnie nikiel wpływał na aktywność dehydrogenaz. Wyższą aktywność ureazy i fosfatazy alkalicznej stwierdzono w glinie lekkiej pylastej niż w piasku gliniastym mocnym, natomiast dehydrogenaz i fosfatazy kwaśnej - w piasku gliniastym mocnym. Wyższą aktywność dehydrogenaz i ureazy odnotowano w glebie obsianej łubinem żółtym, natomiast fosfatazy kwaśnej i fosfatazy alkalicznej - w glebie nie obsianej.

This study focused on site-specific preferences of potentially harmful cyanobacterium Gloeotrichia echinulata to occur in lakes with different ecological and trophic conditions. Its pelagic growth was studied in six lakes from June to September in 1986-1988, 2000-2001 and 2009. In total, 78 samples were taken from the epilimnion (stratified lakes) or the whole water column (non-stratified lakes). Analyses of phytoplankton and environmental variables were performed according to standard methods. During summer, a distinct maximum of the Gloeotrichia growth was observed in July or August (the warmest period). Bloom events of G. echinulata occurred in lakes where the light and oxygen conditions were significantly inferior while the phosphorus content remained on a slightly elevated level. The distinct domination of this cyanobacterium (above 40% of the total phytoplankton biomass) was limited to lakes with a high, moderate or even poor ecological status, and to the meso-eutrophic or eutrophic state of lakes. However, G. echinulata occurred in a broader range of ecological and trophic conditions of lakes. The historical approach to mass occurrence of G. echinulata, with its possible contribution to phosphorus translocation from sediment to the pelagic zone, suggested its importance as an indicator of progressive ecological and trophic deterioration of lakes. This indication should be very useful for establishment of main targets in water management.

Opis:
The quality of litter is an important environmental factor in poultry houses. Its proper physicochemical properties have a positive impact on poultry house microclimate and indirectly on poultry farm surroundings as well. Commercial preparations available on the market which disinfect and reduce losses of mineral compounds (primarily nitrogen) in litter are relatively expensive, and thus they are not widely used. Therefore, it is necessary to look for a cheaper option, such as CaO2 addition seems to be. The research was carried out in farm conditions in two poultry houses, in each of which approximately 21 000 Ross 308 broiler chickens were reared. In order to maintain good physicochemical parameters of litter throughout the broiler chicken rearing time, the researchers applied (before bringing in the birds) a single CaO2 addition in the amount of 2 g per 1 m2 of poultry house floor area. During the 6-week chicken rearing period, the following parameters were monitored: temperature, relative humidity and pH value of the litter top layer. The total count of aerobic mesophilic bacteria and the total count of yeasts and moulds were estimated in the litter. Moreover, the content of mineral compounds (N, P, K, Mg, Ca) in fresh litter mass was checked in the 1st, 3rd and 6th week. The results prove that calcium peroxide application has no negative impact on the examined physicochemical parameters of litter (especially on temperature). The addition of calcium peroxide to poultry litter also influenced the stabilization of litter microflora. The content of examined mineral compounds in experimental poultry house litter, which was increasing with chicken rearing time, as shown in the experiment, proved the improving fertilising value of the produced manure. Moreover, due to the slow CaO2 decomposition, it is sufficient to apply it only once during a 6-week broiler chicken production cycle.

Opis:
Environmental studies conducted after the 2010 flood in the middle Vistula River Valley focused on assessment of the physicochemical properties of soil (0-20 cm) sampled from horticultural plantations (2493 samples). Soil pHKCl as well as the content of available P, K and Mg forms were determined. Selected samples (48) were analysed for the content of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, As, Hg), mineral N, S-SO4, salinity and dry mass. The tested soil pH ranged from acid to neutral; the phosphorus content was in the average range, while the content of available potassium was 161.0 mg K kg-1 and that of available magnesium exhibited the value of 160.5 mg Mg kg-1. The mean value of pHKCl and available P were not elevated in the flooded soils versus the same soils before the flood, while the available K and Mg were higher. The content of mineral nitrogen and sulphate sulphur as well as the salinity level were only slightly dependent on the soil agronomic category and soil pH. The content of heavy metals in the soil was higher than before the flood, but did not exceed natural values. The analyses did not demonstrate any significant deterioration of the physicochemical parameters of soils after the 2010 flood, which could negatively affect the quality and yield of cultivated fruit trees and shrubs.
W wybranych 48 próbkach oznaczono dodatkowo zawartość metali ciężkich (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, As, Hg), N-mineralny, S-SO4, zasolenie i suchą masę.

Opis:
This study focused on the phytoplankton and environment relationships as well as on the ecological and trophic conditions of lakes inhabited by coregonid fish. Studies were carried out in deep and stratified vendace-type lakes called Lake Pluszne and Lake Łańskie (the Olsztyn Lake District, north-eastern Poland) in 2007-2008. Ecological and trophic conditions were determined on the basis of the phytoplankton multi-metric PMPL and Trophic State Index. Both lakes were characterized by a similar thermal and mictic regime, with the occurrence of hypolimnetic oxygen deficits. They were classified as hydrocarbonate-calcium type and medium-sized eutrophicated water bodies. According to the integrated trophy assessment, proposed in this research, the final Trophic State Index TSIAV indicated meso-eutrophy of both lakes, although the phytoplankton-based PMPL indicated that the ecological potential in Lake Łańskie was good and less than good - due to large cyanobacteria biomasses - in Lake Pluszne. The actual loads of phosphorus and nitrogen significantly exceeded permissible levels, especially in Lake Łańskie (5-fold at the most of the P content), at similar morphometric and sedimentation conditions in both lakes. However, more intensive water-exchange rate and more favorable conditions for phosphorus runoff in Lake Łańskie could limit the phytoplankton growth, especially cyanobacteria. Summing up, better oxygen conditions and less abundant phytoplankton suggested that Lake Łańskie had more suitable conditions for coregonids during the surveyed period than Lake Pluszne, where the vendace biomass has recently decreased drastically.
