Opis:
Plant demand for molybdenum is small, but it is a micronutrient of great significance for the proper development and functioning of organisms. Its deficiencies may disturb the absorption and influence of other elements on living organisms. The availability of molybdenum for plants depends on many factors, including the fertilization used. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of liming and differentiated NPK mineral fertilization against the background of a constant level of Mg fertilization on the molybdenum content in potato tubers and in the green mass of fodder sunflower grown on loess soil in four and three rotations, respectively. The research was carried out as a long-term experiment on a field owned by the University of Rzeszow in Krasne near Rzeszow (Rzeszow Foothills). The soil on which the research was carried out was a Haplic Luvisols formed from loess. The experiment was set up in a random sub-block design with four replicates. The first variable factor was liming (A2) or its lack (A1), while the second one consisted of different doses of mineral fertilization (14 fertilizer objects) with constant magnesium nutrition. Triple superphosphate contained significant amounts of molybdenum: from traces to 18 mg Mo kg-1. Plant samples were collected after potato and sunflower harvest from four rotations. Molybdenum in dry plant material was determined colorimetrically with the thiocyanate method. The molybdenum content in potato tubers ranged from 0.147 to 0.573 mg kg-1, being much higher in the green mass of fodder sunflower, where it ranged from 0.467 to 2.280 mg kg-1. Liming increased the molybdenum content in the green mass of fodder sunflower. This treatment caused significant changes in the content of this lement in potato tubers. The mineral fertilization of NPK (regardless of liming) increased the molybdenum content in the green mass of fodder sunflower and in potato tubers compared to the object without mineral fertilization.

Opis:
In Poland, the Welsh onion is still grown on a small scale only, while it is widespread and broadly used in the Far East. Owing to their mild, sweet flavour and delicate consistency, whole Welsh onion plants are used as ingredients in various dishes. Recent years have witnessed the growing popularity of Welsh onions in the Polish cuisine, particularly as a spring seasonal item. A two-factorial field experiment in a randomized block design with replications was performed in 2010 – 2012 in the Experimental Garden of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (NE Poland). Seeds of three Welsh onion cultivars, Long White Ishikura, Parade and Performer, were used. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of Polimag S fertilizer applied at different doses on the yield and the nutritional value of the edible parts of Welsh onion plants. The experimental factors were: (1) Welsh onion cultivars Long White Ishikura, Parade and Performer grown from seedlings, and (2) the application of a mixed fertilizer, Polimag S, at two doses of 0.72 t ha -1 and 1.44 t ha -1. The Welsh onion cultivars analyzed did not differ significantly with respect to yield. The total yield of Welsh onions did not increase significantly as the dose of Polimag S was increased from 0.72 t ha-1 to 1.44 t ha-1, which indicates that increased fertilizer use was economically unjustified. In all the years of the study, the lowest Welsh onion yield was obtained in the control treatments. Welsh onions cv. Performer had the highest dry matter content. Welsh onion cultivars and Polimag S had varied effects on the nitrate accumulation in the plants, but the maximum permissible nitrate levels were not exceeded. According to the current Regulation of the Minister of Health of 22 December 2004 the content of heavy metals in Welsh onion was lower than the normal range.

Opis:
The decrease in application of organic fertilizers into arable soils in Slovakia observed for the past twenty-five years has caused degradation of their physical, chemical and biological parameters. In order to solve this problem, Slovak farmers often add to soil such carbon-rich substances which either pose a risk of increasing the heavy metal content of soil, or whose purchase and use are economically demanding. Meanwhile, sawdust is a cheap and available carbon-rich material. Therefore, the objective of a two-year pot experiment was to determine the impact of sawdust used alone or with added inorganic nitrogen on the parameters of sugar beet yield as well as on some soil parameters. The results proved that the separate application of sawdust in autumn in doses of 3.4 t ha-1 and 6.8 t ha-1 caused the retardation of the growth of sugar beet and the decrease of the total chlorophyll content in leaves during the first 80 days of plant growth and development. This application did not have the significant impact on the root yield, but it increased the sugar content of sugar beet roots. The roots contained less a-amino nitrogen and more potassium. The number of nitrogen-fixing bacteria of genus Azotobacter chroococcum (AzCh) and the quantity of organic carbon in soil increased. The addition of mineral nitrogen fertilizer in a dose of 60 kg ha-1 into sawdust before sugar beet sowing in spring lowered or even eliminated the negative impact of sawdust itself on the beet growth and the content of total chlorophyll. It also increased the root yield. This addition had positive impact on the number of bacteria of the genus AzCh and the quantity of organic carbon in soil.

Opis:
This paper presents results of a study on the molybdenum content in grain of winter wheat and spring barley grown on a permanently fertilized field on loessial soil in the Rzeszow Foothills (Podgórze Rzeszowskie), in Poland. The experiment was set up in randomized sub-blocks, with potato, spring barley, fodder sunflower, and winter wheat plants grown in 4 four-year rotation cycles. Fodder cabbage was grown instead of sunflower in the second crop rotation. The first variable factor was liming (A2) or its lack (A1), while the second one consisted of different doses of mineral fertilization. Mineral NPK nutrition was applied together with constant Mg as well as Mg and Ca fertilization (liming). The general fertilization level (N1 P1 K1) for spring barley was 80 kg N ha-1, 43.6 kg P ha-1 and 99.6 kg K ha-1, while for winter wheat it was 90 kg N ha-1, 34.9 kg P ha-1 and 83 kg K ha-1. Constant magnesium fertilization was applied at a 24.1 kg Mg ha-1 dose. Liming at a dose of 4 t CaO ha-1 was applied before starting the experiment and in each year that completed a subsequent crop rotation cycle. There was a significant increase in the molybdenum concentration in grain of winter wheat and spring barley due to the liming applied. A moderate molybdenum content was found in winter wheat grain on non-limed soil 0.278 mg kg-1 DM and on limed soil 0.320 mg kg-1 DM; while in spring barley grain on non-limed soil, it equalled 0.291 mg kg-1 DM and on limed soil 0.455 mg kg-1 DM. Mineral fertilization increased the content of this component in wheat grain and usually or most often reduced its amount in barley grain. The interaction of liming with mineral fertilization did not have any significant effect on the molybdenum content of winter wheat grain and resulted in an increase in the molybdenum content in spring barley grain.

Opis:
The paper presents results of studies on the influence of liming and mineral fertilization on the yields and boron content of potato tubers and green matter of fodder sunflower grown in four and three rotations, respectively, on soil developed from loess. The experiment was set up on a field submitted to long-term fertilization and located in the village Krasne near Rzeszow, lying in the Rzeszów Foothills (Poland). Boron was determined colorimetrically with diantrimide after digestion of dried plant material at 550°C and dissolution of the residue in hydrochloric acid solution. Average yields of potato tubers and green matter of fodder sunflower were higher after liming, but statistical significance was confirmed only for fodder sunflower. Mineral NPK fertilization, regardless of liming, significantly enhanced the yield of green matter of fodder sunflower and, in most fertilization treatments, raised potato tuber yields. Potato tubers accumulated much smaller amounts of boron (2.2-7.5 mg kg-1 DM) than aerial parts of fodder sunflower (20-60 mg kg-1 DM). The boron content was significantly lower in potato tubers from the limed variant than in plants from the non-limed field. The response of sunflower to soil liming was opposite. The mineral fertilization applied, regardless of liming, had no significant effect on the boron content of potato tubers. Mineral nutrition reduced the boron content in the sunflower biomass under the influence of increasing doses of nitrogen and against the background of constant phosphorus-potassium fertilization.

The aim of the study was to compare the levels of selected toxic elements in hair of horses of two breeds, held in areas free of industrial pollution. The research was con- ducted on free range Hucul mares ( n =40) and Purebred Arabian mares ( n =40) kept in a mixed stable-pasture system. The content of 9 elements (arsenic, barium, cadmium, mercury, germanium, lithium, lead, tin and strontium) was determined in each trial. The hair of Purebred Arabian mares was characterized by significantly higher levels of arsenic, barium, mercury, lead, tin and strontium. The differences were statistically significant. Cadmium and germanium, on the other hand, were significantly higher in the hair of Hucul mares. Lithium was found to be on a similar level in both breeds i.e., 0.150 mg kg –1 of dry mass in Hucul horses and 0.142 mg kg –1 of dry mass in Purebred Arabian horses. There was a significant positive correlation between the levels of mercury and arsenic observed in the hair of horses of both breeds. Arabian mares displayed a very high correlation between the levels of barium and lead, barium and tin, and between tin and lead.

Growth regulators stimulate life processes in plants, improving their stress resistance and health, which translates into higher and better quality yield. Growth regulators can improve biochemical parameters of tubers and enhance the potato’s resistance to adverse environmental conditions or pathogens. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of biostimulators on yield and selected chemical properties of potato tubers. Four table potato cultivars were grown in a field experiment: very early Volumia and medium early Irga, Satina and Sylvana. Starting from stage 39 on the BBCH scale (crop cover complete), potato plants were treated thrice, in 10- to 14-day intervals, with the growth regulators Asahi SL, Bio-Algeen S90 and Kelpak. The reference treatment was composed of potatoes untreated with the bioregulators. The growth regulators, especially Bio-Algeen S90 (6.3 – 16.3%) and Kelpak SL (14.2-24.7%) raised the tuber yield, but the effect was statistically verifiable only in the second year, with less precipitation and lower temperature of the vegetation period. The quality of potato tubers was more strongly dependent on the cultivar-specific traits than on the applied biostimulators. In the second year, too, potato tubers contained on average 34% more N-total than in the first year. During storage, the content of N-total in tubers increased by 35-50%. After a five-month storage period, potato tubers contained more NO3 - abut less N-NH4+.

The hydroponic system is very often used for greenhouse vegetable production. The flood irrigation on a bench or on the flood floors is applied in the production of ornamental plants and vegetable transplants. This system is environmentally friendly, since fertigation is used in a closed system using the recirculation of nutrient solution. The aim of this study, conducted in 2010-2012, was to determine the effect of flood fertigation with different concentrations of nutrient solution (EC: 1.0; 2.0; 3.0; 4.0 mS cm-1) on the yield and quality of the butterhead lettuce cultivar Natalia grown in different substrates (coconut coir, peat and rockwool). The experiment was conducted in the spring and autumn cycle. The highest marketable yield at each concentration of the nutrient solution was achieved in the cultivation in rockwool, both within the spring and autumn. The highest nitrate content in lettuce in terms of both cultivation cycles was found in the lettuce grown in the nutrient solution concentration of EC 4 mS cm-1, and the lowest one was achieved in the nutrient solution concentration of EC 1.0 mS cm -1. Significantly less of nitrates was in lettuce grown in spring than in autumn. Higher levels of EC significantly increased the content of P and K in lettuce leaves during in both growing cycles, while the content of Ca and Mg was not significantly different. The applied substrates had a significant impact on the content of K, P, Ca and Mg in leaves of lettuce. The best concentration of the nutrient solution used for flood fertigation of greenhouse lettuce was EC 3.0 mS cm-1 for the spring cultivation and EC 4.0 mS cm-1 for the fall crop.

Opis:
Multi-component fertilizers should be selected based on a thorough analysis of a variety of factors such as plant species, expected yield, nutrient availability, time and mode of application. Mixed fertilizers have to be applied in a rational manner, and their rates should be determined in view of crop yield, crop quality and fertilizer efficiency, so as to maximize the benefits of fertilizer use. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of multi-component fertilizers, Amofosmag 4 and Amofosmag 3, on winter wheat yield, and the content and uptake of macronutrients. A three-year field experiment (2008- 2010) was carried out in a randomized block design at the Research and Experimental Station in Tomaszkowo, at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (NE Poland). The experiment comprised three fertilization treatments in four replications: control treatment (simple fertilizers) and two treatments with mixed multi-component fertilizers, Amofosmag 4 and Amofosmag 3. The tested crop was winter wheat cv. Bogatka. Winter wheat grain yield was modified by fertilizers and weather conditions. The most beneficial effect was reported for Amofosmag 4, which increased the yield of wheat grain by 7% on average, compared with the remaining treatments. A significantly lower grain yield was noted in the second year of the study characterized by adverse weather conditions. The concentrations of the analyzed macronutrients in winter wheat grain and straw varied insignificantly between fertilization treatments. Simple and multi-component fertilizers exerted a comparable effect on the mineral composition of the test crop. The only exception was the potassium content of wheat straw, which was significantly higher after the application of multi-component fertilizers. Significant differences were observed in this respect between successive years of the study. The highest total uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium by winter wheat plants was noted in the Amofosmag 4 treatment, and the highest total uptake of potassium and calcium was observed in the Amofosmag 3 treatment. Amofosmag 4 was found to be the most efficient fertilizer, which suggests that the nutrients contained in multi-component fertilizers are more readily available to plants.
