Opis:
Four metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd) were assayed in soils within the impact zone of the Miasteczko Slaskie Zinc Smelter (southern Poland). The investigated area is afforested and has been subjected for a long time to intensive deposition of metal-bearing dusts. Soil pHKCl varied broadly from very acidic (pHKCl = 3.4) to slightly alkaline (pHKCl = 7.2). Organic carbon (Corg) content fluctuated within a large range, i.e., 5.5 - 66.4 g kg-1, whereas the cation exchange capacity (CEC) was in most cases markedly low (from 1.4 to 5.9 cmol(+)kg-1), with exception for two sites (C and D) exhibiting values of 26.8 and 15.1 cmol(+)kg-1, respectively. Total Zn, Pb and Cd contents exceeded manifold their respective levels in the Earth crust (reference value - RV)) as well as those suggested as background levels for Poland (BLP). The assessment of the contamination of soils by these metals was undertaken on the basis of geoaccumulation indices (lgeo), contamination factors Cl and degrees of contamination (Cdeg). The overall metal contamination represented practically two classes: low contamination for Cu; considerable to extreme contamination (in ascending order) for Zn, Cd, and Pb. The contribution (BLP-based assessment) of each metal to the degree of contamination index varied from 2.14 % (for Cu), via 26.33% (for Zn) to quite equally for Cd and Pb, both representing 35.22% and 36.32, respectively. It is worth pointing out that copper was the sole metal to threaten the least (Figure 1) the soils of the investigated ecosystem.

Opis:
The research aimed to assess the effect of bottom sediment on the content, bioaccumulation and translocation of heavy metals in maize biomass. The investigations were conducted in 2006-2007 as a pot experiment on light soil of the granulometric composition of weakly-loamy sand. The experimental design comprised 3 treatments: without sediment (I), a 5% sediment admixture (II) and a 10% sediment admixture to the soil (III). Bottom sediment was added to the soil in the first year of the investigations. The content of Zn, Cu, Ni. Pb, Cd and Cr was determined using the ICP-EAS method in the plant material after its dry mineralization and ash solution in HNO3. The uptake of the above-mentioned metals by maize was computed alongside their bioaccumulation and translocation coefficients. The effect of bottom sediment admixture on heavy metal concentrations in maize was determined to be varied, e.g. a 5% dose of sediment added to soil decreased the content of all the analyzed heavy metals in the biomass of maize aerial parts, whereas a 10% admixture increased the content of Cu, Ni, Pb and Cr. The values of bioaccumulation coefficients revealed that an admixture of both doses of bottom sediment led to a decreased accumulation of Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr and Ni (5% dose) in maize aerial biomass. Moreover, the plant more easily accumulated Zn, Cd and Cu than Cr, Ni or Pb. Permissible amounts of heavy metals in plants to be used as animal fodder were not exceeded in the maize biomass.
Schemat doświadczenia obejmował 3 obiekty: bez osadu (I), z dodatkiem 5% osadu (II) i dodatkiem 10% osadu do gleby (III). Osad denny dodano do gleby w pierwszym roku badań.

Heavy metal content in bottom sediments of the Kłodnica River was assayed. Seven sample points were localized along the river course, from the source of the Kłodnica to the tributary inflow to the Odra river in Kędzierzyn-Koźle. In the middle part of the Kłodnica river course high concentrations of iron and manganese were observed. This was caused by the inflow of underground water from a coal mine. High content of lead was probably caused by exploitation of lead mines, which had occurred in the river basin in the past. The results of our investigation showed that bottom sediment contamination by heavy metals is similar as in the other Upper Silesia rivers. In contrast, the comparison with sediments from other regions of Poland shows that the contamination in the Kłodnica river was higher. This paper shows that the monitoring of the Kłodnica river bottom sediments should be undertaken in the future.

Opis:
The importance of nickel (Ni) in the environment is an issue that is gaining broader recognition. While nickel is an element essential for plants, it is also a heavy metal. Nickel is a component of nine metalloenzymes, including urease, which participates in urea hydrolysis. It also helps some plants to protect themselves against pathogens and herbivorous insects. There are many sources of Ni in the environment, which can be a problem because at higher concentrations this element is toxic to plants and other living organisms. Therefore, standards have been defined for the Ni content in air, water, soil and plants. Its content is monitored in the air. More and more frequently, attention is paid to this element as an allergen in humans. In the world, attempts have been made to phytoextract nickel from contaminated soils using nickelphilous plants, the so-called hyperaccumulators, and even to recover the metal from these plants by so-called phytomining. On the other hand, nickel-containing fertilizers are marketed and used in cases of nickel deficiency in plants. In industry, this element is primarily used for the production of steel and alloys. The most recent application of nickel is related to graphene, which was invented 10 years ago. Although nickel contamination does not occur in Poland, we cannot rule out this risk in the future. Thus, it is important to monitor the fate of nickel in the environment.

Opis:
Heavy metals entering aquatic ecosystems from natural and anthropogenic sources are a significant water pollution problem. They accumulate in organisms living in aquatic ecosystems, and threaten human health by entering food chains. This study was carried out to assess the Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn contamination concentrations with multivariate statistical analysis in muscle tissue of the European catfish (Silurus glanis L., 1758) caught from Kılıçkaya Reservoir. The target tissue where heavy metals are stored and the muscle tissue, as it is the most edible part of the fish, were used in this paper. Contamination concentrations of heavy metals expressed in μg g-1 were determined with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. As a result, maximum values of heavy metal concentrations in muscle tissue of Silurus glanis samples were measured at 0.03 μg g-1 for Cd, 0.37 μg g-1 for Cr, 3.59 μg g-1 for Cu, 3.32 μg g-1 for Mn, 0.68 μg g-1 for Ni, 0.43 μg g-1 for Pb and 23.15 μg g-1 for Zn. The correlation between Zn, Cd, Cr, Mn and Cu concentrations was very strong and significantly positive (r=0.818**, r=0.931**). Principal component analysis revealed two components explaining 94.50% of the total variance. The first component is dominated by Cu, Mn and Cd, while the second component is dominated by Ni and Zn. It is thought that the metals that dominate the first and second components are generally accumulated due to environmental factors and partially due to the geological structure of the region. According to the hierarchical clustering analysis results, 2 different groups were distinguished. The first group includes Cr, Pb, Ni, Cd, Cu and Mn, while the second group contains only Zn. Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni and Zn were below the FAO and EU recommended limits for fish, while Pb was found above the EU recommended limit. In this case, it poses a risk in terms of food safety and human health. Hence, it will be very beneficial to take the necessary measures immediately.

Opis:
Zinc (Zn) is an important element for the proper plant growth and development. However, Zn is also a metal commonly used in the industry, which may cause its excessive accumulation in soil. High soil Zn content leads to its increased uptake by plants growing near industrialized areas. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) live in symbiosis with the majority of plant species. These fungi have the ability to reduce Zn uptake by plants, when this element is present in an increased concentration in the plant root zone. An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of AMF on Zn uptake by lettuce plants grown in rockwool at increasing levels of Zn in the nutrient solution. This effect was investigated at two P levels in the nutrient solution, i.e. 40 mg P (optimal for lettuce) and 10 mg P dm-3. Mycorrhizal parameters, yield, content of dry matter, ascorbic acid, glucose, fructose and sucrose as well as the plant’s nutritional status in P, Cu, Mn, Mo, Fe and Zn were determined in the study. The effectiveness of mycorrhization of lettuce grown in rockwool was proven in the study. AMF reduced the Zn content in lettuce grown under excessive Zn concentrations in the root zone. Moreover, this decrease was greater in plants receiving the nutrient solution with a lower concentration of P. Additionally, mycorrhiza decreased the content of Cu, Fe, Mn and Mo in lettuce, despite an optimal (not increased) concentration of these micronutrients in the nutrient solution supplied to plants. Arbuscular mycorrhiza did not affect the plant yield, content of ascorbic acid, glucose, fructose, sucrose or the content of P in lettuce leaves.

Opis:
The study was carried out on forest soils in the vicinity of a copper ore tailings facility and a copper smelter in Lower Silesia, Poland. Soil and litter samples were collected in the surroundings of the tailings facility under pine stands different in age (50, 18 and 11 years old) and under poplar stands (same age as the pine stands) located at an increasing distance from the copper smelter (0.5 km, 1.5 km and 2.1 km). The purpose of the study was to describe the effect of copper mining and smelting on forest soils. The following were determined in the collected soil and litter samples: pH in distilled water electrometrically with a pH meter and total concentrations of Cu, Zn and Pb after digestion with perchloric acid (1:10) using the ICP-ES technique. Very high pH values were found in all organic horizons, which can evidence the alkalizing effect of dusts from the objects. In all the forest soils, the highest total concentrations of all the analyzed elements were found in humus layers, decreasing in deeper horizons of the soil profile. The total concentration of Cu, Pb and Zn was much higher in forest soils under poplar stands in the vicinity of the copper smelter. The concentration of all the elements decreased rapidly with the distance from the smelter. The concentration of Cu, Pb and Zn was higher than found in the vicinity of the objects on the arable soils. This can indicate a secondary rise in heavy metal concentration in the topsoil caused by the presence of a tree stand.
W ektopróchnicach wszystkich badanych gleb stwierdzono najwyższą całkowitą zawartość Cu, Zn i Pb, a zawartość pierwiastków malała w głąb profilu glebowego.

The total content of the metals was determined by the ICP-AES method following dry mineralisation in a muffle furnace at 450°C and dissolving the ash in HCl (1:1). Fractions of Fe, Zn and Cr were isolated by the 3-step sequential fractionation method proposed by the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR). This study has shown that the analysed organic materials had different content of the determined metals. The largest amount of Mg was found in litter from laying hens and the largest amounts of Fe, Cr and Zn were in litter from broiler chickens. The smallest amount of Mg was found in swine manure, Fe and Cr were the least abundant in litter from laying hens, and the lowest Zn content was in bovine manure. The content of these four heavy metals was significantly differentiated by the origin of fertiliser. The exchangeable fraction F1 had the smallest share in the total Fe content among all the fertilisers. As for chromium, this fraction made the smallest contribution to the total Cr content in litter from laying hens and broilers while the reducible fraction F2 was the smallest part of the total content in both types of manure. Fraction F1 of zinc was the smallest in the total content in swine and bovine manure and while the oxidisable fraction F3 made up the smallest share in the total content of this metal in litter from broilers.

The experiment was conducted on three cultivars of canola (Brassica napus L.): Exceed, Cyclone and Legend, with the objective of investigating the alleviation of the rhizospheric lead toxicity by exogenous potassium. Seeds were germinated in pots and when plants were twenty-day-old, lead @15.0 and 30.0 mg kg-1 soil was added to pots. Plants were foliar sprayed twice with KCl solution. Plants were arranged in a completely randomized design. Various growth and production parameters were evaluated at physiological maturity. The fresh and dry weight of stems increased by 17.6% and 25.6%, correspondingly, when the plants were treated with KCl as compared to the control, but decreased by 20.4%, and 13.9%, respectively, in plants treated with 15.0 mg kg-1 of lead. These reductions in weight were higher under 30.0 mg kg-1 of lead applications. Roots (fresh and dry weight) of plants under the dual combination of lead and potassium decreased but this reduction was lower than in plants treated with lead only, which confirmed that potassium alleviated the toxic effect of the lead metal. The seeds (number and total yield) also decreased due to lead toxicity. The seeds (number and total yield) of plants under the dual combination of lead and potassium decreased, but this reduction was lower than in plants treated with lead only, which proved that potassium alleviated the toxic effect of lead.

Opis:
The progressive degradation of soils is a recently increasing environmental problem. The risk of soil degradation may be associated, for example, with landslides, flooding, soil erosion. However, these are relatively rare phenomena compared to the risk of chemical degradation caused by human activity. Given the limited research on the positive effect of miscanthus biochar on soil properties, a study was carried out aimed at determining changes in pH, electrical conductivity, sorption properties, and mobility of selected heavy metals in sandy soil treated with various chemicals. Biochar used in the study was produced at a temperature of 300°C. The addition of biochar to soil generally increased the pH value, regardless of the type of chemical degradation. The study revealed a decrease in the hydrolytic acidity value and, at the same time, no significant changes in the content of alkaline cations and sorption capacity of the biochar-treated soil. The best effect on reducing the mobility of trace elements was achieved by adding biochar to the soil supplemented with acidifying substances. Bearing in mind the current agricultural and environmental problems, there is a need to increase the effectiveness of biochar and to direct its action to improve specific soil properties.

Opis:
The impact of adding a natural clay sorbent such as halloysite on the content of selected heavy metals in the biomass of common orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) was studied in a pot experiment. The study was conducted on mucky soil enriched anthropogenically with heavy metals, whose values exceeded permissible standards of soil quality and values of the geological background. The experiment included three variants with differentiated percentage of halloysite, i.e. 10%, 30% and 50%, as well as two control cultivations. The results confirm the impact of halloysite on the physicochemical properties of soil, consisting in increased soil pH and sorption capacity. Addition of halloysite to soil also differentiated the quantity of crop yield and concentration of heavy metals in the plant and soil. Halloysite was found to have an inconsistent impact on the concentration of heavy metals in the biomass of common orchardgrass, which was proven by some elevation in the level of heavy metals and a higher bioaccumulation factor (BAF). Halloysite constituting 50% of the mass of substrate substantially increased the consumption of Pb and reduced the sorption of Cr. Addition of halloysite stabilised Zn and Cu in soil. The results of our preliminary investigation indicate that addition of halloysite to soils with excessive concentrations of heavy metals influences the level of soil sorption to the extent which may be effective for soil remediation.
