Opis:
The paper deals with the study upon changes within the physical and water properties of murshic endofibric histosols in the drainage meadow object Supraśl Dolna. The scope of studies includes the description of the soil profiles, thickness of diagnostic layer, bulk density, full water capacity, porosity, ash content, and peat decomposition. The long-term investigation carried out in 1982–2015 allows for observing the changes within these soils. The changes were studied in two habitats: wet and dry. In wet habitat, the groundwater flowed 30–98 cm below land surface and supplied the rhizosphere zone. Dynamics of groundwater surface were dependent on the size of precipitation during vegetation period and peat decomposition degree within the soil profile. In the dry habitat, the level of groundwater decreased up to 110 cm (below peat layer). Adverse water conditions in the dry habitat (temporal and long-term water deficiency) caused the increase in bulk density to 0.405 g·cm-3; simultaneously, a decrease in full water capacity to 82.5%, as well as faster peat mineralization occurred. In wet habitat, physical and water properties of murshic endofibric histosols were not significantly altered. In order to inhibit the peat decomposition rate and delay the peatland degradation, optimum moisture content should be maintained within the soil profile along with rational meadow management.

Opis:
Global climate change is causing water imbalances in many regions of the world to exceed evaporation over rainfall, leading to negative environmental consequences and economic losses. An effective way to reduce the water loss due to evaporation from the free surface of water bodies is the use of ultra-thin surface films of special additives. Insufficient stability and significant cost of additives based on fatty alcohols (hexadecanol, octadecanol and their mixtures) necessitate searching for new effective and more economical additives to reduce the water loss due to evaporation. A series of long-term (84 day) experimental studies of the effect of ultra-thin layers of polydimethylsiloxanes PDMS100 and PDMS-200 with a thickness of 1 μm on the rate of evaporation of water from the free surface was conducted under the indoor laboratory conditions. Both the dynamics of change in time of daily values of the effect of evaporation retardation by PDMS films, and total effect from the beginning of experiment were obtained. The maximum daily effects of evaporation retardation were obtained on the 6th day of the study; they are 39.5% for the PDMS-200 film and 32.9% for the PDMS-100 film, respectively. Linear correlations are obtained between the values of the mass transfer coefficient and the free surface temperature for water without additives, as well as for the same free surfaces with ultra-thin PDMS films. Overall integral efficiency of evaporation retardation by the PDMS-200 film with a thickness of 1 μm for 84 days was equal to 17.2%, while for the PDMS-100 film of the same thickness a reduction of evaporation by 5.7% was obtained. Due to the long-term activity, ultra-thin films of polydimethylsiloxanes, especially PDMS-200, can be a profitable alternative to the use of monolayers based on fatty alcohols.

Opis:
Post-exploitation opencast pits constitute a final stage of mining activities and turning them into public utility facilities is taking place now by their water reclamation. They constitute basins without outflows with the depth of 15 to 69 m and areas ranging from 2.5 to 692 ha. The bottoms of these basins are situated in pyrite-containing Miocene formations. Products of Fe2S weathering comprise sulphuric acid and iron compounds – sulphate II and sulphate III. This study presents the basic parameters of the reservoirs constructed in the final opencast pits of the “Konin” and “Adamów” brown coal mine,s as well as the properties of the formations making up the bottoms of two water reservoirs under construction: Lubstów and Władysławów. It is evident from the performed investigations that these formations are characterised by very acid reaction and very high exchangeable acidity. The total sulphur content ranges from 446 to 962 mg·kg -1 of the ground and that of sulphate sulphur – from 71 to 187 mg·kg -1 of the ground. The chemism of these grounds will exert influence on the quality of water accumulating in the opencast pits during the initial period of their spontaneous flooding. Together with the increase of the capacity of these reservoirs, the contact of waters with boulder clays of the Warta River glaciation abounding in calcium compounds will increase and concentrations of calcium ions in the waters of the reservoirs will also grow.

Opis:
In this study, the groundwater quality and spatial distribution of the Basra province in the south of Iraq was assessed and mapped for drinking and irrigation purposes. Groundwater samples (n = 41) were collected from deep wells in the study area to demonstrate, estimate and model the Water Quality Index (WQI). The analysis of water samples integrated with GIS-based IDW technique was used to express the spatial variation in the study area with consideration of WQI. The physicochemical parameters, including pH, sodium (Na+), electrical conductivity (EC), chloride (Cl-), total dissolved solids (TDS), calcium (Ca2+), nitrate (NO3-), sulfate (SO42-), magnesium (Mg2+), and bicarbonate (HCO3-) were identified for groundwater quality assessment. The results of calculated WQI classify groundwater into three sorts. The results of WQI showed that 2.5%, 2.5% and 95% of the groundwater samples were classified as poor/very poor/unsuitable for drinking, respectively. The GIS tools integrated with statistical techniques are utilized for spatial distribution and description of water quality. Correlation analysis of groundwater data revealed that some parameters have actually a relationship that is strong with the other parameters and they share a common source of origin. Multivariate statistical techniques, especially cluster analysis (CA) and factor analysis (FA), were applied for the evaluation of spatial variations of forty-one selected groundwater samples. Cluster analysis confirmed that some different locations of wells have comparable sourced elements of water pollution, whereas factor analysis yielded three factors which are accountable for groundwater quality variations, clarifying more than 72% of the total variance of the data and permitted to group the preferred water quality. MultiLayer Perceptron (MLP) models were applied in modeling the water quality index. Comparing different result values of the MLP network suggested that the values of MSE and r for the selected model are 0.1940 and 0.9998, respectively. Finally, it can be revealed that the MLP network precisely predicted the output, i.e. the WQI values.
