Opis:
Water treatment annually produces a huge amount of Drinking Water Treatment Sludge (DWTS) wastes. The latter causes environmental problems in Morocco in terms of energy and pollution. Therefore, cost-effective and eco-friendly solutions for managing them should be proposed in order to reduce the frequency of storage along with transportation costs. In this paper, a thermodynamic analysis of DWTS wastes was conducted based on the isosteric heat and compensation theory. Different results concerning the mineralogical identification of sludges were established. Findings revealed that the by-product of water purification was mainly composed of aluminum, silica and iron hydroxides, with pH varying between 6.23 and 6.85. The suspended matter was between 18.3 and 19.6 m/l. The volatile matter of the three sludge samples was between 18 and 21%. The measured dry matter content was between 13.41 and 15.23%. The experimental tests were performed under temperatures from 45 and 60 °C, the experimental data of the sorption curves were fitted by using several models of correlation. Furthermore, the analysis showed that the Peleg’s model perfectly described the isotherm curves in the activities ranging from 0 to 90%. The net isosteric heats of sorption of the three hydroxide sludge from the Moroccan treatment station: $S_k$, $S_m$ and $S_s$, were determined for desorption and adsorption. Moreover, it was revealed that the equilibrium water content rising lead contributed to the reduction of the net isosteric heat and the entropy of sorption. Finally, the enthalpy-entropy compensation showed that the sorption mechanism involved was enthalpy driven.

A conventional water treatment plant (WTP) typically involves coagulation-flocculation processes to remove suspended particles and colloids in raw water. The process generates a large volume of alum sludge with high aluminum content, which is discharged into a river with improper treatment. The sludge may cause a potential risk to human health, and disrupt the life of river biota. The aims of this study were to determine the physical and chemical characteristics of alum sludge from Surabaya WTP, and to compare them with those of alum sludge from other plants in Indonesia and developing countries. The alum sludge sample was obtained from the Surabaya WTP in Indonesia. The results showed that the alum sludge had a pH value of 7.47, volatile solids of 12,696 mg/L, total suspended solids of 12,511 mg/L, chemical oxygen demand (COD) 9666.7 mg/L, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) 1082.5 mg/L, and sludge volume index 114.18 mL/g. The sludge had high aluminum and iron concentrations. The aluminum content of the sludge was 1194 mg/L, iron 515 mg/L, chromium 0.217 mg/L, and copper 0.559 mg/L. Having a BOD/COD ratio of 0.1, the alum sludge contained high level of nonbiodegradable organic matter.

The "Soda Mątwy" plant in Inowrocław produces light and heavy soda ash by means of the Solvay method, and the production process is associated with the formation of highly saline waste, which can adversely affect all elements of the environment. In view of the existing threats, attempts are undertaken to limit the quantity and improve the quality of post-production sewage. The aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of activities to protect the water in the area of the soda production plant in Inowrocław. The assessment of their effectiveness was based on the analysis of the current level of chloride concentration reduction at 4 measurement points around the plant and determination of the trend for further changes. In all piezometers, the concentration of chloride ions has decreased and showed the same tendency in subsequent years, which allows draw conclusions confirming high effectiveness of the activities related to water protection.

Opis:
Untreated alum sludge from Surabaya water treatment plant (WTP), which contained high concentration of alum was directly discharged into Surabaya River. It might cause problems because of the accumulation of aluminum in the lower part of the river. Alum could be recovered from the drinking water sludge using the electrolysis method. Aims of this study were to determine the optimum pH and electrical current for electrolysis using carbon-silver electrodes to recover aluminum coagulant from the sludge, and to determine the amount of the recovered alum. The sludge was acidified prior to electrolysis. Acidification was done by adding sulfuric acid at pH 3 and 4. Polarization test was conducted at 100, 200, and 300 mA, in order to determine the optimum electrical current. The electrolysis was performed in one compartment batch recirculation reactor, using silver as cathode and carbon as anode for 10 hours. Values of pH were measured every hour. The precipitated matter in the cathode was weighed, and analysed by means of Inductively Coupled Plasma. The optimum conditions of the electrolysis were achieved at initial pH 3 and electrical current 300 mA. The electrolysis resulted in the highest precipitate of 2.6112 g in the cathode.

Opis:
In the paper, the results of studies on changes in the concentration of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the reject water coming from aerobic stabilization of sewage sludge process were given. The sewage sludge samples originating from a treatment of municipal wastewater treatment plant and an industrial coking wastewater treatment plant were investigated. A technological study was conducted using a municipal sewage sludge (control sample) and a mixture of municipal and industrial sewage sludge simultaneously. Aerobic stabilization of sewage sludge process was carried out for 21 days. The concentration of PAHs was determined at the beginning of the experiment (day 0) and in seven-day intervals: after 7, 14 and 21 days. The initial concentration of PAHs in the reject water coming from the municipal sewage sludge was over 44 g/dm3. Industrial sewage sludge was heavily loaded with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In a reject water of the mixture of municipal and industrial sludge, the initial content of PAHs reached over 5200 g/dm3. During aerobic stabilization of sewage sludge, a decrease in PAHs concentration in reject water was observed. After 21 days of the experiment, the decrease of the sum of analyzed PAHs was in the range of 62–98%.

In this study, the effect of bioaugmentation on the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) performance while treating municipal wastewater and reject water under various temperature conditions was examined. Two lab-scale SBRs, each with the active volume of 8 L were used to perform this research. For bioaugmentation, a mixture of wildliving Bacteria and Archaea in a dose 0.25 mL was added to SBR A, while SBR B was a control one. Both reactors were fed with a mixture of wastewater and 13% v/v reject water. During the experiment, 5 phases with different temperature range were distinguished, each one lasted 14 d. The temperatures were investigated in 5°C increments, i.e. 20, 25, 30, 25 and 20°C. The obtained results indicated that in the bioaugmented reactor (SBR A), lower concentrations of NH4+–N, TSS, NO2-–N in effluent were observed as compared to control (SBR B). While for NH4+–N, regardless the temperature, the observed differences were statistically significant. Importantly, in both SBRs, the process was carried out in a stable way.

Opis:
There are significant municipal concerns relating to the use of surfactants and enzymes in the process of wastewater treatment. Treatment plants use different techniques to remove impurities from water. As wastewater treatment plants use the latest technology to remove contaminants from water, there are high costs, and sometimes an enforcement of regulations is lax. Still, many municipalities across the country prohibit the use of surfactants and enzymes entering wastewater treatment because of the harmful effects of these products on the sewer lines and high damage costs. Surfactant compounds are organic. Their molecules include water-soluble and oil or an insoluble component. These molecular compounds seek the water surface and chemically reduce the boundaries between oil and water. When surfactants are in the water, they absorb into the soil and can cause injury to plants and organic organisms, but people find surfactants and enzymes useful in cleaning agents for emulsifying and dispersing oil and grease. Scientists have found that at least some surfactants are toxic to ecosystems, people and animals, but they have not been able predict far-reaching consequences. And now the most important question is how to solve this problem or how to reduce these negative effects. In this paper we tried to remove surfactants from waste water with an activated sludge system.

This article presents the results of experimental studies pertaining to the suckling improvement of secondary clarifier in an aeration station in Almaty. According to the obtained research results, the work of secondary clarifiers was evaluated for the removal of suspended solids, concentration of returned sludge and sediment moisture. The technical specifications of aerations, secondary settling tanks and cesspool emptier in the aeration station of Almaty were defined. Additionally, it was shown that the use of the articulated sucker with movable scrapers can increase the efficiency of cleaning the bottom of the circular tanks. In this practical test, the proposed suckling radial settler in aeration station of Almaty during the year showed that the sucker reduces the costs for the installation and maintenance of cesspool emptier and has no damaging effects on the bottom of the sump.

This study aimed at determining the level of pollution from heavy metals that are deposited from air in the area of Gllogoc. The main goal was to identify the emission sources of pollution by using mosses as bio indicators. In this study area, the mining of Fe-Ni (Industrial Ferronickel Complex) is believed to strongly influence the level of heavy metals. The mining and production activity of Fe-Ni affects the soil, water and air. As the air pollution (from liberated aerosols of Industrial Ferronickel Complex) and the deposition products of this pollution are harmful not only locally but also can pollute the environmental at extended distances, the use of mosses allows analyzing the content and origin of the pollution from heavy metals. ICP was used for the determination of heavy metals in moss samples. The use of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), dendograms and other statistical procedures, permitted to understand the source of the air pollution from heavy metals.
