Opis:
The article presents research on the assessment of electrolytic conductivity changes of sludge during the process of its autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD), which takes place in a two-stage installation system, operating in a municipal sewage-treatment plant. In the years 2012–2014 sludge was studied and the results were analyzed. Thickened sludge in the intermediate tank, which was then directed to installation reactors, was examined. Conductivity was measured in each tank. In this manner collected results made it possible to follow the changes of this index at consecutive stages of the system. The results were statistically analyzed and it was determined to what degree, as a result of an objective process, the values of processed sludge conductivity would change. The conclusions from the carried-out studies and from own experiments are also presented.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the physical and chemical properties of the sewage sludge from “Pomorzany” and “Zdroje” municipal wastewater treatment plants located in Szczecin, Poland. The paper presents the outcomes of SEM observation of dried and stabilized sewage sludge. The research on the obtained materials was conducted using reference methods; the images from a scanning electron microscope were used. The amount of sewage sludge produced with the methods of its management was presented. The technology of sludge management is based on its dehydration up to dry weight content of roughly 20% and then drying in contact dryers up to 90–92% dry weight, separately in both plants. Dried sewage sludge is subsequently burned in mechanical grid boilers at “Pomorzany” WWTP. The analyzed materials were characterized by the pH of 7.90–8.42, dry mass and average organic matter content were 18.949% and 68.903%, respectively. The elements identified in the largest amount on the surface of analyzed materials included calcium, iron, phosphorus, sulphur and silicon. The amount of phosphorus ranging from 1.82 to 3.44% indicates the possibility of using sewage sludge as organic fertilizer product or an alternative source of phosphorus.

The article presents the results of the analysis, which was carried out in 2015-2017 on the example of autothermal installation of thermophilic sludge stabilization (ATAD) in a sewage treatment plant in Giżycko. The installation was created in 2003 as the first of its kind and still remains operational. The purpose of the conducted research was to assess the suitability of the analyzed technological parameters as tools that can be used by operators to determine the actual possibilities of changing the operating conditions of the installation or to develop an optimization strategy to reduce the energy demand. The dry mass content and organic dry mass content was used as the assessment indicators. In the analysed period, the sludge from the process contained from 47.47% to 60.80% of organic matter in the dry mass of the sludge. The organic dry matter decrease due to the process was also calculated, and it ranged from 26.4% to 48.7%. The amount of sludge undergoing the process and the amount of electricity consumption were also analysed. On this basis, the energy consumption indicators in the ATAD process were calculated.

In the paper, the results of studies on changes in the concentration of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the reject water coming from aerobic stabilization of sewage sludge process were given. The sewage sludge samples originating from a treatment of municipal wastewater treatment plant and an industrial coking wastewater treatment plant were investigated. A technological study was conducted using a municipal sewage sludge (control sample) and a mixture of municipal and industrial sewage sludge simultaneously. Aerobic stabilization of sewage sludge process was carried out for 21 days. The concentration of PAHs was determined at the beginning of the experiment (day 0) and in seven-day intervals: after 7, 14 and 21 days. The initial concentration of PAHs in the reject water coming from the municipal sewage sludge was over 44 g/dm3. Industrial sewage sludge was heavily loaded with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In a reject water of the mixture of municipal and industrial sludge, the initial content of PAHs reached over 5200 g/dm3. During aerobic stabilization of sewage sludge, a decrease in PAHs concentration in reject water was observed. After 21 days of the experiment, the decrease of the sum of analyzed PAHs was in the range of 62–98%.

Opis:
Disintegration of sewage sludge leads to the breakdown of the structure of the sewage floc and release of intracellular fluids. This allows for easy removal of organic compounds that are contained in the cells during further processes of treatment of waste and processing of sludge. One of the methods of disintegration is the use of ultrasound field energy. Depending on the applied process parameters (exposure time, intensity), coagulation or dispersion of the sludge flocs may occur. The aim of the research was to determine the amount of sonication energy supplied to the sludge and the related costs of the disintegration process. The study used digested sewage sludge, which was exposed to ultrasound field energy of different intensity (from 1.6 W/cm2 to 3.8 W/cm2) and exposure time (from 2 to 120s). The sewage sludge sonication process was conducted using Sonics VCX-1500 ultrasonic processor with a maximum output power of 1500W. The vibration frequency of the ultrasound field of the generator was 20 kHz, whereas the maximum wavelength for the 100% amplitude, was 39.42 µm. Energy demand was recorded during each measurement and the amount of sonication energy supplied to the system was calculated relative to dry matter. The experiments showed an increase in the demand for energy along with the extension of the exposure time and the increase in the intensity of the ultrasound field. For two of sludge samples with comparable dry matter content, the sonication energy values were similar.

The paper aimed at comparing the yield and concentrations of zinc, copper and nickel in maize cultivated in soil fertilized with two different sewage sludge with yielding of maize fertilized with manure and solely with mineral fertilizers. The experiment was conducted in plastic pots, of which each contained 8.5 kg of air-dried soil with granulometric composition of light sandy loam and neutral pH. Sewage sludge used for the experiment originated from two municipal sewage sludge treatment plants in Krzeszowice (sludge I) and Niepołomice (sludge II), while manure from a private farm in Czernichów district. The test plant was maize (Zea mays) cultivated for 74 days and then harvested for green forage. On the basis of conducted research it was found that various fertilizer combinations applied in the experiment had a significant influence on the test plant yielding. All compared fertilizer variants allowed maize to produce statistically significantly higher yield in comparison with the yield harvested from the unfertilized soils. Fertilization with sewage sludge I supplemented with mineral treatment and application of solely mineral salts proved the most beneficial for the maize yield. Applied fertilizer combinations affected the content of microelements. The highest concentrations of nickel in maize green mass were assessed in plant samples from the unfertilized object, whereas zinc and copper from mineral fertilization variant. Except of zinc, introducing additional metal doses did not influence their increased content in plant organs. Soil enrichment with zinc contained in sewage sludge I and II (respectively 77.4 mg and 49.9 mg ∙ pot-1) contributed to its elevated concentration in maize roots but at the same time this metal content statistically significantly decreased in maize shoots in comparison with the amounts determined in plants fertilized with mineral materials.

Opis:
Applying vermicomposting process for sewage sludge treatment is a low-cost method which has been gaining a growing number of supporters around the world. In Poland it is still rather unpopular method. The following publication presents the results of 12 years (2004–2015) of research and experiments on the use of red Californian earthworm in Wastewater Treatment Plant in Zambrów. Among others, the results of analyzing vermicompost quality were shown concerning selected micro and macro elements, fertilizing value and sanitary condition. Cumulative content of the examined heavy metals was highest in 2004 and reached over 1200 mg-1 kg s.m., whereas the lowest content of 520 mg-1 kg s.m. was observed in 2012. The study results indicate that in the entire 12-year research period vermicompost met the standards for organic-mineral fertilizers, which means it contained over 20% of organic substance in reference to dry mass and over 1% of total nitrogen and 0.5% of phosphorous in reference to phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5). During the entire research period no living eggs of intestinal parasites Ascaris sp., Trichuris sp., Toxocara sp. and Salmonella bacteria were observed in the vermicompost. The research concerning red Californian earthworm proved substantial mineralization and humification of sludge. The application of EM formula considerably quickened the process and the achieved modifications in the vermicompost structure and content.

Biofiltration is the biological degradation of gaseous pollutants and is one methods of deodorizing disruptive malodorous gases. Micro-organisms play a central role in this process. As a result of their work, non-toxic compounds are produced. Biofiltration belongs to the methods that are low to non-waste producing. This is an alternative to classical methods used so far. The research on the improvement of process parameters and increasing its efficiency is being carried out. The applied solutions referred to above still constitute unresolved problem and for this reason are seldom used. This article presents a mechanism for biofiltration of odorous gases. The article is devoted to the mechanism of malodorous gases biofiltration on the basis of a study carried out on the half-scale support.

The aim of the study was to present the dynamics of changes in the number of selected microorganisms in the rhizosphere zone of grasses two years after the application of sewage sludge. The study was conducted on four specially prepared research plots along the main roads in Bialystok. Three doses of sewage sludge were applied: 0 (control), 7.5 and 15 kg/m2. Then the plots were seeded with two mixtures of lawn grasses: Eko and Roadside. Samples of roots with soil were collected three times during the vegetation period of 2012 (April, July and October) and assayed for the total number of bacteria, the number of Gram-negative bacteria, the number of Pseudomonas fluorescens, the number of amylolytic and proteolytic bacteria. Microbiological tests of the rhizosphere showed seasonal variations of all investigated microbiological parameters. The greatest average of the total number of bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and proteolytic bacteria was observed on the plots in April, amylolytic bacteria in July while in the case of Pseudomonas fluorescens was observed on the plots in October. The time of measurement had the biggest impact on the number of microorganisms. An increased number of microorganisms was observed on all plots in April. Whereas, the fertilization with sewage sludge and grass mixtures did not affect the microbiological parameters.

The article presents the results of the research from several years of exploitation of the vermiculture plots located in the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Zambrów. It is the only facility in Poland where the vermicompost from municipal sewage sludge has been produced continuously since 2004 (for 16 years). The results of tests of ready-made vermicomposts conducted regularly twice a year (32 tests) were subjected to a simple statistical analysis. The vermicompost analyses of heavy metals, biogenic compounds, organic matter and selected macroelements were compared with the requirements for mineral-organic fertilizers. In terms of the heavy metals content, the highest total content was observed in the first year of plots exploitation, i.e. in 2004, when it amounted to over 1200 mg-1 kg DM. The lowest sum content of heavy metals in vermicomposts, amounting to 398 mg-1 kg DM, was recorded in 2017. The median total content of heavy metals from all observations was 821 mg-1 kg DM. During the whole research period, the content of nutrients in vermicomposts was high, for nitrogen it ranged from 9.8 g-1 kg DM to 31.1 g-1 kg DM (median 14.3 g-1 kg DM), whereas for phosphorus it ranged from 2.1 g-1 kg DM to 14.5 g-1 kg DM (median 5.5 g-1 kg DM). The content of organic matter in the whole several-year study period was high and ranged from 21.3% DM to 59.0% DM (median 33.1% DM). The conducted research confirmed that the use of California earthworm in the process of municipal sewage sludge vermicomposting results in its good mineralization and humification, and the final product (vermicompost) may be a valuable mineral-organic fertilizer.

Opis:
The predominant method of the sewage sludge management in Poland is land disposal. However, since 01/01/2013, this method will be prohibited. Therefore, there is a strong need for the development of thermal methods of sludge disposal. In Polish legal system sewage sludge may be named as biomass or waste. For the purposes of determining the obligations of environmental regulations the definition of the Minister of Environment should be used. When disposing of sewage sludge in an amount up to 1% by weight of fuel, emission standards for fuel do not change. At the disposal of sewage in quantities of more than 1%, should be conducted continuous measurement of emissions, including HCl, HF, and continuous measurements of flue gas parameters (as for the installation of waste disposal). In order to meet the requirement to porduce energy from renewable sources we use the definition of Minister of Economy. In this case, in accordance with applicable law, sewage sludge shall be considered as pure biomass, thus it is CO2 neutral. The use of sewage sludge as a fuel requires the determination of fundamental combustible properties. These properties should be in accordance with the requirements put fuels as an energy source. The paper presents the results of a detailed physico-chemical analysis of dried sewage sludge produced in the two Polish wastewater treatment plants. The results were compared with five representatives of biomass fuels: straw of wheat, straw of rape, willow, pine and oak sawdust. Ultimate and proximate analyses include a detailed analysis of fuel and ash. The results clearly indicate that sludge is a very valuable fuel similar to “traditional” biomass.

Opis:
Sewage sludge (SS) is a byproduct of wastewater treatment which is commonly used as fertilizer in the world. However, due to the possible contamination with heavy metals, xenobiotics and fecal pathogens, its application on fields is not so common in Poland. A safer alternative for agricultural use is the SS produced by food industry in small „inhouse” wastewater treatment plants, as substances that are used in its production are usually less harmful. As pretreatment of industrial wastewater is required before dumping the wastewater into common stream, the SS is an abundant byproduct that needs to be managed in an environmentally friendly and cost effective manner. Because the water content in SS is usually high, the dosage and logistics are problematic and thus we propose converting the sewage sludge into solid granular fertilizer in the vermicomposting process. Not only are the weight and volume of product decreased as a result, but also the nutrients such as N, P, and K become concentrated and made more accessible for plants. The SS is also further stabilized and less prone to produce odors and becoming putrid. The aim of this study was the in-depth analysis of the SS process vermicomposting with biochar. The SS was acquired from a local soft drink factory wastewater treatment plant. The batches of SS were inoculated with 20% mature vermicompost and E. fetida worms. Instead of typical bulking agents (like woodchips or straw) powdered biochar was used in the concentrations of 5, 10 and 15% as it exhibits beneficial influence on the process and increase the value of the final product.
