Opis:
Groundwater is a key source of drinking water in Jordan. This study was conducted to assess the suitability of groundwater in major groundwater basins in Jordan for drinking purposes. The groundwater quality data from sixteen sampling stations within one-year-monitoring period from March 2015 to February 2016 were used. Weighted arithmetic water quality index (WQI) with respect to the Jordanian standards for drinking water was used for quality assessment. Sixteen Physical, chemical and microbiological parameters were selected to calculate WQI. The result showed that all physical and chemical parameters were almost below the maximum allowable level based on the Jordanian standards for drinking. On the other hand, the microbiological parameter (i.e. E.coli count) was exceeded the maximum allowable limit in all the studied locations based on the Jordanian standards for drinking water. The computed WQI values range from 40 to 4295. Therefore, out of 16 studied locations, three locations are classified in the “Excellent water” class, nine locations as a “Good water” class, one as a “Poor water” class, two as a “very poor water” class, and one as a “water unsuitable for drinking purpose” class. Furthermore, Escherichia coli is considered the most effective parameter on the determination of WQI in this study. This result highlighted the importance of including the microbiological parameters in any drinking water assessment, since they reflect with other physical and chemical parameters the actual condition of water quality for different purposes.

The research was conducted around reclaimed landfill, located on the suburb of Otwock, around 25 km south-west of Warsaw. The objective of this study was to identify the chemical composition of groundwater and to determine the landfill impact on the chemical composition of groundwater downgrading from the landfill. Otwock landfill is located in very permeable area, where leachate quickly seeps into ground-water and plays a key role in controlling redox condition (and chemical composition of groundwater) of the downgradient area. High concentrations of HCO3-,Cl-, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Fetot. as well as DOC in groundwater downgradient from the landfill (in comparison to background water) likely indicate that groundwater quality is being significantly affected by leachate percolation. Currently, the load of contamination is released from landfill periodically and slowly moves (70 m/y) in the aquifer along the flow direction. The effect of distance of the piezometer from the pollution source was also investigated. As expected, water from the nearest piezometer to the land-fill showed the highest values of contaminant (water temperature, specific electrical conductivity, sodium, iron, chlorides (except for summer and autumn analysis) and calcium (except for winter analysis)). Chemical status of groundwater downgradient from the landfill is poor.

The depletion of aquifer systems in arid and semiarid regions worldwide is causing acute water scarcity and quality degradation, and leading to extensive ecosystem damages. Groundwater is exposed to a variety of anthropogenic water pollution, such as raw wastewater disposal in the Draa Wadi and the use of septic tanks. In this respect, a study performed in some wells of Fezouata (South-east of Morocco) aimed at both discovering the main components of the aquatic subterranean fauna unknown up to now in this area, and the potential relationships between this fauna and the water quality The principal physico-chemical characteristics of water were measured between November 2019 to March 2021 for 15 wells, which were selected considering their position with respect to the pollution sources known in surface. The Fezouata groundwater is distinguished by its high salinity with an increasing gradient from upstream to downstream. The aquatic fauna in the 15 wells showed 12 stygofauna species. In the protected wells which are situated far from the pollution sources, the fauna is dominated by Cirolanidae, Hydrobiidae, Metacrangonctydae, Stenasellidae, and Thermosbaenacea. On the other hand, in the less protected well, close to the pollution sources, the fauna is made of epigean species, such as insect’s larva, mainly Culicidae and Chironomidae. The analysis of the water quality and the subterranean biodiversity shows that the latter decreases with increasing groundwater pollution. It seems that the impact of the acute pollution affected the stygocenose even by reducing drastically the biodiversity.

In this article, the purpose of the research was to study the ecological characteristics of groundwater and central water supply used for drinking and economic activity of the Kievka village. The hydrochemical indicators of the samples were determined with conventional methods, and performed on 16 indicators: pH, electrical conductivity, suspended solids, dry residue, chlorides, sulfates, phosphates, total hardness, sodium, ammonium nitrogen, nitrites, nitrates, chemical oxygen consumption (COD), anionic surfactants (APAS), total iron, and manganese. While assessing the hydrochemical state of drinking water in the village of Kievka, it can be noted the "Altyn-dan" kindergarten and the Kiev secondary school No. 3, exceed the MAC which is determined by certain indicators. As a result of microbiological studies of the water samples from the village of Kievka, it was revealed that the total microbial number is normal. It was determined that a different number of fungi and actinomycites were present in all samples. At the initial concentration, a large concentration of fungi was observed in all samples.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the landfill on the groundwater environment. The assessment of water status in the region of landfill sealed with a layer of clay with a thickness of 0.5 m, was based on the own research and monitoring received from the municipal office, and conducted in 2007–2010. Waters flowing out of the landfill revealed an increase in pollution indicators such as: total organic carbon (TOC), concentrations of PAHs and heavy metals including zinc, cadmium, and chromium. It was demonstrated that the landfill sealed with a clay layer does not reduce the outflow of leachate to groundwater, but also that the purity of these waters is influenced by increased agricultural activity in the areas adjacent to the landfill.

Twenty groundwater samples were collected and then examined for physical (pH, EC, TDS) and chemical (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3−, Cl−, SO42−, NO3) parameters, followed by multivariate statistics to determine the current state of groundwater quality and to assess the suitability of these resources for drinking and irrigation purposes in the Baser Sakhra area localized in Eastern of Algeria. The analysis carried out showed that the cations trend in most of the groundwater samples is on the order of Ca2+˃Na+˃Mg2+˃K+ and the anions trend is on the order of HCO3-˃SO42-˃Cl-. Stabler diagram demonstrated the predominance of Ca2+- HCO3- hydro-chemical facies (80%). Moreover, the parameters, such as sodium adsorption ratio, percentage sodium, residual sodium carbonate, permeability index, Kelly’s ratio, potential salinity, and magnesium hazard were evaluated for the suitability of groundwater for irrigation. The values obtained in this investigation concluded that most of the groundwater samples are suitable for irrigation. From the other approach, the Water Quality Index (WQI) for drinking was also used in the current study. WQI ranged from 72.46 to 506.426, indicating that 40% of the samples were suitable for drinking however, 60% of them belong to the poor to unsuitable category of drinking water in terms of physicochemical properties, according to the World Health Organization norms.

The aim of the study was to assess the qualitative status of groundwater and surface water abstracted for the needs of customers in the city of Nowy Targ. The assessment was based on the results of physicochemical analyses of 62 water samples taken from the water intake on the Biały Dunajec stream in Szaflary (emergency water intake) and 280 samples taken from 6 active groundwater intakes in Nowy Targ. The basic descriptive statistics of manganese, iron, magnesium, calcium, chlorides, sulphates, phosphates, phosphates, ammonia, nitrites, nitrites, nitrates, chromium, zinc, indicators such as: dissolved oxygen, BOD5, suspension, phenols, PUR, pH, total hardness, alkalinity and number of coli bacteria were determined. The water analyses were performed in the period 2004-2016. Basic descriptive statistics of manganese, iron, magnesium, magnesium, calcium, chlorides, sulphates, phosphates, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, chromium and zinc ions, as well as such indicators as: dissolved oxygen, BOD5, suspension, phenols, PEW, pH, total hardness, alkalinity and number of coli bacteria were determined. The quality of the captured waters was classified on the basis of the results obtained, noting that the water from the Biały Dunajec stream corresponds to the A3 purity category due to the microbiological contamination. According to the physicochemical standard, A3 category was also determined on the basis of the phenol concentration, which, however, decreased significantly since 2013, corresponding to category A1. For groundwater, on the other hand, it was established that all analysed indicators corresponded to class I purity grade, i.e. water of a very good quality. The only excess over the values corresponding to this class was recorded for calcium ions, but the classification of water quality has not changed due to the fact that it was caused by natural processes. Taking into account the above-mentioned findings, it was concluded that due to the very good groundwater quality, their intakes should be left as the main source of water for consumers in Nowy Targ, while the surface water intake on the Biały Dunajec stream should be maintained concurrently as an emergency intake.

In this study, the groundwater quality and spatial distribution of the Basra province in the south of Iraq was assessed and mapped for drinking and irrigation purposes. Groundwater samples (n = 41) were collected from deep wells in the study area to demonstrate, estimate and model the Water Quality Index (WQI). The analysis of water samples integrated with GIS-based IDW technique was used to express the spatial variation in the study area with consideration of WQI. The physicochemical parameters, including pH, sodium (Na+), electrical conductivity (EC), chloride (Cl-), total dissolved solids (TDS), calcium (Ca2+), nitrate (NO3-), sulfate (SO42-), magnesium (Mg2+), and bicarbonate (HCO3-) were identified for groundwater quality assessment. The results of calculated WQI classify groundwater into three sorts. The results of WQI showed that 2.5%, 2.5% and 95% of the groundwater samples were classified as poor/very poor/unsuitable for drinking, respectively. The GIS tools integrated with statistical techniques are utilized for spatial distribution and description of water quality. Correlation analysis of groundwater data revealed that some parameters have actually a relationship that is strong with the other parameters and they share a common source of origin. Multivariate statistical techniques, especially cluster analysis (CA) and factor analysis (FA), were applied for the evaluation of spatial variations of forty-one selected groundwater samples. Cluster analysis confirmed that some different locations of wells have comparable sourced elements of water pollution, whereas factor analysis yielded three factors which are accountable for groundwater quality variations, clarifying more than 72% of the total variance of the data and permitted to group the preferred water quality. MultiLayer Perceptron (MLP) models were applied in modeling the water quality index. Comparing different result values of the MLP network suggested that the values of MSE and r for the selected model are 0.1940 and 0.9998, respectively. Finally, it can be revealed that the MLP network precisely predicted the output, i.e. the WQI values.

The quality of groundwater is characterized by several numbers of physical and chemical parameters, which determine the use of water (water supply, irrigation, industry). This search paper is a contribution made to know the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater in the Sahel sub-catchment which belongs to the large Soummam North basin of Algeria. Different multivariate statistical techniques were used such as principal component analysis (PCA), Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) and Diagram Analysis. These analyses are exercised to a dataset formed from 37 boreholes with 12 chemical variables over the entire surface of the watershed. The samples were collected in 2016. The 37 boreholes are one of the main water resources that supply the wilaya of Bouira with drinking water and irrigation. The analysis of water quality using different methods (ACP, HCA and Diagram) resulted in two chemical kinds: (Chloride, calcium sulfate and magnesium), and (Bicarbonate calcium and magnesium). The results have shown that 74% of the boreholes were contaminated, the rest of boreholes were characterized by a good quality and they have not suffered any contamination and can be consumed without any risk.

In order to solve the problem of providing the population with high-quality drinking water, preference is given to the use of groundwater deposits, which differ from surface sources in better quality and are more protected from man-made influences and climate change. Thirty-seven existing groundwater deposits are used for drinking and technical water supply in Lviv region. The distribution of groundwater in the region is very uneven, and in the Eastern Carpathians they are almost non-existent. The main factors of groundwater pollution in most of Ukraine are municipal sewage, livestock effluents, unorganized warehouses for storage of industrial waste, fertilizers and pesticides and other local objects that affect the state of groundwater. The gradual reduction of mineral fertilizer and pesticide usage has led to some improvement in the quality of groundwater, but for some agro-industrial areas the presence of residual pesticides and nitrogen compounds in groundwater remains a relevant problem. This year, there was an increase in the use of mineral fertilizers compared to last year. The aim of this work was to study the compliance of the maximum allowable concentrations of hydrochemical parameters of the wells of the Stryi water intake and to determine the potential impact of anthropogenic factors on water quality. The compliance with the sanitary and hygienic requirements of the hydrochemical parameters of water in the wells of the Stryi water intake was analyzed. The regularities of their changes as well as the presence of wells that have a potentially unstable chemical composition and are prone to deterioration of water quality were determined. The results of studies of related to the impact of self-treatment processes in the river Stryi on the quality of water intake in the city of Stryi showed that the drinking water from artesian wells is of high quality and now there are no negative effects of river water in the Stryi basin on groundwater deposits. The quality of river water is satisfactory for its use in domestic and drinking water supply and for recreational purposes.

The work presented the assessment of household wastewater treatment plants with drainage systems on the quality of groundwater in dug wells and deep water wells in the area of 3 selected communes (Drelów, Dębowa Kłoda and Urszulin), located in the Lublin province in south-eastern Poland. The investigations of the physicochemical composition of water from selected 28 dug wells and 2 deep water wells were conducted from June to July 2020, involving 9 measurement series. The microbiological studies consisted in 4 measurement series. The composition of the wastewater from primary settling tanks discharged to soil via drainage systems located in the vicinity of considered wells was also examined on a single occasion. The studies indicate that the water from wells are significantly polluted with ammonia, nitrites, as well as compounds of natural origin: iron and manganese. The presence of microbiological pollution of fecal origin was noted. The studies clearly indicate the possible pollution of the analyzed well waters with domestic sewage discharged to soil via drainage systems. Therefore, it necessary to take the actions aimed at improving the quality of groundwater in the Lublin province, including limitation of drainage systems, especially in the areas with unfavorable subsurface and hydrological conditions as well as low water supply coverage. The need to introduce changes in legal regulations and strategies for the development of technical infrastructure in counties, favoring the most efficient, as well as simple and inexpensive technologies, was indicated.
