Opis:
The monitoring that was carried out at the landfill specialized in leachate, groundwater and surface water. There were 6 sampling sites. The observed parameters were pH, BOD5, CODCr, conductivity. Leachate reached the high values in all observed parameters. Groundwater samples were collected at two monitoring wells and the sampling site (A, B, C). Surface water was collected from two sampling sites (D, E). The pH showed slightly acid values at all sampling points. The pH of surface water was slightly acid to neutral. Both BOD5 and CODCr values remained stable over the reporting period. The average conductivity value at sampling points D, E remained constant. In line with the Czech National Standard ČSN 75 7221 “Classification of Surface Water Quality” sampling point D belongs to II Water Quality Class – slightly polluted water and sampling site E to Class I water quality – unpolluted water. The authors believe that the fluctuations occurring with regard to the values of certain samples were not caused by the operation of the landfill itself, but were a result of the intense agricultural activity nearby the landfill.

Opis:
The paper presents an evaluation of leachate monitoring data as well as investigation of temporal and seasonal variability of leachate quality. The analysis includes 27 sampling carried out at selected municipal landfill during 7-year observation period. In leachate samples, concentration of Pb, Cu, Zn, Cr, Hg, Cd, Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) and value of pH and electro-conductivity (EC) were determined. Estimation of landfill leachate demonstrated a declining trend in EC, TOC and Zn concentration with time. Concentration of Pb, Hg, Cr, Cd and PAH remained relatively constant with respect to the sampling time, however, the value of pH showed a growing trend due to the decrease of the concentration of the partially ionized free volatile fatty acids. Average concentration of heavy metals in leachate were observed in trace quantities (<1.0 mg·dm-3). There were no statistically significant seasonal variations in concentration of the analyzed parameters, however, the highest concentration of EC, TOC and PAH were observed in summer. The negative correlation of pH with Pb, Cu, Zn, Cr, Hg, Cd indicated a strong connection of leachate’s pH with heavy metals concentration. A cluster analysis allowed to specify two groups of variables: cluster I with TOC as an indicator of organic pollution in leachate and claster II with the rest of parameters. Further systematic monitoring is necessary, but its scope, according to the author, should be redefined.

The paper presents the quality of groundwater around the municipal waste landfill in the town of Kolonia Lipsk. The structure, location and operation of the landfill are presented. The aim of this work was to assess the state of groundwater quality around the reclaimed Municipal Waste Landfill in the city of Kolonia Lipsk, closed in 2012. The research was carried out in 2015 with the frequency of once a quarter for 10 selected indicators characteristic for the water pollution assessment in the area of municipal waste landfills. The water for testing was taken from three piezometers located in the vicinity of tested object, at different distances and at various depths in farm wells. Although the landfill has not been operating since 2012, the contamination of groundwater around the landfill has been identified. The lack of landfill bottom sealing and the lack of surrounding ditches indicate that the condition will last for some time.

The paper deals with the arrangement of mining and environmental monitoring at open-pit mineral deposits using the electromagnetic geophysical method. The characteristic of the method of natural electromagnetic radiation (NEMR) discrete registration for searching geodynamically active faults to increase the safety of mining operations at ore deposits is given by the example of the apatite-nepheline deposit of the Khibiny rock massif. The existence of the dependence of the anomalous values of EMF in the Earth’s pulse electromagnetic field on the stress-strain state of the massif on the basis of electrophysical phenomena occurring in the rock is substantiated. The efficiency of the method for search and mapping of geodynamic active faults is proven. In future, the use of this method will improve the effectiveness of measures taken to predict and prevent dangerous geodynamic phenomena.

This paper presents a time-saving method for monitoring the ecology of a dispersed territory using the delivery of measurement units provided by unmanned aerial vehicles with measurement sensors according to a reverse priority algorithm. It is achievable because of the decreasing mean waiting time of the order inside a queue during low-priority order servicing. The experimental research that confirms the efficiency of the proposed method in the case of delivery distributed measurement systems for low-priority measurement is carried out. The experimental research of the proposed method in the case of one-channel and many-channel SMD that can have an option of order rejection or an in-queue waiting option is conducted in WeBots. The probability distributions in the case of this system applying are compared with similar probability distributions in the case of systems of direct priority applying. Comparison and analysis enable us to conclude that the probability distribution in the case of SMD with a direct priority of delivery tends to decrease and approximates zero. This is related to the fact that means at the end of the queue to be handled have a lower priority, as these means of measurement take longer to handle the order than those at the head of the queue. Thus, the means of a low priority will be serviced in the last charge and there is a constant possibility that in some cases such orders will be rejected. The proposed method enables moderate this situation by using increasing the possibility of servicing the low-priority orders. The method can increase the efficiency of environmental monitoring and pollution emission control.

The location of a significant part of the agricultural territories of Kazakhstan in the risk agriculture zone implies the development and further application of an objective monitoring system for irrigated territories. The purpose of the study was to develop methods for on-the-spot and long-term recognition of irrigated massifs and verification of methods in the conditions of the territories of southern Kazakhstan. The paper describes the methods of on-the-spot recognition of irrigated fields, the general assessment of irrigated areas for the growing season, as well as the method of recognizing promising areas for irrigation. The on-the-spot recognition of the fields is based on the use of such spectral indices as the Global Vegetation Moisture Index, Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, and the xanthophyll index, combined into a single system by the Decision Tree algorithm. The assessment of irrigated areas is based on differences in the physiological state of plants in conditions of normal water supply and plants experiencing a lack of moisture. The evaluation system includes the calculation of the temperature difference according to the corresponding satellite data and the calculation of the difference in vegetation indices for the same period. The difference in vegetation indices in irrigated fields has positive values due to a steady increase in green biomass, and the temperature difference, on the contrary, is negative or zero, since healthy plants, with normal water supply, actively evaporate moisture to maintain optimal temperatures of biochemical processes. To develop these methods, ground data from 2017–2021 were used. Verification of the methods with ground data demonstrated acceptable accuracy (87% in the on-the-spot assessment of irrigated fields; 60–90% in the general assessment of irrigated areas), while the methods have significant potential for further improvement.

The present paper provides the methodology for the environmental monitoring of natural and engineering wastewater systems, which involves the determination of the dichotomous fractal structure of the measuring network, the boundaries of the range and the density of pollution on the Peano and Koch curves, based on the data of the measuring network and the corresponding interpolation and smoothing algorithms, as well as determination of the dynamics of the pollution range using the Bayesian theorem. On the basis of the theory of fractals and the theory of sets, the developed algorithms for monitoring allow determining the structure of the measuring network taking into account the features of the controlled range and the sets of fractal isolines of any configuration with a given accuracy of reflection, which allows predicting the change in the composition of the effluent that comes to the reservoirs from the landscapes and improving the functioning of the equipment and environmental safety of water in general. The established dependence of biogas productivity on the different methods for destruction of the active sludge microorganisms allows determining that the maximum output of biogas occurs when applying the chemical destruction of part of the sludge.

Heavy metal pollution in freshwater ecosystems is a critical issue because it threatens the ecosystem as well as public health. Early detection of these pollutants is therefore essential, and biomarker analysis can be an ideal way to achieve this. Metallothionein (MT) protein is a widely-used molecular biomarker related to the physiological and biological changes which suitable bioindicators, like freshwater snails, undergo in stressful environments. The purpose of this research is to assess the relationship between the heavy metals lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) and MT levels in freshwater snails (Sulcospira testudinaria) in the Brantas River watershed. Heavy metals were assayed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, while MT levels were analyzed using indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Water quality parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia concentration, and phenol concentration were also measured. Samples were obtained from ten sampling sites at Brantas River watershed. The results indicated that Pb concentration ranged from 0.001–0.006 mg/L, Hg from 0.001–0.005 mg/L, and Cd from 0.005–0.03 mg/L, while MT concentration ranged from 0.40–0.80 ng/g. Relationship analysis between heavy metals and MT level in this study revealed the significant effect of Pb concentration on MT values in Sulcospira testudinaria. Therefore, MT in this snail is a potential biomarker for Pb contamination.

During the current research the level of groundwater (piezometers P2,P3,P4) and surface water (reservoir B) contamination during landfill operation and after its closure were examined. 113 samples of groundwater and surface water were collected from spring 2005 until spring 2012, i.e. three years after the landfill closure. The samples were analyzed for pH, EC, PAH, TOC and six heavy metals: Cr, Hg, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cu. The heavy metal concentration in groundwater and surface water both during landfill operations and after the landfill closure remained on a similar level and did not exceed permissible levels determined by WHO. Cr was an exception, because its concentra¬tion, during landfill exploitation, reached the value of 0.028 mg/l in surface water. In all examined after the landfill was closed a decrease in the EC value was observed. With the landfill closure the TOC concentration in groundwater increased from 1.8–3.4 to 2.07–3.6 mg/l and the PAH concentration from 0.01 to 0.02 mikrog/l. It may be attributed to a slowdown of decomposition in landfill. An additional PAH source for ground and surface water are surface run-offs form road pavements, yards and parking lots. The remaining high TOC level in a surface reservoir after the landfill closure is also a result of eurotrophisation, which enriches water with organic substances. Seasonal changes in the concentration of pollutants were observed, resulting both from their dilution by atmospheric precipitation (EC, pH, Cd, Cu) and due to washing them out from neighboring areas and enriching with them the analyzed water (Cu, PAH, Hg).

This paper reviews the literature on noise monitoring, noise mapping and noise modeling studies carried out in different countries by many researchers. The article reveals the current status of the noise-related studies and noise mapping studies. It was discovered that 90% of the noise monitoring studies were focused on the traffic noise, while the remaining 10% focused on the residential, commercial and industrial areas. Sometimes, there may be a necessity to analyze the sound pressure levels all over the place, or around a particular piece of land and machinery of industry. Researchers have used the noise monitoring data for the development of 2D and 3D noise maps which gives a clear picture of the noise level around the source of noise in X, Y, and Z direction. For taking a decision regarding the noise level for any development project, predicting the noise level is always necessary. The traffic noise models are generally used for the purpose of prediction. Early models are based on constant vehicle speed, later some models predicted the noise level for interrupting the traffic flow. For instance, the Stop and Go model can be used for the prediction of the noise level in an interrupted flow. Four such models were reviewed and compared in this article.

Spoil tips are anthropomorphic terrain structures built out of leftover materials from underground or open pit mining. Usually the term spoil tips refers to those build out of unusable particles from coal exploration. As such they consist mostly of slate and various types of sandstone or mudstone. But also include some amount of coal and, what is more important, coal dust. Fires of spoil tips are dangerous to the environment and humans. They can cause degradation of air, and water qualities. Sometimes degradation to the environment can be irreversible. The presented survey was done in two stages. the first included creating a general terrain model. This was done with the use of long range laser scanner. The second step was a more detailed analysis of spatial and temperature conditions. Two measuring seasons ware performed. The first included a survey made with a short range laser scanner and a hand-held inferred camera. The obtained point cloud was supplemented with temperature value with the use of software and hardware provided by the authors. The visualization of 3D discreet thermal model was done in Bentley MicrioStation. The second included a usage of Z+F IMAGER 5010 laser scanner equipped with T-Cam Rev 1.0 thermal camera insole. A new and unique device that connects laser scanner with infrared camera. This season also provide a point cloud with attached temperature value of measured points. This article provides the description of those two methods including a comparison of their effectiveness and costs. It also describes the heat conditions occurring on spoil tip of Lubelski Węgiel „Bogdanka” S.A coal mine surveyed in December 2015.

The paper presents an analysis of noise emitted by selected machine tools in a production hall (under industrial conditions). Noise monitoring is a fundamental task for maintaining workplaces which are safe and healthy. This paper presents the noise measurements obtained for several machine tools, performed in accordance with the PN ISO 230–5:2002 standard. The identification of noise sources and levels was conducted by means of the UNIT 352 measurement system for DMU 50, BGO-CNC/RV/R, FU 251, FW 801, FWC 25/H. Detection of noise sources in the tested machine tools allows to maintain safety of workers and effective means of noise reduction, which are highly significant from the perspective of minimising noise at various workstations. The method of performing noise measurements at workstations using specific machines is normalised, so that the results of such measurements for different machines could be compared. The test results were presented in the form of diagrams and tables. The results of the tests are concluded by a detailed recommendation for the CNC machine tool operators to use hearing protection when at work. The results showed that the level of noise at the operator’s workstation significantly exceeds the standard at certain machining parameters.

Recently, a lot of attention was paid to the improvement of methods which are used to air quality forecasting. Artificial neural networks can be applied to model these problems. Their advantage is that they can solve the problem in the conditions of incomplete information, without the knowledge of the analytical relationship between the input and output data. In this paper we applied artificial neural networks to predict the PM 10 concentrations as factors determining the occurrence of smog phenomena. To create these networks we used meteorological data and concentrations of PM 10. The data were recorded in 2014 and 2015 at three measuring stations operating in Krakow under the State Environmental Monitoring. The best results were obtained by three-layer perceptron with back-propagation algorithm. The neural networks received a good fit in all cases.
