Opis:
As a waste neutralization facility, the landfill is a kind of bioreactor producing landfill gas or (LFG) - biogas, which should be captured and neutralised for environmental reasons. One of the ways of its utilisation is the combined production of heat and electrical energy in combined heat and power (CHP) cogeneration systems. For that purpose, the assessment of the energy efficiency of a cogeneration unit was undertaken in this work on the basis of the unit performance over the last 5 years. The analysis of the CHP system energy performance demonstrated that the ratios range at the lower limits for units up to 0.5 MW. The lower efficiency of fuel chemical conversion in the CHP plant (0.70) stems from the failure to use the rated thermal and electrical power fully (74.2%), which is caused by the insufficient stream of biogas collected from the landfill (161.46 m3∙h-1). The analysis of the generated energy usage, particularly in terms of heat, has shown a surplus which is not used and therefore is a loss. The proposed solutions in this area should optimize the use of heat generated from the renewable source, i.e. landfill biogas.

A pressing concern of issues such as climate change has drawn main attention in the world. The burning of fossil fuels by human due to increasing energy demand in various sectors is one of the main factors that influence the climate change. This has resulted in the introduction of many renewable energy sources as alternatives to fossil fuels. Biogas is one type of renewable energy that has numerous advantages. The present review covers the recent challenges of biogas production and its conversion to electrical energy. This includes the substrates used, the operating parameters, and the pre-treatment used, which can be implemented to maximise the biogas yield. The challenges and potential of the generation of electricity from biogas were also discussed in this review. The results obtained in this review emphasise that biogas is a good renewable energy, as it solves multiple problems and at the same brings benefits to human beings in many ways.

A bottleneck for the development of public transport vehicles is their electricity supply. Electric buses are almost exclusively equipped with electrochemical batteries, while nearly 40% of the energy is used in the processes of air conditioning. For this reason, we developed and built a demonstration system for storing thermal energy in public transport vehicles. The most important effects are: significant reduction of financial expenses and of the total weight of all batteries with the same amount of stored energy.

Opis:
The paper considers plastic products in terms of energy consumption at two stages of their life cycle, i.e. at the stage of production of virgin polymers and at the stage of processing polymers into a finished product. Energy intake places were indicated and energy needs related to the production of polymer products were assessed. This allowed to indicate which polymer production and processing processes into finished products are particularly energy-intensive. The research shows that the greater the amount of energy accumulated in the plastic during its production, the greater the importance of this plastic in the post-consumer phase as a recyclable material. Recycling of waste plastics allows the use of this energy and reduces the consumption of virgin raw materials. Primary polymers were compared in terms of the energy efficiency index of their production process. This indicator is the quotient of the calorific value of the polymer and the energy consumption in its production. It shows how much of the energy input during the production of primary plastic can be recovered from the thermal processing of the waste plastic. The highest indicator value was obtained for polyethylene and polypropylene. It was found shown that the total energy consumption (converted to primary energy) of the PET virgin polymer production process and its processing into packaging reaches the value of 109.2–115.2 MJ/kg. This is almost five times the calorific value of this polymer.

Production of a methane-rich gas (‘biogas’) is contemporary popular sludges processing technology which allows to generate thermal and/or electric energy. Formal requirements issued by the European Union to promote so called renewable energy resources made these process more attractive leading to its application in WWTPs which were designed based on different sludge handling processes. Authors (as active design engineers) noted that dimensioning sludge digestion chamber is usually based on SRT assessment without any emphasis on sludge characteristics. Bio-mass characteristics and the estimation of its activity with respect to methane production are of great importance, from both scientific and practical points of view, as anaerobic digestion appears to be one of crucial processes in municipal wastewater handling and disposal. The authors propose respirometric tests to estimate a biomass potential to produce ‘a biogas’ and several years’ laboratory and full scale experience proved its usefulness and reliability both as a measurement and a design tool applicable in sludge handling. Dimensioning method proposed by authors, allows to construct and optimize operation of digestion chambers based on a methanogenic activity.

Opis:
Disintegration of sewage sludge leads to the breakdown of the structure of the sewage floc and release of intracellular fluids. This allows for easy removal of organic compounds that are contained in the cells during further processes of treatment of waste and processing of sludge. One of the methods of disintegration is the use of ultrasound field energy. Depending on the applied process parameters (exposure time, intensity), coagulation or dispersion of the sludge flocs may occur. The aim of the research was to determine the amount of sonication energy supplied to the sludge and the related costs of the disintegration process. The study used digested sewage sludge, which was exposed to ultrasound field energy of different intensity (from 1.6 W/cm2 to 3.8 W/cm2) and exposure time (from 2 to 120s). The sewage sludge sonication process was conducted using Sonics VCX-1500 ultrasonic processor with a maximum output power of 1500W. The vibration frequency of the ultrasound field of the generator was 20 kHz, whereas the maximum wavelength for the 100% amplitude, was 39.42 µm. Energy demand was recorded during each measurement and the amount of sonication energy supplied to the system was calculated relative to dry matter. The experiments showed an increase in the demand for energy along with the extension of the exposure time and the increase in the intensity of the ultrasound field. For two of sludge samples with comparable dry matter content, the sonication energy values were similar.

Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power plants are an inexhaustible and clean source of electricity and heat. The development of civilization, resulting in a constant increase in the demand for electricity and the prospect of fossil fuels depletion, including coal and oil, forces us to seek new sources of energy and invest in the renewable energy sources. The development of technology and the policy of the European Union have a positive impact on the development of renewable energy sources and the increase in the installed capacity. One of the ways of obtaining electricity from renewable sources is through the photovoltaic cells. Computer software is becoming helpful in designing the photovoltaic installations. Simulations enable conducting the economic analysis and selection of the best possible installation parameters. This enables the best use of the available conditions to obtain the largest production of electricity. The article presents a project of a photovoltaic installation for a single-family building using the BlueSol Design software.

The aim of this paper is to specify people’s awareness, acceptance and needs for the Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy efficiency (EE) innovations in Jordan. This took place after having studied the most influential innovations on RE and EE in Germany, Spain and Turkey. Then, two suitable innovations were selected; in particular, PV mobile charger and sodium light unit regulator. Our research was based on the analysis of qualitative interviews and a questionnaire. The results showed that (53%) are willing to buy PV mobile charger depending on its life cycle and efficiency even if it is expensive. About (89%) of respondents realized that it is important to develop and support the EE innovative solution of using sodium regulator in lighting the streets by the municipalities, and about (49%) would like to take practical steps for the RE and EE developments if they could. The results also show that all respondents are willing to pay extra cost to obtain green energy; (20%) want the cheapest possible solution in this regard. The study results indicate that Jordanian people do expect more from the public sector about renewable energy production; whereas a large percentage (63%) thinks that public sector should take the first step towards renewable energy production. The acceptance and awareness of the society on RE and EE innovations is one of the most important drivers towards the transition to RE and EE in Jordan.

This study evaluated the biogas production potential of water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) by batch anaerobic digestion under in-vitro conditions. Twenty-one litre-plastic jars were used to conduct 4 replications over 75 days. The results showed that solution temperature, pH and Eh were suitable for biogas production. More than 50% of the obtained CH4 was formed within 17–42 days after incubation. The maximum daily CH4 production was 0.052 L/gVS, whilst the daily H2S concentration was low, with a maximum value of 28 ppm within 14–21 d after incubation. Moreover, the peak of daily biogas production was seen at day 16 with production of 0.12 L/gVS. The results highlight that water lettuce biomass can be potentially used to produce high quality biogas in anaerobic incubation.

The utilisation of fine coal waste is still limited, even though its availability is very abundant in the mining industry. This study utilises fine coal by converting it into syngas through catalytic gasification. The gasification process was carried out at a temperature range of 350–550°C for 10–50 minutes using natural zeolite as a catalyst. The syngas composition and quality parameters were evaluated through the H2/CO ratio, heating value, and gasification efficiency. From the research results, fine coal contained high amounts of carbon and fixed carbon. Temperature is the variable that most influences the gasification process. The addition of zeolite actively increased the CO content in the syngas. The H2/CO ratio of syngas >1, the highest HHV and LHV 16.15 and 14.46 MJ/Nm3 with the highest carbon conversion efficiency value of 88.85%, made fine coal very suitable to be used as raw material for the gasification process to produce environmentally friendly syngas.

This paper presents an unconventional view on power electronic converters control as an important factor in environmental protection. Two distinct features that are provided by the control system, namely harmonics elimination and Fault Ride-Through are addressed herein. The paper provides the discussion on how well designed and robust power converter control can influence the environment in a positive way. One of the shortcomings of power converters is emission of current harmonics which results in supply voltage distortion. The appropriate control minimizes the harmonics content which leads to energy losses reduction, especially in power transformers cores. Fault ride-through is an ability of power converter to remain connected and operating in a grid where the fault occurred. It is of paramount importance for integration of large power renewable energy sources. Shutting down e.g. large wind farm would result in engaging the conventional power plants to fill in the energy production gap.

Issues connected with expired food products are a significant, however underestimated, problem. Currently, expired food, disposed of by manufacturing industry plans, trade and gastronomy, comprises the biggest content of waste. In retail chains such products are withdrawn from sale and become waste, which should be managed properly. Expired food cannot be reintroduced to the market or sold at reduced price or on special offers. Possibilities to use fermentation may enable both utilization of expired food and biogas acquisition – a source of renewable energy. Therefore, fermentation plays three important roles. Firstly, it is a method of converting the energy from expired food into useful fuel, i.e. biogas which can be stored and transported. Secondly, this is a method aiming at recycling organic waste into stable soil improvers, liquid fertilizers and energy. And thirdly, it is a method of waste inertisation with the objective to decrease adverse influence on the environment. This article indicates possibilities to obtain biogas from three selected mixtures of expired food products.
