Opis:
In this study, the ability of hexane (HSE), chloroform (CSE), ethyl acetate (EASE) and methanolic (MSE) stems extracts from Phragmites australis or EDTA (as standard) to chelate iron using ferrozine method or zinc and copper using the murexide method is carried out in vitro. When the increased volumes of the HSE studied were taken from a stock solution of a fixed concentration 1 mg/ml at 25–175 μl for the iron and zinc chelating assay, 1–7 mg/ml for the copper chelating assay gave a significant (p≤ 0.01) activity. The obtained results showed that the HSE have the highest capacity to chelate ferrous ions below the EDTA (standard chelator) with absorbance arrive to the lesser extent 0.24±0.005, 0.04±0.013 which expresses 86% and 97% (compared to the control) of inhibition, respectively. For the murexide chelation, the results obtained also showed that the HSE and EDTA have a good (p≤ 0.01) chelating dose dependent effect towards zinc and copper ions with increased absorbance 0.45±0.02 and 0.42±0.02 with 54% and 56% of inhibition, respectively, for the zinc chelation and 0.66±0.03, 0.13±0.005 represent 44% and 88% for copper chelation. In contrast to the antioxidant capacity, the extract of hexane, ethyl acetate, chloroform and methanol from leaves, stems and roots of the Phragmites australis plant have a very low scavenger effect to the radical DPPH where the maximum inhibition is approximately 13.79%, obtained with the maximum volume. Finally, the HPLC analysis of effective extract (HSE) confirmed the presence of oxalic, citric, malic, succinic, fumaric, formic, acetic, propionic and butyric or iso butyric acid.

Opis:
The Albanian part of Lake Ohrid is endangered by heavy metals, the source of which is mainly the old mining waste around the lake shore, but also agricultural pollution. The chromium and nickel concentrations were investigated in the fall season in the sediment and common reed (Phragmites australis). The peroxidation of lipids in stalks was also investigated. The study was conducted on three points of the lake: at the entrance to the city of Pogradec, the former Fe-Ni mine and the village of Lin (control point). Heavy metals were determined with the method of atomic absorption spectrometry and malondialdehyde, using the spectrophotometric method. The results showed that there was greater accumulation of nickel than chromium in both sediments and stalks in the three explored points. The sediment and plant samples taken in the part of the former Fe-Ni mines showed a higher level of investigated metals, compared to the other two research points. At this point, the difference was significant for chromium (p <0.01) compared to the village of Lin, whereas for nickel there was a significant difference (p <0.01) for the two research points compared to the reference point (Lin). Concerning the Cr and Ni levels in stalk, a significant difference (p <0.01) was observed for both metals only in the samples taken from the former Fe-Ni mines, compared to the village of Lin. Meanwhile, the increased MDA level caused by oxidative stress was higher in the plants collected at the entrance of Pogradec, not only with the checkpoint (p <0.01) but also with the plants collected in the former Ni-Fe mine.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of research on the effects of removing pollution from domestic wastewater in two beds of constructed wetland systems with vertical flow. Bed I was planted with common reed (Phragmites australis Cav. Trin. Ex Steud.), whereas bed II with Glyceria maxima (Glyceria aquatica L.). The surface of each of the beds amounted to 30 m2, and the hydraulic load of each of them amounted to 0.033 m3·m-2·d-1. The study showed very good results in the removal of most of the analyzed indicators of contamination, which were similar in both analyzed beds. They were, respectively: 91 and 93% – for total suspended solids, 96 and 98% – for BOD5, 96 and 94% – for CODCr, 88 and 86% – for ammonia nitrogen and 87 and 88% – for total phosphorus. Much smaller effects were reported with regard to total nitrogen removal – 55% in bed I with common reed and 54% in bed II with Glyceria maxima. The tested beds also eliminated the number of coliform bacteria and faecal coliform bacteria quite effectively. Average effects of the removal of coliform bacteria in bed I and II were 99.74%, in the case of faecal coliform 98.06% and 97.94% respectively. Values of basic indicators of contamination (total suspended solids, BOD5 and CODCr) in the wastewater discharged from the analyzed beds met the requirements of the Regulation of the Minister of the Environment of 2014. The test results obtained in the first year of operation of the analyzed beds show that neither of the applied plants significantly improves the results of contaminant removal.
