Opis:
It is important to indicate air quality level in metropolitan areas as it is harmful to public health. Air quality index (AQI) is a useful tool to convert air quality pollutants concentrations into a single number representing air quality level. There are many air quality index models in the literature to represent air quality level. Two models were selected to assess the air quality in Mosul city. The first model utilizes the highest sub-index depending on USEPA pollutants standards. The second model includes the weights of all pollutants in the model as an aggregated air quality index (AAQI) model. Air quality concentrations were collected using a fixed monitoring station located in the courtyard of the public library for a year. The results illustrate that the values of aggregated Air quality index model were higher than those of the USEPA model. Air quality category "Moderate" was dominant in winter and spring for the two models. In contrast, the category "Unhealthy for sensitive group" was dominant in summer and autumn. Furthermore, the category "Unhealthy" appeared only with aggregated model in autumn. The contribution of air pollutants in AQI can be ranked as PM10, SO2, NO2, CO and O3 from higher to lower. The study concluded that the AAQI is comprehensive and more workable in environmental management.

Opis:
A growing urban development pattern can have both positive and negative impacts. One of them is the thermal discomfort in the form of heat stress. Heat stress is the maximum condition of the human body to receive the heat exposure to various activities. This study analyzed the thermal comfort in Yogyakarta City based on the Discomfort Index (DI) method. The DI method is commonly used in tropical climates using the parameters that include average air temperature and humidity. The data consists of secondary data obtained from Geophysics Station Gamping in 2004-2020 and Climatology Station Mlati in 2017-2020. The result of DI indicated that the highest value occurred in the wet moon climate type in April, with 25.63 °C. Therefore, the conditions showed that more than 50% of people in the city of Yogyakarta fall into an uncomfortable category with an average index of 24.97 °C, which can lead to heat stress. Environmental engineering can be employed to decrease the heat stress potential and improve the thermal comfort for Yogyakarta’s urban community, which is public and private open space, plant road shade vegetation, implement a green façade (vertical garden), as well as improve people’s living behavior and use appropriate clothing.

Opis:
Surface water resource, such as river, is constantly contaminated by domestic and industrial pollutants. In order to properly manage the water resource, a composite index for water quality assessment, such as water quality index (WQI), has been designed to monitor and evaluate the properties of surface water. However, this index is quite subjective in terms of determination of relative weights. A principal component analysis (PCA) can be used to reduce the dimension and subjectivity of water quality variables. The purpose of this study was to implement the use of hybrid PCA and WQI methods to assess and monitor the water quality of the Bengawan Solo River, which is located in Java Island, Indonesia. The result suggested that COD, BOD, TSS, TDS, nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia were the main factors that determine water quality of the Bengawan Solo River. Furthermore, it was revealed that most samples from the river showed water quality status as slightly polluted. In addition to this, the seasonal variation of the PCWI values indicated a significant increase of water pollution in the Bengawan Solo River per year.

Opis:
The heavy metal contamination has become a serious problem in the aquatic environment, including marine sediments. This study was aimed at analyzing the content of heavy metals in marine sediments, then assessing and evaluating the level of heavy metal contamination and its ecological risks. The sediment samples were taken using a grab sampler at six sites in the coastal waters of Mimika Regency, Indonesia. The TCLP testing method was used to determine the content of heavy metals in marine sediments. The results showed that the concentrations of Pb, Cu, Cd, and Hg in marine sediments ranged from <0.25 to 0.59 ppm, <0.02 to 0.54 ppm, <0.005 to 0.03 ppm, and < 0.0007 ppm. Only the concentrations of Cu on the Meoga and Puriri sites exceeded the quality standard in the Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 18 year 1999. The results of the assessment of heavy metal contamination and its ecological risk potential indicate that the coastal waters of Mimika Regency are included in the category of low contamination and low ecological risks. The concentration of heavy metals in this study shows that the coastal waters of Mimika Regency are not contaminated by Pb, Cu, Cd, and Hg heavy metals.

Opis:
Currently, extra treatment of secondary effluent to remove nitrogen and phosphorous may be required for its unrestricted reuse. This can be achieved by installing the wastewater polishing systems (or tertiary treatment). The wastewater polishing solutions are environmentally friendly, cheap and effective. The experiments were conducted on a pilot scale using a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) with a capacity of 500 L to polish the municipal effluent from organic pollutant, undesirable nutrients and bacteria without the use of disinfectants. The major purpose was to define and apply a model for evaluating polishing of secondary effluent and implement the optimal technology for unrestricted use. Wastewater Polishing Index (WWPI) is a new tool that has been employed for rapidly evaluating of water quality improvement. It can be implemented into any surface water effluent treatment system or for reuse. WWPI can be an important tool designed for decision makers. The total average weight of six parameters (COD, BOD5, SS, Ammonia nitrogen, Total Phosphorus and Escherichia coli) are defined as the index, each one converted to sub-index which is scaled from zero to one hundred. If none of six parameters exist in the effluent WWPI, it is equal to zero, while if the parameters match the Malaysian’s effluent Standard B, It amounts to one hundred. In turn, WWPI is ninety when all six of them are equal to their corresponding Malaysian National Water Quality Standard (IV) for re-use. The index of wastewater polishing was validated and approved for the pilot MBBR study.
