Particulate materials and waste from industrial processes are troublesome in storage, transport and utilization, mainly due to their large volume and dusting. Therefore, originally the main reason for developing the agglomeration processes was to eliminate the afore-mentioned disadvantages. However, the modifications introduced to the merging processes of materials enabled obtaining a new type of products widely used in various applications. For the agglomeration of the inorganic materials, often containing hazardous substances, the disposal and transformation technologies are available for the safe products that can be used, for example, in civil engineering and construction. In turn, the agglomeration of the materials containing organic substances or fine coal, producing alternative fuels for energy recovery. Obviously, the combustion of these fuels results in a subsequent generation of waste in the form of bottom and fly ash, but they can be successfully further agglomerated to produce more valuable products. The numerous examples of the use of various agglomeration techniques to complete utilization of fine grains was shown. An additional effect of the agglomeration processes was also the fulfilment of the economy criteria, which matches with the principles of sustainable development of the environment. Supporting by worldwide literature, the selected agglomeration techniques were discussed, such as: solidification, granulation, extrusion, briquetting, as well as post-agglomeration high-temperature processing.

Opis:
In the study the physicochemical properties of selected municipal sewage sludge were compared using the reports on waste generation from the years 2007–2012 in the Mazovia voivodship. The selection was done on the basis of different methods of sludge processing and the number of equivalent inhabitants (NEJ) supported by sewage. Physical and chemical properties of municipal sewage sludge were significantly dependent on the method of purification and treatment methods. These sludges were characterized by a high content of organic matter and macronutrients. The amount of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Hg and Zn) were within acceptable standards for municipal sewage sludge used in agriculture. Municipal sewage sludge treated by biological method with higher nutrients removal did not create bacteriological danger and were used in agriculture, generally to the cultivation of all agricultural products. Sewage sludge sanitized with lime and subjected to anaerobic digestion did not meet bacteriological standards, which eliminated their use in agriculture.

The research is related to solving the problem of rational use of materials and to the creation of resource-saving technologies for the protection of the environment from pollution. Sorption technologies are quite effective in wastewater treatment, but most sorbents are quite expensive, and their regeneration raises the question of recycling of spent solutions. The cheapness and availability of raw material base of biosorbents makes these technologies attractive for wastewater treatment. The research is aimed at investigation of the ways to effectively utilize the spent sorbents, which are obtained after water purification, in the production of building materials. The obtained results allow creating a complex low-waste technology of water demineralization and purification from heavy metal ions.

Opis:
The problem of utilizing plant wastes of the agro-industrial complex is equally important and urgent. In this regard, it is advisable to develop a complex technology of plant waste application to solve the ecological problems of environmental pollution with heavy metals. Modification of walnuts shells with orthophosphoric acid has proven to be a promising process for obtaining the biosorbents with the efficient sorption properties. It was found out that the increase in the concentration of inorganic acid in modification time promotes the improvement in sorption capacity. Such biosorbents can be used in low-waste water demineralization systems. The utilization of waste biosorbents through the use in the composition of building materials is effective from an economic point of view. It was shown that the biosorbent acts as a fine additive; the increase in normal density and acceleration in hardening time takes place. At the same time, the compressive strength of the cement with the application of biosorbents decreases slightly. The results show that the modified walnuts shells have a slightly adverse effect on the hardening time of cement.

The article analyzes the information on modern developments in the utilization of phosphogypsum. Only a few directions give the prospect of large-scale use of both freshly formed phosphogypsum and phosphogypsum accumulated in dumps. Under the conditions of the Russian Federation, it is promising to use phosphogypsum for the production of building materials, as well as for agriculture, for reclamation of soil and the creation of mounds of a certain type. The possibility of using phosphogypsum as a raw material for obtaining rare-earth elements is shown.

The purpose of the research was to raise the level of environmental safety in the coal mining regions by using combustion metamorphic rocks of the spoil banks, which were reinforced with the modified wastes of the polymer production, namely carbonous binders, as a man-made raw material for the base courses of roads. The environmentally friendly technology for the construction of the base course of roads from layers of combustion metamorphic rock mixtures (CMRM) with different largest granule size of crushed stone was developed. The bulk density and compressive strength in a cylinder on a hydraulic press were used as the criteria for determining the rational granulometric composition. The practicability of reinforcing combustion metamorphic rocks with coal tar, which is a modified waste of the polystyrene production, i.e polystyrene dust, was shown. The technology of preparation of the tar and polystyrene binder (TPB) was developed. The optimal concentration of polystyrene dust in the organic binder of the coke production and the time of their combination (as the optimal areas of admissible values of variation factors X1, X2, X3) were determined using the method of mathematical planning of the three-factor experiment (5 optimization parameters). The coefficients of the regression equations were calculated using the least squares method. Regression equations are a second-degree polynomial. The three-dimensional diagrams “parameters of system optimization – variance factors” were calculated and drawn. In accordance with the obtained regression equations, the response surface was designed in a three-dimensional space. The areas of admissible values of optimal variance factors correspond to the limit values of the response functions.

Sediments constitute one of the wastes that are generated in sewage treatment plants. The methods of their final management depend on the sewage sludge system management. One of the employed methods is Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion (ATAD). The article presents the process of autothermal oxygen digestion of sewage sludge as a method enabling to obtain biomass, which can be used in the natural environment. In addition to the description of the theoretical basis of the discussed process, the quality of the formed sewage sludge is presented. The amount of sludge and the manner of its final utilisation were also analyzed. The results were presented on the basis of waste records kept in each of the analyzed sewage treatment plants. Sludge transfer cards in 2013-2018 were also analyzed in the sewage treatment plants where sludge undergoes the ATAD process.

The purpose of the research was to synthesize new effective and cheap coagulants from industrial wastes (red mud) and study their coagulation properties on model water of textile industries, as well as develop a closed scheme of local wastewater treatment using the synthesized coagulants. Liquid coagulants, synthesized with the simple method, have better performance than commercial FeCl3, since not only iron but also aluminum and titanium compounds are present in the synthesized liquid coagulants, which makes them more effective. For the synthesized coagulants with a dose of 10 mg/l, the removal efficiency of the dyes mixture from the water was 99.7%, while for the commercial FeCl3, with a 2.5 times higher dose – only 95.4%. In the case of creating closed scheme of treatment and usage of the treated water with the coagulation method, an additional sorption purification step from the trace concentrations of pollutants was proposed. The usage of the new coagulants, synthesized from the wastes of alumina production in the proposed scheme will not only help reduce the environmental burden by minimizing the wastewater discharges into sewerage, but also recycle the accumulated environmentally hazardous “red mud” waste into commercial products.

The sludge management of many wastewater treatment plants in Poland has not been properly solved yet. The exploiters and designers often have to cope with the dilemma of choosing the method of processing and neutralizing sewage sludge. The method discussed in the article is only one of the options that fully fits in the trends of implementing good practices in the management of sewage sludge. It is a technologically and economically effective as well as environmentally friendly process. It contributes significantly to minimizing the amount of sewage sludge and allows the production of organic fertilizer instead of waste. The work discusses the quality of sewage sludge after autothermal thermophilic stabilization (ATAD). The results of investigations pertaining to the reaction of sludge, dry mass, dry organic matter, content of biogenic substances, calcium and magnesium compounds and heavy metals were analyzed.

Red mud (RM), the by-product generated during the alumina extraction process, is considered a valuable secondary raw material, since iron (20–54%) represents its major constituent. Accordingly, the suitability of recycling this RM in the sintering process of Egyptian iron ore was studied. The effect of adding different amounts of RM to the sinter charge mixture (0–10 wt.%) on the sintering process performance as well as the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of the produced sinter was investigated. The results revealed that increasing the amount of red mud in the sinter charge mixture leads to a high improvement in the strength of the produced sinter till reaching a maximum at 7% addition, which deteriorates thereafter. Meanwhile, owing to the fine nature of the red mud, increasing its contents in the sinter charge mixture leads to reduced speed of the sintering process, which consequently affects the productivity at the blast furnace yard. The sinter produced with the addition of 3% red mud shows the highest reducibility. These results indicate the suitability of recycling RM in the Egyptian iron ore sintering process with an amount not higher than 3 wt.% of the total sinter mixture charge.

Assessment of the dynamics of changes in the physical and chemical properties and morphological composition of the filling mixture as well as the identification of the elements capable of migrating into the environment is an important part of assessing the environmental efficiency of such an environmental measure during the filling of mined-out space of an ore deposit. During scientific research, the environmental safety mined-out space filling technology at the gold ore deposit by the mixture of rock waste, cement and crushed car tires was investigated. The authors carried out a set of laboratory studies and created a physical model of groundwater infiltration. Under laboratory conditions, this model allowed the experiment to evaluate the migration of elements and substances from the filling mixture into the environment to assess the risks of secondary pollution. The potential hazard of element migration from the backfill mixture into the environment was determined as a result of testing the backfill mixture on a bench with washing using the model solution that emits drainage water. During research, it was revealed that under the conditions of an ore deposit, the filling mixture components transformation would not lead to hazardous hydrochemical and hydrogeochemical areas or pollution stream formation.

Sewage-treatment plants generate sludge which needs to be neutralized for legal, esthetical, and practical reasons. Economical and ecological concerns indicate that sludge, as long as it is possible, should be returned to the natural environment. The article presents the process of autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) as a measure to produce biomass, which can be naturally utilized. The description of theoretical principles of the process in question is accompanied by presentation of an ATAD installation which has been functioning since 2009 at the municipal sewagetreatment plant in Olecko. Results of microbiological and chemical tests carried out in the years 2010–2012 have been analyzed. Examinations embraced sludge which was the final product of the aforementioned sewage-treatment plant.
