Opis:
The aim of the research was to study the impact of "Oława" smelter on surroundings. For this purpose, water, soil and sediments were collected in the vicinity of smelter and subjected to selected ecotoxicological tests. The authors used Spirodela polyrhiza duckweed and Brachinious calyciflorus rotifer for the assessment of the water from Odra River, and Heterocypris inconqruens ostracod for the sediment studies. Triticum sativum and Avena sativa monocotyledons as well as Sinapis alba and Lepidium sativum dicotyledonous plants were used to perform the soil toxicity tests. The obtained results proved slight sediment toxicity, but no toxicity of water was observed. The inhibition of root growth of tested plants was observed suggesting the impact of toxicity on soil. The studies proved that only the area in the nearest vicinity of the "Oława" smelter is still contaminated with heavy metals and may pose a serious threat to the environment.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the ecotoxicity of the waste water from chosen sewage treatment plants. Microtox M500 and Aliivibrio fischeri luminescent bacteria were used for the assessment of toxicity as well as acute tests using aquatic organisms: Daphnia magna crustacea and Chironomus tentans larvae. The performed ecotoxicological tests showed different ranges of sensitivity of living organisms when it comes to the individual types of industrial sewage. The Aliivibrio fischeri bacteria turned out to be the most sensitive bioindicator. In addition, the inclusion of toxicity tests in a wastewater management system in industrial plants will allow the elimination of toxic sewage disposal into the surface water and soil.

Marine biodiversity of Papua is very high, but unfortunately research and utilization in medicine are limited. Many species of flora and fauna are used in ethopharmacology as drugs but without scientific explanation, e.g. octopus (Octopus cyanea), found in the Northern Papua Sea. The aim of this research was to test the toxicity of the ethanol octopus ink. The toxicity was tested with the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The samples were collected from the sea of Biak island in West Papua, extracted with ethanol, ethyl acetate, and dichloromethane then tested the toxicity for Artemia salina leach larvae. The toxicity test involved concentrations of 1000, 750, 500, 250, 100, 75, 50, and 25 ppm. The result showed that ethanol extract of octopus ink has LC50 of 290 ppm, ethyl acetate extract has LC50 of 947 ppm, whereas dicholoromethane extract – 2190 ppm.

Opis:
Drilling sludge formed in the process of drilling wells using a drilling agent on a hydrocarbon basis looks like soft pasty mass of black color, with a distinct smell of petroleum products. Oil-based drill sludge has a high oil and chloride ions content, identified excessive concentrations of chromium 2.67 times. According to the degree of accumulation of heavy metals, that were distributed in the following order: manganese (Mn) > zinc (Zn) > copper (Cu) > chromium (Cr) > lead (Pb) > cobalt (Co) > arsenic (As) > mercury (Hg) > cadmium (Cd). The results of the particle size distribution indicate a significant proportion of physical clay, which peaks for the silt fraction – 63.60 %. During the study of the waste drilling agent was found that it includes oil products which reached level of 9000 mg/kg, while the hydrogen index refers to a neutral medium – 6.5 pH. The evaluation of the toxic effect of drilling waste according to the test-results has an acute toxic effect on the environment (hazard class IV). The significance of the research indicates the relevance of environmental assessment of drilling waste for the optimal choice of their subsequent disposal.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of the preliminary experiments conducted on fly ash and bottom ash samples that were collected from a fluidised-bed boiler after biomass combustion. The purpose of the research was to determine potential possibilities of the introduction of such types of waste to soil, in accordance with the ecological engineering assumptions. The following physical and chemical properties of the analysed waste were determined: particle size distribution, pH, chemical composition, and leaching. The chemical properties of the tested power-generation waste were essentially different, depending on the time of waste sample collection from the installation, despite the fact that other identical sampling conditions were observed: the same installation, the same combustion process, and the same type of fuel. To determine the eco-toxicity of the tested waste samples, the vegetation experiments were conducted that allowed to evaluate the influence of the tested waste samples on selected test plant species. The tests concerned for example the influence of fly ash and bottom ash on such physiological processes as seed germination and plant growth (the growth of both roots and shoots). The experiments indicated certain options of the introduction of the tested waste into soil. However, due to a considerable changeability of the waste composition and structure that presented a risk of the introduction of undesired pollutants into soil, including heavy metals, such use would be possible upon previous regular evaluation of the waste’s physical, chemical, and eco-toxic properties.

Opis:
The date seeds (DS) biochar produced at 550°C was found to be appropriate for remediation of metal-contaminated water. This was evident in the data, which showed that applying the biochar to Raphanus sp. and Arabidopsis sp. reduced metal stress and toxicity. The LC50 of all tested metals solutions on seed germination was increased significantly (P<0.05) in Raphanus sp. by 10.4, 2.3, 5, 1.8, and 3 folds, respectively, for Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and metals combination, and by 5, 3.4, 6, 5.5, and 2.5 folds in Arabidopsis sp. For seedling growth, the DS biochar enhanced the LC50 significantly (P<0.05) of the same metals in Raphanus sp. by 9.6, 9.2, 13.8, 12.1, and 1.6 folds, and in Arabidopsis sp. by 7, 3, 2.3, 2.9, and 2.7 folds, respectively. The LC of all metals was increased by 1.5 to 8 times and 1.5 to 12 times, respectively, for the seed germination and seedling growth of Raphanus sp. and Arabidopsis sp. Both plants were able to grow shoots at higher metal concentrations when the DS biochar was employed, as compared to the case when no DS biochar was utilized. In terms of shoot length, similar results were achieved, with the DS biochar application significantly enhancing shoot length (P<0.05), as compared to the case when no biochar was applied. Despite the fact that Arabidopsis sp. was more sensitive to metals than Raphanus sp., both plants raised their RGR and TI and reduced their phytotoxicity values in all metals following the DS biochar application, and sprouted at higher metal concentrations than before. These findings introduce a successful eco-friendly adsorbent for metal removal from aquatic environments, paving the way for more investigations.

Opis:
The household and industrial wastes that have been accumulated during the last 40–50 years organized and spontaneous landfills (garbage dumps) pollution of the natural water bodies near locations. As results of precipitation and solar irradiation, the drainage of water formation occurs; such waters are polluted with harmful and toxic ingredients. The known indices of pollution of industrial and surface waters as well as the technique for determining the class of danger posed by solid household wastes were analyzed. The application of this technique to liquid wastes is suggested, since the change of aggregate state must not restrict its application; on the contrary, a new useful unexpected result can emerge with this. A rather simple dimensionless index of toxicity was chosen on the basis of the following examples: composition of the drainage waters of a specific landfill, content of harmful ingredients in them, excess ratio of their maximum permissible concentration. Such an index takes into account the maximum permissible concentration of the harmful substance in the ground, as well as the fraction of the harmful ingredients in the total mass of the liquid waste. Using the dimensionless index of toxicity, the bar charts were drawn, from which the sequence of removal of harmful components from the liquid mixture can be determined, starting with the component with the least value of dimensionless index of toxicity which characterizes the most dangerous component.

Opis:
The constant discharge of large quantities of toxic substances due to human activities has led to a global environmental issue. Numerous industrial sectors’ effluents, which include coal-based power plants, mineral extraction activities, electroplating processes, as well as battery manufacturing, release metallic ions towards different ecosystems, such as Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), and Chromium (Cr). Heavy metals pose a significant danger to living organisms, humans, and environments because of their properties, mainly severe toxicity, and strong accumulation ability. Metallic ions are not subject to breakdown towards final components when contrasted with organic contaminants, which are significantly impacted by biochemical and chemical decomposition. Consequently, eliminating these elements has been regarded as a significant task within the water treatment sector. The purpose of this article is to analyze the literature related to heavy metals in terms of different issues. The heavy metals expression is explained. The natural sources and human activities responsible for releasing metallic ions into the environment are comprehensively discussed. In addition, heavy metals toxicity and potential risks to humans and different ecosystems are included. Various approaches for removing heavy metals from industrial wastewater, along with their associated advantages and drawbacks, are further evaluated.

Research work on the new assessment of environmental indicators using equipment from the PEMS group (Portable Emission Measurement Systems) with motor vehicles is being developed. Due to the miniaturization of equipment, there are new measurement possibilities for more and more numerous groups of vehicles, including two-wheelers. The article presents the research and a summary of the results of a moped equipped with a two-stroke engine, approved in accordance with the Euro 3 standard. The research object is mainly used for driving in urban traffic. Therefore, the research route was created as the first communication frame in the Poznań agglomeration. In the analysis of the results, the author’s M toxicity index was proposed, which is based on the assumption that CO2 emission is a measure of the correctness of the combustion process. The equipment from the PEMS-AxionR/S+ group, characterized by small dimensions and low weight, was used to determine the actual motion parameters and the emission of toxic compounds. In the analysis of the measurement results, dimensionless indicators of toxicity M of gaseous compounds were determined and a comparative analysis was made with the values of other objects obtained in the course of previous research (motorcycle, passenger car, off-road vehicle, hybrid bus and agricultural tractor). Due to the engine design (two-stroke type), the worst environmental indicators were obtained for CO and HC compared to other tested vehicles.
